Charles N’Zogbia grabs a goal on his Aston Villa debut. Daniel Sturridge dazzles again for Chelsea and earns the praise of his manager. An ankle knock for Robin Van Persie leaves Fantasy managers awaiting further update. Haris Vuckic forces his way into Alan Pardew’s first-team plans and Andy Carroll grabs another goal for Liverpool as the Reds sign off pre-season in impressive form at Anfield. Here’s your Sunday Scribbles, folks:

As mentioned in last night’s post, Robin Van Persie suffered an ankle knock in yesterday’s 2-1 defeat at Benfica. The Dutchman was felled in the first half and, having received treatment on the sidelines, returned to the proceedings until the interval. Van Persie then failed to appear for the second half in what may just be a precautionary measure. Post-match, Arsene Wenger was vague on the matter but with Van Persie scoring in his last three outings, can ill-afford to lose his main forward ahead of next weekend’s match at Newcastle.

Charles N’Zogbia made an instant impact for Aston Villa, scoring on his debut away to Braga. Alex McLeish was delighted with the display of the new boy and the team as a whole, as Villa earned a 1-1 draw at the home of difficult opponents. Emile Heskey and Gabby Agbonlahor were the wide players for the away side in what looked more like a 4-3-3, judging by reports.

Marc Alrighton was benched for the game at Braga but came on as a second half substitute for N’Zogbia. The youngster has spoken of his desire to nail down a first-team place this season, following the departures of Stewart Downing and Ashley Young earlier this summer:

It’s up to me to work hard and prove my ability every day and then hopefully the gaffer will pick me. It could be my year. Last season proved to me that I’ve got the ability to compete at this level, and although I had some sticky spells I enjoyed it and am looking forward to more.

The fans were great to me. They love a local boy and that helped me to know they were on my side. This season I’m just hoping I can put in more performances to keep that growing.

Chelsea conceded their first goal under Andre Villas-Boas but recovered to comfortably dispense of Rangers. Villas-Boas again played 4-3-3 with Frank Lampard in his usual slot, left of the midfield three. Daniel Sturridge was, once again, a key player for the Blues, netting twice in an eye-catching performance. Suspended for the first three games of the season, Sturridge will play no part in Chelsea’s league matters this August but is clearly making a case for a first-team place in the subsequent months ahead. Villas-Boas praised the player post-match:

Daniel has played his part in pre-season. It is nothing new to us because of what he was doing at Bolton. He has been showing his qualities in the club and we will count on him for this season in a different perspective than before.

Alex partnered John Terry in central defence yesterday, with David Luiz sitting out due to knee pain. Villas-Boas spoke of this after the 3-1 win:

David Luiz should get back to training soon. He got back [from playing for Brazil in the Copa America] and in the first training session he felt a slight pain in his knee. It’s something he didn’t feel in the Copa America and it’s not the reason why he didn’t play. That was just the manager’s decision. But he’s only had half-an-hour training with us, although he should get back this week to full training.

Chelsea have stepped up their player acquisitions this weekend, agreeing a deal with Anderlecht for the services of Romelu Lukaka. The transfer will go through later this week, subject to a medical and the player agreeing personal terms.

Glen Johnson limped out of Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Valencia after only six minutes yesterday. The right-back appears to have a thigh injury and speaking after the game, Kenny Dalglish reckons the club should have a better idea as to the extent of the injury later on today. Fabio Aurelio returned to the Liverpool first-team at left-back and staked a claim for a regular slot with a solid performance. With a move for Jose Enrique mooted, will Auerelio’s comeback persuade Dalglish to keep the chequebook in his pocket rather than splash the cash?

Liverpool played a 4-2-3-1 formation and despite a number of substitutions, kept the same shape throughout the game. This may well prove to be the club’s default formation next season, with the possibility of Luis Suarez tucked in behind Andy Carroll. The ex-Newcastle forward is starting to find his feet at Anfield, scoring for the second game on the trot yesterday ahead of next week’s home opener with Sunderland.

The pre-season form of Haris Vuckic saw him installed in the Newcastle first XI for yesterday’s game with Fiorentina. The Slovenian had scored in the previous two games and although the game was subsequently abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch, looks to be firmly in Alan Pardew’s thoughts ahead of next week’s St James’ Park showdown with Arsenal.

Wayne Hennessey looks like entering the season as Wolves’ number one. The keeper played 80 minutes of yesterday’s win over Real Zaragoza and with another strong performance under his belt, seems like keeping new boy Dorus De Vries on the bench at the campaign begins.

Wayne Routledge made his debut for Swansea yesterday in the 1-0 win over Real Betis. Swans boss Brendan Rodgers introduced the ex-Newcastle man to the proceedings as the furthest forward in a central midfield three, suggesting Routledge may offers options in areas other than the wings at the Liberty Stadium.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Hey guys,

This year for my league we’re doing a draft by picking 15 players each (normal squad 2 gks 5 defs etc) without a 100m budget, those 15 players are yours for the whole season and cannot be used by your league mates, but those 15 dont have to be your FPL team all the time. Players who arent drafted by the 5 of us are fair game for everyone. We can trade with each other during the season. What do you think is the best way to pick in the draft?

try to get as many good pricey players as possible, that way gaining access to as many high scoring players, preventing my rivals from transferring these good players in during the season plus giving me back up in case of injuries. a sqaud of maybe 200m+ and then just use undrafted players to make a squad of 100m on FPL

    or

try and get the squad ill use in the FPL game?

    Interested to hear your thoughts

Lamps is a good option for you as money isn't an issue. Start with The big midfield guns as they are generally the top scorers each season. Midfield>Strikers>Defenders.

This system works better if you run it as an auction. I have done that a few times in the past and its always good fun. If you get the strategy right in the auction you can have a nice edge on the others.

Personally I'd make the high priced, likely to score big midfielders and strikers a priority. RVP, Rooney and VDV come to mine immediately, but anyone of the 10m+ players that has the potential to get a bit of form and start consistently getting scores of 8+ - Lampard, Malouda, Torres, Drogba, Tevez, Carroll, Suarez, etc.

The problem with having players like RVP and VDV in this format is you invest a decent chunk of your funds and they are probably not going to get much over 30 games and you can't ditch them when they get injured. Players from the better African countries lose value for the same reason this season. Rooney/Carroll seem to be the standout options as they aren't fragile and are likely to see 34+ games this season.

If you don't have a budget then if the players are available just go for as good as you can! If you get lucky with the order players are picked in then you can probably have a midfield worth 40m! If you pick last in the first round and first in the second round thats probably the best spot to be in. Before you have your draft draw up the order you would pick players if you were doing the draft on your own. Do this and you will get an edge vs the people who don't and will then make a mistake when they forget a player who is clearly the best pick at the time.

So its 5 people picking 5 mids each? If thats the case then there really should be any mids picked who are under 7m as their are 30+ players in the FPL game priced at like 7.5+.

Are you doing it position by position?
GKs and Defs seem straight forward to pick depending on where you get in the draft. In midfield Lamps seems by far and away the best player as he is a high scorer who always gets a lot of minutes. Midfield looks the most important position to get first pick as all the other high value players all lose value as they are injury prone and/or might not even be in the PL. I think if you don't pick first in midfield get one potential huge scorer like Fab/VDV etc but make sure you other 4 mids are super locks to play a lot of minutes but also have good potential people like Dempsey, N'Zog etc.

Upfront you have more options Rooney, Bent, Carroll all should be good picks Drogba, Torres, Tevez etc lose value for the same reason as VDV/Fab. I wouldn't mind having one risky player in midfield or attack but not one in each position.

no you can pick anyone in any position, 15 rounds of picks. so your saying go lamps, silva, malouda, vdv, dow. I'd like to get Rooney but he'l probably go first pick.

say i got 2nd pick and first pick went rooney would you go RVP or Lamps/silva

Yeah, that makes sense actually. Although towards the end of last season, imagine the huge advantage that having the ability to choose Van Persie would have been. Same goes for VDV at the start of the season actually? But I definitely take your point, I guess one would have to make an eduacted guess as to the potential advantages that can be gained against the chance that the player will at some point become injured.

All that matters is your overall season score so VDV and RVP would have turned out bad picks for last season.

I disagree. VDV was 7th highest scoring midfielder and RVP the 6th highest scoring striker with each playing 2222 and 1770 minutes respectively. That means for the other 1000 odd minutes you'd have been able to play another player that wasn't picked by any of the drafters (conceivably last year that could have included the likes of Hernandez, Carroll, Ba, DJ Campbell, etc.) There's also the point that presumably each drafter will choose 15 players that go beyond the 100 million that the actual team can cost, meaning that they wouldn't be able to play all of their drafted players anyway. I mean, there's still a tradeoff to be considered, but I don't think that injury prone-ness neccessarily means that a player is a bad pick.

But those unplayed minutes weren't all in 90 minute chunks especially with VDV he was always coming off early so you can't fill in with randoms there. If you take into account the way a draft works VDV and RVP would have both been first round picks and of the decent first round picks they wouldn't have scored the highest which is what you want in each round. If you have been first to pick a striker and went with RVP then at the end of the season you would have been rueing that choice. VDV also finished well behind other first round picks like Nani and Malouda. If you were able to get either as a second round pick then you were obviously playing against mentalists and you made a great pick but I am assuming that is unlikely to happen.

Not really you just need to be able to organise everyone to be in one place for an hour to do the auction. The way we do it is each have a squad of 15 then everyone emails their 11 in each week. Then once a month we would have another auction where each person had to ditch at least one player. It works well enough and its a bit different to the norm.

yeah your right it does seem like a better system, more skill involved at least. Just my mate was really pissed at me for beating him last year, thought i "stole" all his players, hence the new draft this season. is there anywhere i can find out more about this system, like starting money 100m? do you bid on all players?

Yeh so you start with a budget so 100m is nice and familiar. Next one person puts a players name forward with a 1m bid and others then bid on that player and whoever bids most gets them. What normally happens is you get very unbalanced sides which leads to some good fun weeks where someones random 1m buy gets 20 points! You just need to make sure not to get carried away I have seen people spend half their budget on one player and get left with junk for the rest of the team! If you know someone really wants a certain player it means you can bid it up which is fun to annoy people! It also means that if you have the better football knowledge it means that at the end you can pick up some amazing bargains.

Can't reply to your post above if its open position then I would say fist 4 would be Lamps, Roo, Suarez, Baines, then maybe throw in a VDV or RVP if you are last in the first round and hope whichever you get stays fit! I think its more interesting when you are all half way through your teams thats where you should pick up the more unfamiliar players who score well.

Reposting my analysis of the EA system from Friday night:

I’ve imported the data used by Andy in his recent article into excel and tried assiging values to the different scores in order to assess how the EA Index is built up. Here’s what I came up with:

    Goal: 15 pts
    Assist: 5 pts
    Appearance: 9 pts
    Win: 9 pts
    Clean sheet (attacker): 3 pts
    Clean Sheet (defender): 5 pts

So, typically, a player who starts, scores and who's team wins the match will get 15+9+9 = 33 pts. A hat-trick is worth 63 pts. Try it, it really works.

The thing that really jumps out is how important goals are. If 3 different players score in a match then they are almost certina to get the boni as goals are worht so much more than everything else. the points for assists and clean sheets tricky judge due to the lack of data but I'm confident they have a very low effect compared to goals.

In terms of data spread, 17/20 attacking players return a predicted total +/- 4 pts from their actual total. For defenders, its 14/20 at +/- 4 pts. This suggests that for attackign players, all the stuff to do with passes, tackles etc boils down to a maximum spread of 8 extra points for the most creative mid vs the laziest striker.

Defenders show more variability, suggesting that they have more opportunity to rack up points through non-scoring contributions. There area also a couple of real freak results for defenders (Samba and Terry), suggesting that the odd load of unexpected boni are possible.

    Over and out.

Players can lose points too though, for shots off target etc. In general I agree though; it's all a bit too clinical.

But it doesn't seem so much like points, as fractions of points, compared to that wopping 15 pts for a goal.

Seems very simplistic, which is a shame.

It doesn't appear to reward anything that isn't already rewarded by the current scoring system, such as tackles, key passes, successful dribbles, which I had imagined would be taken into account.

Top work for figuring it out, but for my money it seems to be a wasted opportunity for fpl to create a good system for bonus points. I'd frankly prefer the anarchy and randomness of the old system.

Yep. the first season I played used this system and its awful. I've always prefered the man in the stand sytem for that reason. Sure you get some weird ones, but generally it picks out the key players controlling the game.

I'm really shocked how low the data spread is actually. Means that players like Silva will get absolutely nothing.

"2. Player's Performance per match - Players receive points for positive influences on a winning performance (shots, tackles, clearances, saves etc). Players have points taken away from their score for negative actions such as shots off target and yellow/red cards."

Disappointingly, this implies that a player won't receive points for positive infuences on the game unless his side wins. Seems naff.

Sorry, you're right I missed that. Agree that it isn't very sophisticated at all. Much prefer the old system, but to be fair I wasn't one of the people who didn't like it in the first place - maybe they will be happier.

It will be interesting to see how best to take advantage of the new scoring, but it seems like a striker heavy team might be the way to go - because of bonus points and because they seem to be better value than the expensive mids at this stage anyway.

B & B, I've done something similar, and it doesn't work. You have assigned much too high a value for goals. This is simply demonstrate by Berbatov's 5-for. The real value for goals is probably below 7, imo. Furthermore, you have not allowed for Player Performance points at all, and it is clear that players can earn at least 6 for that alone per game, probably more. Assists may be as high as 6. Clean sheets are more evenly spread, probably:

      striker - 1
      midfielder -2
      defender - 3
      golakeeper - 4

I think you may be right about appearances, and win appearances, although I am working on win appearances being half.

        On the contrary:

        5*15 = 75
        +9
        +9
        =93 pts

        He scored 98.

Can see assists at 6 and your values for clean sheets could be right. Very confident that goals are worth 15-16 pts though.

The PPI is just included in the win and appearance points for me. That's where my +/- 4 pt typical variance originates from. I'm not trying to work out how many points each tackle is worth, just the scale of it compared to goals assists and clean sheets.

But, he got an assist(Nani) - and you have again made no provision for PP, which he would have got a sackful, for this match.
Also, it is specifically stated: "which measures a player's all round contribution to the success of his team using six key indices", not 5.
          There was no clean sheet.

I am not in any way sure of this, and my current algorithm is as follows:

          1. Winning Performance - 5

          2. Player's Performance per match - from +7 to -5

          3. Appearances - 9

          4. Goals scored - 9

          5. Assists - 6

          6. Clean sheets: striker – 1, midfielder -2, defender – 3, goalkeeper – 4 - However, there may be 5 categories ...

Baines and Lampard are the two things I still need to resolve. I feel like if I go without them now it's going to require a big overhaul of my team to get one of them in. Baines is expensive for a defender but not for the points he gets, absolutely loved having him last season. And there's always a chance Lampard could explode, and right now he's not been a popular choice.

If Arteta steps up a bit from last season then Baines's value at £8.0m looks even less appealing. He will sneak penalties and free kicks off him...and (as has already been said 1000 time before) Everton always start slowly. Their fixtures aren't great either.

Lamps to score a penalty v Stoke - I am almost resigned to that distinct probability!

    Given, Al-Habsi
Ivanovic, Kompany, Hughes, Taylor S, Bramble
    Silva, N'Zogbia, Sessegnon, Taarabt, Moses
    Van Persie, Suarez, Zamora

    Notes/concerns:

    * Are FUL as sure of defensive returns under Jol? Should I swap Hughes for another rotation cheapie to free up money?
    * Think my midfield might be a bit weak after Silva & N'Zog
    * Need to check injury status of RVP & Zamora - who would be good replacements?

+1 I'm going to hang on to Taarabt for the moment just to see how it goes. I agree though Campbell is a great price if someone is looking for a cheaper forward (maybe for trying to afford RVP and Rooney or something like that.)

Taarbet has never done anything in the premier league as of yet.

        Graham Dorrans 2. Sinclair ditto.

Or Charlie Adam 2? Easy to be negative when you're not picking him.

Can't argue with the fixtures or price and the way Sinclair and Taarabt rotate.

Right! To those interested, I have done another spreadsheet just for the midfielders alone, including clean sheets, assists, goals AND EA weekly highs/lows. You may find it here:

Anyone considering having Grahem & DJ instead of Taarabt & Sinclair. Allows funds for a pretty tasty midfield.

          I hear ya.

Currently I have Rooney, DJ and Aguero. Rooney and DJ will probably still be there come GW1 but really unsure about Aguero. Especially with Tevez looking like he's staying, at least for now.

May end up going with RVP if he's fit or Bent.

Exactly, sometimes, people don't take into account how improtant fixtures are. They just say "You need 'player X' who is fixture proof'

I picked DJ when he had his run of good home fixtures at the end of last season and he scored in all most all of them.

    Al-Habsi Robinson
    Gibbs Hughes Kompany Simpson Bardsley
    Malouda Sessegnon O'Hara Sinclair Taarabt
    Rooney Bent Rodallega

I have 1 million to spend so which player(s) should I upgrade???

Gibbs or Rodellega. Arsenal will concede loads this season and Rodellega isnt consistant. Down grade Rodellega to someone like Holt or DJ and upgarde Gibbs to Hangeland. Then swap Hughes to Enrique.
