A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours” were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

    Any thoughts?

    Given
    Smalling, Kompany, Cole
    Nani(C), Silva(V), N'Zogbia, Moses
    Rooney, Carroll, DJ Campbell

    Ruddy, Gabbidon, Dyer, Caulker

I'm gambling on Smalling starting against WBA, but if he doesn't I've got Gabbidon on the bench who'll be home to BOL so not too bad.

After today and Fergie's guarantee that Nani will play against WBA I can't leave him out now (for Malouda)... but I may replace Rooney with RVP if he's fit to play. I don't fancy having Drogba or Torres.

I wouldn't go with Smalling personally and I'm a United fan. I made my argument a couple posts down if you're interested. You could downgrade Smalling to a 5m defender, that would save the 0.5m you need.

Hughes, Bardsley, Warnock are all good players at 5m.

Last thing you want is a non starting defender early doors. Utd's fixtures make it an even less appealing gamble. I'd get rid. Caulker has competition from the captain & vice captain too so that could end in tears

Rangel & Williams are the only definite starters, both are 4.5 though. My pick of the 4.0's is Taylor. He has competition from Tate but Taylor's the more natural left back and SHOULD be 1st choice. Seems safer than caulker for now, he may well be 1st choice this season but its too early to tell if he'll be preferred over monk/tate (captain/vice captain)

    Kompany, Hughes, Orr (Wilkinson, Simpson)
    Malouda, Silva, Downing, N'Zogbia, Moses
    Rooney, Carroll (Campbell)

Will swap Carroll for Suarez once he's match ready (unless Carroll rakes the points in the 1st week) & upgrade Campbell later if needed

Think I should upgrade Malouda to Lamps & downgrade N'Zog or Downing?

Smalling doesn't seem likely to get bonus points or assists. So I'd avoid him until De Gea settles in. First few fixtures are tricky and if he performs like today then you are looking at 2 points from Smalling.

Have to disagree a little bit here. I thought he looked ok on the ball but his first touch at times was horrible. He still looks more like a centre back then a right back. He did get into some good advanced positions but how many times did he get crosses in that looked like someone could get on the end of.

Yeah never see the Yaya appeal. Even last season his score was boosted by a couple huge games. Steady stream of 2/3 point returns matched his price tag. Definite no at 8.0

Yes, but what people fail to realize, depending on the area of the field all the way down to practice side-bets, cats could or couldn't take a free-kick. Looks like people need to start remembering which types of line-ups Yaya will be sitting advanced on. He pushed up later in the match when Mancini brought Barry along, and I also noticed Yaya creeping up when Milner started slowing down after a little knock. That being said don't think I'll be even considering Yaya (or Johnson...who I love) until I figure out which players are in and out of favor. Mancini is already killing me...thinking that he can throw in that workman defender line-up and hold a lead against speed like Welbeck & Nani. I like how Rooney let them do all the work. Would have been nice to see Aguero. But I know not playing him killed SAF more than us fans...

Might sound crazy but consider him a midfielder in the scheme of your own team. Because that is what he is on Arsenal's squad. Visualize their team, I can only remember them successfully advancing the ball on the left side. He'll be serviced about 10-15 balls per half, he'll put his defender on skates at least 5 of those times and total about 4-6 decent crosses a match. Now ask yourself, will Theo be doing that?

Many people give advice on here. Some of it is good, some is reasonable and some is bad.

And these things are always matters of opinion and luck is huge (in the short-term) so excellent advice can lead you into an unlucky situation.

    But beware of people who:
    (a) use the word "differential" before Christmas
    (b) complain that your team is "generic"
    (c) advise you not to "double-up" as though there is some sort of consensus that this is wrong
    (d) rattle on about "Arsenal(say) cover"

These people may (if you are lucky) know lots about fantasy football but you should be scared...very, very scared!!!

    Hey lads...
Here are 3 players i think may have snuck under alot of fantasy managers radars.. i have all 3 in my team and just wanted to see if there was anything i wast considering

    1) Sessegnon.. 1.8% ownership, has been the fulcrum of the sunderland midfield and should see plenty of assists and possible bonus this season

    2) Tchoyi ... listed as a midfielder has been playing in advanced positions under Roy, only 0.5 % ownership

    And of course
    3) Moses ... 1.7 % ownership, scored again taking his pre season tally to 5 goals from 5 games. I know many have him but im starting to see him as a longer term player in my team rather than a temporary one.

thanks in advance for your thoughts

Sessegnon is definitely a wait and see for me, especially as Sunderland have Liverpool and Chelsea in their first 4 games. Same with Tchoyi really. United then Chelsea?!

Can't see why you'd have either in your team right now although can't argue with Moses 🙂

Will only start if we get injuries or Samba leaves. Likely back four on Saturday is Salgado Samba Givet Olsson. If Samba goes he could play if Nelsen isn't fit and we don't get a replacement

Sessegnon I expect a big season from. Quality player, will be at a top 6 club a year from now. Moses a no brainer considering price, form & fixtures. Tchoyi I don't think will even start regularly, more of an impact sub imo.

Mate you have me interested in him now. 11 goals and 10 assists in 26 starts last year was impressive.
However I was talking to a Swansea fan on here earlier and he says he's not a nailed on starter and as you say Routledge came on for him at half time which is worrying

            I bookmarked this video :

            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Awo0l6lZ-mE

Yeah he is class but also a bit of a luxury player. End of last season he was starting the home games in the hole but the more industrious pratley was preferred in the away games. When he plays he's the main creator & a great finisher. I was expecting he'd be benches vs city but start the next 2 home games. Routledge is a bit of a curve ball though.
He's in atm but I may yet bottle it 🙂

Im starting off with Sinclair but Id love to get Dobbie and save the 1 million.
I think I'll just keep an eye on him at first but if he is starting games I'll put him in.
Fair play for spotting him aswell. I hope it works out if you do put him in your team.

I've never done particularly well at fantasy football, so I was hoping that some of you could reveal some of the flaws in my team, aside from injuries:

    Cech (Mignolet)

    Ivanovic, Zabaleta, Alcaraz, Distin (Hanley)

Jarvis, N'zogbia, Dempsey, Y Toure (Mceachren)

    Van Persie, Suarez (Sammon)

Thinking of playing Sammon instead of Distin for first game week. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Given Ruddy
    Cole Kompany Bramble DeLaet Simpson
    Nani Malouda N'Zog Sinclair Moses

Im not 100% sure but I think saw an article on here a week or so ago where steve bruce actually said that O'Shea,Turner,Bramble and Brown was his first choice backline. I think Bramble should be safe enough he's a favourite of Bruce's

and olson to alcaraz. great run of fixtures for wigan, if they don't get a cleansheet, i don't know when they will do 🙂

I'm hapy with my team now

                Moreira; given
                lescott;cole;kompany;alcaraz;bramble
                nzog;malouda;moses;honoolan;ohara
                rvp;carroll;djcambell

let's see if rvp is fit, and if suarez is playing since gw1 🙂

looks good, though Lescott might be subject to squad rotation and Ollson seems like a pretty obsolete choice.

Nothing wrong with olsson if he matches the fixtures you need him for. Consider shorey too

I don't see a fantastic return on Carroll in the first 2 gameweeks, which is why i have left him out.
It's really a matter of judging how well Aguero might start...

    Can I get a RMT?
    Al-Habsi/Ruddy
    Bardsley/Hughes/Kompany/Alcaraz/Gabidon
    Taarabt/Malouda/N'Zogbia/Adam/Moses
    Bent/Rooney/Campbell

I'm not to crazy about having three promoted players and three wigan players but my first RMT got too many injuries.

Upgrade one defender like Gabidon. Otherwise im not so hot on Adam since he does not have the chemistry like he had with Blackpool.

But he could prove me wrong and earn himself a spot on the National team!!
