A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours” were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

Look what I made! It's a neat little team, but also riskier because I can't change players around as easily as before. See what you think.

    Cech, Ruddy

    Kompany, Bramble, Alcaraz, Orr, Taylor

    Malouda, Nani, Silva, Sinclair, Moses

    Suarez, Holt, Bent

      Love the midfield.

Cech is going to get off to a great start but is he going to out score Hart over the season? I guess you can just change keepers when you wildcard if push comes to shove.

Nani will destroy teams at OT same as last season, as long as SAF gives him the match time.

Not much flexibility for weeks 2 & 3 with this squad. How much you got left over?

Bent is good because he can be switched out easily. With Villa's good opening fixtures, he'll be a good little punt.

        Considering:

        Given + Luiz
        or
        Cech + 4.5 def

I like the first combination a lot more long term, but will Luiz play?

I was just going to post and ask why you went for Cech over a Chelsea defender. I guess there's the answer.

What you could do is Given, Terry & swap Senderos out for Simpson. Simpson would rotate well with Bramble and I dont know if Senderos is guaranteed first team.

It would mean I'm rotating 3 4.0s with Ivanovic as my guarantee.

            Defense would be:

            Given, Ruddy
            Ivanovic, Kompany, Simpson, Orr, Taylor

That's the best I'd be able to do. No thanks.

Not feeling Bramble or Neil Taylor. I might be wrong, but I don't think Bent is Is what the people want GW1, he just isn't there yet cardio-wise. I imagine he'll give you a good 65 minutes and then a McLeish-like punt will have you pissed when Heskey or Delfouneso stink it up the rest of the way. Of course Holt is an unknown, but may be worth the risk. But to tell the truth, Kompany and the three amigos in the midfield are taking the toll on your D, no two ways about it.

Welbeck hasn't tickled your fancy yet? It's gonna be hard for SAF to justify putting Berbs or Owen in before him. I have Roonpig, and wasn't really feeling his Wesley Sneijder impression. He seems to be more working smarter than harder. Welbeck seems to be the guy up front that could be fixture-proof (outside of Rooney of PKs)lets see how those ankles and hammy's hold up...

      Not impressed with this

      1) too much on keepers -- ok cech will get clean sheets but no bonus and only a few save points , also not many penalties for him to try and save

      2) Average defence and with change in bonus system kompany will suffer , lescott much better bet as will score a few which will in turn get bonus points

3)Midfield , better , but i would prefer to see nogbia in instead of siclair (use money instead of on keeper)

      4) attack , i would go caroll instead of suarez , let suarez do all the pretty work , while caroll toe pokes them in for the goals and the bonus points
I would also lose bent , (if you get nzogbia , and go for someone else depending how much you have to spend.

If nasri and fab do go then i would forget about nzogbia and buy one of the cheap arsenal mids

        Thanks for the input.

I can't afford a lot of the changes you're recommending because of budget constraints but I see the idea.

        How about this:

        Given, Ruddy
        Hughes, Kompany, Bramble, Simpson, Orr
        Malouda, Nani, Silva, Sinclair, Moses
        Carroll, Holt, Drogba
        +0.5m

The core of Malouda, Silva, Sinclair, Moses, Holt stays. I have my reasons. It's the defense and other 3 slots that are subject to change.

Looks better , of course the midweek fixtures are going to tell us a lot more , as many on international duty , including likes of drogba.

My main issues are trying to fit in chelsea coverage, Have pencilled in drogba , but not totally happy about it. If i knew benyoun was going to play i would ditch drogba and put him in.

Like you im hving to rearange due to Nani . Hes clearly in top form and we already know he starting , which was the big doubt about him . Nani in form is too good to ignore imo

Not so fast, I think defenders like Assou-Ekotto will score the BP's off of crosses, penetrating strikes, and set-pieces while CB's will only have set-pieces to put headers on goal...not over...not just wide of the post. This is going to force people who preach the bible of 'nailed-on defenders' to take gambles outside of boring position defenders, unless they block tons of shots.

The yaya v silva debate just gets more and more complicated. First half yesterday yaya played pretty much as a defensive midfielder. Silva looked dangerous and took alot of set pieces but never looks like scoring. When city went to 1 up front yaya played further up the field than silva and was more direct.
In conclusion, i’m going for neither. I’m worried about yaya being utilised as a dm and silva won’t score enough goals to justify a 9.5m pricetag

I'm with you. I was pretty keen on Yaya but the way things are shaping up with City's glut of strikers, it looks like he will be relegated to his own half most of the time, and he might as well be on the bench in that case. Silva is a trickier prospect, but for now I think there are safer bets around that price range.

Silva is almost in the same price bracket as vdv, nani and malouda and for that kind of money he just doesn't offer enough. If it wasn't for that first fixture silva would never have even been on my radar.

I may just go w/ Adam Johnson, hell he will get more opportunities in his 35-55 minutes of play than either of them will. Besides, he's the short track bully of the mid-field.

Everybody is going for Silva and I just don't see the same value as those people. I'd much rather have Nasri if fit. I can see Downing and N'Zogbia outscoring him this year too.

May be if Mancini plays 1 striker such as Dzeko and then plays Silva and Aguero playing off him, he'd be worth it.

    madness?

    schwarzer/given
    warnock/lescott/delaet/bardsley/staylor
    downing/benayoun/moses/silva/sessegnon
    rooney/gervinho/zamora

benayoun is my chelsea cover, which is risky, i know. but it gives me attacking cover for united, chelsea, city, arsenal and liverpool, while also providing some opportunities for price rises from the likes of zamora, moses and sess, who have strong points potential at lower price. defenders are ALL chosen for their attacking potential, with de laet the only question mark.

Like it. Good defence except for Warnock. I'd downgrade Given and turn Warnock into Collins or Dunne. Gervinho could be a decent punt. The only thing i'd say is you'll probably want a Chelsea attacker who you'd be confident to captain in GW 2 and 3 and I wouldn't be too confident captaining Benayoun.

Since everyone is restructuring their teams to get Nani in, which I'm sure is based on extensive research, rather than just being a knee-jerk reaction to yesterday's game, I'd be interested to know if anyone has any stats on:

    (a) his points/goals away from home in previous seasons
    (b) his points/goals against the bigger teams at home in previous seasons

No doubt he has the potential to high scorely, but will fixtures that read wba TOT ARS bol CHE stk allow him to do so?

Yep I made that point too on the last page. I'd never feel good captaining him away. As for playing the big teams he certainly has a great record against Arsenal. With a player like Nani though he's a bit up and down so it's frightening not to have him while he's running hot.

The thing is I don't think those fixtures are so bad for the best team in the league. The tougher games are at home and I fancy utd to score 2 in each of them. Those fixtures might look tough if we were talking about stoke having them but this is utd.

agree with you in a way and I don't like putting him as captain as Fergie enjoys dropping him when I most expect him to play. When he plays though he's the best scorer in FPL. City aren't a weak team but he soon managed 2 against them.

not at all. All this jibber jabber about how lescott will score more and get bonus points because he scores.

I put this to the FFS community and correct me if im wrong:

      1. Just because a defender scores will not mean his PPI index manages to get better than everyone else on the park

      2. Yes, Lescott has more attacking prowess but defenders are defenders and who knows... he may only score once more for the year :s

      3. Kompany is 0.5 cheaper which can be invested up the park (as kompany and lescott will score similar points anyway).

      Thats my take
