While we wait for Manchester City to confirm the Sergio Aguero transfer, our thoughts turn to yesterday’s friendlies amongst other matters, with Andres Villas-Boas experimental formation and subsequent use of Frank Lampard the major talking point. Here’s this morning’s Scout Scribbles:

Javier Hernandez looks set to be sidelined for around a fortnight, according to Sir Alex Ferguson. The Mexican suffered concussion after being hit by a stray ball in training and was kept overnight in hospital as a precautionary measure. The United boss explained:

We took him to the hospital, he had a scan, it was all clear. But he probably wouldn’t have been playing in a couple of weeks anyway because he’s just come back from his break after playing in the Gold Cup for Mexico. He wasn’t going to be involved in our team for two or three weeks.

While Hernandez watched on from his hospital bed, Dimitar Berbatov played a significant part in United’s 4-0 demolition of a MLS All-Stars XI that included David Beckham and Thierry Henry. The Bulgarian grabbed his side’s third in what was a comprehensive victory and sees the club continue their impressive pre-season form ahead of Saturday’s game with Barcelona.

Reports suggest David Moyes may have to start the season without his midfield playmaker Mikel Arteta. The Spaniard suffered a foot injury against Philadelphia Union in the club’s US tour last week and with subsequent severe bone bruising, will miss out on the upcoming friendlies against Birmingham and Werder Bremen. Moyes, however, is still hopeful the player will recover in time for the season kick-off in just over two weeks time.

Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Hong Kong champions Kitchee was most notable for Andres Villas-Boas starting formation. The new Blues boss is still weighing up his options but, intriguingly, started with Frank Lampard in a deep lying central midfield role as his side took to the field in a 4-2-3-1. Lampard vowed to continue getting forward, regardless:

I do like to get forward and this won’t be a role that will stop me getting into the box. As long as I’m never told not to stray beyond the half way line, I’ll be happy. I love getting into box, getting up and down the pitch.

I know I can do it now and, hopefully, I can do it for a few more years. I do have to look after myself. You look at Ryan Giggs and people like that, who hang around in their 30s, and they have to be disciplined about what they do.

Fantasy managers will be wary of investing in Lampard if this formation becomes the norm- at 12.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he’s perhaps too much of a dent in the budget for a deep-lying midfielder, regardless of penalty duties. With so much press attention focused on his chosen formation, however, Villas-Boas gave an explanation as to his thinking:

Frank has the ability to play in that role and it is good that he feels so well in that position and gives us that flexibility. Frank is one of the best players in the world and he has the flexibility to play in many positions: in a number eight position, a number 10 position or a holding position.

We have seen throughout his career that he has the ability so it is nothing new that we were trying today, and it does not mean that we are going to use it to the fullness. We are just happy to see that the players are able to play in various positions.

The 4-2-3-1 allowed Yossi Benayoun the central role behind Didier Drogba and the Israeli was voted Man of the Match with a commanding performance. At 7.0 he’d be an absolute steal but Chelsea look likely to invest in a midfield creator, lessening his Fantasy appeal.

Mick McCarthy’s Wolves continued their pre-season with a comfortable 2-0 win at Glasgow Celtic. Jamie O’Hara highlighted his dead-ball ability by curling home a free-kick for the opener and Big Mick admitted he’s close to his first-choice line-up, praising the centre-half partnership of Roger Johnson and Christophe Berra in particular.

Birmingham City continue to shed their players at an alarming rate following last season’s relegation. Midlands neighbours West Brom look set to be the latest beneficiaries of the club’s financial woes- Ben Foster has already been linked with a move to the Hawthorns but Liam Ridgewell is also reportedly set to join Roy Hodgson’s side and help boost a defence that conceded 71 goals last season.

Reports suggest Valencia midfielder Juan Mata has moved closer to a move to the Emirates, with representatives of the player flying into London yesterday for talks. If it transpires, the transfer would certainly move Cesc Fabregas closer to the Arsenal exit door and finally put an end to the years of speculation surrounding his possible return to Barcelona.

Sounds familiar this, two years ago the experts said to stay away from Arsenal players because of the fixtures and to jump on Wigan last year for the same reason.

Arsenal scored 6 at Everton with Fabregas and van Persie running riot while Boselli flopped as Blackpool smashed them.

Fixtures are just a guide, Van Der Vaart is fixture proof.

I bet half of FFS members will change their teams when they realise an overlooked superstar such as VDV or Nani starts banging in goals and their supposed "bargain" of the season turns out to be cast out into a cess(engnon) pool

2.5 in bank for either Malouda/Lamps for GW2. Ive gone with a budget defence here. But it doesnt really bother me much.

Adel Taarabt got 90 minutes under his belt in his first pre-season outing and Warnock added: "He needed to get some game time and I told him I wanted him to play the full match.

"He lasted well, even though he faded a bit from the 60 minute mark.

"It's good for him to get the time in the bank and it will serve him well going forward."

      Not optimistic IMO. Change him.

I'd go Toure Moses - - Lots of fear that Yaya will be played further back this year but I don't see why, think he'll be high up the pitch at least for the start of the season anyway. Moses is my wildcard, hoping he'll score big this season, and is no way a bad choice for a 5th mid anyway.

Seg - Taarabt - too much uncertainty in taarabt, got be great or could be flop... Lots of seg love, I'd like to see him a couple of games first before i go for him.

Murphy bar penalties is a bit useless and I wouldn't double up on Fulham just yet. Go for Sinclair or Ohara at the same price. Might be a bit light up top but not terrible by any means.

I like Wigans opening fix so I've went for Moses and Rod - money providing I'll take in Odem after GW3. And Zams the man! No way should he be considered going light on top! ha!

If Fulham go all out attack this season as some are predicting I can see Murphy having a great year... but you're probably correct, maybe too early to call that. I don't like O'Hara on the new BP system but sinclair could be worth a look.

"If Fulham go all out attack this season as some are predicting I can see Murphy having a great year"...their slow play centrally last season was why his old ass was even playing. Wigan will have a stronger season than many have given them credit for. They will lose one out of their first three.

Most people believe bonus points will go to goal scorers from winning teams. For me Baines and Cole won't get many if thats the case.

I am not spending much on my defence this year but thats just my opionion. I'll keep an eye on the likes of Bosingwa, Rafael, Kelly, Gibbs to see if they become regulars and bring them in then.

Waaay too much. Defense is one of the few places you can get something for nothing. People just don't wanna have to do their homework. There will be another Baines this year. The current Baines will suffer a slump. The scouting report in the EPL is a biyatch!

It depends who they draw I suppose. The qualifier could be completely over after the first leg, and he'll have his feet up for the second. If they draw a big name, I may, jut may, change my mind on RVP.

Although, I HIGHLY doubt RVP will be rested for newc, LIV or mun. If anything it'll be the SWA game, when everyone brings him in.

Newcastle away is no way a poor fixture, especially as Arsenal seem to be better away, RVP is a serious captain possibility for me in GW1.

After Arsenal's first 3 tricky fixtures, we should have more of an idea of whether Ramsey is going to start, how far forward Wilshere will get etc.

Plenty of people will have Taarabt / Sinclair / Barton / Sessegnon, who are in the same price bracket and will be easy to swap out for Ramsey or Wilshere.

Seeing Wigans opening fixtures you would think that heavy invest is the way to go, and it seems that quite a few Wigan players are getting alot of love.

However, anyone remember the Boselli debacle from last year? I was all over the Wigan bandwagon like a pig in shit last year and that turned out great!! Not...

Are people just underrating the promoted teams? I admit i don't know much about the new promoted teams, but if Blackpool are an example promoted teams can be difficult due to them being highly motivated. Opinions?

It's impossible to call how the promoted teams will perform... one thing about them though is that defending in the championship is a lot different to defending against top rate strikers in the premiership... Rodallega is first class, I've backed him early on anyway... but then again, I would also pick wigan to drop this year! I do think they'll score goals in doing so though, and rod will be the man to put em away

Promoted sides usually start well, I think at least 2 of them will get off to a flyer so I dont see them as that favourable of Wigan, I'd rather be playing the Geordies away like Arsenal. 1 Wigan player at the most for me.

in general Wigan are crap, dunno why they keep getting the easy fixtures to start off with, its weird. I've got Wigan down for the drop this season, and not many of their players appeal anyway, maybe Al-HAbsi, maybe Moses, I personally dont rate Rodallega. I reackon Wigan will get max. 4pts from their opening 3 fixtures

I don't think Wigan have ever had a season where the majority of people don't think they'll be relegated. So massive prasie for that, they keep surviving when no-one thinks they will. I think there's 3 worse teams than them this year.

Also i wouldn't say they have an easy start. Playing the 3 promoted teams straight away is probably up their with the hardest starts IMO. All playing on the adrenaline of being in the Premier League, you want to play the promoted sides later on.

Sorry about that Louise, I had to do some work.

I reached the conclusion that Joe Cole was the Secret footballer by a process of elimination based on the things he mentions in his articles.

during my research, I found that many people guessed Danny Murphy, but there were details that didn't fit - he mentions his daughter frequently, but never mentions having two sons, which Murphy has.

The fact that he's been transferred between premier league teams.

He says he's worked with some really good managers, and rates Harry Redknapp very highly. This to me, fits Joe Cole, who has worked with Redknapp and Jose Mourinho.

Dragonator was the one who initially suggested Joe Cole, who mentioned that the foreign player who is always late for training could be Babel (I think), Joe's teammate.

He mentions being abused by fans after miscontrolling a pass a week before - this would be the game against WBA on April 2nd. I haven't seen footage, but he did come on as a sub in that game.

When you go back through the article, it's interesting to put faces to the situation. For example, he mentions a manager he always looked up to and always had the answers (and was very good with the press and the players), who asked him advice. I believe this was Mourinho.

And he also mentions another slightly sleazy manager, who I picture as Grant, but that's conjecture on my part.

basically, Joe cole ticks all the boxes.

      Oh, and:

I played with a foreign player who was a master at winning free-kicks after minimal contact. Our manager loved him and would say to us: "You all need to be more streetwise like Paolo," which roughly translated meant we "should all cheat more like Paolo".

He played with some guy called Paolo at West Ham.

"Some players want to be managers. But some managers still want to be players. I remember at one club being fined for going out to a pub with a couple of friends while injured. Notwithstanding the fact that this was a Tuesday evening, and therefore not in conflict with the rule that you must not be on licensed premises 48 hours before a game, the argument from my manager was that any alcohol would hamper my rehab. He fined me two weeks' wages.

I didn't argue, but as I left his room he turned from manager to player and, with a big, fat, stupid grin on his face, asked: 'By the way, did you get hold of anything?' He was referring to whether or not I escorted a young lady home, despite the fact that he knew I had a long-term girlfriend, and, as it turns out, was more disappointed that I had no story to tell than with what he was fining me for in the first place. That day we both lost respect for each other but for very different reasons.

I was young back then, but as you get older, and become a more senior member of the squad, things start to change. A manager may ask your opinion from time to time and, since assuming this position, I've found it a challenge to tell the manager what I really think and not just what I think.

The first time this happened I had been playing for the manager in question for a long time. He had always been a man who had all the answers and knew what was best, a man who I looked up to as a god of the game from the way he handled the players, the fans and the media. But now he was asking me the questions and it didn't feel right.

Part of the legend became humanised after that and I believed it would never come back. I felt it was a misjudgment by him to seek help from me, and it showed him up as a man who, at the time, was troubled. It turned out that, unlike Redknapp, he was not the Messiah. He was just a very good football manager."
