In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

banayoun or malouda will play the more attacking roles or even modric if he goes - im not saying that hes not a good player as hes tremendous but i think that £12mil is alot to ask for a midfielder that could potentially play the holding role

    Given (Ruddy)

Kompany Rafael Alcaraz (Simpson, other 4m defender)

    VDV Benayoun Taarabt Sessegnon (Dobbie)

Bent Suarez Van Persie (or possibly Rooney instead of VP)

That leaves 0.5m spare to play with for week 2.

you could go zamora and ba as 2,3d strikers.

Huth overpriced with rotten fixtures, Dempsey too inconsistent for the money.

Downgrade Huth and Turn Dempsey and Nani into Malouda and Silva (if you can afford it, can't be bothered to check).

Well lads what do you think?

    Given Moreira
    Cole Kompany Baines Bardsley Briggs
    Tarrabt Moses Sinclair Hoolahan Walters
    RVP Bent Suarez

My plan is to rotate the 5 mids and Bardsley depending on fixtures.
I believe its a pretty balanced team. I know I have no big hitters in midfield but I can't see any real value in the mids above 6.5 (there is N'Zogbia of course but I don't want 3 Villans) so I hope this rotation strategy will work.
If i'm missing something please let me know and what do you think of the rotation strategy. Will it work?
    Cheers.

I would've said Baines, Brown, Yaya - but given the money already in your defense I'd go with your second option there.

So true, but not sure if he will start, even when Cesc leaves

Silva looking good, but at the end of the day it's a pre-season game. Not gonna be a prisoner of the moment here, I'm waiting till the community shield and then evaluating him.

An interesting bit for those into their numbers...

If you have Hart and play him every game and he scores 175 points like last season, add 4 mil as you'd need a 2nd keeper and that gets you 15.89 points per fantasy pound.

If you had Given plus a 4 mil keeper and selected Given every game and he got 131 which he got the season before last, add 4 mil and it works out at 15.91 points per fantasy pound.

A lot of its and buts, but here there doesn't appear to be much in it.

Depends which players you're going to go for and who else you have.

Everyone is waxing lyrical about Silva, and yet Balotelli still looks like city's best attacking player atm.

Balotelli isn't nailed on to start.

Silva is classed as a mid and Balotelli isn't. With Aguero around now I wouldn't spend any money on balotelli taking a striker place in my team.

Also City's Most Likely player to get a red card. Or subbed out for intemperate behavior. Or rotated due to his grass allergy.

Grass allergy. I still cannot get my head 'round that one ...

True, but hard to imagine Mancini keeping him on the bench and out of the starting 11

anyone believe there is any significance in vela being given number 11?

i'm surprised gervinho wasn't handed it, wearing clichy's old digits.
