Aston Villa have this evening confirmed the capture the of Man City keeper Shay Given on a five-year deal.

The 35-year-old joins Alex McLeish’s squad and will claim the number one jersey following the departure of Brad Friedel to Tottenham.

McLeish was understandably delighted at sealing the deal for the Republic of Ireland stopper, a player with proven Premier League pedigree who had found himself sidelined by the burgeoning talent of Joe Hart at Eastlands. Given made just 11 appearances for City last season, none of which were in the Premier League.

The Villa boss gave us this via the club’s official announcement…

“Shay has come here probably with something of a point to prove and that won’t do any harm at all…Everybody who has watched him perform over many years in the Premier League will know his pedigree, so we believe we have secured the services of one of the best goalkeepers in the business.”

For Fantasy Managers tonight’s confirmation will come as significant news. Villa have been blessed with a very kind opening set of fixtures (ful BLA WOL eve NEW qpr) that promises returns at both ends of the field. While Villa have lost the services of both Ashley Young and Stewart Downing in attacking quarters, the rearguard remains intact and in McLeish they have a manager renowned for favouring a defensive outlook.

Given is likely to be available in the mid-price bracket; he claimed a 6.0 initial price tag in the Fantasy Premier League last season but, having suffered a season of frustration, he is set to drop this term. Coupled with a favourable schedule of fixtures, Given will likely prove a popular target for the opening two months of the season as the trend for low-to-mid price Fantasy keepers continues.

I appreciate it's not rocket science, but it helps keep you in check. I did it last season with a small pot and made good returns, the kind of returns where at the end you think "I wish I started with a larger pot...". I'm going to try again this year with a bit more cash involved.

  The first three 'rules' are probably neither good nor bad - they might be helpful to some - but the staking plan is plain bad. Most serious punters recommend you put 1% or 2% of your betting pot on each play if winning safely is your main reason for gambling, which this guide says it is
  
  20% on each play will will sooner or later reduce your betting pot drastically when you're unlucky a few times in a row, and you're likely to never get it back

It's hardly ground breaking stuff but I got a reply from FPL developers last night to my email I sent on Friday about 18:30 (Work emails so I couldn't check earlier) and they are still saying Mid-July ... makes me think it could be today/tomorrow ... touchwood: (Willing to forward email to people who won't believe me).

Good afternoon,

The new game will start around mid-July, although there is no fixed date as yet. You will need to select another team. However, your login details will remain the same. For league administrators there will also be an option to restart your leagues.

      For the start of the season I like the look of Junior Hoillet at 2.5m and Bobby Zamora at 3.5m.
      
      It's my first season on this game, but from the way the scoring works it looks like it's worth splashing out on defenders from the likes of City and Chelsea, so I think Hart at 4.5 looks decent value... although Reina at 4m could be a decent shout too.

        Yeah I think Reina is good value at 4.0 .. I tend to go for a cheap keeper usually though so someone like Schwarzer 2.5 (Europa league points) or Mignolet (1.5 I think) are both tempting me in goal ...

the guy that runs our league has just sent out an email including the words: "...having now seen that the Premier League is not running a fantasy footie game for the 2011/12 season...".
He has jumped ship to the Metro game which I've taken a look at and can't be bothered with. That's 45 users who won't be playing the official game and will defect to Metro. More importantly, i won't be able to defend my hard-earned title. Damn you FPL.

    i guess it's holidays. i agree - there's no rush, but if the league admin is going away it might be leaving it tight if he wants to get all 45 on board because some of them will be away as well. I have offered to set up the league when FPL finally opens so hopefully a few may join both.

I'm really happy about Shay Given going to Villa just on the point that he'll finally get to play again and if he comes up cheap for the FPL, that would make it an even sweeter thing. It'll be nice to have another cheap goalie who can bring in lots of points with saves to replace Foster now that Birmingham is gone.

      Saha will be, but he'll be injured constantly. Can't see Beckford being less than 7 unles they sign another big striker before the game opens.
      
      He was effective last year and his price will go up, I think.
