Stoke joined Fulham in gaining some competitive action last night as Tony Pulis’ side kicked off their own Europa Cup adventure with a 1-0 win at the Britannia. Elsewhere, Sir Alex Ferguson dismissed claims of a long-term head injury to Javier Hernandez, scuppering suggestions made by Little Pea’s old club doctor that the player has suffered similar issues with concussion before. Here’s your morning Scout Scribbles:

With Javier Hernandez currently sidelined for Man United due to concussion, confusion surrounds the player’s condition. Rafael Ortega, doctor at Chivas de Guadalajara, told ESPN Sports Radio club that, as a teenager, Hernandez was sent for tests following a bout of severe migraine attacks:

I remember in his time as a youth player at Chivas that he suffered from acute migraines – originally, it manifested itself as a headache. Afterwards, the symptoms disappeared. We had some studies done on him, but that was six years ago and he has done well since. I don’t know if there is a connection between the two situations. I don’t know if this can affect him in the future.

Sir Alex Ferguson has moved swiftly to deny Ortega’s claims, however, explaining the situation in a little more detail:

This is a straightforward concussion. He was hit on the top of the head with the ball in the early evening. When he was back at the hotel taking his meal he felt sick and he was sick. He had headaches, so we removed him to the hospital where he stayed in overnight.

They did the MRI scans and that was all clear and they released him on Wednesday. Concussion is something that you don’t want to happen, but usually time heals and we’ll give ‘Chicharito’ plenty of time. I’ll only bring him back when the doctor tells me I can.”

Fergie also had plenty to say on new signing Phil Jones. The player was fielded at right-back in Wednesday’s 4-0 win over the MLS All-Stars and it’s clear Jones’ new boss sees him as one of the most adaptable member of his Man United squad already. This may bode well for Jones next season- with his manager lauding his versatility, it’s possible he’ll get more starts than anticipated in his debut campaign, offering the United boss cover in a number of positions.

Fulham’s Matthew Briggs continues to blink on our Fantasy radars. Briggs was given yet another start by Martin Jol for Fulham last night as the club continued their Europa League qualifying campaign, but played, this time, in left midfield. A left-back by trade, Briggs is a 4.0 defender in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and has been getting plenty game time so far under the new boss. Clint Dempsey’s return next week will perhaps give a better indication as to how Jol views matters- the American has been on holiday due to his international exertions with the US this summer.

Stoke’s first foray into Europe for thirty-seven years saw the club get off to a winning start. The 1-0 win over Hajduk Split saw Jonathan Walters grab the game’s only goal and once again remind us of his potential as an out-of-position player this upcoming season. Walters was fielded mostly as a forward by Tony Pulis last term but has, once again, been classified as a midfielder by FPL, and a relatively cheap one (6.0) at that. Judging by last night’s line-up, Walters looks set to continue up front next season, partnering Kenwyne Jones in Pulis’ standard 4-4-2 and may well prove to be a real Fantasy bargain in 2011/12.

Following his side’s goalless draw at Southend last night, Paul Lambert confirmed both Elliott Ward and James Vaughan will miss the start of next season. Lambert was particularly impressed by debutant Kyle Naughton- the on-loan Tottenham full-back should be an integral member of the Canaries first XI in the upcoming campaign but priced at 4.5, is the costliest Norwich defender available, alongside fellow loan signing Ritchie De Laet.

Roberto Martinez continues to lavish praise on Victor Moses. Having been given a starting role in light of Charles N’Zogbia’s imminent move to Aston Villa, the youngster has now scored three times in pre-season and looks set to become a key figure for Wigan next season in his manager’s eyes.

He’s a special talent. Charlie has left a big hole in our team but that vacancy is a big opportunity for Victor and maybe a couple of other players to step up. Victor is a different kind of player to Charlie but has the same quality that sets players like that apart from the rest.’

Priced at a mere 5.0 in FPL, Fantasy managers are eyeing Moses up with intent right now, particularly given the kind start to the season that sees the club play all three promoted sides in their first three games (NOR, swa, QPR).

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Barton and N'Zogbia - not sold on QPR at all yet, easy starting fixtures but no money spent as they want to sell tehm club which is liely to cause reasults to go south, not one big signing all summer leaves me to think they'll struggle. In shorrt you're better starting with players you know and just keeping an eye on players like Tarrbt, if he starts procuding then by all means stick him in.

Also consider Mosses over N'zobia and upgrade your Forward to Bent.

If Taarabat doesn't score in the opening fixtures, he's not going to score later. I'm going to have him as my one wildcard, if it pays off I'll be ahead of the curve, if not - hello Joey Barton when your fixtures come right.

      I like all three personally...

Barton - set pieces are his at newcastle - plenty of assists!

N'Zogbia - Always a good performer for Wigan - now playing with a better striker will only make his assists go up

Taarabt - a wild card, its a 6.5 gamble - but QPR's fixtures are kind... Worth a punt in my eyes.

For start of the season (on games alone) - N'Zogbia and Taarabt

Ideally I would prefer to have two big hitters in midfield. Right now I only have one - the marauding Malouda (who I'm not even 100% sold on).

This year more than any other it seems as if there is a real dearth of value in the top bracket (9m plus) of midfielders:
Fabregas - Head and heart elsewhere. Could be leaving. Tough opening fixtures.
Lampard - Overpriced? Deeper role? Past his peak?
Gerrard - Overpriced? Injury prone. Past his peak?
Malouda - Not guaranteed starter. Lots of competition in his position.
Kuyt - Overpriced? Less question marks than others, perhaps only how he will fit in when Suarez and Carroll become regular front two. No set pieces when Gerrard is in the side.
Nani - Not guaranteed starter. Lots of competition in his position.
Young - Not guaranteed starter. Lots of competition in his position.
Van Der Vaart - Injury prone. Very tough opening fixtures.
Nasri - Head elsewhere. Could be leaving. Tough opening fixtures.
Silva - Struggles to score. Can he continue his form from the second half of last season? Part of a big squad, may be rotated due to UCL. Yaya Toure cheaper 'in' to City midfield.
Arshavin - Not guaranteed starter. Lots of competition in his position. Tough opening fixtures.
Walcott - Beyond injury prone. Tough opening fixtures.
Cahill - Form dropped off in the second half of last season. No set pieces.
Adam - Overpriced? Lots of competition in his position. No set pieces due to Gerrard/Kuyt.

By my logic it seems Kuyt, Silva, VDV and Cahill are the safest options if you're looking for big guns.

Right now that is exactly what I have, one big gun and 4 value players, but it doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence.

You end up taking gambles on promoted players like Taarabt, Sinclair, Hoolahan, Dyer etc. And if you don't feel like gambling then you have to settle for the likes of Barton and Sessegnon.

Doesn't really strike fear into the opposition does it?

What bands have you ever seen booed offstage? My only one is Bis supporting the Foo Fighters.

I really hated them, and in actuallity, it was me and two friends doing most of the heckling.

I was very pleased when the guitarist trashed his axe and went off stage in a huff.

Smashing Pumpkins, Reading Festival, 1991 (I think)....they were booed relentless during an appallingly bad natured set at the end of their tour. They kept going though despite the boos but eventually called a halt and just walked off...I assume early..but may have only meant to be a short set.

DE Jong? Not sure about the gkeepers. Going to be potential minus pts there when they visit the big guns.

De Jong is 5.0, in the Top Hundred EA, and gives me space to look at the promoted onanists, and laugh at Wigan's midfield.

The goalkeepers rotate perfectly, and Moreira is ex Benfica, and has played at a reasonable level in Europe.

a lot of the thinking on here seems to be a cheap goalie combo, however I was looking at cech myself as he is cheaper than Cashley (who I currently have) but he picked up 8 more points last season and is .5 cheaper. worth thinking about., I also think that Chelsea will be a lot tighter at the back this year because of AVB, Portos' defensive record last year was pretty immense

i'm pondering just now to be honest, still a bit of time to go so nothing in concrete. the thing is if you go cech he has slightly less owners (currently 7.1%) whereas Cashley (12.8%) so if cashley doesn't score too many and doesn't assist well there's a bit of a chelsea differential so to speak due to cech saves etc, they are both pretty much nailed on starters but to me i'm seeing more benefit in Cech for the money. I.m not so sure AVB will be as gung ho going forward so maybe less in the way of extra points for Cashley

basically, if you buy people who are assured starts, and who are priced reasonably, you'll avoid drops.

Worst case scenario: You buy a cheap defender who doesn't get in the team. Everyone else sells him, and you end up with even less money to replace him.

Other reasons for people selling a player are underperformance or injury (usually big hitters, as people can't afford to leave big money on the bench).

If you buy players who are in form, others will buy them and their price will rise.

I only generally feel comfortable with around 106m, it basically lets you upgrade from a weak mid into a strong one, or two weaks to 2 average.

      RB: Rafael, Fabio, Smalling

    Quick question on defence guys.

Most weeks you will only be looking to play 3 at the back. As such you have chosen two reasonably higher priced defenders with good fixtures who you plan to field week-in week-out.

For slots 3 and 4 you have picked two cheap defenders whose fixtures rotate well so they can be your 3rd defender on any given gameweek.

Now you only have slot 5 to fill. This person is surplus to requirements and will only be filling in when other defenders are injured/suspended and there are more pressing issues in your team. Therefore pick as cheap a player as possible, you can even afford to take a punt on a defender who is a bit risky and perhaps not a guaranteed starter. If it comes off you will have beat the pack to an FPL bargain, if not you can have them 3rd sub every week until you can quietly shuffle them out on a quiter gameweek (or wildcard).

This seems like a basic but logical plan. Do you agree?

If so, feel free to use this as the idiot's guide to choosing a defence.

      It's the exact plan i've gone for I.T. 2 Big defenders, 2 rotatable's and 1 4m bargain basement defender.

I think it will work out well this season. 1 Big defender isn't enough and 3 is overkill i think. This is the perfect balance

        Indeed Gigging Order.

It works best in defence. If you do go with it there it basically rules out the possibility of doing something similar in midfield-attack.

The reason being is that if you plan on playing 3 at the back most weeks, you will always have to play a 5-2 or 4-3 in Midfield-Attack. You therefore need strong options in all those positions.

Theoretically you could pick 3 top strikers to play week-in week-out and then, in slots 4 and 5 of midfield, pick two mids who rotate well.

I agree - that's why, goal keepers apart, I'm eschewing promoted players and Wigan. I may have to make an exception, though ...

Very similar to one of my earlier incarnations. I like it but there are a couple of not-guaranteed starters. That would be my only criticism. If they all play, it's very good.

Who do you see as non-guarenteed starters?

Then how about Rafael and Luiz to O'shea and Terry?

Have you seen him play? Except on Youtube videos of course. He's the most guaranteed flop we'll ever buy, we have benayoun already who can play that role, Pastore starts seasons well for Palermo but fades when everyone gets fit, we dont need him and 40 mill would be a waste, it would be much better going on a right back and right winger, I hope AVB convinces Roman to leave him so he goes to PSG, I'm unhappy because buying him would be a bad move, I think Roman has his mind set on him so if Chelsea dont sign him I think its a sign that AVB has more control than some previous managers.
