A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours†were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

Gone for Dudley Demi. Even though he's not prem proven, I'd rather Holt. He's such a lump it's difficult to see any Norwich goals not bouncing off him somehow. Plus there's the pens.

Would only be for the 1st three weeks.

Wigan are shite but they're still better than the 3 promoted teams coming up, who they face in the first 3 weeks. You can't ignore the fixtures. They kept a clean sheet against Villareal today and were unbeaten in pre-season.

I don't share this Wigan love for the opening games - no N'Zogbia makes them an even more vulnerable team and Blackpool (promoted team) weren't shy of sticking a few past them on the opening day last season.

The Swans should beat Wigan at the Liberty so you've got the order right for one week. I could see QPR getting something out of their game too.

Appreciate any advice on these 2 teams.

A.GK, Kenny, Given, DEF, Taylor(Swa), Kompany, A.Cole, Simpson, Salgado, MID, Lamps, Tarabat, Silva, Ruel Fox, Moses, FWD, Rooney, Graham, Carrol

    Or

B.GK, Kenny, Given, DEF, Taylor(Swa), Kompany, A.Cole, Simpson, Salgado, MID, Lamps, Silva, Nani, N Zog, Moses, FWD, DJ, Graham, Carrol

For A , If Suarez is fit I will put him in for Carrol and upgrade David(Ruel) Fox at Norwich to probably croft at Norwich. Salgado is in as he will play GW`s 1 and 3. I`m sure on the defence in both cases, have studied the fixtures and to and including GW 7

Big worry for me is how deep Rooney played today

Bradley Johnson might get on a few set pieces, he took some but not all at Leeds and I think I remember him scoring a free kick or two, probably Norwich will mostly stick to their established takers though

Does anyone know how transfers in affects price to the first round? Is Suarez likely to bounce closer to 10M with 400.000 having him in their teams, or won't transfers before PL start affect price at all?

I have Kenny, he rotates well with Given, is Given your other keeper? Many with Given have gone with Ruddy because he's cheaper but I'd advise against that but go into details at risk of sounding lime a broken record. Others have Al Habsi for the reason stated above.

Richards didn't look good today, he's the same prices Kompany but seems more likely to pick up cards and Kompany is less likely to be dropped, though both seem sure starters.

Ramsey kind of depends on Fabregas doesn't he? Either way Aresnals fixtures aren't great, hence not much love.

Walters seems to have been overlooked due the Sessegnon bandwagon, maybe one OOP punt is enough fir most people? Idk im going to look into him further myself

    Given (4 mil keeper)

    Baines, Kompany, Gabbidon

    Malouda, Silva(C), O'Hara, Moses

    Rooney(VC), Bent, Holt

    (Sinclair, Simpson, Bramble)

not trying to win anything in one week but this should at least keep me competitive while the fantasy darlings begin to reveal themselves. 3 defenders rotating nicely for 3rd defender spot. tentative plan is to do rooney/holt to suarez/odemwingie GW3.

no arsenal coverage-can get by for now

no VDV-scares the piss out of me

and yes id rather have baines than chelsea defender.

Am i ready? any glaring omissions?

FuzzyWarbles, bratty, good job. I think you've nailed it actually, mainly because I think I've nailed it too. However I've got Zogs and Lescott instead of Baines and Sinclair, as I'm doubling up on City until someone establishes themselves next to JT.

The thing I really like about it is the balance of prices throughout the team. Malouda and Silva, for example, effortlessly becomes VDV and Nani, if need be. That pleases me.

      I'd say ready.

amen my brother. i have baines fever. He could be the Baines of my existence, but hey, better Leighton never.

wantez nzogs but figured bent will hopefully fill the villa need enough. Sinclair is the least desirable front 8 option, not bad for a man on pens and free kicks.

1/2 hour late again responding. Gabbidon or Orr. seems gabbidon is favored in ownership. i think its hill, gorkss, gabbidon and orr right? My strategy of cheap 3rd defender rotation is no to think I would be showered in returns. Its a way to free up funds for the rest of my heavy hitters by only sacrificing one spot in essence. Im hoping i get a couple CS in the first 10 GWs, otherwise I expect the 2 point and occasional 1 point return.

Sorry, I made a mistake, I actually have 3 of the 11 listed, got it mixed up with my team from before. Here is my RMT

            Given/Moreira

            Malouda, Taarabt, Albrighton, Nani, Moses
            Saurez, RVP, Holt

Its not much different from everyone elses but what I've tried to do is 2 heavy hitters and 2 middle hitters with 1 low for both the defense and midfield and then 1 of each for the strikers. Gives me "C" options and its pretty easy to transfer or rotate someone if I need to as well.

      Hope that answers the question.

    RMT:
    Given/Al-Habsi
    Kompany/Rafael/Hughes/Simpson/Bardsley
    Malouda/Nani/N’Zogbia/Moses/Dyer
    RVP/Holt/Suarez

I was planning to take out RVP and Rafael.Who should I replace RVP with or should I stick with him? Who do you think will be United's regular right-back? Great website here lads!

    Cleverley good, Welbeck bad

Good entertainment today. Think United will rack up a number of huge victories against the smaller teams with this system.

        Don't know yet CT(?)

Probably Rooney to be safe but any of Young, Nani and Valencia could be great picks if one of the others are injured or out of form/favour

Won't be going for any punts of that team as I don't rate Anderson and think the others are too risky in different ways

Garg, Anderson was class today. As was Welbeck.

Anderson was all right, Welbeck was bad. Not Premier League class on his first touch. Might improve with age I suppose.

Yeah it was a rerun, I guess some ABU intern edited away all Welbeck's great moves and replaced them with clips of him being really close to falling over.

          Yep CT. 8)

I've got Rooney at the moment, but Young or Nani for 2m less is tempting.

          You weren't joking?

"Think United will rack up a number of huge victories against the smaller teams with this system."

Sorry, but what about the bigger teams? I really did think this was humorous.... it really must be time for bed!

So you think they'll go out and destroy the big teams at ease now after claiming this last minute victory against City in a friendlyish game I presume?

No. Not at all. I am not a Manu fan and assumed you had intimated that Man U could "rack up a number of huge victories against the smaller teams with this system" and also assumed that you meant that Man U may not beat the "bigger" teams with "this system".

It's not a biggie, just a misunderstanding of humour, I think.

                Haha. I see.

I absolutely think they may beat the bigger teams with the formation they used today, especially with Hernandez in the mix too. Tipped United to win it this year too.

City vs United might very well be a great modern rivalry too - lovely.

I begrudgingly agree about Man U's possibilities as they did look dominating today. Liverpool will win it this year though!

I am really off to bed now! 🙂
