While we wait for Manchester City to confirm the Sergio Aguero transfer, our thoughts turn to yesterday’s friendlies amongst other matters, with Andres Villas-Boas experimental formation and subsequent use of Frank Lampard the major talking point. Here’s this morning’s Scout Scribbles:

Javier Hernandez looks set to be sidelined for around a fortnight, according to Sir Alex Ferguson. The Mexican suffered concussion after being hit by a stray ball in training and was kept overnight in hospital as a precautionary measure. The United boss explained:

We took him to the hospital, he had a scan, it was all clear. But he probably wouldn’t have been playing in a couple of weeks anyway because he’s just come back from his break after playing in the Gold Cup for Mexico. He wasn’t going to be involved in our team for two or three weeks.

While Hernandez watched on from his hospital bed, Dimitar Berbatov played a significant part in United’s 4-0 demolition of a MLS All-Stars XI that included David Beckham and Thierry Henry. The Bulgarian grabbed his side’s third in what was a comprehensive victory and sees the club continue their impressive pre-season form ahead of Saturday’s game with Barcelona.

Reports suggest David Moyes may have to start the season without his midfield playmaker Mikel Arteta. The Spaniard suffered a foot injury against Philadelphia Union in the club’s US tour last week and with subsequent severe bone bruising, will miss out on the upcoming friendlies against Birmingham and Werder Bremen. Moyes, however, is still hopeful the player will recover in time for the season kick-off in just over two weeks time.

Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Hong Kong champions Kitchee was most notable for Andres Villas-Boas starting formation. The new Blues boss is still weighing up his options but, intriguingly, started with Frank Lampard in a deep lying central midfield role as his side took to the field in a 4-2-3-1. Lampard vowed to continue getting forward, regardless:

I do like to get forward and this won’t be a role that will stop me getting into the box. As long as I’m never told not to stray beyond the half way line, I’ll be happy. I love getting into box, getting up and down the pitch.

I know I can do it now and, hopefully, I can do it for a few more years. I do have to look after myself. You look at Ryan Giggs and people like that, who hang around in their 30s, and they have to be disciplined about what they do.

Fantasy managers will be wary of investing in Lampard if this formation becomes the norm- at 12.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he’s perhaps too much of a dent in the budget for a deep-lying midfielder, regardless of penalty duties. With so much press attention focused on his chosen formation, however, Villas-Boas gave an explanation as to his thinking:

Frank has the ability to play in that role and it is good that he feels so well in that position and gives us that flexibility. Frank is one of the best players in the world and he has the flexibility to play in many positions: in a number eight position, a number 10 position or a holding position.

We have seen throughout his career that he has the ability so it is nothing new that we were trying today, and it does not mean that we are going to use it to the fullness. We are just happy to see that the players are able to play in various positions.

The 4-2-3-1 allowed Yossi Benayoun the central role behind Didier Drogba and the Israeli was voted Man of the Match with a commanding performance. At 7.0 he’d be an absolute steal but Chelsea look likely to invest in a midfield creator, lessening his Fantasy appeal.

Mick McCarthy’s Wolves continued their pre-season with a comfortable 2-0 win at Glasgow Celtic. Jamie O’Hara highlighted his dead-ball ability by curling home a free-kick for the opener and Big Mick admitted he’s close to his first-choice line-up, praising the centre-half partnership of Roger Johnson and Christophe Berra in particular.

Birmingham City continue to shed their players at an alarming rate following last season’s relegation. Midlands neighbours West Brom look set to be the latest beneficiaries of the club’s financial woes- Ben Foster has already been linked with a move to the Hawthorns but Liam Ridgewell is also reportedly set to join Roy Hodgson’s side and help boost a defence that conceded 71 goals last season.

Reports suggest Valencia midfielder Juan Mata has moved closer to a move to the Emirates, with representatives of the player flying into London yesterday for talks. If it transpires, the transfer would certainly move Cesc Fabregas closer to the Arsenal exit door and finally put an end to the years of speculation surrounding his possible return to Barcelona.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Agree with the two guys above. I'm currently playing around with Hoolahan in my team.

I just don't know if I fancy having Holt taking up one of my forward slots, so Hoolahan is a great 'in' for the Norwich points and may be good value for £.

    Given, Kenny
    Cole, Kompany, Bramble, Collins, Briggs
    Malouda, Barton, Sinclair, Tchoyi, Moses
    RVP, Bent, Suarez + £0

Any suggestions to this team?.... Aim to play 433 most weeks.

Defence is basically Cole, Kompany plus 2 £4.5s and a £4m so would welcome suggestions as to options to fill these defence slots.

Will assess Malouda/Benayoun situation after a couple of games but reckon much better plan to start with Malouda and trade down rather than start with Benayoun and struggle to raise cash to trade up.

    Cheers

Why not one £5.0 and two £4.0 instead, once the two £4.0 rotate well?
        Rotate Orr and Tate
Then you can have a SUN/FUL/STO as your 5.0 and only play for the easier home games and throw on whichever cheapie is at home for the others

Another way to do it is have a 5.0 and 4.0 that rotate well, such as O'Shea Simpson then a 4.0 cheapie to throw on whenever fixtures for both NEW and SUN look dodgey

Finally, one last thing If you've your heart set on Hughes or Roger Johnson, Norwich is a good place to look for cheapies that rotate well with fulham, or else FUL/WBA, then WOL/WBA and WOL/STK for RJ.
Don't know how many 4.0s you'll find in that lot, but if WBA get Foster (and Ridgewell), then cleanies will be more certain for them

      It's good I like it.

Not a huge fan of some of your midfield choices though. At least one player costing 6.5 will do you good considering it'll give you good options. Say you choose Taarabt and he gets injured. You can easily switch to Sessegnon or Etherington or someone like that. Downgrade Tchoyi and upgrade Barton.

I don't see why people complain so much about RMTs. If you don't like them, don't read them. Personally, they help me a lot in seeing which players are most popular and what the trends are. Some teams make me reconsider my own approach if they're particularly good.

Also, helping others with RMT makes you more attuned to the pros and weaknesses of certain teams which also helps you choose better players too. It's all give and take, which is what's so great about this place.

It's not really the fact that we don't like them, it's the fact that the sheer velocity of RMT's leads to us eventually reading the same team over and over again more or less. So it becomes somewhat generic

But I like the Sinclairs fixtures more. Adel has better first fixture IMO, which could lead to a bandwagon. Both on penalties right? I think Swansea will score more and are gonna be tougher to be beaten at home. Right? QPR struggled against Cesena.

On a second thought QPR could easily loose that first BOl game.

Hmmm... Leaning to Sinclair at the moment. Also former Chelsea lad.

I bet quite a few people are having this problem. Do I start with my favourite team or do I leave some money in the bank to respond to the revelations of the first weekend. Interested to hear thoughts on this:

    A) VDV, Silva, N'Zog, Taarabt, Dyer

    or

    B) VDV, Silva, Sessegnon, Taarabt, Dyer
+ 1 million in bank to turn VDV into Malouda or Sess into Benayoun/N'Zog

    Silva/VDV/Sessegnon/Moses/Albrighton
    Rooney/Carroll/Holt

£1m in the bank for any upgrades (VDV/Silva-Malouda, Carrol-Torres/Drogba etc)

ferguson must be just a way of making space for others as he's not exactly starter material, especially since pardew signed france. dyer looks to be the best 4.5 option which is why he's about and hoolahan did well in the championship

I'd rather have a Sunderland def instead of Alcaraz - rotates perfectly with Simpson, Bruce is a defensive manager (Birmingham and Wigan defs were good options when Bruce was at those clubs), Wigan hardly kept any clean sheets last season.

Bramble is also 4.5, so is Wes Brown.

i think he's a pretty big part in AVB's plan. i hardly think he's a rotation risk. and if lamps does play the deeper role, i wouldn't feel comfortable paying 12 mill for him

I would love to have Cahill for Toure but I don't have 1m. Everybody suggesting Malouda are forgetting that he is playing in the midfield this year. He is not considered as a striker from AVB. And this is from the guy who started with Malouda last year. This time is different.

Toure is early bandwagon IMO against Swa. That's 3p for CS and 2BP at least. I will take those 6p easily.

Not sure about doubling up on Villa defense but that isn't *'d.

Wigan will concede I think so stay clear of Alcaraz. As you have Simpson, go for a Sunderland DEF, they'll rotate nicely will Simpson, Bramble/Brown.

Midfield and Forwards are good. I would choose Rooney personally.

Is no-one tempted by Larsson at Sunderland? Noone is talking about him - is he injured or something? Presumably he's on set pieces?

He scored decently enough at birmingham and I'd expect him to do better in a more attacking side. 6.5 for a set piece taking midfielder who is proven in the prem looks good, no?

Duff, Barton & Larsson seem to be the proven budget options to me.
Benayoun/Anderson if you fancy a risk.
Sinclair and Hoolahanrahan from the promoted sides.

      Sessegnon is a better option.

Thanks for replying. Why do you say Sessegnon is a better option? He might play off the striker, and if he did well I'd bring him in. But if he plays a normal midfield position then is he really a better option to start the season with than the bloke on set pieces? He seems a bit too much of a punt for GW1.

    Malouda or VDV

Right now I love both, but I can't chose!

    Bramble, Nelsen, Cahill (Simpson, Wilkinson)
    Ephraim, VDV, Moses, Dempsey (Thomas)
    Rooney, RVP, Drogba

    what do you guys think?

Is it worth leaving my backline as weak as it is altho i think they are all clean sheet teams with the right fixtures.

Looks pretty solid to me. Rafael could be a rotation risk imo and malouda as well altho i think he will play fairly consistently. Although who knows with Chelsea tbh.
Got a plan to bring VDV in after the opening few fixtures?
