While the Fantasy Premier League player list is taking up the bulk of our time, sapping our energies and thinking – some will no doubt have noticed that Wednesday’s launch also brought several rule changes. One such tweak involved the allocation of Bonus Points. The “man in the stand†from the Press Association is no longer the “judge and jury†behind these points – from this season the FPL have gone back to a method driven by an Index, fuelled by statistics that measure player actions and team performance.

The EA SPORTS Player Performance Index (EA SPORTS PPI) will now be the recipient of our post-match wrath – although given that cold hard statistics will be behind it, it’s going to be more difficult to justify the bile.

Such a change inevitably poses some questions but for us at Fantasy Football Scout, it also gives us the opportunity to offer a new feature to offer Members a helping hand.

What is the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index?

The Premier League site offers a full explanation of this right here so we won’t go into too much detail. Effectively the index uses an algorithm to provide a single value which offers an appraisal of a player’s performance in a Premier League match. That algorithm takes into account a variety of statistics gathered from a match reflecting player actions on the pitch such as – shots, clearances, saves etc. Goals scored, assists and clean sheets are perhaps the biggest factors in the calculation of the index score but crucially, the outcome of the match is also very significant. A player in the winning team is far more likely to register a high EA SPORTS PPI score than a player on the losing side.

What does this mean for the Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points?

It’s hard to say. While we are likely to have more visibility on the factors that affect the award of the Bonus Points, it’s still very difficult to predict which players will benefit next season. The fact that winning performances are crucial suggests that players amongst the top sides will be far more likely to earn big totals of Bonus Points than those turning out for struggling sides. To put this into perspective, Charlie Adam had the highest Bonus Point total in the Fantasy Premier League game last season. However, he ranked just 20th overall in the EA SPORTS PPI.

It’s also notable that, out of the top 25 EA SPORTS PPI ranked players last season, 10 of them were Man United or Chelsea players, 3 were at Man City, 2 at Liverpool and 1 at Arsenal. Charlie Adam was the only player from a relegated club in the top 30. Scott Parker – the player of the year last season – was not in the top 10 midfielders and was ranked 70th overall.

The jury is very much out on the effectiveness of the EA SPORTS PPI then but we can only really speculate on how it will distribute the FPL Bonus Points until the season is underway. One thing we’re pretty sure on – we noticed last season that goalscorers were big beneficiaries of Bonus Point awards – our guess is that this will continue with the implementation of the EA SPORTS PPI. Goalscorers on winning sides are set for regular gains then. Is that any different to the old PA Sports method? Only time will tell.

How can Fantasy Football Scout help?

At least now we know that the statistics available to our Members have a definite impact on a player’s likelihood of earning FPL Bonus Points. Our Members already have access to the statistics that contribute to the EA SPORTS PPI via our Opta data. By interrogating last season’s data now, you can already get a view on the top performers across the statistics that matter. We will be publishing members articles to aid this process too.

As you no doubt will have heard, Fantasy Football Scout are also contributing articles to the FPL this season. “The Scout†will examine the Bonus Point allocation each gameweek and attempt to breakdown the factors behind the awards using the EA SPORTS PPI data.

We’re going to provide something new however. Something a little extra…

The Scout ICT Index – Influence, Creativity and Threat

We have a new way for Members to read and analyse statistics this season. We’ve built our own Fantasy Football Index – the Scout “ICT†Index. This measures the performance of Premier League players in three key areas – Influence, Creativity and Threat. The first of those, a player’s Influence, will use similar performance indicators to the EA SPORTS PPI via our Opta data, although our algorithm will be different.

Our index score for Influence won’t take the results into consideration and will therefore offer a level playing field to those players who suffer defeat in a match. In this way our Index will hopefully be effective at finding influential players within struggling clubs, but should still offer our Members a view on which players are more likely to score highly in the EA SPORTS PPI and therefore be in line for Bonus Points. While the FPL Bonus Points arriving “the morning after matches†– our members can get access to our ICT index once we update our data – often just 10-20 minutes after the final whistle has blown.

In basic terms the ICT index will help to make our Opta data more digestible. It will offer one single index score for Influence, one for Creativity and one for Threat. These will help to measure a player’s importance to their team and to a match, a player’s likelihood to earn assists and to score goals, or at least get in goalscoring situations. Those three figures will then be combined to create a single ICT Index score to measure a player’s overall performance contribution from a Fantasy perspective.

Index scores will be generated on a gameweek basis and cumulatively over the season. The full Opta data will still be available of course, but Members will now have an easy route to identify how players are performing across the key statistics.

The index, like any football index, will be far from perfect. There will be tweaks along the way. Plenty of discussions as we go. Even so, the ICT Index is already providing us with plenty of talking points and insight behind the scenes and we think it’s going to be a valuable addition for our Members. It will also give us plenty of material to discuss in a series of new Members articles.

We currently have the ICT Index in test and will be creating new tables and new sidebar widgets that will give Members quick access to the top performers on our Index on a gameweek basis and over the season as a whole. These widgets will also form the basis of our new dashboard available to Members when they log into the Members area.

Keep ‘em peeled for more news on this in the next few weeks.

The observation that the highest scorers on the BP index tend to come from the top teams may serve as a bit of a red herring in practice. The bonus points will be allocated from the teams that are playing in any given game, so to pick up BPs you only need to score more than the other players in that game. The fourth best player in Man Utd vs Chelsea may score twice as many EA points than the best player in Wigan V Swansea, but it's the player in Wigan v Swansea that will pick up the fpl points.

      True, FOR THAT GAME.

      But next week when it's

      Chelsea v Swansea
      United v Wigan

and Wigan and Swansea both get done 3-0 there is basically no chance any player on the losing team will pick up any bonus even if they were as godlike at Charlie Adam at getting 3bps while losing.

But Wigan will win ten(?) games while United/Chelsea/Liverpool/Arsenal etc will win twenty(?).

Completely made up figures on number of wins, but with the win weighting it means that you're looking for those that will beat Wigan and Swansea - not the best of both those sides.

Sure, but the old system also weighted the bps towards players from the winning team, with the notable exception of Charlie Adam. What I'm getting at is that scoring highly on the EA figures won't necessarily mean BPs, someone could score less in a different game and pick up all 3. Obviously there's a degree of stating the obvious with this, I just want to warn against inferreing from the article that if you want BPs you have to pick 3 Man Utd, 3 Chelsea, 1 Man City etc..

Yep, you're spot on. Over the season players on winning sides do seem likely to have bigger totals of EA Index score but, for FPL purposes, it's all about the fixture in question. Some players, like N'Zogbia for example were previously immune to results to some extent so it will be interesting to see how they will come out of this.

All we know is that there is a change - that change will likely have some effect - the extent of that is unknown. We do know however that those players who rack up impressive stats are more likely to rank highly on the EA SPORTS PPI and therefore should have more chance of earning Bonus.

@ stilicho - I sort of get where you're coming from, and to be honest it is difficult to get one's head around, but the stats from last year are pretty clear - charlie adam comfortably outscored any other player in terms of FPL bonus points but limped home in 20th place in the EA rankings, behind the likes of Kevin Nolan and Dirk Kuyt.

to be fair though Adam was a bit of a freak in the FLP game. i don't recall ever seeing a payer who hogged BPs quite like him [other than maybe when someone like Henry or CRonaldo was banging in 30+ goals a season and MOTM every other week]

      Couldn't agree more.

It should be taken into account when looking at the highest scorers is that those near the top may have got extremely high points in a few games and average points in the rest which wouldn't translate into regular baps.

It's also possible that some of the players near the top of the index were consistently 3/4/5th top scorer in every game, which translates into a high overall ranking but again, not many baps. Someone like Kompany is 7th in the standings and I could imagine him getting consistently good scores in games but always missing out on baps. Adam, on the other hand, is 20th but probably amassed nost of his points in the games that Blackpool won and very few when Blackpool lost. So he'd walk away with 2/3 baps in every win and ending up a lot better in fantasy terms.

So I think the skill is going to be picking out the players that shine when their team wins - no matter who they play for.

Alot of rumours going around the Newcastle camp that Ben Arfa was throwing hissy fits in America and was slightly feigning his injury to get home. He's unfortuntely always had a really bad attitute, which is why we got him so cheap last year.

He'll be back for the Leeds pre-season game for sure.

His fitness is far from the first issue.

You're depending on Arsenal selling both Fabregas and Nasri, and then not buying anyone to replace them.

Well for a keeper to earn bonus they are first going to need a clean sheet and secondly they will have to rack up saves to better any defender's stats - tackles, clearances, blocks.

Under the new system I would hazard a guess that Foster would have ended the season with more Bonus but I'm not convinced we will see a huge shift away from dominant centre-backs to keepers. If United keep a clean sheet, it seems unlikely that De Gea will have been busy enough to return a stronger EA SPORTS PPI than someone like Vidic who will fetch clearances and tackles no matter what.

        Hi Mark

Thats my thinking, but if the WIN and Clean sheet influence he BPs points for the likes of Foster etc last year would have been less - compared to someone like Joe Hart.

But every 3 saves still gets a keeper a point, whereas 3 blocks doesn't get a defender any points. The BP's are still limited

Yes, but having a blinder as a keeper probably wont earn you 3 BPs as it did last year with likes of foster if brum lost 2-1 as no clean sheet and team loses = less weighting.

I see what you mean Evs but I'm not sure that happened all that regularly anyway - I could of course be wrong but I'm not going to check! I just don't see this new index changing the overall distribution of BP's all that much but we shall see eh

Moses plays quite far forward. Decent player. I'll either have him or Rodallega for the first three games. Rodders to Wingie GW4 looks a good shout - you'll have 5 games on the bounce against newly promoted teams in that case.

    So all these RMTs.

What's everyones favourite layout when it comes to writing your own RMT. Personally I opt for the space between each new line i.e

    Given Al-Habsi

    Kompany Orr Simpson Vidic Ferdinand

Having no gap obviously saves space but the gap makes it easier to read. Do you like seeing the full squad or the starting 11 with subs at the bottom?

This is the important issue right now

Shane Ferguson, he'll be played mostly at LB even though he's really a LW. I was playing with him a few weeks ago when he was back here in 5-a-side and he raped us all even though he looks like a 12 year old.

He's good, but wouldn't even bother looking at him FPL wise. A few subs appearances here and there is all you'll get.

Yeah I quite like the thought of Sessegnon in my team so may have a re-think as I don't think I'm really going ot want Tchyoi.

I do want some kind of Villa coverage though so Albrighton may have to be it

Back 5 is actually exactly what I had earlier.

Ireland if hes fit could be excellent value for Villa cover.

Hunter or any other Villa fans around?

Now Young has gone who will be on corners and free kicks? I guess N'Zog may get FKs if he signs, if not who?

        Before GW1.

        Tevez leaves.

Aguero signs and gets priced at £12m.

Who would put him in their teams?

                Van Persie - Poor fixtures
                Rooney - Poor fixtures
Tevez - Good fixtures but probably won't be at City
Drogba - Good fixtures but who knows if he will start
                Torres - See above
Suarez - Decent fixtures but might play deep

People are saying Lampard is expensive, but at least he will 100% play, I'd rather spend big on him than any of these strikers above who all have doubts surrounding them.

I can afford Lampard and Suarez instead of Silva and RVP. Just means I have no Arsenal or City attacking coverage. Would at least like some City.

Yeah, City or just a wait and see for me. I don't really think Silva is worth it at 9.5 so will probably get Tevez' replacement or Tevez himself if he sticks around.

I don't actually mind not having any Arsenal in my team until GW4, fixtures are horrible.

Bent. But I think it's a lot to spend on a striker who relies so heavily on goals for his points. Neither get many bp's or assists but maybe that could change with the new scoring system?

Indeed. I wanted it from day one of the members but didn't have time to get it done. The Index will have issues and bugs but already, it's serving some interesting results when we use last season's data to test it.

Having immediate widgets for each gameweek showing Top 10 Most Influential, Top 10 Creators, Top 10 Goal Threats is going to be a big bonus for Members. Then on player profiles, we're going to track changes in a player's ICT scores so Members can recognise trends. Plus of course, it will give us bags of content for our articles - we will have a weekly ICT based article to cover these.

Mark, what did you think of the changes to assists? I noticed the wording is a bit odd and suggests that any deflections by defenders inside the box will no longer prevent an assist being awarded...am I reading that right?

I'm not exactly sure where EA SPORTS get their stats - Actim was using the PA Sports data - EA may well be the same or they may use another supplier.

Granny is nagging me for a pre-season one but I've loads on getting the redesign rolled out. As soon as I'm over the next hurdle with that then I might give in and get one recorded. Time, as always, is not on my side but Granny won't give up so a pre-season episode is likely.
