A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours†were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

Putting some polish on my team, any help would be greatly appreciated

    a) RVP / Sessegnon - Costs 18.5
    b) Carroll / Silva - Costs 19.5
    c) Carroll / Nani - Costs 20.0 (Additionally would have to
    downgrade Al Hasbi -> Ruddy)

So far i'm thinking getting Carroll and Silva, Silva has an easier first 3 weeks then Nani, after that I'll then probably trade Silva to Nani.

Depends on the state of your team(injuries/suspensions), double gameweeks(or cancellations due to waether) and your position in your league.

Most will WC during a 2 week internation break to maximize price increases/drops.

I did not see first half, but Lescott scored. He is 0,5m more expensive than Kompany though.

At the end of the day it's impossible to pick all the players that will score and at 6mill BK will still pick up some decent 6pts hall from Clean sheets.

Drogba (starts) and Dzeko (starts and ff reliability) would concern me. I would avoid CHS in the first game and look to bring them in for the fixture run from week 2 onwards.

Agreed about Luiz, a good way in to the CHS defence but monitor first.

Enrique is poor ff-wise and you could save .5 with Sendoros over Hughes.

      Best of luck 😉

Morning Jaf. I see no good prospects in United's defence. I think after GW 4 when Rio inevitably gets injured, would be the perfect time to bring Smalling in. He looked great yesterday and should get more starts than last season, but still a rotation risk. Right back is too risky in terms of rotation aswell so don't go there.

In the midfield, i think if we don't buy a midfielder then Anderson would be worth a punt. The opening fixtures are just so awkward that you can bet your bottom dollar, Sir Alex will rotate. We have so many options in attack that he can choose from. However the one constant will be Rooney and that's why with United's tricky opening fixtures, i'm only going with him and ignoring the Nani love until our fixtures are better

            Hey thanks fella 😛

Yes, I'm not going anywhere near the Utd defence.

Anderson: he's in my team if he gets regular starts.

Ignoring Nani? Not many Utd fans will be doing that I suspect but I think the fix have to improve first.

I'll get Roo if RVP drops out.

I was mightly impressed with his performace yesterday but when i have Malouda and Silva in midfield with their better fixtures and Rooney for United, i'm in no rush to sabotage my team for Nani 😉

I know that Ivanovic is doubtful for this week, but when he's fit do you think he'll be 100% first choice?

I can see him scoring tonnes this year. He's a full back who makes plenty of crosses, which will help him with this years bonus points and he's also dangerous from set pieces. Considering downgrading Cashley to him if it turns out he's fit.

been advised to choose collins/dunne over warnock...

what's the reasoning? warnock looks nailed on at left back, and will get the same clean sheet points. the only difference then is whether i'm getting attacking points from warnock's crosses (which, with bent in front of goal, could mean a fair few headed goals) or from goals scored by collins/dunne from set pieces. given the ffs analysis of the new bp system, it seems that dunne/collins won't be picking up any more bps than warnock unless they actually score well in a game.

with charlie nz now on the left wing, surely that will create more opportunities for warnock to launch crosses into the box as defenders prioritize closing charlie down, no?

i guess it comes down to whether we think a player launching crosses into bent will gather more attacking points than a center half coming up for set pieces.

having finished that thought exercise, i'm going back to my plan to have warnock.

To be honest, i can see Branislav starting CB and Alex and Luiz both sitting out early. Neither have had much of a pre-season and I can see Alex on the outer once Luiz and Ivanovic are both fit.

No if all chealsea defenders are fit the rotations will go as follow:

          #1: ACole-Terry-Luiz-Ivan
          subs will go accordingly:
          Bosingwa in for Ivan
          Alex in for Terry/Luiz

Ya well going along the new bonus points system, i doubt defenders are worth investing in outside the constant assisters like baines or cole. Otherwise, i think villa will be up there with CS this season, and im most likely gunna be playing 3 Def all season. With that said, lamps is predicted to be the highest scorer this season if he stays fit, and has showed well in pre season, so im not too worried about defence atm. 🙂

Why does the odd (speculative) bonus point mean defenders aren't worth investing in? Surely as always cs and attacking potential are the only factors worth considering when picking defenders

cashley to ivanovic, shawcross to cahill/samba/jags depending on who you prefer.
nani to malouda-dont mind todays hype over him, you have utd cover with roonpig.
MAKE SURE U CHANGE SUAREZ TO CARROLL********_IMPORTANT
lastly, make sure Moses is in ur starting 11 for gw1 bcuz im 99% sure hell score or bring in big pts! (4 goals pre season)

How did you work out that 99% on Moses? lol

Why would you have Cahill in defense when Bolton's first 9 weeks must make all of their fans want to give up on life. Ivanovic is injured. I'd rather have Nani over Malouda anyway regardless of whether he's cheaper. I'm keeping an eye out over the Suarez thing. I'm sure my team will change again.

I fancy Shawcross this season. Huth at rb, Woody and Shawcross in the middle. I can see clean sheets galore this season for Stoke at home.

All input is appreciated though. If we all chose the same players it would be boring right?

Moses netted 4 times in 6 pre season games- seems to be the go-to man for wigan now. Could be in the making of our next charlie adam 🙂 Considering how his fixtures look i would bet hes gunna be in the top 10 mids up until gw3 at least

I agree he has to be in te squad and I will play him first game because of the fixture but as far as it goes so far, he's my reserve midfielder and will rotate with Holt depending on fixtures.

Let's wait until loads of players get injured on international duty and then we'll decide lol.

I'd say Carrol just because he is the only solid attacking option for Liverpool until Suarez is playing and also because of there midfields high rotation risk, where as Villa have 2 solid midfield options with N'Zogs and Albrighton.

      Liverpool = Striker
      Villa = Midfield

But thats just my way of looking at it.

Cheers fir thoughts, but think Hangeland being 'a waste of money' is a little far; he was second highest scoring def last year, always has goal threats and has a nice opening 3-4 games, which at that point may then get changed. Do agree somewhat about Bent, but would rather Suarez over Carroll but concerns over him starting gameweek 1.
