Arsenal yesterday announced their first foray into the summer transfer market, with the news that Ivory Coast star Gervinho will join the club later this week from French champions Lille “subject to a regulatory process”.

The move comes as little surprise; the Gunners are long-term admirers of the 24 year-old and speculation has been rife for a number of months that the player‘s move to London was imminent.

While the move is, undoubtedly, a positive one, it has been somewhat overshadowed by the ongoing transfer sagas involving both Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. Arsenal are currently on a pre-season tour of Malaysia right now and when asked of the pair’s respective futures yesterday, Arsene Wenger remained positive that the two will stay for next season, though the rumours are likely to run and run.

In keeping with the low-key nature of Gervinho’s arrival, Wenger only had this to say:

“Gervinho has just joined up for training today at London Colney. He signed last Thursday, and has just come back from his holidays.”

The Statistics

Gervinho began his career as an 18 year old at Belgian side KSK Beveren where, over the course of a couple of seasons, he scored 14 goals and made 5 assists in 61 league appearances. A move to Ligue 1 followed, and two seasons at Le Mans brought the Ivorian 8 goals and 12 assists from 67 games before Lille came calling.

Once again, Gervinho lasted the two years, with last season, in particular, showing a marked increase in his ability to effect a game. On his way to helping the club win their first domestic double for 57 years, Gervinho was the only player to hit double figures for both goals and assists for Rudi Garcia’s all-conquering side, with 15 and 10 respectively.

He broke into the Ivory Coast side in 2008 and has subsequently played for his country 25 times, scoring 6 times and making 2 assists.

The Prospects

Lille’s favoured formation was 4-3-3 last term and, with an emphasis on attack either home or away, Gervinho was given license to wreak havoc. Predominantly right-footed, he played right of a front three for the majority of the campaign and may offer Theo Walcott competition for a starting berth in Wenger’s first XI, though 11 starts wide left last season suggest he will offer Arsenal more versatility.

Gervinho’s prospects for 2011/12 will clearly be influenced by the futures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. In the unlikely event of both players staying at the Emirates this season, his number of starts will perhaps, initially, be limited, but if the Arsenal skipper goes, Nasri could take over in the central role and leave a space wide left for Gervinho to make his own.

Despite missing just one league game last season, Andrei Arshavin scored just six goals and a series of lacklustre performances suggest the Russian is anything but a guaranteed starter. If both Nasri and Fabregas depart, however, Gervinho seems set for a starting role. The fact that the Arsenal boss was in the market for Velez Sarsfield playmaker Ricardo Alvarez indicates he is looking to fill any gap created by Fabregas’ possible departure to Barcelona and, despite missing out to Inter for the player‘s signature, Wenger is clearly intent on replenishing his squad.

In terms of pricing, Nasri came in at 7.5 and Walcott 7.0 last season and it’s likely FPL will rank Gervinho along the same lines when the prices for next season are revealed later this month. It’s clear Arsenal have bagged themselves a player that will offer creativity and goal threat in equal measure, though just how quickly he will adapt to the more physical Premier League, only time will tell.

but maybe we are now all dreaming that we had a dream about this and FPL is actually open and we are stuck in the dormant dream state because of our obsession and will not wake until it 'opens'.

True, I know that it has to be under 20 characters, but that's okay because I have no intention of using any name other than Mitchacho. I just enjoy the potential for humour on this forum as has been demonstrated previously, irrespective of FPL's rules.
The translation was "Bogged and pee on the floor and toilet." In a perfect world, Steven's surname would be Peedinthar.

    regarding arsenal:
    1) http://www.wayfaring.info/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/emirates_stadium1.jpg did they just find this stadium and think "sweet! all this for free, let's move in!" remind me who else has moved to a big shiny new stadium lately and has carried on spending like an economy-busting moron. clubs like liverpool and spurs have had to hold back plans as they don't have the finances or the success to create the finances to help fund their short term sacrifice long term gain move.
    2) nasri and fabregas haven't gone anywhere yet so there's no money or no point buying (fabregas will be better than any replacement they can find).
    3) they've sold clichy (bought for about £200k sold for about £7mil) and brought in gervinho. they have an english youth product in gibbs to come in.
bloody wenger making a profit and caring about the club *shakes fist*

Arsenal make record profits, and are owned by TWO billionaires. How much longer can they flog the stadium excuse while the board pockets the most expensive season tickets in the country?

i'll give you the season ticket price point. the financial burden of the stadium should be easing year by year, i'd love to actually know how close they are to working from a clean slate in that respect.
the legacy of that stadium is huge. they're not man utd so don't have that huge established revenue base (just look at the internet, half the internet seems to support man utd!). should they stay in the top 4 after paying off the stadium then having a ridiculously healthy financial base to push on from then wenger has left a great legacy. he earned the chance to build the stadium with his success then so far has kept them there in the 'sacrifice' stage which should be coming to an end. if they don't stay in the top 4 it will be because of man city essentially cheated their way to it instead, as well as chelsea.

These are good points applebonkers. People traditionally allow clubs to be in a 'transitional period' for no more than 2 seasons absolute max. Any longer and it's a crisis - look at Liverpool, 2 decades and half a dozen false dawns because they never built properly. If they'd been sensible in the mid 90s then they would have had 10 years of challenging. Arsenal do appear to be doing things properly to me. But they really should sort out the season ticket prices, the current price policy is an excellent way of draining the supporters' patience.

agree with the ticket prices, a bit baffled by that over inflation increase. if anything i'd have thought they'd have the ability to hold back increases with each passing year.

Yup, it all makes sense Bonkers. They are healthy financially, but your average fan doesn't give a damn about that. They want Arsenal to a) beat spurs and b) win something. When they don't, you get unhappy fans, paying A LOT of money to watch a financially stable team.

In August 2005 Arsenal announced plans to replace most of the bank debt with bonds. The proposed bond issue went ahead on 13 July 2006. The club issued £210 million worth of 13.5 year bonds with a spread of 52 basis points over UK government bonds and £50 million of 7.1 year bonds with a spread of 22 basis points over LIBOR. And there's a new post.

i agree, but they moved stadium so they would have a better chance of beating spurs and winning trophies. football changed so they had to change, wenger's initial success gave them the chance to change and not get left behind.
when running a tight ship in the new stadium induced 'sacrifice stage' mistakes get amplified. 1 bad transfer or 1 non transfer sticks out like a sore thumb becuase there isn't the accompanying big top class player transfer to go with it and cover it.
little things get overlooked in the no trophy frustration. wenger has just turned clichy into gibbs and gervinho for example. what ever happens with nasri and fabregas gervinho covers every scenario in some way due to his versatility.
