After a long anxious summer away, our regular scan of the fixture list makes a return.

If you’re new to these parts or if perhaps all the sun and sangria have gone to your head, then, in a nutshell, this regular Monday article examines the fixtures and presents our view on those teams with favourable runs or absolute horror shows. We even tease you with a few player recommendations.

Introductions over then, let’s fill our boots with the opening gameweeks.

The Highs…

QPR

Very few are backing QPR to make an impact on their return to the top flight. Neil Warnock’s men however have one big factor in their favour – the opening set of fixtures could hardly have fallen better for them.

Our “Next Six Fixture Ticker” (in your sidebar) displays a sea of blue with no real intimidating opponent on the horizon; there’s room for a degree of confidence in Rangers, then.

While the purse strings have limited Warnock’s summer pickings to humble captures such as Jay Bothroyd, Danny Gabbidon and DJ Campbell, by sealing the future of the Adel Taarabt, Rangers have assured at least some interest from Fantasy managers this season. Taarabt, with set-piece dominance and goals and assists dripping from him, will surely tempt early investment for what is an undeniably favourable opening to the season.

Aston Villa

While both Ashley Young and Stewart Downing have departed, Villa have drafted in Fantasy favourite Charles N’Zogbia to fill the void and turn the heads of Fantasy managers. Darren Bent remains the key figure on the teamsheet, however, and it’s his prospects over the opening spell of the season that look the most intriguing.

Certainly the fixture list suggests that Bent and Villa could start strongly. Indeed, in the mid-term Villa have good fixtures for a considerable time and could prove strong value for several months.

While a trip to the Cottage is far from easy on opening day, Villa’s upcoming encounters with Blackburn, Wolves and Newcastle -all notoriously bad travellers- in the opening five gameweeks should give Alex McLeish every chance of winning over the Villa faithful. Bent, N’Zogbia and a supporting cast that could include a back four reinforced by the arrival of Shay Given and McLeish’s own stoic defensive outlook, all look tempting.

Fulham

Martin Jol is another manager faced with winning over a new set of fans – like McLeish, though, he has been given an relatively easy ride in the opening month.

The opener with Villa looks winnable, as does the second home clash with Blackburn in Gameweek 4. Sandwiched in between Fulham have trips to Wolves and Newcastle – stubborn opponents but fixtures that are amongst the best away games in the division.

While Brede Hangeland, John Arne Riise and Clint Dempsey (6.5, 6.0 and 8.5 in the FPL) have been given fairly hefty price tags, there is still value in Jols’s squad that could come to fruition early on.

Bobby Zamora and Aaron Hughes offer assured mid-price cover at both ends of the field with Damien Duff offering midfield promise for those who baulk at the prospect of shelling out for Dempsey’s goal threat.

Chelsea

Chelsea had the most astounding of opening fixtures last season and duly delivered major Fantasy hauls with Florent Malouda and Didider Drogba both ablaze. While things don’t fall quite so nicely for them this time around, they’re still presented with three very favourable Stamford Bridge encounters which appear to offer strong returns all round.

West Brom, Norwich and Swansea are the first three opponents facing Andre Villas-Boas in front of the Chelsea supporters. Those matches balance out a couple of testing away trips – the opener at Stoke and the Gameweek 5 visit to Old Trafford.

Frank Lampard has the pedigree to provide but Fantasy managers are still showing caution given his changing role in the Chelsea midfield. Malouda perhaps offers greater potential – particularly given that his start should be more assured with pre-season starlet Daniel Sturridge sidelined through suspension for the first three fixtures.

Also Consider…

Newcastle – there’s a whole lot going on at Newcastle that may cause you to err on the side of caution – but the fixtures fall nicely with a strong run to follow the opener against Arsenal.

Everton – the Premier League’s most famous false starters are handed a rather peachy spell between Gameweek’s 2-5 including some strong Goodison fixtures.

Wigan – Forget last year’s Mauro Boselli debacle and the day one spanking to Blackpool – take a look at the first three games and think again.

The Lows…

Man United

United’s impressive comeback in yesterday’s Community Shield will doubtless see their Fantasy assets earn renewed consideration – Nani in particular. The fixture list certainly offers food for thought however, with Alex Ferguson handed an evil opening to the season that will immediately test the credentials.

A trip to the Hawthorns to meet a Baggies side masterminded by the canny Roy Hodgson isn’t easy – home games against Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea then follow, with a tricky encounter at the Reebok in between. Clean sheets look unlikely, perhaps, but such opponents may just draw the sting from United’s attacking players, providing every incentive for Wayne Rooney, Nani and company to produce the kind of goalscoring display shown at Wembley on Sunday.

Bolton

There is an early cloud of concern gathered over the Reebok stadium. The Trotters have lost two of last season’s most potent goal threats – Daniel Sturridge and Johan Elmander – whilst they’ve been cruelly robbed of Chung Yong-Lee’s trickery by a pre-season leg-break.

Owen Coyle could do with a friendly fixture list to start off with, then, but he’s unfortunately been handed an evil array of opponents. Fixtures against four of last year’s top five in their opening spell will surely postpone any initial Fantasy interest in the Trotters squad.

Stoke

Stoke City’s strength is at the Britannia – that’s where they often seal the precious points that push them up amongst the higher echelons of the table. Sadly for Tony Pulis’ side, their opening set of fixtures hands them three of the most difficult home games over the first five Gamweeks. Chelsea get matters rolling on Sunday, with Liverpool and United also due at the Britannia by the end of September. Trips to Norwich, West Brom and Sunderland could offer returns but Fantasy managers need to be wary of Stoke’s away form – they’ve previously struggled badly for returns on the road.

Be Wary of…

Swansea – three “mission impossible” away trips balance out a set of Liberty Stadium clashes to provide a topsy-turvy start to life in the Premier League.

Tottenham – United, City, Liverpool and Arsenal all lie in wait in the opening six Gameweeks. Spurs will likely need to capitalise on away trips to Wolves and Wigan if they are to keep in touch with the top six early on.

    Hmmm. Idea:

What if all the regulars simply start posting on the previous post at all times. That way, the newbies flood the newest post with RMTs, and we get back to about 10 pages a day, rather than 15 in a couple of hours.

I don't particularly like these ideas to get rid, or seperate the noobs from the regulars. I can see peoples frustrations but there's already some regular posters who are new and posting good stuff, or are happy with a bit of banter. Of course there's some tossers as well but that's how life goes.

I'm sure the boards will clear up a bit once the season starts and people start to lose interest

RE: Hugo Rodallega- He played in 3 of Colombia's 4 Cope America games and was a sub in each, playing a total of about 130-140 minutes. The last game he played in was on July 16.
Analysis: He didn't play that much in CA, but he was training, which means his fitness should have been good to that point. Give him a two week break and he could have been training again last week.
Will he play? I think Martinez would like to start strong. That said, he may see if the Latics can handle Norwich without using Roda, but would surely have him on the bench if needed.

There, my un-expert answer to my own query 30 minutes ago.

with 3 4.0 defenders there, you need a guaranteed everyweek option, so not luiz. I personally dont like to double up on defenders, not saying it doesnt work, but i cant say C.
Id actually consider Nani-malouda GW2 and have 6.0 to spend. So you could do C but swap out nani instead of silva.

    Given - Kenny

Dunne - Lescott - Senderos - De Laet - Brown

    N'zog - Nani - Silva - Sessegnon - Moses

    Drogba - Holt - Carrol

    £1 in the bank.

Before GW2 I will transfer Nani--> Malouda in order to get Chelsea-cover for their walkover-hometrashing against WBA and Norwich.

Only messing with ya. Goalies are grand, defence is alright but not too sure about Bosingwa or Young (I imagine you're starting them?). Midfield is grand. Forward line is good too although keep in mind RVP might not be playing but at least you'll have the funds to bring in Drogba or someone then.

Unlikely start to the season is a RMT.....I have 2m in the Bank but can't find anywhere decent to put it given my focus on Villa, QPR, Fulham and Chelsea as early seasons easy starters...

    Al Habsi(Given)

    Alex Hughes Lescott (Dunne Shittu)
    Taraabt Dempsey Lamps YaYa (Tiote)
    Rodallega Bent A.Johnson

Most obvious is to upgrade a midefielder or forward (Dempsey - Nani or Bent - Torres) but I do not like Manu fixtures and is Torres going to start/deliver.

    Any suggestions welcome

I'm following a similar path, in terms of considering fixtures. I went with Silva over YaYa and have Rooney for GW 1, then transferring him out for Bent in GW2. I just think Villa/Fulham could be tight, with few points available. I've gone for a Cole as he and Terry are they only Chelasea def's I know will start. Love Lamps in there as I have him too. Will be interesting to see how that one pans out. Good luck!

Thanks guys......changed whole team for about the 10th time in as many days and went for more balance and stronger focus on Villa/Chelsea/MC/Fulham for fixture cover. Front and back stays much the same (Alex has to play if Luis & Ivan injured) so really only midfield change to:

      Nzogbia/Nani/Malouda/Yaya (Taraabt)

Still think Yaya better value than Silva and Malouda better value than my dearly beloved Lamps.....Nani is a doubt on fixtures and whther he can repeat last year....Nzogbia is the balance & fixtures but needs to prove himself as Villa's now star midfielder.

    Hi all FFS members,

I just need to ask how is it that I've been automatically reinstated in FFS's league?
Is it something to do with FFS having the same league code? cause i've been trying to the same with a private league from last season.

    Thanks lot

    Need some advice:
    My team is currently
    Schwarzer(Moreira)
    Kompany---A.Cole----xxxx (simpson,hall)
    Silva---nzogbia---downing---Sessegnon (Moses)
    Bent---Zomora---Carroll

    5.5 to spend on defender

    My questions are:
    1.Is downing a starter or a sub?
2.Who should go in the xxx slot?
    3.Should I go Given/Hugues instead of Schwarzer/xxx?
4.Nzogbia is fit I've heard rumors about fitness?

Any help would be appriecied, really need to have a positive start since I had a horrible GW1 last year,J.Cole and Bosilli i'll say no more.

2,3. Makes sense to me to either go Schwarzer/Dunne or Given/Hughes

Hello, can you please advise me if this defennce is okay.
    RMD (rate my defense).

    Hart (al habsi)
Boswinga - Rafael - clichy - dunne (orr)

Im not certain Clichy or Boswinga will start too much, frankly after chris smailings right back performance yesterday im not even sure on raffa now.

oh i have wasted 4 weeks!

As you've pointed out, Bos, Clichy and Rafael are all risks. That's way too risk for one defence.

You've answered your own question,Boswinga won't start many matchs and rafael a rotation risk, Clichy should be safe and Dunne. Better off going for sue starters at the start of the season

Dyer has been playing as QPR RB I think... if so, that'll limited Orr's game time.

Knew a new post would scupper me!

    Here goes again:

Please finish my squad for GW1:

    Given/Kenny
Lescott, Ivan, Alacaraz, Simpson, De Laet,
    Nani, Silva, Sinclair, Sessignon, Moses,
    Bent Holt XXXXXXX

Have 12m. Would consider one for GW1 to transfer on GW2?

    Considering Suarez, Drogba, RVP.

    Thoughts?

RVP for GW1 and swap to Drogba if it seems he'll be a started for chelsea, if Drogba is not playing then swap for rooney he'll always play and isn't injury prone.

What do we think of Rooney's performance yesterday? I personally didn't see much but maybe I was just looking at it from a fantasy perspective so if he wasn't getting goals I wasn't pleased! I'm still a bit in between whether to sell him and bring in Nani or just put all faith in the Roo!

I've warmed up to the idea of holt.. Norwich suck defensively.. they'll have to score, even if they get relegated they should get some 30 goals.. he's on penalties.. so at 5.5 he looks set for 10+.. I'm not a norwich fan though so have'nt followed him that well past season.. but seems worth the risk..

Really? Tevez, Van Persie, Drogba (beginning of last season), Rooney, even Berbatov at times, have been great solid captains (okay, Berbs was never solid!).

Van Persie is the most consistent player in the game.

I followed Norwich all of last season (Not an actual fan), and Holt was the first name on my team sheet, the same goes with Anti-Ipswich (He is a Norwich fan), so that says what we think about him, but that may be us being biased, but it may be us seeing him as a very good FPL option having watched him all season.

Nice first couple of fixtures as well....

happy with the lot now only thing im not decided on is

        a) al-habsi and enrique

        b) schwarzer and s.taylor

B is better if enrique stays at newcastle but unsure which to go with from the start, any opinion?

I'd definitely say B yesot. Even if Enrique stays, it won't affect S.taylor much, or it shouldn't. His main competition is Williamson.

Prefer Fulham's fixtures too so that swings it to me.

P.s. even if Enrique starts week 1, most people are agreed that he'll be sold before the end of the transfer window.

          Hope this helps

Have to disagree....Ivan played RB rather than Bosingwa on a number of occassions last year so I have gone for Alex as the only uninjured certainty for CB therefore:
