There’s plenty of Premier League clubs in action this afternoon, as pre-season starts to pick up the pace. Ahead of an afternoon in front of the tv with the Emirates Cup and Dublin Super Cup served up as weekend offerings, here’s this morning’s Scout Scribbles:

Roberto Mancini has warned his Premier League rivals that the signing of Sergio Aguero won’t be Man City’s last this summer. Speaking in a press conference ahead of this weekend’s Dublin Super Cup, the Italian explained:

If we want to compete with all the other top teams – Champions League or Premier League – we need other players, but the club are working in this way.

When asked what positions he felt the club needed to bolster, Mancini elaborated:

“One midfielder, one winger.”

This statement will only add to the speculation of a move for Samir Nasri and perhaps further re-inforce the idea that Adam Johnson could be heading to Everton in a loan deal, with Mancini yet to be convinced by his young winger’s consistency, much to the chagrin of the City fans.

James Collins has spoken at length of the new defensive solidity shown by Aston Villa in pre-season. Villa were something of a disappointment in terms of Fantasy investment last season, racking up just 7 clean sheets compared to 15 in the previous 2009/10 campaign but, under new boss Alex McLeish, are looking a better proposition at the back already.

Collins points to the re-introduction of Stephen Warnock to the starting XI as a significant boost to the side, saying:

Stephen had come back in and he’s been great. Obviously when he wasn’t in the team last season, you could still see in training he was still keen to show his qualities. Since he’s been back in, the two games he’s played and in training he’s looked first-class again. So that is like a new signing if you like. I am looking forward to playing with him again.

Warnock played just half Villa’s league games last season and as a result, comes in at 5.0, compared to the 5.5 of Collins and fellow centre-half Richard Dunne.

Aaron Ramsey looks likely to have a pivotal role for Arsenal in this weekend’s Emirates Cup. With Cesc Fabregas sidelined with a hamstring injury and Arsene Wenger concerned over his “unsettled” captain’s state of mind, Ramsey will take centre stage against the likes of Paris Saint Germain and New York Red Bulls over the next couple of days and spoke of his determination to make up for lost time, following his leg-break in February of last year. Playing in the advance central midfield role usually taken by Fabregas, many Fantasy managers will be eyeing up Ramsey ahead of next season; with a 6.5 FPL price-tag against his name, the young Welshman may be a steal.

In other Arsenal-related news, Arsene Wenger confirmed the news that Theo Walcott’s ankle injury is not as bad as the club had anticipated. Asked in yesterday’s press conference if the player will be ready for the start of the season in a fortnight’s time, Wenger replied that the club are hopeful on the matter. A bit of good news for the Gunners, then.

The idea of a Carlos Tevez/Samuel Eto’o swap deal has re-surfaced once again. Both Man City and Inter Milan are taking part in this weekend’s Dublin Super Cup and with Tevez desperate for a move away from the Etihad Stadium, City are reportedly determined to seal a deal for Eto’o, their long-term target.

A hamstring injury may have scuppered John O’Shea’s start to his Sunderland career, but Black Cats boss Steve Bruce is confident his new captain will be fit for the season opener at Liverpool:

I’ve got no worries about John. I’m not looking at risking him in our next two friendlies – it’s a case of erring on the right side caution….the knock he’s got is not a serious one. And he’s one of those players who can come into training and pick things up very quickly. As things stand, I’m sure he’ll be all right for the Liverpool game.

Great news, then, for Fantasy managers considering O’Shea ahead of the August 13th kick-off. Priced at 5.0 in FPL, we’re expecting big things from the Irishman this season, too; check out our Members Projections area to see just why.

QPR look set to boost their forward options by snapping up DJ Campbell from relegated Blackpool. Campbell was one of the best value Fantasy options last term, scoring 13 goals for Ian Holloway’s side, but while Blackpool were given license to attack by Holloway’s open 4-3-3 formation, QPR tend to operate far more tentatively, with a 4-2-3-1 shape set up to get the best out of Adel Taarabt. Campbell may well be vying with fellow new signing Jay Bothroyd for the lone forward slot, unless Neil Warnock has an alternative plan up his sleeve.

Spurs were the only Premier League club in action yesterday, chalking up a 4-1 win at Leyton Orient. Nico Krancjar continued his fantastic pre-season form by grabbing a goal, with Peter Crouch picking up a double in the one-sided affair. Krancjar is a real source of frustration for Fantasy managers- clearly, he’s got the talent but, in spite of his recent impressive form, it would be something of a surprise if he found his way into Harry Redknapp’s first-team thinking at Tottenham. At just 6.0, many will be hoping ‘Arry has a change of heart, particularly if Luka Modric does depart the Lane this summer.

Aguero and Suarez havent played enough premier league minutes to be sure of their points...Clichy at a new club so unsure how he does... Two unproven midfielders in premiership

But if your fine with that.. its a good team thats what fpl is all about

Dyer is a decent (winger) bench pick for 4.5m

Denial, I am not changing my fav def 3... last year i got stuffed so much by likes of rafeal, kolarov & coleman. Not again, I can play them in... EVERY game.

My only concern is Rodders 😥 ???

On average, players score 1.5x more goals at home than away (and concede 1.5 x fewer too, of course)

So this has got me thinking a 5 million player at home is arguably better than a 7 million player away from home (against similar opponents)... so I really think it's better to have subs that rotate and avoid the 4 million guy sitting on the bench every game.

A lot of people are going for 2 fixed defenders, a rotating pair and a permanent sub.

I think 1 fixed def with two 5-5.5mil rotating pairs is better and worth either investing more in defence or less on the fixed player.

From what ive been reading on here you get a lot more points for assists and passing where the sun is based around clean sheets and players getting over a seven rating for bonus points, Bardsley is my only worry your right but he is 2.5 million in the sun whereas a good defender is usually about 4 to 5 so hes a cheap risk but does get forward and sunderland should have a decent back four this year,he says with crossed fingers!

3 questions plz, that most of us would like answers i think...

Does any L'pool fan know if Jose Enrique is signing before start of season?

Any Citeh fan that would know if Yaya Toure is going DMC this season, so compared with Silva he's no go?

What u all think bout N'Zogbia in his new team, is he going to take freekicks, corners, pens maybe, like in old team?

    Cheers

        Don't know.
Yaya's a good bet - the new BP system suits him.
Bent will be on pens - he's one of the best in the League.

Only problem with NZogbia is that he has a massive % owned, so if he flops in the first 2 weeks at the new club, expect price drops.

I can't see Yaya playing up high up with Aguero now there, unless he leads the line?

    De Gea (Ruddy )
John O'Shea , Aaron Hughes, Vincent Kompany (Warnock . Boyata)

yeah ferguson is a risk but Im hoping Warnock might be able to replace any injuries seeing as he looks to be a tarted under Mcleish.
And hopefully players like Taarabt, Barton and O shea could jump a little in value.

haha Thanks. 8.5.. I like the sound of that.
Midfield wise I'm thinking of making room for a player like Lampard or Toure but im pretty happy with the players atm and don't wanna regret taking them out and seeing them flourish in the opening weeks.

After a great deal of chopping and changing i finally have a team that has remained unchanged for 5 days (a personal pre-season record!) so decided it was time for my first post of the year to see if you think I am right to be feeling confident:
    GK
Given (a steal at this price, villa should be much more solid this season)

Ruddy (cheap and good rotation with Given when needed)

    DEF
Baines (expensive but a constant source of points - especially if Arteta is out again)

    Kompany (obvious pick)

Hughes (struggling to find the best value at this price. If Enrique moves then he would be good ans Oshea also tempting but Fulhams start seems to be the best)

Alcarez (wigan have a strong start)

    Simpson (best value at 4)

    MID

VDV (I'm expecting great things - his dominance of set plays means he will always get points and should be on pens full time now)

Lamps (IMO you need a chelsea attacker and he is the only one I am sure will start every game and get points)

Taarabt (risky, but with QPRs start we will soon know if he'll cut it this season, if he hits the ground running I don't want to miss out!)

Moses (hugely undervalued now N Zogbia has gone, I fully expect many starts and good returns)

Dyer SWA (a 4.5m squad layer that will always start and is there to pick up the odd point when your squad is ravaged with injuries)

    FORWARDS
Loads of people spending all heir money up front this year, I still think that the big mids will make a comeback - especially with the new bonus point system.

Carroll (I will change him for Suarez as soon as it is confirmed he will play - fully expect Suarez to be one of the top scoring forwards this year combining goals assists and bonus)

Bent (a boring choice maybe, but this guy always scores - even when villa get hammered away from home he still seems to tap one in. I have regretted not having him at the start of every season, not this time!)

Holt (5.5 striker. Club Captain. On pens. Yes please)

Excuse the long post but I find the constant 'RMT's with no explanation behind them to be pretty boring to be honest, and unhelpful to everyone else - hence a little bit of explanation for each choice. I look forward to some positive or negative comments about my picks...

    Cheers

I like it, but having a Wigan defender is risky. I don't see them keeping many clean sheets at all.
Maybe go for O'Shea, Rafael or Gibbs? Warnock is also a cheap option who seems to be hitting a run of form coming into the season.
I like the look of the Midfield though and I agree, Baines is probably worth the valuation .

        I jest.

Good sensible reasoning but i my mind i could put up a totally different 15 and give reasons behind each pick and why they are better than each of yours.

A lot of reasoning is general 'opinion'. Case and point is Given, everyone 'thinks' villa should be more solid and that would seem sensible. However, IMO, villa will still leak goals and will be relegation candidates this year.

I wish I had your faith in investing in Wigan! Sadly, favourable fix count for very little as far as WIG is concerned.

Fwd line: I find it very hard to look past a front 3 of Suarez, RVP and Zamora, assuming starts of course. You have no 12 mill fwd which is a concern as you'll need a heavy hitter always in your team.

Lamps is a waste when you have VDV.

Tbh can't argue with most of your reasoning. I'd go with alternatives to some of your picks but that's just my preference and the logic behind your choices is sound.
Only criticism's are you've got some expensive players that aren't the best captain choices Luke bent & carroll. No rooney/rvp means you'll struggle to bring in any of the 11+ strikers when they inevitably hit form. You have a wigan defender.
      Well thought out squad though.

Nice analysis m8. I have a suggestion thou. VdV, besides the good stuff u said, he's also injury prone and he has a really bad fixtures at start, so pts wise i would go for Silva or Yaya since u lack Citeh attack and their fixture is just silly to miss at start of season. This move will free u money to swap Bent to Hernandez or Rooney even, cause they have WBA at start and maybe a little bad fixture at start but its MAN UTD, there will always be goals!

Have this in mind, other than this u're team looks pretty solid.

Thanks for all the comments guys, all valid points and well made. I think VDV is pretty much fixture prrof, I don't have the stats but watched every spurs game last year and VDV seemed to pay and score the best in tough games and less so against bottom half sides.

The lack of 12m striker is a concern. I take the point on Bent but at sunderland he didnt have great service and still scored a hatful.

You've all given me some food for thought though, cheers

Lampard is a rip off ima, if you swapped him for Charlie Z imagine the money you would save?

Hi guys I think I have finally reached my final team. I would greatly appreciate it if you could please tear it apart and RMT it :P.

    Ruddy(Given)
    Luiz,Kompany,Hughes (Bramble,Simpson)
    Malouda,NZogbia,Taarabt,Sessagnon(Sinclair)
    Torres,Carrol,Zamora

Please don't comment on Luiz/Torres since I know they might not start it's a gamble that I'm willing to take as I have future replacements for them.

    Thank you!

Agree if Carrol doesnt do the business can see him being on the bench a lot as Suarez is a beast and good for 15+ this season easily

I would definitely veer clear of Torres. I know you asked not to comment but i definitely feel Aguero would be more reliable.
Zamora sounds good but I'd definitely draft Suarez for Carrol.
Midfield is good but I would'nt go for Malouda this year. I dont see him repeating last seasons goal tally and he's not the best of footballers. Maybe opt for a slight risk on Ashley Young or David Silva?
The defence sounds good but Luiz might'nt be a regular starter..

Thanks for the input. Will definately do torres -> Aguero and Caroll -> Suarez if I know they going to start. As for Malouda. I can probably do Malouda ->Silva but then I have no attacking chelsea coverage.

Malouda will not start every game. A nice differential (and risk) would be benayoun. He's playing in the hole and scoring a lot pre-season. Cheap at 6.0

      Sinclair instead of O'Hara,

...and use the cash saved to upgrade on Johnson (he'll be injured within 5 minutes!)

It's your team so put in who you want.

If Rooney has a great start and Suarez gets rested first few games TJ101 isnt going to be giving you the points back that you lost out on because of taking his advice, is he!

Yes, but Man United's first 5 fixtures include Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea. He ain't going to be racking up the hat-tricks in those. Suarez will start the season. Also, Suarez is 2.5M cheaper. You can do a lot with 2.5m! If you don't like Suarez then at least get some Man City forward line in.

😀 Anderson is subject to Utd not signing anyone else but i have a sneaky suspicion he's going to have a stormer this year after his first pre season. Malouda is a winner, albrighton will play every game, O'Hara is a risk with new BP rules but hopefully he'll be on freekicks etc. Marvauex - cheap.

Chelsea might not have a forward who plays EVERY game this year. With Drogba, Torres, Sturridge, Kalou, Anelka there too much rotation risk. Shame.

Whereas with Man United = Rooney
        Liverpool = Suarez
        Arsenal = VDV
        Citeh = Aguero
