While we wait for Manchester City to confirm the Sergio Aguero transfer, our thoughts turn to yesterday’s friendlies amongst other matters, with Andres Villas-Boas experimental formation and subsequent use of Frank Lampard the major talking point. Here’s this morning’s Scout Scribbles:

Javier Hernandez looks set to be sidelined for around a fortnight, according to Sir Alex Ferguson. The Mexican suffered concussion after being hit by a stray ball in training and was kept overnight in hospital as a precautionary measure. The United boss explained:

We took him to the hospital, he had a scan, it was all clear. But he probably wouldn’t have been playing in a couple of weeks anyway because he’s just come back from his break after playing in the Gold Cup for Mexico. He wasn’t going to be involved in our team for two or three weeks.

While Hernandez watched on from his hospital bed, Dimitar Berbatov played a significant part in United’s 4-0 demolition of a MLS All-Stars XI that included David Beckham and Thierry Henry. The Bulgarian grabbed his side’s third in what was a comprehensive victory and sees the club continue their impressive pre-season form ahead of Saturday’s game with Barcelona.

Reports suggest David Moyes may have to start the season without his midfield playmaker Mikel Arteta. The Spaniard suffered a foot injury against Philadelphia Union in the club’s US tour last week and with subsequent severe bone bruising, will miss out on the upcoming friendlies against Birmingham and Werder Bremen. Moyes, however, is still hopeful the player will recover in time for the season kick-off in just over two weeks time.

Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Hong Kong champions Kitchee was most notable for Andres Villas-Boas starting formation. The new Blues boss is still weighing up his options but, intriguingly, started with Frank Lampard in a deep lying central midfield role as his side took to the field in a 4-2-3-1. Lampard vowed to continue getting forward, regardless:

I do like to get forward and this won’t be a role that will stop me getting into the box. As long as I’m never told not to stray beyond the half way line, I’ll be happy. I love getting into box, getting up and down the pitch.

I know I can do it now and, hopefully, I can do it for a few more years. I do have to look after myself. You look at Ryan Giggs and people like that, who hang around in their 30s, and they have to be disciplined about what they do.

Fantasy managers will be wary of investing in Lampard if this formation becomes the norm- at 12.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he’s perhaps too much of a dent in the budget for a deep-lying midfielder, regardless of penalty duties. With so much press attention focused on his chosen formation, however, Villas-Boas gave an explanation as to his thinking:

Frank has the ability to play in that role and it is good that he feels so well in that position and gives us that flexibility. Frank is one of the best players in the world and he has the flexibility to play in many positions: in a number eight position, a number 10 position or a holding position.

We have seen throughout his career that he has the ability so it is nothing new that we were trying today, and it does not mean that we are going to use it to the fullness. We are just happy to see that the players are able to play in various positions.

The 4-2-3-1 allowed Yossi Benayoun the central role behind Didier Drogba and the Israeli was voted Man of the Match with a commanding performance. At 7.0 he’d be an absolute steal but Chelsea look likely to invest in a midfield creator, lessening his Fantasy appeal.

Mick McCarthy’s Wolves continued their pre-season with a comfortable 2-0 win at Glasgow Celtic. Jamie O’Hara highlighted his dead-ball ability by curling home a free-kick for the opener and Big Mick admitted he’s close to his first-choice line-up, praising the centre-half partnership of Roger Johnson and Christophe Berra in particular.

Birmingham City continue to shed their players at an alarming rate following last season’s relegation. Midlands neighbours West Brom look set to be the latest beneficiaries of the club’s financial woes- Ben Foster has already been linked with a move to the Hawthorns but Liam Ridgewell is also reportedly set to join Roy Hodgson’s side and help boost a defence that conceded 71 goals last season.

Reports suggest Valencia midfielder Juan Mata has moved closer to a move to the Emirates, with representatives of the player flying into London yesterday for talks. If it transpires, the transfer would certainly move Cesc Fabregas closer to the Arsenal exit door and finally put an end to the years of speculation surrounding his possible return to Barcelona.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Please could you rip this team to bits...

    Given / Ruddy
    Cole / Clichy / Kompany / Orr / Simpson
    Taarabt / NZogbia / Barton / Yaya / Sinclair
    Bent / Zamora / Rooney

Doubled up on City defenders as think they'll pick up plenty of cleanies. Clicky MAY be prone to a rest due to Kolarov, but reckon he should start most games. Cole, Clichy, Kompany will be my 3 selections with Orr or Simpson there to warm the bench most/all weeks.

Rooney could be swapped for RVP I'm not sure on that one yet, but all 3 will play pretty much all games leaving a pick of 4 from the midfield 5.

for defence I'm going for two mid to expensive regulars (A Cole plus Kompany) backed by pone of three rotating cheapies.

In the 4m-5m region which are the best three to go for?

Depends how much total you want to spend on those 3. I've gone with three 4 million defenders (Orr, Simpson and Wilkinson.)

Other than that I'd look at Sunderland and Fulham defenders. Fulham had 14 clean sheets and Sunderland had 13. Manchester United and Chelsea had 15 last season and Liverpool had 14 if you want to compare.

Bardsley, Bramble, Hughes are all good picks I think.

I think with three 4m you will come a cropper. that's three gambles. Simpson looks the only assured pts getter for that price.

i'm happy to splash out the extra .5 here and there. I'd advise you to do the same.

I think by the start of the season I'll chicken out of the three 4m defenders tbh.

Probably will go with Bramble incase you were wondering.

Been looking at exactly the same Jonty, and that's what I've got at the moment.

If you want to save cash, you can replace Fulham with QPR, but there's an obvious risk there. I think WBA actually rotate better with SUN than NEW, but they don't have anyone as cheap as Simpson.

I'm going to need to see some evidence of Orr before I spend my hard earned 4m on him. There was a QPR fan on here saying that he was total pants and would be found out sharpish.

I like the idea of cheap ones from Wolves/Fulham/ Sunderland and Newcastle. Newcastle at home cannot be ignored. ...cheers chaps and chapesses I think I'm settled on the four teams to pick from.

Now, let's have a look at that Wolves - Sunderland - Fulahm Newcastle rotation again.

WSo say week 8 where New have Spurs at home is more likely of a CS than wolves with West Brom away? Its both the opposition and the home factor. No point in having good home fixtures if they're against top 6 sides.

I'm with doosra here. Newcastle at home to spurs is more likely to get a clean sheet than wolves away to west brom. Odemwingie will make mince meat of the wolves defence at least once. But both are not great shouts....that is why Wolves and Newcastle is probably a bad combo.

Fair enough. The ticker says otherwise (only just mind you). I was chatting about rotating Wolves and Fulham but would have played away fixtures in there. I'll factor in Simpson and see what it comes out with.

agree about home matches. Wolves will very likely concede away no matter who they are against. At home they could be a fortress. Same with Newcastle...difference between home and away is immense. Having 40,000 Geordies singing you on tends to have a positive effect on Newcastle players.

From looking at Chelsea's preseason it looks like either Bosingwa or Ferreira have being playing RB. I'm thinking with their easy enough fixtures at the start that AVB might go with Bosingwa to give them a bit more attacking threat.

But I thought the percentage of ownership had an affect on price changes - if 500 people transfer out Rooney it probably won't affect his price, whereas the same number of transfers out for a player with extremely low ownership could cause a price drop. Or have I got that wrong?

Once LOCKDOWN!! (dramatic, eh?) on the 13th is over (about midday) then every transfer will count towards price rises/falls. When the number of transfers in/out for each player reaches a certain threshold, their price will change. Expect to see the first price rise/fall on the following Wednesday or Thursday.

    Kenny
    Dunne Kompany Cole
    Moses Ireland Yaya malouda
    Nothroyd Rooney Suarez

    Subs:
    O'hara Simpson bramble

I think ireland will have a big roll to play for villa this season

Cole or Baines to start season? With Everton's dreadful starts and Chelsea's history of strong starts, it has to be Cole right?

Was sorely tempted to have both but I feel I only have one given other priorities.

My strategy was Cole, Baines, Kompany and 2 £4.0ers who'll never play.

But then I put my sensible hat on and realised you always end up needing your sub defenders. Oh, and realised I wanted a killer front 3 so Baines or Cole has to be the choice.

Have the same problem, had baines in for ages but just changed to Cole. I think cole is best because Chelsea more likely to keep clean sheets early and he may get assists while baines has tottenham(who always seem to score) + I think it may take him awhile to find form. Cole is a bit cheaper as well so you can upgrade elsewhere

You answered it in your question. "Torres or Drogba". The fact we don't know which of them will start regularly, suggests it may be wiser to invest in their midfield or defence.

With regards to Jonty's Cole, Kompany plus three rotating I'm doing exactly that. Currently the three rotating are Givet (£4.5M), Simpson (£4.0M) & Elokobi (£4.5M). There's not much assist or goal potential there I admit, but they do rotate pretty decently I think, and are dirt cheap.

      GW 1: WOL (Givet)
      GW 2: FUL (Elokobi)
      GW 3: FUL (Simpson)
      GW 4: qpr (Simpson)/TOT (Elokobi)
      GW 5: QPR (Elokobi)
      GW 6: BLA (Simpson)
      GW 7: NEW (Elokobi)
      GW 8: wba (Elokobi)/qpr (Givet)
      GW 9: WIG (Simpson)/SWA (Elokobi)
      GW10: nor (Givet)
      GW11: WIG (Elokobi)

If I could get 5/6 clean sheets from that lot I'd take that, and I think it's well within reason to expect something along those lines. GW12 is when I plan to WC. Here's hoping I can hold off that long.

    RVP - Bent - Holt

    or

    Benayoun - Nzog - Taarabt - Sinclair - Moses

Which is better? First option I've had for ages and one weakness is no Chelsea attacking coverage. Second option I get that IF Benayoun plays for loss of Downing.

Sinclair would be the gamble choice I would say. Has the potential to score 10-15 goals and 10 assists. But could also strike out and not score many and then be in and out of the team.

Barton is more of a solid choice, you know what you will get. Most likely the odd pen and some assists & bonus. Steady scoring

Your defence is weak in Oshea and Alcaraz..... Midfield is too strong downgrade ur sub midfielder and get funds to improve defence

Also - Keane will only be a great pick if Defoe actually moves to Newcastle

otherwise imagine if one of your strikers is injured and keane is not playing... you will be left with kelly (might not play) that leaves delap or enrique depending on your formation and only a possible 2 points at best...

Bothroyd is the QPR forward. Who said anything about rotating goalkeepers?

You really think think anyone will spend the time to analize +/- of 8 teams this far from the start of the season?
