The second instalment in our series of Members articles looking at Fantasy consistency sees defenders come under the microscope. Aiming to highlight those players who week-in, week-out offer solid returns, we’ve taken a larger sample size than the previous Goalkeepers article and analysed the top twelve in terms of points per game in 2010/11.

Although there are four Chelsea players here -in addition to two from Man City – the Blues defenders most definitely vary in average returns and consistency. Who’d have thought, after all, that Ashley Cole was the least reliable Fantasy pick of our featured quartet last season?

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Mentioned this last night, but anyone, esp know much more about Formica. Basic research shows he seems to be a rising star and I'm considering the punt given Blackburn'd decent fixtures.

Anyone (Blackburn fans?) know of Kean plans to start him?.. I notice he played the full game in the recent Kilmarnock friendly..

    Any insight much appreciated.

Two big defenders (Ivanovic, Kompany) and two big mids (Malouda, Nani)and two big strikers (RVP, Suarez) - all barring injuries of course, is my tactic I've decided.

Was sorely tempted with Baines also in defence but I think having two big hitters in each area allows you the flexibility in terms of price to make transfers early on without having to re-do your whole team.

Not saying this is the correct way, but seems sensible.

I think what we the police need to do, is figure out where the next target will be, and make a trap.

And not sure why they're not using a ton of police dogs, they'll chase the crims down for sure.

if they had the numbers they could trap large crowds by covering all exits. Can see it kicking off massively today. The army should get involved, water cannons, plastic bulletts. Thye need to be a lot firmer with them..

Yep. I reckon the technique using armoured cars could be useful, but a couple of water cannons and some tear gas could be useful.

To be honest, they don't need to block entire streets, they just need to bully them enough to run, and give them easy exits, forcing them into an area where they CAN trap them. ust funnel them like buffalo into one long street, and have police move in from the other end. Pincer movement I suppose you'd call it.

And by the by, a quick scan of the ticker, and Tottenham, Liverpool and Man City look like the big clubs which might be cancelled if violence continues.

Does anyone know if Vuckic is likely to start regularly for Newcastle? Is Atilla around?

I've just spotted he's on at 4.5. He looks like the best option at that price if he's going to play.

I don't remember defenders ever getting many bonus points... BP Allocation is a terrible reason not to get a defender. Also if, for e.g., Baines scores... He'll most likely get the BPs...

      Silly article!

They fail to mention the 5 assists he got.

4 goals and 5 assists is a good return. Add that to his performance in the World Cup and then Copa....the guy is a world class player who has already proven he can adapt to the premiership. I don;t think the latter was in any doubt given his strength and size.

I think he will start the season, they will want to start off well against Sunderland.

(I also refuse to take seriously any article which mentions Afonso Alves!)

Big question, I've been thinking a lot about: who will Chelsea be playing at right back?

Both Ferreira and Bosingwa have been playing right back in the pre season friendlies. Last match they got a half each - Ferreira starting.

Of course he could be playing Ivanovic at right back, but I don't think he'll do that.

What do you guys think? Ferreira and Bosingwa are bargains at 5.0 and 5.5 ...

    Appreciate your thoughts!

My tactic is to start with Ivanovic, who I really hope cements a place as he would by dynamite. At 7m, I can easily 'downgrade' to Bosw/Luiz/Alex/Ferr depending on who gets starts.

Harder to find the money to upgrade I think.

No interest in Cole for me this year. I think whoever cements a place will be better value, esp since Ivan, Luiz and Alex all come with a strong attacking threat too.

I agree on Cole. Not worth the money imo.

And I agree on your downgrading thought. I'm pretty sure Ivan will play - I just think he'll play centre back. I think that the new Portuguese manager will favour one of the Portuguese players.

And I think that Bosingwa is a very good right back. Before he got severely injured, he was one of the best right back in PL imo...

Bosingwa would indeed be a bargain if he cements RB. I think whatever happens, we're set for a bargain in Chelsea defence. They have some cracking attacking defenders.

Without sounding harsh, would make our lives easier if one of them got injured and reduced his options. Ouch, I'm evil.

New to fantasy football and posted a team yesterday that wasnt well received so here is another attempt!
Please could you let me know what you think?
    Given Ruddy
Kompany, Luiz, Lescott (De Laet, Senderos)
    N'Zogbia, Taarabt, Sessegnon, Moses (Ferguson)
    Rooney, Van Persie, Carroll
I know Ferguson won't play but needed the money and think maybe my midfield is a little light, but wanted the massive 3 up front! Bad idea?

not a bad team at all mate. Heavily reliant on front 3. Midfield is a bit light. Maybe swap one big forward for a big midfielder.

      Silva maybe?

Thanks, had Silva before!!! Silva is 3 million more than Taarabt (who i dont really want or trust to play consistently) so need to lose 3 million from my strikers if that is going to happen. Who should I lose from up front to gain that 3 mill and who do you think I should swap them to?

maybe drop RVP if he's not fit for first game. he's at 12m so you'd have 9m on spend on a striker.

maybe odemwingie or take a punt on gervinho?

see link for strikers below 9m and their predicted returns for first 10 gameweeks.

I wouldn't pick two City defenders. I'd go for Lescott because of his goalscoring ability.
Luiz is doubtful due to injury and didn't play in the last pre season match, so I don't think he'll start.

I wouldn't pick three that expensive attackers. I'd keep RVP or Carroll and get rid of Rooney. Man Utd's first fixtures of the season aren't that promising.

For the money saved up front I'd buy Silva and Malouda. Both have good game schedules and Silva seemed sharp in the Community Shield IMO. As did Nani. I'd include him too ...

          Insanely difficult this year!

          My midfield and attack:

          Nani-Taarabt-Malouda-Silva-Moses

          Zamora-Holt-Dzeko

After GW1 I'll rearrange the team and perhaps sell one of my midfielders and buy a more expensive attacker. Actually I have a feeling for Torres ... I reckon that Suarez will have a super season but I'm not sure he will start in GW1 due to Copa America ...
