The departure of Charles N’Zogbia may have left a huge void within Wigan’s squad but in Victor Moses the club may well have a natural replacement. Certainly that’s the opinion of Latics boss Roberto Martinez who has wasted no time in talking up the abilities of the 20-year-old as he looks to reassure the Wigan faithful ahead of what seems likely to be another turbulent season at the DW Stadium.

Moses has already done his best to live up to the billing; three goals in pre-season, including an eye-catching brace to cap an impressive showing against Al Ahli in Austria on Wednesday has added fuel to the fire. Fantasy managers are now on alert and with Moses classified as a budget midfield option across many of the games, it’s clear that the former Crystal Palace starlet warrants our attention.

While nothing is certain with just over a fortnight to go before the kick-off, it’s clear that Moses is positioning himself to make his mark. Martinez has set the scene, lavishing praise on his £2.5m capture in the light of recent pre-season performances; the Wigan boss has few doubts that, in Moses, he has a player capable of providing the kind of individual attacking verve so often delivered by N’Zogbia…

“He’s a special talent…It’s a real shock to any player to move up to the Premier League, but since he’s been here he’s added maturity and experience to his undoubted ability…Charlie [N’Zogbia] has left a big hole in our team but that vacancy is a big opportunity for Victor and maybe a couple of other players to step up…Victor is a different kind of player to Charlie but has the same quality that sets players like that apart from the rest.”

Opportunity knocks for Moses then, but can he grasp it and provide the inspiration for Wigan and rich returns for Fantasy investors?

Key Factors

  • Moses is available as a budget option. Priced at just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game with largely defensive players such as Cheik Tiote, Lucas and Nigel De Jong in the same bracket; there’s little doubt that Moses is an attractive Fantasy proposition amongst that kind of company.

  • Wigan’s fixtures provide ample opportunity for Moses to raise his profile and FPL value. Incredibly, Martinez’s side face all three promoted sides in their first three Gameweeks. As they found with Blackpool last season (losing 0-4 on the opening day), that can be a double-edged sword but Wigan will be expected to craft opportunities in all three matches, giving Moses the chance for returns.

  • The pre-season has confirmed that Moses is growing in stature. N’Zogbia’s departure has opened the way for a definite starting role and increased responsibility and, on the evidence so far, Moses is relishing the prospect.

  • While Moses has, to this point, failed to make an impact in terms of raw statistics and Fantasy output, that can be attributed to the fact that his opportunities have been severely limited. Despite making 21 league appearances last season, Moses was given just 8 starts; he was subbed in every one of those games, often just after the hour-mark.

  • Right now Wigan’s attacking options look limited. Just as N’Zogbia’s ball carrying abilities and direct style of play had him stand out within Wigan’s lineup, Moses has shown similar talents that could see him emerge as the Latics’ key threat to opponents. It’s clear from analysis of last season’s performance statistics that Moses will need to raise his game – to make a significant step up in his end product. Renewed confidence from a prolonged run in the side could provide the impetus for that. A risk then, but at his budget Fantasy valuation, certainly a tempting one.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I've reconsidered QPR fixtures and they aren't that good IMO. Bolton has great midfield its gonna be tough game, then is Everton away they are very skilled side with good set piece game then is Wigan away, maybe good but all the sheep are gonna sell Taraabt in mean time and we could get him for a discount price if he is worth it. I will give him the WIgan game as a test.

A lot of lad, me included are forgeting Barton, O hara for Sinclair and Taraabt. We are making mistake, aren't we?

That was my first thought but they should take into account it will be West Brom. Then again he did do really well last year so could easily be 5.5m I guess.

Definitely not 4.5m though like some people are hoping for,.

He won't go that much up. Even if he is performing he could go 8.2 at most. He is expensive defender. He needs 2 games in double figures to go above that. DOn't worry about his price rising IMO, THinks is 8.0 for him a good value, In longterm maybe but shorterm I think no. I'd rather have Cahill cause I could easily replace him with any performing mid.

Its Baines or Cashley IMO, Vidic maybe.

P.S. I am happy nobody is talking G.J.

Can you get away with Rooney, RVP and Suarez from the start? I've kinda managed it although the rest of the team inevitably suffers.

    Given
    Kompany Simpson Orr
    Lampard Barton Duff Sinclair
    Suarez Rooney RVP

    subs
    Ruddy
2 cheap DEF (Bramble and Taylor maybe as I think Sunderland/Newcastle and Swansea/QPR rotate ok)
1 cheap MID (Surman maybe? I seem to remember he was decent)

What ya reckon? Too weak elsewhere?

Yeah I've been through at least 20 drafts, and I'm sure my team will be different come kick off.

Here's one for you to consider.

                  Cole, N'Zogbia, Zamora

                  Or

                  Alcaraz, Hoolahan, Rooney.

In my opinion, there's a limit when overloading on top guns becomes detrimental to the team. I have 3 captaincy choices already too with either option.

I'd have to say the first one (especially over the first few gameweeks) even though i'm not a Zamora fan.

The first one looks more balanced. But I can't really say which one is better for your team unless I see it all.

      You have Lampard as well!

      That's crazy stuff.

Your defense is a little too weak. I think there's a limit when this strategy starts to backfire.

Downgrade one of your 4 big hitters. Lampard > Malouda should do nicely, and upgrade the midfield and some of your defense.

It's stacked, but I like it actually on the whole, the structure I mean.

You think the £1.5m saved by doing Lampard > Malouda is worth it? I don't. If Malouda was £9m then maybe but i think Lampard is worth the extra. Chelsea are a headache at the moment. Maybe i should just play safe and get Cole

I think it's worth it. Malouda looks a sure starter on the left, and he's playing in a more advanced role.

The other factor which is in Malouda's favor, is the fact that straight swapping him out is easy. You can get Nani and VdV super smoothly without wasted funds sitting in the bank if need be. Lampard, you could downgrade, but you'd have 2.0m between transfers which is wasted as you watch N'Zogbia outscore Sinclair.

Malouda isn't a sure starter. He should play the most out of the wide fwd options but it's very likely he'll be rotated to some degree.

I think he'll start almost all the matches.

Can't see Benayoun, Kalou, Anelka, Sturridge taking his place unless he has a severe dip in form or gets injured.

He's the only natural left sided player of them, and is probably the best player too.

At worst, he'll get taken off after an hour or so, but he's assured enough for me.

1.5m could get you Clichy if you want to double up on Manchester City's defense.

I think Cole... First 6 games i reckon 4 clean sheets, Everton struggle early and will concede but Baines is effectively a mid so u don't need the clean sheet points as much

      I like Cole more.

Have you seen Chelsea's defense in pre-season! Also, Villas-Boas' tactics suit Cole to a tee. He's a fan of overlapping wing backs, and Cole will probably be the one given license to go forward seeing as Ivanovic will probably play RB.

    Anyone seen this site before?

Seems you have to pay for stats but a couple of the articles I read had some interesting statistical analyses. Could be a handy feather in the cap for fpl managers.

i reckon wait on Suarez... his price is bound to drop with too many people having him - he will need 2 double figure scores to maintain such a high percentage of owners.

i wouldn't say he won't play as he is the type of player who will just be itching... in the end its a marathon not a sprint and for the players best interest i think dalglish will rest him vs sunderland.

    guys how's this team?

    given ruddy
    cole kompany briggs o'shea simpson
    benayoun n'zogbia taarabt sinclair moses
    rooney aguero suarez

gone with the strong strikeforce and cheap, yet profitable midfield and 2 guns in defence with two rotatable cheapies

    a few questions
    1. is benayoun guaranteed a start? he didn't play vs villa!
    2. is briggs gonna start at all in defence or mids?
    3. is aguero worth it?
    any other comments?
    thx
