While the Fantasy Premier League player list is taking up the bulk of our time, sapping our energies and thinking – some will no doubt have noticed that Wednesday’s launch also brought several rule changes. One such tweak involved the allocation of Bonus Points. The “man in the stand” from the Press Association is no longer the “judge and jury” behind these points – from this season the FPL have gone back to a method driven by an Index, fuelled by statistics that measure player actions and team performance.

The EA SPORTS Player Performance Index (EA SPORTS PPI) will now be the recipient of our post-match wrath – although given that cold hard statistics will be behind it, it’s going to be more difficult to justify the bile.

Such a change inevitably poses some questions but for us at Fantasy Football Scout, it also gives us the opportunity to offer a new feature to offer Members a helping hand.

What is the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index?

The Premier League site offers a full explanation of this right here so we won’t go into too much detail. Effectively the index uses an algorithm to provide a single value which offers an appraisal of a player’s performance in a Premier League match. That algorithm takes into account a variety of statistics gathered from a match reflecting player actions on the pitch such as – shots, clearances, saves etc. Goals scored, assists and clean sheets are perhaps the biggest factors in the calculation of the index score but crucially, the outcome of the match is also very significant. A player in the winning team is far more likely to register a high EA SPORTS PPI score than a player on the losing side.

What does this mean for the Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points?

It’s hard to say. While we are likely to have more visibility on the factors that affect the award of the Bonus Points, it’s still very difficult to predict which players will benefit next season. The fact that winning performances are crucial suggests that players amongst the top sides will be far more likely to earn big totals of Bonus Points than those turning out for struggling sides. To put this into perspective, Charlie Adam had the highest Bonus Point total in the Fantasy Premier League game last season. However, he ranked just 20th overall in the EA SPORTS PPI.

It’s also notable that, out of the top 25 EA SPORTS PPI ranked players last season, 10 of them were Man United or Chelsea players, 3 were at Man City, 2 at Liverpool and 1 at Arsenal. Charlie Adam was the only player from a relegated club in the top 30. Scott Parker – the player of the year last season – was not in the top 10 midfielders and was ranked 70th overall.

The jury is very much out on the effectiveness of the EA SPORTS PPI then but we can only really speculate on how it will distribute the FPL Bonus Points until the season is underway. One thing we’re pretty sure on – we noticed last season that goalscorers were big beneficiaries of Bonus Point awards – our guess is that this will continue with the implementation of the EA SPORTS PPI. Goalscorers on winning sides are set for regular gains then. Is that any different to the old PA Sports method? Only time will tell.

How can Fantasy Football Scout help?

At least now we know that the statistics available to our Members have a definite impact on a player’s likelihood of earning FPL Bonus Points. Our Members already have access to the statistics that contribute to the EA SPORTS PPI via our Opta data. By interrogating last season’s data now, you can already get a view on the top performers across the statistics that matter. We will be publishing members articles to aid this process too.

As you no doubt will have heard, Fantasy Football Scout are also contributing articles to the FPL this season. “The Scout” will examine the Bonus Point allocation each gameweek and attempt to breakdown the factors behind the awards using the EA SPORTS PPI data.

We’re going to provide something new however. Something a little extra…

The Scout ICT Index – Influence, Creativity and Threat

We have a new way for Members to read and analyse statistics this season. We’ve built our own Fantasy Football Index – the Scout “ICT” Index. This measures the performance of Premier League players in three key areas – Influence, Creativity and Threat. The first of those, a player’s Influence, will use similar performance indicators to the EA SPORTS PPI via our Opta data, although our algorithm will be different.

Our index score for Influence won’t take the results into consideration and will therefore offer a level playing field to those players who suffer defeat in a match. In this way our Index will hopefully be effective at finding influential players within struggling clubs, but should still offer our Members a view on which players are more likely to score highly in the EA SPORTS PPI and therefore be in line for Bonus Points. While the FPL Bonus Points arriving “the morning after matches” – our members can get access to our ICT index once we update our data – often just 10-20 minutes after the final whistle has blown.

In basic terms the ICT index will help to make our Opta data more digestible. It will offer one single index score for Influence, one for Creativity and one for Threat. These will help to measure a player’s importance to their team and to a match, a player’s likelihood to earn assists and to score goals, or at least get in goalscoring situations. Those three figures will then be combined to create a single ICT Index score to measure a player’s overall performance contribution from a Fantasy perspective.

Index scores will be generated on a gameweek basis and cumulatively over the season. The full Opta data will still be available of course, but Members will now have an easy route to identify how players are performing across the key statistics.

The index, like any football index, will be far from perfect. There will be tweaks along the way. Plenty of discussions as we go. Even so, the ICT Index is already providing us with plenty of talking points and insight behind the scenes and we think it’s going to be a valuable addition for our Members. It will also give us plenty of material to discuss in a series of new Members articles.

We currently have the ICT Index in test and will be creating new tables and new sidebar widgets that will give Members quick access to the top performers on our Index on a gameweek basis and over the season as a whole. These widgets will also form the basis of our new dashboard available to Members when they log into the Members area.

Keep ‘em peeled for more news on this in the next few weeks.

not to put too finer a point on it but isnt there already a ppi in fpl? isnt the leaders board for points scorers an index of who has been scoring well? and why do they need to create such a convoluted way to try and figure out a number for who is playing well? they already had one..the score! it is based on goals, assists, clean sheets, minutes played cards ect..seems simple enough to work!

The score of course shows who's been playing well, but sometimes the stats may tell you that a player has been unlucky. If you notice that they've had a fair few shots on targets, etc etc and have a good run of fixtures you may want to take a punt on them. Something you maybe wouldn't do by checking current score.

hmm i preffered that reply to the simple 'no' from earler..that was somewhat less helpful.

its true what you say... i guess i just see who i think is on the verge of fpl greatness by watching the games, ive never been one for stats, stats can be made to prove or disprove anything.

i always thought we could do away witrh the bp's...just give a bonus for a hatrick (they always get the 3 bp anyway) and some kind of bonus for a certain amount of midfield passes made and defender blocks or something. zero ambuigity... this new way will be no less controversial to the last one -

    Defensive combinations.

With the inclusion of Bad K, a rotation of defenders from SWN, QPR, FUL and SUN go nicely together for the first 10 weeks except week 3. You'd get a minimum of 2 playing at home each week.

QPR/SWN alternate perfectly and there are some nice ubercheap price options about with the exception of FUL who have the best fixtures.

    Any quality chat on this?

I'd back SWN to concede less than QPR, that's the best I can say about either of them really. Caulker looks a prospect, but in a promoted team quite likely to go down, as is QPR, dunno do I really want a def from either.

Hmmm...both teams had very impressive defensive efforts last year particularly at home.

Remmember, you'd only select one player from these teams each week not both given their nice rotation.

I like it. Plenty of safe, consistent performers. From the last two seasons at least.

Question mark over Rafael, perhaps. And just feels like some of those tried and trusted picks might be fading stars this season - Downing, Duff, H-Rod and the Drogfather in danger of failing to live up to past glories...

I do like it, there's good logic behind all them picks. It's tempting to try to think outside the box, but sometimes the answer you're looking for will be sitting right there in the box.

Those 4 I mentioned have as much chance of shining even brighter as they have of fading.

Brown wasn't really a threat last year to Rafael's place but O'Shea was. Rafael and Fabio will rotate this year so there's still a risk of rotation. Fabio seemed to play more at the end of last season in the RB position.

A word of warning on Orr, I have him in my team, Swansea defence looks good at home and a disaster away - they only let in 11 at home (with 4 more home fixtures in the Championship), but 31 away and I'd assume away form will be even worse in the prem.

You know, the one thing I've learnt from last year is that its good to listen to others but when its comes down to it, you really need to just go with your gutt.

For example, I made some solid picks at the beggining of the year with Carroll, Foster and Malouda, however the problem is, I also changed some of my picks to Rooney and Valencia and some other changes in my defense due to some bad advice.

So when everyone starts saying your squad sucks because you dont have RVP or something, they might end up being right but take it with a grain of salt. Don't get all flaky if someone doesnt like your squad, just make sure you like it when the first game starts on Aug 13. Nothing worse than being pissed off because you switched someone out you wanted and he ends up scoring like hell.

Example: Drogba last year, oh man I still can't believe I switched him out for Rooney, talk about the suck.

"I also changed some of my picks to Rooney and Valencia and some other changes in my defense due to some bad advice"

This is the problem. People only come on here to moan when they follow advice and it turns out bad. No-one ever comes on and praises someone for their advice.

You're probably right about the gut instinct though, at the end of the day you make all the decisions so you only have yourself to blame if you follow someones advice and go against your own ideas.

I think part of the reason all of this happens is that most of the advice on here can end up being nothing more than a personal opinion with no facts or anything to back it up.

With that said, there are some people on this site that really do know what they are talking about and its nice to chat with them and the articles on here are great too, just dont listen to everything you hear is all.

Most of it probably is personal opinions. Most people will give reasons why they have chosen that particular choice though.

Whatever you hear you need to decide for yourself as I originally said. Even the people who know what they're talking about get it wrong 🙂 After all, quite a bit of luck involved!

I prefer Silva to VDV. Not sure Lampard is worth 12m, but if we don't have a better idea of the formation and players AVB is going to pick then I guess he's a good option, considering Chelsea's fixtures.

    Barton,Albrighton,N'Zog,Malouda,Downing
    Rooney,Zamora,Holt

    2.5 in the bank

Gonna switch Rooney out for Suarez for GW2.

If N'Zog goes to Villa before the season starts and Fabs goes to Barca, I'll be switching Albrighton out for Ramsey. I still have 2.5 left to, so I can screw around with my defense a bit still to.

You're going to take out Rooney, home to Spurs out for Suarez, away to Arsenal? Seems a bit odd.

Be careful with the Ramsey pick, if Nasri stays and Fabs goes then Ramsey may not step straight up.

Me too, pretty set on about 5 or 6 players already, just filling in the blanks. The hardest decision is deciding on strikers, that obviously massively affects the rest of you team. I'm looking at 2/3 big guns from 5 at the moment.

Yeah just tinkering again i like the sound of A. I want city and chelsea attack, that could only work with Malouda and Yaya.

Looks decent to me... there's chat about Bardsley not being a guaranteed starter and I'm not sure DeVries will start for Wolves (can see the keeper spot changing during the season at Molineux like this year).

Like it. Only thing I'd ask is about Samba, how much is he? Just wondered if their was any one better at that price considering Blackburn aren't quite as strong defensively as they were under Big Sam.

If Samba goes to Arsenal he'll be as popular as Kompany is. If not more popular!

Nice, but I'd worry about a lack of bonus points with the new bonus structure.

ok thanks for the advice, but why would this team not get bp's with the new bonus stucture?

I only said i'd worry, not that you definately won't. Bonus points are heavily favoured towards players on the winning team. So in terms of bonus points, great individual displays like charlie adams heroics last year, will get you less if the player isn't on the winning team. SO i'd hazard a guess your only real bonus magnets are cole, kompany, silva and lamps

Couldn't Disagree more...Lamps will always get Baps, Silva (according to Demi, who I defo listen too) could be top Bapper this year, N'Zog will always get baps too (esp. if he goes to Villa) Sinclair I think will rule Baps when they're being awarded to qpr and albrighton will defo get a few...

Bent is BapMagnet, personally think Ba will rule Baps for Newc and Rod will be main man at Wigan when N'Zog goes

Cashley under AVB will be more attacking than last year, hence more Baps IMO, Kompany is solid so not many but a bit of bappage....even think Given will pick up a Bap or 2, so all in all i think this team is Baptastic

basically other than kompany being a bapazoid my team should oooooooooze baps and be bapalicious, yeah?

lol well for his sake i hope you're right. Its just a concern that last years FPL toptastic bapmagnet was adam, yet on the scoring system they are adopting this year he was 20th.
Kompany only got 6 bonus points on fpl last year, but the new ranking system had him 7th highest rated player.
All i think is that Bap-Fortune will favour players from the top 4 clubs heavily

      Looking good.

Although I would get rid of Lampard (£12M) - As we won't know his role in the team? Maybe Malouda instead and spend a bit more on Forwards or MF?
