A brilliant Manchester derby in this afternoon’s Community Shield has set the tone for the upcoming season. Roberto Mancini’s side raced ahead in the first forty-five, heading into the interval two-up thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and a speculative long distance strike from Edin Dzeko that seemed to swerve as it flew past David De Gea. At the interval, City, with such a rock-solid defence, looked nailed-on to pick up the silverware, despite their opponent’s dominance in possession.

After the break, the “noisy neighbours” were soon silenced. Goals from Chris Smalling and Nani -following a brilliant passing team move- levelled matters just short of the hour mark as United’s attacking football proved relentless. With only seconds remaining, Nani sped away from the halfway line and capped a wonderful comeback by rounding Joe Hart to coolly slot home the winner.

In Fantasy terms, the game will no doubt spark a Nani bandwagon. The summer purchase of Ashley Young places question mark over the Portuguese winger’s game time in 2011/12 but there seems little doubt that Nani- last season’s top-scoring FPL- player- looks good for a place in United’s starting XI at West Brom next Sunday.

On the left, Ashley Young also looked the part and it’s worth noting he took his fair share of set-pieces; it was his delivery that led to Smalling grabbing United’s first. Young -like Nani- is priced at 10.0 but with Antonio Valencia not yet match fit, is likely to take his good form to the Hawthorns in gameweek 1.

Despite Javier Hernandez being sidelined with concussion, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Danny Welbeck as a strike partner for Wayne Rooney up front. His performances in tandem with the Mexican have shown Rooney thrives more with a pacy forward ahead of him, and Dimitar Berbatov was resultantly relegated to the bench. If Fergie continues along this line of thinking, the Bulgarian could well be a peripheral figure in 2011/12.

Chris Smalling started the game at right-back, suggesting he may offer cover in positions other than centre-half next season. Phil Jones was also played at right-back in United’s pre-season win over MLS Allstars, suggesting the likes of Rafael will have plenty competition for starts on the flank in 2011/12.

For City, Joleon Lescott carried on the goalscoring form that saw him score two games in his club’s final three league games last season. At 6.5, he’s 0.5 more than Vincent Kompany but his eye for goal may tempt Fantasy managers, particularly with Kolo Toure still serving a suspension.

Given their record of 18 clean sheets last term, City were surprisingly slack in the second half . Gael Clichy, on as a sub for Aleksander Kolarov, hardly covered himself in glory with an indecisiveness on the halfway line that led to United’s winner.

David Silva was the liveliest of City’s attacking players, always buzzing around and looking to pick up possession. Silva’s set-piece led to City’s opener and with a home game against Swansea the final match of game week 1, the Spaniard – priced at 9.5 in FPL- will surely see plenty Fantasy investment.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the availability of Carlos Tevez and with Sergio Aguero sitting out the match due to blistered feet, Fantasy managers were hoping for an impressive performance from the other City forwards on show. Mario Balotelli was never really in the game and priced at 9.0, would be a huge punt ahead of the game against Brendan Rodgers promoted side.

Edin Dzeko, playing as the lone forward, may have found the net but the goal was perhaps more of an error by David De Gea than a piece of clinical finishing. Dzeko, at 8.5, could see plenty investment if Roberto Mancini is unable to call upon the services of either Tevez or Aguero ahead of the game a week on Monday.

A stat more indicative of the nature of this game is each side’s total shots- United had 21 to City’s 8, a fairer reflection of the state of play, rather than the 3-2 scoreline.

I have carroll in my team but I keep thinking is he worth the 10.0m I paid for him. Would it maybe worth downgrading and investing in someone who is a more potent threat?

I think Nani's a level or two above Valencia now, so I don't have a problem with taking that at face value.

Could be a different story when CL games start coming in, though.

Sounds like he's looking for an excuse to drop him, but simply can't on current form. Still a bit worrying for us fantasy managers.

When United signed Ashley Young it reminded me of the '90s side with Giggs, Sharpe and Kanchelskis. Perhaps that's what SAF has in mind with Rooney up top and Nani playing off him against the likes of Barcelona? Valencia and Young are both disciplined in tracking back and offer pace on the break.

Despite the fact that Everton are traditionally slow starters and he offers nowhere near the same potential for returns as Baines, anyone fancy Distin for 5.5? If I'm not mistaken, I read in an earlier article that the new bonus points system would benefit him, and to me Everton's fixtures warrant him a place in my team. It's hard to fit Baines in with Kompany and A Cole.

they were flattered by the index coz he ddnt miss a game last season, so his total was high
what matters is bonus per game and his only chance for defenders to pick bonuses is through a 0-0 result due to the new system (assuming no goal/assist was scored by a def)

-ManU starting backline of Smalling, Rio, Vidic, Evra.
-Nani and AYoung starting, Valencia not even on the bench
      -Wellbeck starting
      -Dzeko starting and scoring

    15 spots on my team
    14 PL teams represented

    teams missing out :

Arsenal, Blackburn, Bolton, Fulham, Stoke, WBA

one team with 2 reps: ehh, Wigan

what does it all mean: hell if i know. i think its nearly impossible to get coverage from all the top clubs, always one will be risked w/o coverage. I guess i have decided the combination of question marks in arsenals midfield, the RVP fragility issues, and the fixtures tells me they are the safest team to not have representation.

I cant imagine a scenario where Im bringing in a rover all season. Sorry boys.

What bugs me is i support the Cottagers and they have some kind fixtures and I dont have any of it!!! I think I subconciously avoid them, i cant "double up" on emotional investment. I will wind up smashing something!!!!

Tottenham appear to be interested in Costa Rican winger Bryan Ruiz, currently playing in the Netherlands for FC Twente, according to a respectable Dutch website. If priced low, he might be an excellent FPL-prospect.

More chance of Tevez and Aguero playing than Suarez for instance but others don't seem to think so. 😛

If Tevez looks good in training and Aguero overcomes his injury they have every chance of playing. I can't recall Tevez coming off the bench last season so I think he'll either play or not play at all.

How are folks doing with their strikers? Players I rate regardless of price are Suarez, Rooney and RVP. I had Carroll and Bent in my side last year, but buying them this year feels like paying full RRP after the January sales.

At the budget end, I like Rodallega and Doyle. In fact, I can't see a better value player than Doyle in the entire game. He's completely flown under the radar in this year's RMT's despite missing half of last season and Wolves strengthening their starting 11 at the back and in midfield. The cherry on top is Wolves' home fixtures and fixtures in general.

Anyways, I'm looking at RVP or Rooney to start with Doyle, and a ~10m striker that can become Suarez once he's had his rest. What are people's thoughts on Gervinho? It was very obvious that Arsenal missed the pace of Walcott against Barcelona, and Gervinho is an upgrade on Walcott so will be pretty essential I would've thought?

I think he could be a great shout but not sure from the start? I had RVP/Rooney/Johnson (potneital Doyle/Holt etc but AJ to start I feel) - currently dropped RVP to see how he gets on in first few games. Rooney looke dup for it today and so influential. Have gone with Carroll at the moment - gives the Gervinho/Suarez option but just don't think Gervinho has the fix to justify a gamble from the start - that said, he could do very well and be a superb shout; but a gamble too far for me from the out.

Cheers doisneau, I was starting to wonder what had happened to the FFS community and its regulars. Perhaps I should dumb down my posts to "Striker for 7m?" 🙁

AJ is a fitness concern for me, and not on pens. I have to admit that Fulham's fixtures look great and I've been considering Riise but he's a bit of a stretch at 6m before I've seen him back playing in the PL.

Carroll is a good shout to get off and running against Sunderland. I may go with Downing so am not sure I want to double up. I'll mull it over. Thanks.

(the place has changed!) I wouldn't go Carroll and Downing but I would try and hold that 10m spot. I kind of resent paying that much for Carroll but it is only a marker until someone shines (hopefully Suarez). Bent maybe ?(I hate paying for him even more!).AJ is a gamble. But I think I should be able to get out of trouble if he fails to deliver -Holt/Graham/Doyle etc (have O'Hara at mo).

I agree and disagree with this.

Agree on Suarez, Rooney and RVP being fixture proof fantasy gems.

Disagree on Doyle and Rodallega. Rodallega has 3 nice fixtures but nothing else. He's not on set pieces, he shoots a lot without finding the net which counts against him with the new bonus system, and Wigan aren't exactly a prolific team. In fact, they're easily one of the worst in the division.

Doyle is at best a punt. He was expected to do well last year, but he barely delivered even when fit. There's also the question mark over his starting time considering Fletcher's emergence last season.

Gervinho is a terrible pick hands down. Would you buy Arshavin or Walcott if they were 9.0 strikers? He doesn't get the midfielder clean sheet points, the added point on goals, and he's playing as essentially a midfielder. He's also new to English football. Definitely one to avoid unless he somehow finds himself in a more potent position.

Agree that Gervinho is wait and see but I do think he could offer more than Walcott (whose delivery can be terrible) and Arshavin (wouldn't like him as a front man). So not a terrible pick hands down but a wait and see particularly if he gets a chance as the front man - walcott and arshavin won't.

Rodallega I have time fore but not to change the world with. Agree that Doyle is a bit of a punt - could do well but not sure. That said I'm going with AJ so maybe I haven't got a clue myself!

Don't mince your words there Camzy 😉

Wolves struggled to have any quality possession last year, and Doyle often cut an isolated figure up front. I'm expecting McCarthy to play Fletcher up alongside him and to receive better service from Hunt, O'Hara and Jarvis while Johnson shores up the back. But, yes, this game is all about opinions so while Doyle isn't likely to be in my team for the duration I'm happy to start with him.

Gervinho is more of a punt, I'll grant you that. Walcott is classed as a midfielder but often fills the hole vacated by RVP when he drops deep. With pace you play wide on the touchline, or on the shoulder of the defence and I think we'll see Gervinho mirroring Walcott on the left. He's a much better footballer though so I don't see why he won't be a reasonable pick (even as a forward) this season. I can certainly afford to wait and see before jumping though.

Wigan will struggle - I agree. With Moses at 5m that's plenty of Wigan coverage for me.

      Spot on.

      Rooney/RVP
      +
10m striker (Bent/Carroll) until Suarez is fit
      +
Cheap striker: Doyle or Holt are my favourites here.

= the way to go. Allows the rest of the side to have a nice balance.

PS. I resent getting Carroll but you know he's going to score.
