While we wait for Manchester City to confirm the Sergio Aguero transfer, our thoughts turn to yesterday’s friendlies amongst other matters, with Andres Villas-Boas experimental formation and subsequent use of Frank Lampard the major talking point. Here’s this morning’s Scout Scribbles:

Javier Hernandez looks set to be sidelined for around a fortnight, according to Sir Alex Ferguson. The Mexican suffered concussion after being hit by a stray ball in training and was kept overnight in hospital as a precautionary measure. The United boss explained:

We took him to the hospital, he had a scan, it was all clear. But he probably wouldn’t have been playing in a couple of weeks anyway because he’s just come back from his break after playing in the Gold Cup for Mexico. He wasn’t going to be involved in our team for two or three weeks.

While Hernandez watched on from his hospital bed, Dimitar Berbatov played a significant part in United’s 4-0 demolition of a MLS All-Stars XI that included David Beckham and Thierry Henry. The Bulgarian grabbed his side’s third in what was a comprehensive victory and sees the club continue their impressive pre-season form ahead of Saturday’s game with Barcelona.

Reports suggest David Moyes may have to start the season without his midfield playmaker Mikel Arteta. The Spaniard suffered a foot injury against Philadelphia Union in the club’s US tour last week and with subsequent severe bone bruising, will miss out on the upcoming friendlies against Birmingham and Werder Bremen. Moyes, however, is still hopeful the player will recover in time for the season kick-off in just over two weeks time.

Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Hong Kong champions Kitchee was most notable for Andres Villas-Boas starting formation. The new Blues boss is still weighing up his options but, intriguingly, started with Frank Lampard in a deep lying central midfield role as his side took to the field in a 4-2-3-1. Lampard vowed to continue getting forward, regardless:

I do like to get forward and this won’t be a role that will stop me getting into the box. As long as I’m never told not to stray beyond the half way line, I’ll be happy. I love getting into box, getting up and down the pitch.

I know I can do it now and, hopefully, I can do it for a few more years. I do have to look after myself. You look at Ryan Giggs and people like that, who hang around in their 30s, and they have to be disciplined about what they do.

Fantasy managers will be wary of investing in Lampard if this formation becomes the norm- at 12.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he’s perhaps too much of a dent in the budget for a deep-lying midfielder, regardless of penalty duties. With so much press attention focused on his chosen formation, however, Villas-Boas gave an explanation as to his thinking:

Frank has the ability to play in that role and it is good that he feels so well in that position and gives us that flexibility. Frank is one of the best players in the world and he has the flexibility to play in many positions: in a number eight position, a number 10 position or a holding position.

We have seen throughout his career that he has the ability so it is nothing new that we were trying today, and it does not mean that we are going to use it to the fullness. We are just happy to see that the players are able to play in various positions.

The 4-2-3-1 allowed Yossi Benayoun the central role behind Didier Drogba and the Israeli was voted Man of the Match with a commanding performance. At 7.0 he’d be an absolute steal but Chelsea look likely to invest in a midfield creator, lessening his Fantasy appeal.

Mick McCarthy’s Wolves continued their pre-season with a comfortable 2-0 win at Glasgow Celtic. Jamie O’Hara highlighted his dead-ball ability by curling home a free-kick for the opener and Big Mick admitted he’s close to his first-choice line-up, praising the centre-half partnership of Roger Johnson and Christophe Berra in particular.

Birmingham City continue to shed their players at an alarming rate following last season’s relegation. Midlands neighbours West Brom look set to be the latest beneficiaries of the club’s financial woes- Ben Foster has already been linked with a move to the Hawthorns but Liam Ridgewell is also reportedly set to join Roy Hodgson’s side and help boost a defence that conceded 71 goals last season.

Reports suggest Valencia midfielder Juan Mata has moved closer to a move to the Emirates, with representatives of the player flying into London yesterday for talks. If it transpires, the transfer would certainly move Cesc Fabregas closer to the Arsenal exit door and finally put an end to the years of speculation surrounding his possible return to Barcelona.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

wilshere: Good player but will not get you points
gervinho: i think he'll score plenty goals/assist but i'll only bring him in when rvp is injured or arsenal have good fixtures and i'll double up with rvp

Have a feeling Gervinho is being underated... hopefully! Was initially put off by him not being classed as a midfielder, but like the look of his timing of runs and finishing (based on 20mins pre season!).

Depends who else you have, basically. I have gone for Rooney+Gerv as opposed to RVP+? I have a gut feeling goals will be less RVP-centric this season (arsh looking less fat; gerv a finisher), whilst conversely think goals might be Roonpig- centric.

Have opted for wilshere, for now. He can only improve points-wise and factor in player exits. Keeping a spotlight on Ramsey though, because he can become more 'efficient' if holds done regular spot. (both good value this season i think)

I have both of the above to start with. Albrighton is on my radar also (today!).
I am prob biased with Wilshere... a lot depends on exits and BPs, and Ramsey vs Wilshere pitch positions if they both become regulars.
          Cheers.

A - Cashley is a sure starter and tbh he should probably have been able to convert more of his chances and assists than he did last year.

Wes Brown, Im not so sure of so check pre season games.

Luiz, rotation risk and will probably stack up the yellow cards and the odd red. Love his all or nothing attitude but he screws up big time now and again.

      A good risk.

Good 'noises' about him... Wenger has stated he can play across the front 3 and has the look of a smart, efficient goalscorer. I expect him to hit the ground running. Could be a good option to protect RVP during the course of a season also. There are some rumours of a big name striker to come in, so keep an eye on that also.

    Hi guys,

anyone with a opinion on the rotating goalkeepers strategy at 5.0/5.0 or just going with one of Hart/Cech/DeGea + bench fodder?

Last two seasons I have tried the infamous rotate okay goalies, but seem to still loose out against my minileaguers who just choose one top goalie and the cheapest playing alternative and role with it. I am considering De Vries and Hart atm. Thoughts? Preferably on this topic?

I think if you are going to rotate you need keepers who actually have a decent chance of a clean sheet. I don't see the point of using the cheapest playing GK who rotate if the teams they cOme from will leak goals no matter what.

I will be using Given and Begovic. Great home field rotation all year, plus both stoke and villa are strong defensively, especially at home.

This combo is 10million which is cheaper than 1 expensive option but only about .5 to 1 from a poor keeper rotation.

Though about the Hart + 4.0m keeper opition, but for 1m less, Given/Begovic is for me and I can wisely invest the 1m elsewhere.

Ibrahim Affelay is reported to be available to tottenham for 4m. I think that is ridiculously cheap. I was really impressed with him for the Dutch at the world cup. I don't know why teams such as arsenal who need some winger depth would chuck a sneaky 5'er on him.

ya, i wanted united to get him before the world cup - think he would have been much cheaper and more effective than young as he's younger, more skilled/creative.

Exactly the sort of player Chelsea could do with.

Who believes Moses is a legitmate option. My knowledge of him is minimal, with only one performance standing out were he ran the wing up and down all day, with great pace, and a eye for goal. Nzogbia now gone, and his spot looking pretty much nailed down, he could be a excellent 5mill pick.

    Thoughts? Legit? or still questionable?

Given his price and the opening fixtures I'd say he's legit.

all I know is that he walked that bloomin' desert for forty odd years so I guess a few runs up and down the wing of a football pitch is a piece of piss!

With Bolton now signing Reo Coker do you think that Pratley and Petrov will still get enough games.

Reo Coker could hardly get a game in a poor west ham midfield. I think he will be a sub format of the year. A team like Bolton have a couple of decent midfields in lee, Petrov, et al.

Goin for a pretty safe side
    Cech Ruddy
    Baines Kompany Warnock Simpson Orr
    VDV Barton Albrighton Taraabt Sinclair
    RVP Suarez Holt

My only risks are Taraabt, Sinclair and Holt.. who are all on penalties and the main men of their sides.. Defense is perfect for 3 at the back.. and the rest of my attack is proven premiership players.. what dya think?

Too much cash in def. I would have Rafael and Kompany as your starters and rotate the rest. I would downgrade Luiz to Enrique (if transferred) and use the extra cash to upgrade yaya to silva.

      B. Jose Enrique looks like he could be on the way out. I'd go for him when he does. But for now, Hughes looks a decent shout at 5.0.
