It was meant to be a comfortable home win, an opening day Anfield stroll against Sunderland. With Luis Suarez passed fit to play and the £50m midfield trio of Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson all making their Premier League bows for Liverpool, surely Kenny Dalglish’s side would pick up the three points and start the season with a bang?

Suarez opened the scoring- a twelfth minute header made amends for an earlier missed penalty- and had Fantasy managers ruing the decision to plump for the safety of Andy Carroll, in light of the Uruguayan’s recent three week break.

The first forty-five saw Liverpool dominant- Andy Carroll had a goal disallowed and Downing hit the bar as the Reds threatened to put the match beyond their visitors’ reach. For those of us with investment in Liverpool’s players, the second half looked promising..

Steve Bruce, however, had other ideas. Ten new signings over the close season suggests this is a side in transition but Sunderland showed a real battling quality that holds promise for the campaign ahead. A stunner from Seb Larsson -snapped up on a free transfer from Birmingham- stole the show after the interval as the Black Cats went toe to toe with their big-spending hosts and took home a well-deserved draw.

While Liverpool travel to the Emirates in Gameweek 2, Sunderland face a showdown with Newcastle at the Stadium of Light. If the Black Cats can replicate this type of determined performance in the Tyne-Wear derby, Alan Pardew may have more than just twitter accounts to keep him awake over the upcoming days.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Guys, these complaints are already worse than RMTs. We've gotten the point. How about back to topic? I'd like to share what I personally picked up today.

Arsenal look desperately in need of a creative spark- not sure about having RVP now. Norwich ARE the new Blackpool- Hoolahan and Holt look like good picks (much like Adam and DJ last year but this time the forward has the set-pieces). Klasnic is a goal-scoring beast- I assume the BPs will thus favour him much more than before and I shall be picking him up when Bolton's fixtures clear up.

That's all I'm confident in saying now. Any other useful feedback from today?

Hoolahan looked good alright. Still though, it was against wigan. Larsson looked very good for sunderland, dominating set pieces. Arsenal will come good....once wilshere and ramsey play together. Rosicky wont play then, and while good he's still a bit lightweight.

We looked good in the first half, don't understand why Flanno got in the team ahead of Kelly but nevermind.

Henderson didn't have a good game, came inside quite often which left Flanno quite vulnerable, playing against his old side in his first game for his new team though, can't slate him too much.

Downing and Suarez played well, Luis was knackered when he came off though. Carroll always a threat, refs give him a hard time 😉

Glad someone else is interested in discussing the games from today.

I was happy to see Hoolahan perform well today and think that he could be the steal of the year. I tried to muster up a bit of support for him in all of the RMT discussions but apparently no one was listening. I think he's got a good/great year ahead of him.

I was also impressed with Moses. He was actually pretty unlucky not to have scored at least one in that game. I did find it interesting that his presence and influence diminished quite a bit once Wigan brought in Rodallega and Sammon. That may be something to keep track of.

What else...John Arne Riise. He's certainly hard to pick up at 6 mil but watching that Fullham game he played so advanced at times that he is definitely one that I am considering picking up.

N'Zogbia seemed completely absent today. Perhaps it will take a few weeks for him to get adjusted and up to game speed, but he played almost no real influence in the game.

I'm also wondering about the Newcastle defense a bit. I decided to invest in S Taylor and perhaps they might be a half-decent defense. Even an understrength Arsenal team would have to threaten at least a little bit more than they did.

Anyway, those are the first thoughts that came to mind...

S Taylor is a real threat at set-pieces and I hope would get bps as a CB in a solid Newcastle defence. Moses looked good indeed- he better come up with something fantasy-wise in the next 2 GWs!

Fulham and Villa may well be worth investing defensively after all! Not too sure about Bent- very few touches, N'zogbia subbed.. BUT Fulham did create a lot of chances and AJ was greedy- he's staying in my team for the near future.

Part of me wonders if Fulham looked a bit more solid and together because of their play in Europe and once the rest of the teams get to playing together for a couple week their true form will be revealed.

One player that I am wondering about is Formica. I wasn't able to catch any of that game but his stats were pretty impressive (4 shots, 1 shots on goal, 1 goal, 2 fouls suffered). Anyone get a chance to watch that game and have any insight on him?

Given that Mark and the team are now in bed with FPL towers, I'd hope that they'll be passing on views of everybody on here today. It's not like there aren't other games out there. Much more of this and I suspect a decent slug of the investment FFS may have received from FPL with be worthless.

Why is everyone whinging about picking Carroll over Suarez? I had Suarez in until I panicked due to his questionable status and was annoyed but still Suarez will end up with 3 points to Carroll's 2 thanks to Suarez' missed penalty and coming off early. Whats the fuss? Carroll played well, had a goal disallowed and generally was the focal point of most of the crosses (although he looked rather knackered late in the game). If you like Carroll there was nothing in this game to suggest he wont deliver for you. Personally I like Suarez better over the course of the season and had planned to switch back after a few games when Suarez' match fitness was a bit better to save .5 million. Although Ill probably have to switch back this week in order to preserve the price savings (Suarez surely will go up this week). Of course that means I now have to stick with Tarrabt another week (cue kneejerk panic on Tarrabt)...

I think the "live points" issue could be something to do with the media dispute that has now been resolved (allowing newspapers to report on games)- the FPL game may not have had the facility to do live scoring this week due the uncertainty of the dispute.
