The departure of Charles N’Zogbia may have left a huge void within Wigan’s squad but in Victor Moses the club may well have a natural replacement. Certainly that’s the opinion of Latics boss Roberto Martinez who has wasted no time in talking up the abilities of the 20-year-old as he looks to reassure the Wigan faithful ahead of what seems likely to be another turbulent season at the DW Stadium.

Moses has already done his best to live up to the billing; three goals in pre-season, including an eye-catching brace to cap an impressive showing against Al Ahli in Austria on Wednesday has added fuel to the fire. Fantasy managers are now on alert and with Moses classified as a budget midfield option across many of the games, it’s clear that the former Crystal Palace starlet warrants our attention.

While nothing is certain with just over a fortnight to go before the kick-off, it’s clear that Moses is positioning himself to make his mark. Martinez has set the scene, lavishing praise on his £2.5m capture in the light of recent pre-season performances; the Wigan boss has few doubts that, in Moses, he has a player capable of providing the kind of individual attacking verve so often delivered by N’Zogbia…

“He’s a special talent…It’s a real shock to any player to move up to the Premier League, but since he’s been here he’s added maturity and experience to his undoubted ability…Charlie [N’Zogbia] has left a big hole in our team but that vacancy is a big opportunity for Victor and maybe a couple of other players to step up…Victor is a different kind of player to Charlie but has the same quality that sets players like that apart from the rest.”

Opportunity knocks for Moses then, but can he grasp it and provide the inspiration for Wigan and rich returns for Fantasy investors?

Key Factors

  • Moses is available as a budget option. Priced at just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game with largely defensive players such as Cheik Tiote, Lucas and Nigel De Jong in the same bracket; there’s little doubt that Moses is an attractive Fantasy proposition amongst that kind of company.

  • Wigan’s fixtures provide ample opportunity for Moses to raise his profile and FPL value. Incredibly, Martinez’s side face all three promoted sides in their first three Gameweeks. As they found with Blackpool last season (losing 0-4 on the opening day), that can be a double-edged sword but Wigan will be expected to craft opportunities in all three matches, giving Moses the chance for returns.

  • The pre-season has confirmed that Moses is growing in stature. N’Zogbia’s departure has opened the way for a definite starting role and increased responsibility and, on the evidence so far, Moses is relishing the prospect.

  • While Moses has, to this point, failed to make an impact in terms of raw statistics and Fantasy output, that can be attributed to the fact that his opportunities have been severely limited. Despite making 21 league appearances last season, Moses was given just 8 starts; he was subbed in every one of those games, often just after the hour-mark.

  • Right now Wigan’s attacking options look limited. Just as N’Zogbia’s ball carrying abilities and direct style of play had him stand out within Wigan’s lineup, Moses has shown similar talents that could see him emerge as the Latics’ key threat to opponents. It’s clear from analysis of last season’s performance statistics that Moses will need to raise his game – to make a significant step up in his end product. Renewed confidence from a prolonged run in the side could provide the impetus for that. A risk then, but at his budget Fantasy valuation, certainly a tempting one.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

        Looking at the Arsenal tab.

So we have Tot in row 2.

Then it goes Tot, Ars, Tot, Ars etc

So its showing me which of those would have a home game?

Red means both are away, and I assume it just shows the one team if they are home? (team whose tab I'm looking at)

    Cech/Al Habsi
    Alcaraz/Kompany/Baines/Samba/Simpson
    Sessegnon/Moses/Taarabt/Silva/Tiote
    Zamora/Rooney/Suarez

Only question mark is Suarez first few games.

Al'Habsi is a waste if you have Cech, save 0.5 by taking Ruddy/Moreira

Alcaraz - he of an almight 7 clean sheets last season? No thanks.
      Baines - rubbish opening fixtures
Samba - Bardsley/O'Shea, cheaper and play for a better team

Not one of your midfielders is bankable - i.e. you're riding on many badwagons there and could get burnt on all 5. (I'm including Silva here, doesn't get enough goals or assists to justify 9.5)

Pretty good! Only thing I question is your D... I don't like De Laet since Norwich will give up a tonne of goals. I like Dunne but I think Warnock will do better for .5 less.

Also, I think N'Zogbia's value will drop dramatically if he doesn't do well right off the bat.

              Will Warnock start for sure?

de Laet rotates well with the Sun/New combo (there are 1 or 2 gws where they are both screwed, and Norwich fills the gap best - e.g. GW1) - I could look around for something else there.

N'Zogbia is a bit of a thorn in my spine at the moment, I both want and don't want him and I keep getting swayed. My gut says no, but I can't think who else at that price (Albrighton?)

          QPR - good fixture
bla - are solid at home
AVL - depends on how McLeish plays, but I'm backing them to score in most games
          WIG - good fixture
mcy, LIV, che, ful, MUN - call me when that run is done...

That's 2/3 good games in the first 6 weeks, then 5 stinkers - for an 8.0 defender?

I haven't been around, so sorry if this has been hashed out already - but what's up with all of the love for Given? Makes no sense to me to spend 5.0 for a keeper with a 68% save ratio over his past 4 active seasons, who's playing behind a defense that was joint 14th last year and kept only 7 CS, and on a team that's in a bit of turmoil. Seems like there are several GK options at 5.0 and even 4.5 that will outscore Given.

Think he'll be loaned out again or even sold this summer?

For those not wathing these United-games: Young should be nowhere near a wing spot as long as Nani and Valencia are fit. Going for him from the start would be a massive punt imho.

          Not at all.

Especially pre-Roonpig's transfer Saga, when they had a bunch of kids that might be good,Ben Foster was the next #1,Vidic was rubbish, and they were very reliant on dinosaurs like Scholes and Giggs and Rio.

I still think Chelsea is more talented, but they are paper thin in every position.

United had kids, but couldn't start any of them... Their starting 11 was not very good and Ronaldo did well to carry them.

They weren't very deep, and hence desperate to keep Ronaldo. Now, it's safe to say that they have better youth and depth than Chelsea

love it. 15 of the most secure starters possible. penalty takers, balance. the only one thing i'd ask is are you happy having kenny and orr? it probably isn't a big deal as you can easily bench both a lot of the time.

      have a nice holiday

I have both atm, but before I had RvP, I feel Arsenal have the potential to put big scores (bigger than United) and RvP will generally be scoring much bigger than Rooney in those moments.

GW1: RvP by an extra goal (so 4pts)
                  GW2: about tied
GW3: Rooney possibly an extra assist (something like 2-1 with Rooney involved in both Utd goals, and RvP involved in the Arse goal)

It's close, no doubt - but I think RvP has potential to massively outperform in GW1.

I hate any players who dive, Nani does my head in. But when you're as good as Barca I don't see the point. They were still play acting when they were 2-1 and 3-1 up in the CL final. That was mainly Busquets though.

Rotation risk I guess, although his spot shouldn't be in too much peril if Young is his main challenger. Nani should be nailed on from the form he is showing now. But Park might also play LW like the end of last season, so I'd wait for UTDs fixtures to get better while seeing who the first choices are.
