Arsenal’s defence suffers the same old misfortune. Andres Villas-Boas picks up some silverware. Louis Saha grabs a goal on his return from injury. Shaun Wright-Phillips scored for Man City but still seems to be leaving and Bolton’s promising pre-season is overshadowed by an injury to Chung Yong-Lee that looks like sidelining the South Korean for up to nine months. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Arsenal’s back-four once again demonstrated just why so many Gunners fans are keen for defensive reinforcements. Two-nil up and coasting, Johan Djourou was particularly culpable as the side conceded two very avoidable goals and ended up drawing 2-2 with Boca Juniors. Arsene Wenger fielded more questions on the futures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri in yesterday’s post-match press conference:

If Fabregas is committed to this Club and wants to stay, no money will get him out of here. We are not in a position where we need to sell our players. We want to keep our players. We are not looking after money. We want the players to stay here, from our side that is clear.

It’s not ideal for us (Nasri leaving for free) on the financial side but, on the sporting side, he is an important player. We have to deal with the situation one way or another. In the next ten days we have to be clear on that front.

Alex McLeish was upbeat in spite of Aston Villa’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in Hong Kong. One down within a minute, Villa had to chase the game and squad fitness, according to Big Eck, was a fundamental factor in the outcome:

One of the things is fitness and we were clearly behind Chelsea in terms of match fitness. They have played six games now and that’s our third. I thought our players looked a bit weary if I’m honest but we still managed to dig in right until the end. It was pleasing to see the guys fighting until the very end, despite the fact a lot of them were running on empty.

Blackburn grabbed third place in the Barclays Asia Trophy with a 3-0 win over hosts Kitchee. Chris Samba missed the game with a groin strain, but Rovers boss Steve Kean is confident his skipper’s absence is merely short-term :

Chris had a groin strain. He had a scan this morning and the doctor told us there was a little bit of fluid so it would have been a risk if he’d have played, he might have overstretched it. I’m sure he’ll be fit to play against Kilmarnock next Saturday in Scotland.

Bolton’s 3-1 friendly win at Newport was marred by a serious injury to Chung-Yong Lee. A horrendous, lunging tackle from an opposition player saw the South Korean stretchered off with a double fracture of his lower right leg and the player has already been operated on, Owen Coyle said last night :

“We will make sure Chung-Yong gets all the support he needs, as now it is all about his recovery and well-being. That is the most important thing. The operation went well and we would like to pass on our thanks to the medical staff involved.”

Lee is expected to be sidelined for around nine months and the injury means Trotters boy Chris Eagles, priced 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), may well prove a decent Fantasy alternative. Eagles played “in the hole” playing off striker Ivan Klasnic against Newport.

Chelsea picked up their first silverware under Andres Villas-Boas, with the 2-0 win over Aston Villa clinching the Barclays Asian Trophy. The Chelsea boss has yet to see his side concede a goal, and with six wins from his opening six games, has had an ideal pre-season thus far. Rather than single out individuals, Villas-Boas instead focused on his side’s work ethic as the most impressive aspect of his tenure:

Our defensive work is an offensive weapon, that’s what we have been telling the players. We want to attack more so for us to do that we have to get it back as soon as possible. These players have an excellent acceptance of these principles and are able to apply it.

Thanks to them and their commitment we are able to put these ideas across and I think they are enjoying it. Commitment-wise, motivationally, and the professionalism of the players has been something I haven’t seen before.

David Moyes will be pleased with Everton’s 2-1 win at Birmingham. Louis Saha, playing his first game since March, made an immediate impact by scoring just two minutes after coming on as a sub on the hour-mark at St Andrews. Leighton Baines fired home the Toffees first from a free-kick and reminded Fantasy managers just why FPL have priced him so highly, at 8.0, this season.

Shaun Wright-Phillips continued his impressive pre-season in Man City’s 3-0 win over an Airtricity XI. The player picked up his third goal in four game but despite Roberto Mancini recently admitting the club need another right winger, it’s clear Wright-Phiilips doesn’t rank highly in his manager’s thinking and a move from City seems imminent. Mancini said after the game:

For me, it’s difficult to put him on the bench. A player like Shaun deserves to play every game because he’s a strong player. But now, we have so many players it’s not easy for him. I need to speak with him in the next days. It’s difficult because Shaun is a good guy.

Wright-Phillips is just 6.5 in FPL and a move away from City could see him re-emerge as a potential Fantasy target, providing he gets the game time.

Norwich recorded a comfortable 3-0 win at Coventry yesterday but Paul Lambert’s post-match comments indicate plenty rotation can be expected round Carrow Road way next season, saying:

“It’s a 25-man squad and you’re going to need everybody at certain times. It is going to be a really hard season for us, but we’ve earned the right to be here.”

Fantasy managers will be awaiting the injury news on 10.0 FPL-rated Rafael Van der Vaart. The Dutchman was subbed off limping after a strong challenge in the first half of the club’s 3-2 over Brighton yesterday. Last year, the latter part of Van der Vaart’s season was bothered by a calf injury and Harry Redknapp made a habit of taking him off before the end of games, with the Spurs boss admitting concerns over his star player’s long-fitness back in April. In light of this latest incident, more of the same caution may be expected next term.

West Brom’s 1-0 win over Bristol City saw Roy Hodgson once again field Somen Tchoyi as a forward. The Cameroonian played up front alongside Peter Odemwingie and although he limped off in the 68th minute to be replaced by Simon Cox, Hodgson confirmed it was no more than a precautionary measure.

Hodgson confirmed the player is likely to be utilised mainly as a forward in the upcoming campaign, meaning Tchoyi -rated 5.5 in FPL and classified as a midfielder- will be one of this season’s out-of-position Fantasy players:

We don’t have many forwards we think are going to start.Odemwingie got his first full game today. He’s hardly taken any part in the pre-season matches up to now. We also have Simon Cox and Somen – and at the moment they are our main men.

Sir Alex Ferguson moved to dismiss a report attributing quotes to him on the future of Wesley Sneijder. Speaking in a post-match press conference following United’s 2-1 win over Barelona, Fergie described the story as absolute nonsense and chose to talk up the merits of Tom Cleverley instead:

Physically he is not the strongest but he is wiry and has a great idea of the game. He is a good footballer and was our best player today. His discipline was terrific. He is a quick passer of the ball. He has good eyes. It was a big night for him. He is a big, strong possibility for us to start the season.

Fergie also confirmed in this morning’s press conference that despite being taken off after only 17 minutes following a challenge with Sergio Busquets, Rafael should be okay.

i have spent near 4hours over the last 7 days on my side and cant seem get happy.
    atm

    begovic-given
    simpson-kompany-terry-rjohnson-orr
    sinclair-malouda-n'zogbia-taarabt-barton
    gyan-aguero-zamora
    1m in bank.

rjohnson will more than likley be swapped early doors for a cahill, samba.jags ,dawson ect when i see some early results.
i really think terry will grab another few goals this year but i can see a.cole does not get injured as much. but may swap for vidic or someone after gk8,9,10.
sinclair will either be 5.6m after wba and have 10 points or have me a shed full and be 6.3m so he is a major punt on team value as is taarabt. barton, nzogbia, zamora, gyan i see that main players who will score solid and be in every week.
and i want lampard but when the chelsea boss says he is pleased with set plays and malouda is his corner taker this year that says to me he will start 9/10 games in pl.

good balance but only 2 real captaincy options in big players from big teams - Malouda & Aguero. I'd say you need at least one more. Maybe downgrade Terry + Zogbia and upgrade one of your strikers?

Can see Bolton struggling this season, may be best to sell Cahill and strengthen the squad elsewhere, Wheater is an adequate replacement! Not having the goals of Elmander and Sturridge is a problem!
Hoping to have Tevez Captain GW1 and may decide GW2 also against Bolton away? (Obviously its watch this space though)

I wouldn't necessarily pick players to play against Bolton. They're still a well organised team with a really good manager.

That said - I'd avoid actively selecting their players like the plague. Their start (qpr MCY liv MUN NOR ars CHE) is absolutely brutal.

Things clear up after c.GW 8 though - so worth keeping an eye on how they are shaping up, as possibilities could spring up quite quickly.

There’s a LOT of debate going on about taking punts on players from the promoted sides given they arent ‘proven’ in the Premiership. Now last season was my first full season in FPL, so I thought it might be worth going back a few seasons and analyzing the returns of the stars for the promoted sides.

This year the favorites are -
    Swansea – Sinclair, Graham
    QPR – Taarabt
    Norwich – Hoolahan, Holt

    2010/11 –
Newcastle – Carroll & Nolan both major hits
Bpool – Adam huge hit, DJ also
WBA – Odem huge hit but new signing, Dorrans flop

    Please help with the rest-
    2009/10 – Wolves, Birmingham, Burnley
    2008/09 – WBA, Stoke, Hull
    2007/08 – Sunderland, Birmingham, Derby
2006/07 – Reading, Sheff Utd, Watford

By the way I’ve already seen some research that’s food for thought. Statistically promoted teams continue to score a good amount of goals in the Prem but conceded heaps more usually. Augurs well for picking attacking players but staying away from the defense a la Bpool & WBA last season.

Hope this is interesting, would love some feedback as I havent been playing FPL too long.

09/10 We were all talking up Milijas and SEB from Wolves. That worked out well for us. Like you said though, these teams and their players are by definition a punt on some (Carroll/Adam) will work out while others (SEB for me - that still hurts a little) won't.

It won't stop us trying to find someone with value and the death or glory of it is what makes FPL so horribly addictive and frustrating...

Don't think any of those clubs had players like Carroll, Adam, etc. Last season was a bit of a rarity in that so many of the top points scorers were cheap. Those clubs had players who hit form from time to time (Geovanni at Hull) but can't really think of any who did it consistently over the season.

    Repost from older post
Just like to plead a case AGAINST Suarez… he has a 40.4% selection. If he doesn’t deliver big early, a lot will trade him making his price and team values drop… The purchase of downing and the ability of Suarez to play wide will see Carroll score a lot of goals and both those players will assist in a lot of goals… Believe me, if not every man, his dog and his dogs dog hadn’t bought Suarez i’d be all over it, but his price is certain to drop.

Price drops happen when a player's net transfers out reaches 10%.

So the amount of players who own him in the first place doesn't really dictate how likely a player is to fall in value.

Say there are 2 million players on day 1, and 40% have Suarez - that would be 800,000 players who had him.

He'd need 80,000 net transfers out before he fell.

Malouda, by contrast, currently has approximately 5% ownership, which would be 10,000 owners on day 1 if there are a 2 million players.

So he'd only need a net loss of 1,000 owners to go down.

We saw it with Boselli last season that low ownership figures mean that players can hemorrhage value, so I wouldn't be too concerned about Suarez. Plus if he gets a brace on day one you'll be shafted by 40% of players 😛

Will only probably play one or two games anyway. Cant think of any better value for 4.5. Will be rotating Simpson and Bramble for 3rd defensive spot but Wolves rotate well with Newcastle also so gives me plenty of options or even the option to play 4 at the back if I really need to.

I just have no idea of the back 4 for Wolves. Theyve so many defenders.

Wolves have pretty reasonable home fixtures for the most part (FUL TOT QPR NEW SWA WIG SUN) and were a good side last year - probably unlucky not to finish higher.

Johnson will sure up their defense, too, so I think it's fair to expect them to be a good bet for a cleanie here or there.

VDV injury.. Adam is a fair shout til gerrard is fit.
Beckford is a nice bit of variety but having such a polished midfield and strike force has seen ur defence suffer.

Apart from the obvious Chelsea defence drama its quite good.
I think Sess will have a great season playing behind Gyan and Benayoun is a good punt as AVB seems to like him. The fact you have managed to squeeze RVP Drogs and Aguero in without making the rest of ur team look bad deserves some respect

You've done really well to get three Chelsea players in - but you could be sat here at 2.30 on GW1 without one of them in AVB's starting lineup, which is something that would concern me.

Swansea have changed their keeper (who was excellent last season) so I don't fancy them to be as effective defensively as people are expecting. Certainly don't fancy Norwich either, mind.

Is anyone esle considering leaving 1m in the bank before the season starts???

My reason is that we all know we will want to make changes after gw1, but sometimes you are .5m or 1m short abd have to take out 2 or 3 players to be able to afford the one you want.

Do this make sense or am I just over thinking the situation

Another option is to have at least one high value player in each position.

If you have Cole/Malouda/Aguero in your team you can be confident that you'll be able to transfer down to virually whoever you want, whereas transferring up means having to either leave cash in the bank (which is a difficult to justify with prices the way they are this year) or you'll have to spend hard earned points making two transfers.

It does mean you'd have cash in the bank in GW2, but you'd have the added knowledge from GW1 to justify it.

Thats fine but what if you want to keep cole/malouda and aguero and you want to get in a midfielder worth 7m but you only have two 6.5 mids, if you had .5m in bank then no prob but your not gonna get rid of malouda to get in a 7m midfielder and the same for the other positions

yeah, fair point - if you don't mind keeping it spare.

In my mind, all the early tinkering will be to make sure I have players from the big teams for their easy games and I hadn't really considered switching around elsewhere.

There's so many options up front and so few in midfield that I prefer N'Zogbia to Bent. But with the likes of Aguero/RVP/Rooney up front you should be able to bring Bent in pretty sharpish for their home fixtures in GWs 2 & 3 if he becomes difficult to ignore.

Lost on the last thread when this one started so am reposting.

Thoughts on Lescott: I’ve seen a couple of people say they're sure he’ll drop out for Toure when he’s back. After watching Lescott towards the end of last season, I thought he was immense. His presence, positioning & attacking threat make him stand out above Kompany as a fantasy prospect.

I’ll take a punt on him anyway, worth the extra 0.5, though I’ll sulk if I have to waste a transfer when they’d be better off used elsewhere.

Does anyone else think he’s got a good chance of staying in the team regardless of Toure?
