Liverpool’s summer rebuilding programme look sets to kick in once again with the club tonight confirming that a bid for Villa’s Stewart Downing has been agreed.

The official word from the Anfield club is that Liverpool now have permission to discuss terms with the England winger with a medical presumably to follow prior to the weekend. Reports state that the fee involved is £20 million; it’s suggested that Villa are set to immediately reinvest funds by acquiring Charles N’Zogbia from Wigan – we can only await developments there.

Tonight’s news follows weeks of speculation surrounding Downing’s future at Villa Park with Arsenal also thought to be entering the race for his services; Downing was discussed as a possible replacement for Samir Nasri who, according to Arsene Wenger, now looks set to sit tight at the Emirates for the final year of his contract.

Downing now looks destined to join the likes of Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam amongst the Liverpool ranks, a move that will be greeted with a degree of disappointment by Fantasy managers.

With Ashley Young already plucked from Alex McLeish’s squad, Downing looked well placed to offer mid-price potential during Villa’s favourable opening to the season. Liverpool, in contrast, have a far trickier start to the campaign and their tough away fixtures may well see Downing’s anticipated popularity take a dent as a result.

One possible advantage of the move – given the timing, is that Downing may well still be classified as a Villa player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and his price may well be kept lower as a result. There is however, growing concern when assessing the potential of Liverpool’s squad with the midfield now boasting an array of talent that looks certain to involve regular rotation of assets throughout the season.

We will put Downing’s prospects at Anfield, including the impact of his arrival on Kenny Dalglish’s burgeoning squad, under the microscope in a Scout Report to follow.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

For those who are wondering. The packed Liverpool midfield is to ensure against injuries and when they are playing against smaller teams using negative tactics. Notice that many of the top Liverpool midfielders can play out of position i.e. Downing can also play on the other wing and shoot with his right foot too. Gerrard is versatile in positions. Henderson is a midfielder and winger. Liverpool will have a very very strong bench which is needed to be a top club being able to win the league and champions league in the near future. King Kenny knows this as he had a strong bench when he won 3 league titles as manager.

Henderson played 11 games out of 37 out wide. Hardly makes him a winger.

enter button > bobbydinho...to finish my thought, Can he play cover on the right? I would say so as RM but not a winger. In 9 of the 11 matches he started at RM his average position was just around the circle. The lads a CM by trade and heart. You have Kuyt to play out there and is loads better in that role than young Jordan for me. Either way he will add cover and depth for your domestic games.

I think Dalglish has lots of problems with player selections...does he play with Carroll up front and Kuyt in MF or Kuyt and Saurez up front together? Does Gerrard sit back and Meireles play in a more attacking role? Where do Adam and Henderson fit into that MF? What does he do to solve the issues at the back? Good luck KK...you'll need it!

I see the Brazilians have adopted the German and Man U tactic of blasting a powerful shot at goal whenever given the chance and usually getting a tuck-awayable rebound. And it works!

you've clearly never run a business. that's not a personal attack, mind you.

i'll give you another example from my own business (which i run myself here in china):

i do feasibility and market studies for shopping center developments in china. i try to focus on one market (e.g. shanghai), because much of the market information can be recycled across multiple studies. i pay people to gather the research once, but i can amortize that cost across multiple clients who request (and pay for) the same information. as the number of clients rises, the cost of conducting the research takes up less and less of new revenues in the door. firms like jones lang lasalle, savills, and cbre do exactly the same thing on a larger scale. manufacturers do the same thing. the concept is called economies of scale. pretty much every successful business does this. if the business gets too good at it, a monopoly emerges, at which point the government steps in to level the playing field.

ffs invested in the opta license, server hardware, online space, general hardware and then invested all of the staff's time, and the success of the model then comes from the increase in revenues from new membership, deals with fpl, paddy power and so on. the more members that sign up, the less the cost amortized across each member. at some point last year, the cost of everything they've invested in ran close to 100% of each member's membership cost. maybe today it's running around 60-75%. in a couple of years it'll be at 30-40%, and the model will be judged a success.

hope that clarifies why what they're doing is not "wrong".

Looks like you're doing a good job there, TA, but in terms of China then amortising and extending the customer data (e.g. Shanghai) to other regions, and assuming that the results of your research are still valid is a big mistake. Believe me. I've done it.

The rest of your post I completely agree with. 🙂

was going to respond, then remembered that this is a football forum. to be brief....very good point: fortunately, i don't extrapolate across markets here, as the diversity is far too great (as you seem to know!). the main thing in my model that spans markets is the method of collecting data and the type of analysis my firm brings. collecting more valuable information and drawing better conclusions, happily, is a practice that CAN be universally applied!

Thank God i refrained from becoming a member.

£12.50 for a bunch of stats which is now available to the whole world. What a rip-off!

        this is false.

what will be available to the world is two articles a week, for those who bother to read them. the stats, projections, etc etc etc will remain the sole property of ffs and paid members.

we have a winner. This reminds me of the sheep who listen to FoxNews in the states and claim it as fact with no research. With rights come responsibilities.

Simon is spot on, the communuity aspect of the site will almost certainly be destroyed.

This could be a good time for a breakway site for the core to use as somewhere to chat after the big cash in.

And of course, Simon and you are just so helpful and kind.

If the destruction of the forums mean that both of you go away for good then that's really no great loss.

But I'll bet you'll post again, and pay for it if you need to.

so it's hard to choose for liverpool mid now with plenty of rotation involving adam, henderson and downing (if he joined)the team, so how about those regular starter kuyt, lucas, maxi etc ???

like to hear the input from you guy .....

been wondering about it, too, as i feel like liverpool is ready for a pretty strong resurgence.

i've been told that gerrard, lucas, downing, suarez and kuyt are the ones to look at as starters in midfield, leaving henderson, meireles, maxi and henderson on the subs bench.

sounds reasonable enough to me. but if the above is true, then gerrard will be playing a more defensive role than in past seasons, so downing, suarez and kuyt would be the ones to look at for attacking returns.

      others? thoughts?
