The departure of Charles N’Zogbia may have left a huge void within Wigan’s squad but in Victor Moses the club may well have a natural replacement. Certainly that’s the opinion of Latics boss Roberto Martinez who has wasted no time in talking up the abilities of the 20-year-old as he looks to reassure the Wigan faithful ahead of what seems likely to be another turbulent season at the DW Stadium.

Moses has already done his best to live up to the billing; three goals in pre-season, including an eye-catching brace to cap an impressive showing against Al Ahli in Austria on Wednesday has added fuel to the fire. Fantasy managers are now on alert and with Moses classified as a budget midfield option across many of the games, it’s clear that the former Crystal Palace starlet warrants our attention.

While nothing is certain with just over a fortnight to go before the kick-off, it’s clear that Moses is positioning himself to make his mark. Martinez has set the scene, lavishing praise on his £2.5m capture in the light of recent pre-season performances; the Wigan boss has few doubts that, in Moses, he has a player capable of providing the kind of individual attacking verve so often delivered by N’Zogbia…

“He’s a special talent…It’s a real shock to any player to move up to the Premier League, but since he’s been here he’s added maturity and experience to his undoubted ability…Charlie [N’Zogbia] has left a big hole in our team but that vacancy is a big opportunity for Victor and maybe a couple of other players to step up…Victor is a different kind of player to Charlie but has the same quality that sets players like that apart from the rest.”

Opportunity knocks for Moses then, but can he grasp it and provide the inspiration for Wigan and rich returns for Fantasy investors?

Key Factors

  • Moses is available as a budget option. Priced at just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game with largely defensive players such as Cheik Tiote, Lucas and Nigel De Jong in the same bracket; there’s little doubt that Moses is an attractive Fantasy proposition amongst that kind of company.

  • Wigan’s fixtures provide ample opportunity for Moses to raise his profile and FPL value. Incredibly, Martinez’s side face all three promoted sides in their first three Gameweeks. As they found with Blackpool last season (losing 0-4 on the opening day), that can be a double-edged sword but Wigan will be expected to craft opportunities in all three matches, giving Moses the chance for returns.

  • The pre-season has confirmed that Moses is growing in stature. N’Zogbia’s departure has opened the way for a definite starting role and increased responsibility and, on the evidence so far, Moses is relishing the prospect.

  • While Moses has, to this point, failed to make an impact in terms of raw statistics and Fantasy output, that can be attributed to the fact that his opportunities have been severely limited. Despite making 21 league appearances last season, Moses was given just 8 starts; he was subbed in every one of those games, often just after the hour-mark.

  • Right now Wigan’s attacking options look limited. Just as N’Zogbia’s ball carrying abilities and direct style of play had him stand out within Wigan’s lineup, Moses has shown similar talents that could see him emerge as the Latics’ key threat to opponents. It’s clear from analysis of last season’s performance statistics that Moses will need to raise his game – to make a significant step up in his end product. Renewed confidence from a prolonged run in the side could provide the impetus for that. A risk then, but at his budget Fantasy valuation, certainly a tempting one.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

A few games used to include FAC games. I thought a maximum of 32 transfers and only five changes of Captain in each half of the season is really going to sharpen you up to make longer term choices.

        Hi, ILF.

I have a team in the Daily Mail game too, and just picked what I consider to be long term bets over the course of the season.

I don't think I'll pay it much attention unless one of my players sustains a long term injury (which usually happens), but it's a fun diversion from the BPL game, as is Metro and Sky and that game on Facebook.

10 minutes total per week for all of them is just fun.

Hope you enjoyed your ciggie. 🙂

    hello everyone,

how does this team look so far?

    given, ruddy
    kompany, cole, bramble, simpson, orr
    sess, malouda, nzog, sinclair, dyer
    zamora, aguero, rvp

i'm not totally sure about aguero. i might downgrade cole and upgrade aguero to rooney just to be safe, but what do you guys think?

Funny, everyone has Given and he was one of the first names in my squad but now i've gotten rid. As keepers go he's fairly injury prone so I figure Schwarzer/Dunne is worth the extra .5m ahead of Given/Hughes.

Not surprising that most teams look similar at the start of the season.

          Almost everyone want:
Given as a keeper, and another cheap keeper who rotates well with him[read Ruddy]

          Defenders from Chelsea and City.[Kompany+Cashley]

Two expensive forwards with good fixtures[considering none of the high priced MF seem good value to me][2 From RVP/Aguero/Rooney/Suarez]

          And some Chelsea attacking cover[Malouda]

Get these and fill the other pieces.

On a whole...I don't like it, but I don't hate it either. I'll have fun reading your responses:

      -Nani= rotation risk
      -Cahill= bad fixtures
      -Drogba= not a certain starting spot..yet.
-Ferguson= I would fork out .5 more and get someone like Tiote.
-Salgado= Don't like the look of Blackburns defence this year.

btw, I would get Orr over Gabbidon. never got a goal, asisst or bonus point during his FPL career.

Looks good but your defence is sh!te.

Drogba's obviously your big risk and I doubt Chelsea will play with 2 frwards that often.

Get someone other than Ferguson, buying him because he's cheap is pure idiocy and his price will likely drop below 4m when he never kicks a ball and 80,000+ managers realise they have dead wood in their squads.

With that squad I'd probably downgrade Drogba or a pricey mid and upgrade Ferguson and Wilkinson.

Yeh i do agree with your Ferguson reasoning.
I know Evertons fixture are average at best but Tim Cahill just seems to be a points magnet as long as he is fit. And also hes an Aussie so a bit of patriotism there haha.
Ill make a decision on Drogba and Nani closer to the season starting.
Blackburn can keep clean sheets against the lesser teams so at 4.5 i think Salgado can be good value because obviously I will be rotating 2 of the 4 defenders each week.

        Cheers for the feedback guys.

Nani - For 10m,I would want someone who starts every game. Not sure if thats the case with Nani

VDV - Not great fixtures to start with.

Cahill - Everton start off slowly, and not great fixtures

Drogba - Again 11m for someone who isnt nailed on to start every game.

RvP - Rooney has better fixtures for first few GWs

Moses to get the money for Suarez. Interesting.

You think a lot like I do. Same initial idea to do Cole + Zamora > Hughes + Suarez, and now another variation which wouldn't compromise Cole who's a great prospect to open the season.

If I'm any good at FPL, you'll be doing just as well if your thinking remains along the same lines.

              How is it unproven?

The only players I'd really consider risks are Aguero and maybe Sessegnon.

The cheapies aren't going to hurt if you chose incorrectly. Sinclair, Moses and Dyer aren't going to make or break the team.

All you points will come from Aguero (unproven) Suarez(prob wont play till gw3 unless daglish changes his mind) RVP and Malouda( rotation risk)

4 Captaincy options in attack with a solid defense.WOW!

Not sold on Moses and Dyer!

      I have Zog+Barton+Taarabt+Holt instead of Your Sess+Moses+Dyer+Suarez.

Suarez is tempting, but I think ill stick with what I have

    aren't a rotation risk,
not involved in an ongoing transfer saga,
    have welcoming fixtures Aug-Sep &
    are't injured/rumoured to be?

Is Silva a rotation risk esp since city have champs league football thrown into their calender too?

Just wondering why Sessegnon is so highly fancied on here? I see him in over 50% of RMTs here.

He did okay for a couple of months last season but it flatters to deceive by the fact that all Sunderland's strikers got injured so he was pushed alone up front.
He won't have pen duties anymore either.

Does anyone else remember their starting team from last season?

I still remember, and it's somewhat painful.

    Foster, Hahnemann
    Alex, Evans, Jara, Steinsson, Samba
    Arshavin, Valencia, Petrov, Arteta, Albrighton
    Drogba, Tevez, Carroll

    +1.0 in the bank

Wonderful midfield isn't it? Lucked out on the strikers. Was 10 weeks ahead of the game.

Yeah it's interesting for sure, especially the team structure.

2 rotatable goalies, 3 heavy defenders, 2 captaincy choices, mid range midfield. I still had that midfield bench fodder in Albrighton though. Now, with a team which looked similar, I'd hate it.

It's be very, very roughly the equivalent of a team which looked like:

        Given, Kenny
        Kompany, Kelly, Hughes, Bramble, Simpson
        Silva, Downing, Dempsey, Sinclair, Dyer
        RVP, Suarez, Holt

What do you think of that?

Well going by price, those 3 - Kompany, Kelly and Hughes are the same price as Alex, Evans, Samba.

Kelly is very similar to Evans as a 5.5 surprise starter for a good team.

Hughes maybe is no Samba because no attacking threat, but to be honest, no one is at that price point this season.

Boselli was a textbook case of how hype on these boards can cloud your own judgement. The lad couldn't hit a barn door, I didn't know much about him yet I still put him in my team.

The season before that everyone had to have Carrick in their team. Only 7.5m for a MU player! And he might be on pen duties now that Ronaldo's gone! *facepalm* Glad I avoided that bandwagon.

This season the flop will likely come from Sinclair, Taarabt, Moses or Sessegnon.

Personally, I think it'll be Moses, but that won't be too painful since he's not very expensive.

Schwarzer and Jussi (Given the fact that I stupidly assumed the rumours about Schwarzer going to Arsenal would come to fruition).
Kolarov. The bandwagon that only had three wheels.
Malouda, Arteta, Nani (who I sold in GW3), Fabregas.
Drogba (My captain, great choice!), Boselli (Mr Facepalm)

Fun stuff to have Boselli. It must be great looking back to see someone as catastrophically bad as he was in your team.

I signed him twice and got burned twice. And yet! If City pick up injuries and have a winger shortage i'll sign him again damnit! Especially since Clichy will have the left back spot sewn up, so the flop will be on the wing when he gets his chance.

    Latest thinking:

    Given (Kenny)
    Cole, Baines, Kompany (Simpson, Wilkinson)
Malouda, Benayoun, Taarabt, N Zogbia, Moses
    RVP, Zamora (Holt)

Kenny as I don't like Norwich defence
Three regular defenders & two 4 starters who'll only come in on an emergency basis
Benayoun can easily be swapped with Sessegon/Sinclair if...
RVP for reliable form (injuries aside), Zamora for fixtures, Holt will be this year's Carrol 😉

These pre-season fixtures are deeply worrying and create a lot of wretched kneejerk bandwags.

My beautiful defence has become rather expensive all of a sudden with Luiz and Bad K to accompany my three ubercheaps 🙁

If Baines doesn't take off he's easy to downgrade to Vidic, or if I need a new 'essential' midfielder - Baines down to a decent 5mil player giving me cash to splurge whilst others have the heartbreaker of losing a striker or midfielder 🙂

Right, just for sh!ts and giggles let's throw out a few player names that don't get mentioned too much who could be a nice sneaky punt..

    I'll go with

I like these types of posts. Like Wheater as a potential Samba-esque goalscoring CB.

      I'm a fan of:

Gardner (Sunderland seem to be all about Sessegnon, but this guy has a great shot on him, and he should play regularly)

Gutierrez (All talk seems to be on Barton, but Gutierrez is the supplier, and if Demba Ba gets his big head on some crosses, Maradona's favorite could score well)

Kenwyne Jones (for a 6.5 striker, he's been badly overlooked by many in favor of the kinder fixtures available to Zamora, Rodallega and Ba, but he's Stoke's lone frontman, and he could score really well if Delap keeps pumping'em in there.)

I'm actually pretty happy with my current squad:

    Given (Ruddy)
    Kompany, Cole, Hughes (Enrique, Gibbs)
    Malouda, Sess, Sinclair, Moses (Dyer)
    RVP, Aguero, Holt.

1M in the bank so have some flexibility if any of the new guys turn out Bosellish.

But feel free to pull it apart, gnaw on its bones and then spit it back at me. 🙂

I learned last season that it's important to have an expensive "Spine" for your team. i.e. one pricey Defender/Mid/Forward.

Makes it much easier to chop and change when one of the pricier players hits form and one of yours is "doing a Torres". 😉

That budget bonanza in midpark worries me. Silva a worthy punt at this stage. Aguero is a bit of a gamble-wait for him to settle in first.

The defence is too pricey and causes you problems elsewhere.

RVP good but I'd rather see him with Zamora and Suarez at this stage, provided he starts.

Can easily swap Aggers out for Suarez, Carroll or Rooney if either one shows more promise. Silva just nancies around most of the time apart from the occasional spectacular goal, and doesn't score well in FPL terms which is a shame. Hopefully he'll be assisting the assist to Aggers.

The budget bonanza in midfield is a calculated risk since I think that one or two of them will become bandwagon material, so hope they increase in value over the first few weeks.

I'll play Given every week barring a catastrophe such as him decapitating himself with his bootlace.

If it doesn't work out then I'll have to wildcard in GW4, as per usual. 🙂

      That's an expensive defense.

I'd scrap Enrique and Gibbs to fund someone who won't be as flop likely as Moses.

I like Holt though, could be this season's Carroll.

I pretty much only have Enrique at the moment because he may move to Liverpool. If not then he's out for a cheapo 4.0er and I'll probably upgrade Moses since he is the biggest risk in terms of floppiness.

At least that's what Mrs. Moses tells me. 😉

He played left wing last season so that is news to me but not followed him pre-season. Would be very surprised if they have changed a winning formula though and put him as the lone striker. I assumed Graham will play there. Ultimately, Swansea won't score many goals.

I've been anti walters since last season. I did some chalkboard research for stoke's dgw to decide between etherington & walters.
Eth's average position was much more advanced despite walters lining up as a striker. He spent more time passing and dribbling in and around the box while walters heatmaps looked more like a cm. Spends a lot of time putting in tackles around the halfway mark and then offloading the ball.
Mind you despite my slagging him off he got a fair amount of goals last year.

    Bale, Silva, Albrighton, Brunt, (Watson)

Don't know why I'm putting it on here, I suppose it's because I'm happy with my team but I've just been reminiscing about the kind of cartoons I used to watch growing up in the 90's, I wish I was 6 again so I could enjoy Dexter's Laboratory, Ed Edd and Eddy, The Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Stop the Pidgeon, Pinky and the Brain, The Cramp Twins and Fairly Oddparents on Cartoon Network as well as Keenan and Kal on Nickleodeon and Pokemon back when it was good. Any of these ringing a bell for anyone? No? Am I on my own? Well my generation was the best, and back then cartoons were so cool, there was also one with Jackie Chan in it and a girl called Jade, and one with a robot made out of cubes, anyway, I miss them...

Given would be well worth an extra 0.5. I'd go bramble over brown, safer and more goal threat. You obviously need to monitor the suarez situation. My preference is roon instead of rvp but could go either way. Taraabt has good potential but I'd start with a proven player like duff or sess at that price.

I get the impression seesegnon behind gyan will start 1st choice. Whickam will get plenty of opportunities to claim a starting spot though.

Why do a lot of people have N'Zogbia? Is he a must have?

      No such thing.

I think the only must haves I have ever seen was Ronaldo back when he scored 2 goals a game.

I think I`m leaning towards a Saurez-Aguero-Torres front line for the start of the season . On form this front line is SH$T hot 🙂

Sorry no holt = fail. You do realise it won't be possible to finish top 100k without holt. Ronaldo mkII.
When superman goes to bed he puts on his grant holt pyjamas.

Like it. Rafael's way dodgy too may full backs at Utd.

Odem's a lovely player, but I think most are waiting for better fixtures.

      Keepers good
Def- good rafa may be rotation risk
Mid- lamps may pay off big time, u can rotate the other 4
Att- fine, not sold on odem, u could downgrade to a 5.5 and try upgrade zamora to saurez.

It's a good team, wouldn't change it to much.

Good advice vicanza. Replied to you above.
Sumatera I would add to that consider swapping brown for bramble. Safer pick and a bit more attacking nous imo.
