The departure of Charles N’Zogbia may have left a huge void within Wigan’s squad but in Victor Moses the club may well have a natural replacement. Certainly that’s the opinion of Latics boss Roberto Martinez who has wasted no time in talking up the abilities of the 20-year-old as he looks to reassure the Wigan faithful ahead of what seems likely to be another turbulent season at the DW Stadium.

Moses has already done his best to live up to the billing; three goals in pre-season, including an eye-catching brace to cap an impressive showing against Al Ahli in Austria on Wednesday has added fuel to the fire. Fantasy managers are now on alert and with Moses classified as a budget midfield option across many of the games, it’s clear that the former Crystal Palace starlet warrants our attention.

While nothing is certain with just over a fortnight to go before the kick-off, it’s clear that Moses is positioning himself to make his mark. Martinez has set the scene, lavishing praise on his £2.5m capture in the light of recent pre-season performances; the Wigan boss has few doubts that, in Moses, he has a player capable of providing the kind of individual attacking verve so often delivered by N’Zogbia…

“He’s a special talent…It’s a real shock to any player to move up to the Premier League, but since he’s been here he’s added maturity and experience to his undoubted ability…Charlie [N’Zogbia] has left a big hole in our team but that vacancy is a big opportunity for Victor and maybe a couple of other players to step up…Victor is a different kind of player to Charlie but has the same quality that sets players like that apart from the rest.”

Opportunity knocks for Moses then, but can he grasp it and provide the inspiration for Wigan and rich returns for Fantasy investors?

Key Factors

  • Moses is available as a budget option. Priced at just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game with largely defensive players such as Cheik Tiote, Lucas and Nigel De Jong in the same bracket; there’s little doubt that Moses is an attractive Fantasy proposition amongst that kind of company.

  • Wigan’s fixtures provide ample opportunity for Moses to raise his profile and FPL value. Incredibly, Martinez’s side face all three promoted sides in their first three Gameweeks. As they found with Blackpool last season (losing 0-4 on the opening day), that can be a double-edged sword but Wigan will be expected to craft opportunities in all three matches, giving Moses the chance for returns.

  • The pre-season has confirmed that Moses is growing in stature. N’Zogbia’s departure has opened the way for a definite starting role and increased responsibility and, on the evidence so far, Moses is relishing the prospect.

  • While Moses has, to this point, failed to make an impact in terms of raw statistics and Fantasy output, that can be attributed to the fact that his opportunities have been severely limited. Despite making 21 league appearances last season, Moses was given just 8 starts; he was subbed in every one of those games, often just after the hour-mark.

  • Right now Wigan’s attacking options look limited. Just as N’Zogbia’s ball carrying abilities and direct style of play had him stand out within Wigan’s lineup, Moses has shown similar talents that could see him emerge as the Latics’ key threat to opponents. It’s clear from analysis of last season’s performance statistics that Moses will need to raise his game – to make a significant step up in his end product. Renewed confidence from a prolonged run in the side could provide the impetus for that. A risk then, but at his budget Fantasy valuation, certainly a tempting one.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Luiz/Rafael - rotation risks
Downing - risk at 8.5 (Dempsey is a better call at that value factoring in fixtures)
Cahill - poor fixtures for Everton at start
Suarez - may miss first few fixtures

    Current line-up:
    Al'Habsi (Given)
    Kompany/Dunne/de Laet (O'Shea/Simpson)
    van der Vaart/Moses/Taarabt/N'Zogbia (Sinclair)

I'm not to worried about the Dunne/Given double act - McLeish should keep them quite solid at the back (think of it as the Foster/Johnson of last season)

de Laet is ex-United youth defender playing for Norwich (rotates well with the Sun/New rotation - fills in the blanks).

Enlighten me here but everyone goes on about you not picking certain players because of their fixtures but everyone has to play each other twice regardless of who they are like people not picking rvp too early im more worried about him rupturing his ligament on a blade of grass or am i overlooking something? Surely rotation and injury and cup runs are more important?

So you try and transfer out shit defenders before they meet big clubs? Just start with reliable defenders that dont piss points down the drain? Unless you can afford 3 City defenders who play every game its not possible to keep clean sheets or am i just thick?

You try and get players in that have a good run of fixtures yes. Of course this isn't the only factor to make your decisions on, but you have to take it into consideration.

You're making it sound like your first 15 is your 15 for the whole season

You have to work with your budget, which means buying players from poorer clubs and timing it for when they have 'easy' fixtures - and trading them out when fixtures toughen up.

There's more points to be gained using free trades on attackers so imo key to a good start is getting the defence right so you won't need to touch it.
Make sure the defenders fixtures rotate well enough that for the 1st 10 weeks or so you will have a good backline every week without the need for trades. Can't see myself not wildcarding in 1st 10 weeks so I wouldn't look further ahead than that.

Totally agree with champ start with your strongest defence you can its easier to swap mid and strikers far more options you will only ever have a handful of defenders in mind as we can see by the cookie cutter teams Kompany Baines Hughes Cole in nearly everyside including mine

You can substitute players later on (why I'm avoiding Everton/Baines for the first few weeks before bringing them in).

The game isn't stagnant, so it matters when you have players (purple patches and all)

Also, van Persie is fixture proof for me, so he's in until he gets injured for me.

    Al-Habsi Given
    Skrtel Hughes Kompany O'Shea Distin
    Barton O'Hara N'Zogbia Nasri Benayoun
    Rodallega Rooney Zamora
1.5 in the bank to sub Rodallega for Odemwingie GW4,
please just say nice things or I'm going to kill myself...
Also, yes I'll keep an eye on whether Benayoun is a starter or not, I was thinking of subbing Given for Foster once he's put in, Nasri I'm hoping gets Cesc's role once he leaves, I'm undecided as to whether O'Shea or Bardsley is a better choice and O'Hara I think will have a good season for Wolves.
This team will, no doubt, be changed ten times in the next fortnight.

      Looks great.

You have plenty of coverage if Benayoun does get the nod.

I'm with you on the Al Habsi/Given rotation and Rodallega/Odem switch.

sergio busquets is the most disgusting player currently in football. i say in football, i cant comment on him as a person.

he should be banned for a few matches for being a cheat, then see if he continues. if he's constantly that injured then just put him down ffs

    Alcaraz Distin Kompany (O'Shea, Simpson)
    Malouda Silva Yaya N'Zogs (Ferguson)
    Bent Rodallega Bent

2.5m in the bank for Lamps in GW2.

Very quick quiz: in an interview today, which manager has this to say about his coaching abilities?

"I still feel like I can walk into any club, anywhere, any time and deliver. It's a bit like a CEO, isn't it? You can take up a position in any industry and if you're a good CEO, you can make that company profitable. You put me in a football environment anywhere in the world and I can deliver the module. I can modify the module for the particular culture and the way of playing."

Yup. It's Sam Allardyce, in response to a question about whether he still thinks he could walk into Real Madrid or Inter and win trophies. Will he ever learn?

Man Utd doing infinitely better than last May.

So all they have to do, is make sure that Messi and Xavi don't manage to get inside the stadium.
