The departure of Charles N’Zogbia may have left a huge void within Wigan’s squad but in Victor Moses the club may well have a natural replacement. Certainly that’s the opinion of Latics boss Roberto Martinez who has wasted no time in talking up the abilities of the 20-year-old as he looks to reassure the Wigan faithful ahead of what seems likely to be another turbulent season at the DW Stadium.

Moses has already done his best to live up to the billing; three goals in pre-season, including an eye-catching brace to cap an impressive showing against Al Ahli in Austria on Wednesday has added fuel to the fire. Fantasy managers are now on alert and with Moses classified as a budget midfield option across many of the games, it’s clear that the former Crystal Palace starlet warrants our attention.

While nothing is certain with just over a fortnight to go before the kick-off, it’s clear that Moses is positioning himself to make his mark. Martinez has set the scene, lavishing praise on his £2.5m capture in the light of recent pre-season performances; the Wigan boss has few doubts that, in Moses, he has a player capable of providing the kind of individual attacking verve so often delivered by N’Zogbia…

“He’s a special talent…It’s a real shock to any player to move up to the Premier League, but since he’s been here he’s added maturity and experience to his undoubted ability…Charlie [N’Zogbia] has left a big hole in our team but that vacancy is a big opportunity for Victor and maybe a couple of other players to step up…Victor is a different kind of player to Charlie but has the same quality that sets players like that apart from the rest.”

Opportunity knocks for Moses then, but can he grasp it and provide the inspiration for Wigan and rich returns for Fantasy investors?

Key Factors

  • Moses is available as a budget option. Priced at just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game with largely defensive players such as Cheik Tiote, Lucas and Nigel De Jong in the same bracket; there’s little doubt that Moses is an attractive Fantasy proposition amongst that kind of company.

  • Wigan’s fixtures provide ample opportunity for Moses to raise his profile and FPL value. Incredibly, Martinez’s side face all three promoted sides in their first three Gameweeks. As they found with Blackpool last season (losing 0-4 on the opening day), that can be a double-edged sword but Wigan will be expected to craft opportunities in all three matches, giving Moses the chance for returns.

  • The pre-season has confirmed that Moses is growing in stature. N’Zogbia’s departure has opened the way for a definite starting role and increased responsibility and, on the evidence so far, Moses is relishing the prospect.

  • While Moses has, to this point, failed to make an impact in terms of raw statistics and Fantasy output, that can be attributed to the fact that his opportunities have been severely limited. Despite making 21 league appearances last season, Moses was given just 8 starts; he was subbed in every one of those games, often just after the hour-mark.

  • Right now Wigan’s attacking options look limited. Just as N’Zogbia’s ball carrying abilities and direct style of play had him stand out within Wigan’s lineup, Moses has shown similar talents that could see him emerge as the Latics’ key threat to opponents. It’s clear from analysis of last season’s performance statistics that Moses will need to raise his game – to make a significant step up in his end product. Renewed confidence from a prolonged run in the side could provide the impetus for that. A risk then, but at his budget Fantasy valuation, certainly a tempting one.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The only downside to this team atm I think is that it may be tricky choosing a captain each week.

Malouda/Silva/Bent are all good captain choices but are players that can just as easily get 2 points in games where you would expect them to get 10+

I've never been a bent fan in fpl. I've always gone with cheaper rotatable options or top dollar ones that back up their goals with assists, Bp's, set pieces.
Bent lies somewhere between in a pricing limbo along with defoe.
Yet he's guaranteed plenty of goals and like defoe has burnt me plenty of times with some huge hauls.
And yet again I'm going to ignore him knowing full well his goals will yet again burn me.

Give this a crack lads. For each promoted bandwagon name their proven premier league equivalent in terms of style, ability, mentality:

Sinclair: agbonlahar (when playing on the wing)
    Graham: Steve fletcher
    Hoolahan: o'hara
    Holt: Davies
Taraabt: can't think of one, style: ronaldo, ability: dorrans, mentality: arshavin 😕

Don't know the promoted teams well so might be off the Mark

I'm not se sure Sessegnon is the same kind of bandwagon. He is proven in the premiership...did really well at the end of last season and for the same team he plays in this season.

Boselli was untested in the prem.

Petrov moved teams and his influence diminished.

Taarabt, Sinclair, Holt are all band wagons in the mould you are talking about. Sessegnon isn't.

certainly proven himself more than Taarabt and Sinclair who are both in pretty much every RMT I see.

To play in the premiership you need skill, athleticism and confidence. Boselli failed as he lacked the confidence in the end. We only realised that after he had flopped. Sess clearly as the three key skills.

really good mix...just quite a few risks there for my liking.

      You are relying on

Aguero - Dyer - Moses and Orr to hit the ground running.

Weirdly only Moses out of that lot has Prem experience and even that was limited.

Do you play rotating Moses and Dyer? If so and you have confidence in Dyer then that could work. But if you think Dyer is just bench fodder then that means you will have to play Moses pretty much every week.

Due to the pricing of the mids there is a hell of a lot of choice in the 6-6.5 category. But alot of RMTs I see focus on three to four untested premiership players or players who have moved teams and therefore are still a little unknown. May be better to consider taking a punt on just one or two of those and focusing on proven pts scorers instead.

For every Taarabt, Sinclair and Hoolahan there's a O'Hara, Barton and yes that man Sessegnon again.

    Just a thought.

Thats a fair point... I am looking at 2 'potentials' and 2 proven (not sissy, not proven)

Will asses sissy after gw2, they got LFC(a) first game....

me too Evs....I'm going for a punt on Taarabt, but am aware that;s a punt. None of us really know whether he will bottle it or whether teams will mark him out of games (just like Derby did).

My other potential at the moment is Moses...due to him being the best potential for that price.

Sinclair is so tempting..but like Taarabt is a risk. Much prefer one of Ohara, Barton or Sess until I can work out whether he's the real deal.

Only problem is that Sinclair and Taarabt rotate so, so well...but that rationale relies on having four other great mids to play...very few RMTs I've seen have that.

Lamps, Sinclair, Zog, Tara-butt (n dyer good bench warmer at 4.5)

            I'm going

            Given - Al Habsi

Kompany - A Cole - Simpson - Hughes - Bramble (TM Doosra defence)

Malouda(or VDV for gw1 then switch) Tarabt- Sess- Ohara - Moses

            Zamora - RVP - Bent

I see that as two risjs in Tarabt and Moses and one half risk in Sess.

I disagree. The key to these budget mids is if they are on pens. You don't need to be Prem proven to put a spot kick in the net.

but you do need to have the confidence to tuck them away.

For example A Young having penalty duties was a curse last season not a blessing.

Do any of us really know how Sinclair will react when he places a spot kick down in front of the Kop or at home facing Cech or Shay Given.

your example is not accurate, as Young IS prem proven. it's on the individual. and you act like these players have never felt pressure or taken tough kicks. they usually are on pen duty because they thrive there.

anyway, of course there is risk there. that's why they are budget mids. no risk no reward...

getting penalties is a complete lottery and unpredictable. Everton went almost a whole season without a penalty last year.
Holds too much weight in picking players imo. I'd much rather have someone on corners and free kicks, you know it will give them chances every game. I just look at pens as a nice bonus.

Taarabt marginally swings it for me over Sinclair as his first fixture is good and you can easily shift him to Sinclair if he's a flop. The move from Sinclair to Taarabt requires finding an extra 0.5 somewhere.

I'd prefer to lessen the risk further.

Graham and Holt are both big big risks...more so than Taraabt and Sinclair.

how about finding a little spare and going

            Taraabt and A Johnson

            or

            Sinclair and Doyle.

Not sure why there's so little love for Doyle here. For Wolves early home games...even away against Blackburn in game one I'd easily prefer Doyle over Graham or Holt.

Sinclair and Doyle is pretty good..they dont rotate that well is the only down side.

Perhaps this may be the start of a Doyle bandwagon?

quite a sensible bandwagon if i do say so. I dont need doyle & sinclair to rotate as such. I'll have probably 4 rotating attackers to start. for example if i had doyle, sinclair, sess/duff & moses I'd play 3 of the 4 each week.
Not saying I'll use those players as i havent checked fixtures but I prefer something like this than having a 4.5 bench fodder that I never play.

Taarabt is like a budget Ronaldo - fancy dan tricks, fast, excellent touch and control, and he both assists and gets goals. He didn't cut it for Tottenham, but may have been frozen out a la Bentley, Kranjcar etc. The jury's out over whether he can continue his form into the Prem. I was unsure at first cos he looked to be going to PSG. I'm backing him, I have in my team. Some people don't like him at all, I DO.

do you not think knowing his attitude issues of the past and the fact that he was pretty much chief engineer in his own move away which collapsed, also taking into account pre season has unsettled the camp (has he featured that much?) the sulker may just not perform?

yeah that's a worry, but he's like Ronaldo was at united in the sense that he will get picked regardless of his attitude, and the team will be built around him when he's available. if qpr start well, taarabt will be at the heart of everything imo

taraabt is the biggest gamble imo. He has the ability to score much better than sinclair, duff, sessegnon, albrighton etc but also has the most suspect mentality and therefore potential to flop badly. He's a wait and see for me.
Sinclair seems a bit safer due to a better mentality, work ethic and a very direct, greedy playing style.
Both hog pens and free kicks which is a must gambling on unproven players in weak teams at that price.

Taarabt is a gamble, will he cut it or won't he? BUT the time to take the gamble is at the start as their first few fixtures are favourable for them, it makes no sense to wait and see through his kind run then get him in when the fixtures toughen up.

Swansea, Norwich and QPR have fair starts compared to team like Bolton, Sunderland etc.

yep fair points chill pill. His price makes it tricky too though (highest I've ever seen a promoted player). For 6.5 I'd rather start with duff or sessegnon who also have good fixtures and we know exactly what to expect. If i'm going to punt on an unproven player id want him to be cheaper so just benching him if he struggles isn't an issue. At 6.5 taraabt struggles your going to feel the need to use a trade replacing him. Whereas hoolahan, holt or graham can be more easily benched and forgot about if need be.

Having Baines, Lamps, Torres, and RVP is making your midfield a bit weak. I would get rid of at least one of them to give you a bit more strength in depth.
If keeping RVP and Torres, I would maybe buy a cheaper third striker and add a third decentish defender.

I do think Moses is a worthy cheap midfielder who has a good run of starting fixtures, but not to sure about the others.

just my opinion mind you 🙂

      this my line up

      (GK) Given
      (DEF) Luiz Evra Hughes Samba
      (MID) VDVaart Bains Park N'Zogbia
      (FWRD) RVP Suarez
      Bench:
      (GK) Harper
      (DEF) Simpson
      (MID) Ferguson
      (FWRD) Beattie

my thing is to have shit players on the bench and keep good players on the field but then if one gets injured ill have to put one of the sub-players but for now i should be fine 🙂

Who is Bains? And Park? Really? He's not a guaranteed start and United's fixtures are total shit for the first 10 GWs... Evra will not score well. Your Sub GK is also not a good choice, maybe go for Kenny, Al Habsi, De Vries, Ruddy or another cheap alt that could get some points in when Given fixtures aren't favorable

      Ok too much information.

Best to have a think about the following and then see which one fits the bill.

Impressive tackle put a good post up here recently about spreading the cash early on to give you most flexibility to jump on bandwagons.

      He recommends Goalies = 10%
      Defenders = 25%
      Midfielders = 37.5%
      Forwards = 27.5%

Less likely to get pts in defence so maybe best to play three at the back most weeks.
Man City- Chelsea (plus rotating New-Sunderland-Fulham cheapie)s is a good way to go. Doosra recommends this rotation strat.

Consider reducing risks..Moses, Sinclair, Taarabt, Ruddy for example are all risks...maybe swap Sinclair for O Hara.

Look at fixtures. Do you really want to play three of Sinclair, Moses, Taarabt and N Dyer every week?

I hear all the talk about Wigan defenders but they have the easiest opening fixtures agains the 3 new teams. I've al habsi in mine with given to rotate. Also rodalega till gw4.

i don't think it's as easy as it appears. new teams tend to start pretty well, unknown prospects - difficult to counteract. having said that i have al-habsi on my bench..

All 4 could have shockers this season, I'm not taking a punt on any of them until I see how they shape up.

If I were to take a punt... Carroll & Silva. Mainly because Kuyt's game time is under question. He's very expensive for not many guarantees this year. Squeeze VDV or Young in is my advice.

I have noticed that an awful lot of trust is being put into players new to the premiership, either by transfer or promotion. I wonder in how many previous years this would have been the right move, given the time it often takes to adjust. Have we all been lulled into a false sense of security by last year's high performing cheapies?

Okay, I think my main team is set, defense looks to be totally done, Midfield looks solid, Forwards look good too, with the exception of Holt who is basically a punt.

    Given (Ruddy)
    Kompany, Baines, Enrique (Ward, Briggs)
    N'Zog, Sessegnon, Malouda, Silva (Dyer)
    Zamora, Holt, Rooney (c)

    Rip it apart lads!
