The second instalment in our series of Members articles looking at Fantasy consistency sees defenders come under the microscope. Aiming to highlight those players who week-in, week-out offer solid returns, we’ve taken a larger sample size than the previous Goalkeepers article and analysed the top twelve in terms of points per game in 2010/11.

Although there are four Chelsea players here -in addition to two from Man City – the Blues defenders most definitely vary in average returns and consistency. Who’d have thought, after all, that Ashley Cole was the least reliable Fantasy pick of our featured quartet last season?

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

        i think bj is wrong

you should expect it to increase your variance from week to week but if you can stand the pain of the bad weeks and think they are good picks in the long run you should go for it

man city had 18 clean sheets last season anyway. if u have 2 of them, u might as well have guaranteed at least 30+ clean sheets, plus Lescott can score goals.

It is a pain when they have a tough fixture (Old Trafford?) and you want to put both on the subs bench - makes your choices very tight.

Waaaay too weak. You need two nailed on starters and then three fluffy occasional boys who you can rotate.

I think these analysing consistency articles are the worst garbage i've seen for a long time:

    (a) calculate points per game last season...adjust to what you expect this season
    (b) add up games started last season...adjust to what you expect this season
    (c) multiply (a) and (b)

    everything else is muddled fluff!!!

Good suggestion, but the early fixtures of Liverpool and United are pretty lousy.

Fixtures are so important. Remember Chelsea's crazily good start last year? Was just fueled by fixtures. And Villa's dream run near the end was also fueled by easybeats.

In the long run I think Rooney and Carroll look good, but not for the first 5-6 gameweeks.

I must confess finding a captain for GW1 was tricky, so I went with Taarabt.

RVP is a doubt, I didn't realise Bent was. I can't see Bent not playing, although RVP might not. I'm happy to have him benched if he does miss the first week or two.

I just remember stacks of injury doubts at the start of last season, and they all ended up playing - its a bit of a phony war!

Not a Swans fan, but from what I can gather Rangel and Williams are likely starters, probably Taylor and Tate as well in the first week. Caulker sat out the last friendly with an injury of some sort, not sure how severe.
Rangel is in my team... very attacking from the sounds of it.

What are people's thoughts on when to wildcard?

I think the sweet spot is after GW 2/3. Because we know so little in pre-season, this is when the available fantasy knowledge will have improved more dramatically than at any other point in the season - form becomes much clearer, transfer window closes, selection doubts are resolved etc. It follows that a wildcard is likely to improve your team more than at any other point in the season. It is also the best time for increasing team value as most players are still active, and the wildcard gives you total trading freedom for that week.

Gut instinct will tell you when to play it typically when you know there are at least four players that need to be changed.

Need to give it a few weeks to allow you to see which players ff-wise are the ones to bring in.

Agreed, the criteria should always be how many transfers you are behind where you'd like to be, rather than how far behind you are in your mini-league etc.

Play your wildcard when you see fit. There are different theories on this... some say play early (intl window) to cash in on price rises.

Others say keep for run in and... BLITZ your rivals for last 6 game run in.

Me, well I say.. play whats in front of you 😉

Well that's the point, you don't want to get left behind in that sense. You always want to own a player while he rises, in fact you need a very good reason not to own a player who's going through more than one price rise in succession.

Depends, if your playing for rank or a mini league (£ss!) title.

Last 2 years I have been the latter won both, but doesnt always hinder your rank either i was 432nd year 1 😀 !

No ARS? Must have been hard to leave a RVP/Gervinho/Nasri out.

Defence is a little too expensive and unecessary for my tastes. As a result, you end up with budgitos in midpark.

I'd steer clear of CHS for the first week until we know a little more on playing plans.

B looks very good to me. Perhaps you can lose Rodallega for Holt/DJ/A Johnso and then you will have 1 mil in bank which makes Torres an option for week 2 (as with 0.5 you can only choose Drogba week2)

Dempsey will be good, but for 8.5mil may not be worth it. EG. I'd expect Nzog to outscore him this season.
