A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours†were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

Im reading some people here saying that dont get Nani. But he seems one of the few top guns who is gonna start and is not injured. And Tottenham and Arsenal dont have good defenses soo at least to start with he should be good.
    My current team:
    DeGea, 4mil keeper(undecided)
    Kompany, Senderos, Bosingwa, Simpson(bench), Gabbidon(bench)
    Malouda, Benayoun, Nani, Moses, Silva
    Rooney(C), Holt, Lita(bench
    1,5mil in the bank
I know Bosingwa and Senderos and Lita are ?marks, but thats what the 1,5mil is for. First I wanted to go for 2 good strikers, but there are no quarantees at chelsea or man city, Persie is kind of injured and Arsenal look crap.
Any suggestions what I should use the 1,5 mil instead. Or is my team be ok?

BENAYOUN is the biggest ????-downggrade him and upgrade holt to carroll/bent. I still dont think nani is worth 10- he will still sharing pts with young-regardless of todays performance. Your team is VERY risky, but its ultimately ur decision. If i were you i would change:
      Bosingwa to Samba/Jags/Cahill
      Benayoun to Ohara/Jarvis/Duff/Sess
      Holt to Bent/Carroll/Odem/Gyan
      Lita??????? ......????

Thanks for your input, but I wanna get big 3 defensive cover so I will look at a chelsea defender instead of Bosingwa( will decide on last day). And will take a punt on Benayoun. One of my thoughts was to get, Nani to Vukic and Lita to Bent or Carroll. And if Bosingwa actually looks like playing I can get Sinclair instead of Vukic.
My plan is to have 3 big risk big reward players to go in GW1 so if they fail at least I have a full team.

Ya, I'd be all over having 3 Chelsea players if I knew which striker was nailed on to start. Right now I have Malouda & A.Cole as well as Nani & Rooney. I know that Man U's fixtures arnt great but I think that they will score regardless of who or where they play.

      Murphy takes, pens, not Zamora.

Dempsey did fill in as a second striker at times, but also got goals from playing on the left.

Downing also plays left wing, so how is Dempsey any worse. Also, Jol will play more attacking football and Fulham have decent early fixtures.

      Bale out for Sessegnon/Taarabt.

      You need some Chelsea coverage.

You definitely need some ManC attacking coverage for GW1.

2 ManU players may be an overkill, considering their tough fixtures.

Aha, yeh it is. What's so bad about that?
Now I'm thinking of swapping either Bent for Drogba or Nani for Malouda? Changed Bale for Taarabt so got 1.5m left over. Want to try and get Silva in somewhere, maybe for N'Zogbia? So if I swap Malouda with Nani, that's 0.5m gone. Need to find an extra 1m for Silva, so maybe change Kompany to Enrique (almost certainly going to Liverpool).
        So this would give me

        Given (Ruddy)
        Hughes Enrique Cahill (Simpson) (Wilkinson)
        Malouda Taarabt Moses Silva
        Bent Rooney Carroll

Now im even more confused! Any more thoughts on this??

RVP likely not to start. What will you do if he doesnt?? Is JOhnson and Aguero strong enough to start the season?

Check out the Arsenal list on FPL. Nearly half the list is marked orange or red at the moment. Think it's way to early even to make guesses at the Arsenal line up..

    morning all
just wondering, for all those with Given are you playing him week 1 (ful)? if not who are you playing?

after much tweeking, Im now seriously thinking of just playing Al Habsi for the first three weeks and keeping Ruddy in reserve for week four. By then I will have a better idea what shape my team is in. And lets face it, I'll probably w/c in week four anyway.

They are comparisons between players nett positions las year(minus bonus), and the EA guesstimates(new system of bonus awards) for last year. One is detailed, and is just the midfield, the other covers all of the top hundred players

There is always one 'big name' player that nobody ever has at the start of the season and then everybody jumps on them

2 seasons ago it was Fabregas (after that Everton game)

    last season it was Nani

this season it will be Bale 🙂

I#'m trying to make sure I have one expensive player in each outfield position i.e.. 1 x Def, 1x Mid 1 x For, so that can do a straight swap rather than multiple transfers for whoever that form player turns out to be.

I think its a good thing.

I posted a RMT last week and I had Nani in it and about five different people told me to take him out and now after one game he is suddenly in every team on the site.

People are too easy to dismiss potentially good players by listening to the general consensus of the site

    Kompany - Cole - Jagielka - Bardsley - Alcarez

    N'Zogbia - Sessagnon - Taraabt - Nani - Silva

Bent - Holt - DJ Campbell

      like it
      GK- good
      Def- good
      mid-strong
att- downgrade bardsley or jag and upgrade to a 6.5 or 7 st.

Nani is a rotation risk, Rooney isnt so I believe he is worth the 12m despite what look like tough opening fixtures

roonpig scores in patches, much prefer the security of RVP if fit. roon will be playing behind someone, I was hoping he would be on top with young in behind.
