Andre Villas-Boas grabs a debut point in a bruising encounter at Stoke. Fernando Torres repays his manager’s faith and shows an appetite sorely missing of late. Man United steal a march on many of their rivals already, picking up all three points at the Hawthorns, as Ashley Young’s debut show overshadows Nani. Here’s the Scout Notes from yesterday’s games, then:

Torres Looking Lively
Andre Villas-Boas took everyone by surprise when the Chelsea line-up was announced for the Stoke game. With Fernando Torres just back in training from concussion, surely the last thing he needed was a bruising battle at the Britannia? To his credit, though, Torres proved the Blues boss right, with a determined performance that suggested he’s recaptured some of the confidence that seems to have evaporated over the last twelve months.

With two home games against West Brom and Norwich, Fantasy managers will be hoping Torres can keep his place and lessen the likelihood of rotation up top. Jose Bosingwa’s selection at right-back over the more battle-hardened Branislav Ivanovic suggests Villas-Boas may prefer his more attack-minded game in the Chelsea starting XI.

Woodgate Keeps Fit
Robert Huth continued at right-back for the Potters, allowing Jonathan Woodgate to keep his place alongside Ryan Shawcross in the heart of defence. Tony Pulis’ injury worries continued yesterday, with both Matt Etherington and Rory Delap departing the proceedings with possible shoulder and hamstring problems respectively.

Fergie Keeps Faith in Youngsters
After his Community Shield performance in the previous week, Sir Alex Ferguson started Tom Cleverley alongside Anderson in central midfield. Injuries to Rafael and Patrice Evra meant Chris Smalling and Fabio grabbed the full-back slots, though with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic looking likely to be sidelined for six and two weeks respectively, the likes of Phil Jones seems set for some first-team starts over the upcoming Gameweeks.

Fergie once again chose the pace and movement of Danny Welbeck over Dimitar Berbatov up top, in light of Javier Hernandez’s absence through concussion. Ashley Young made an instant impact for United; the winger played a part in both his side’s goals, with a ball into the box deflected into his own net by Steven Reid.

Roy Starts Tchoyi Up Front
Somen Tchoyi once again featured as a forward for West Brom. Classed as a midfielder in many Fantasy games, Tchoyi was paired with debutant Shane Long in a front two, with Peter Odemwingie failing to recover from an ankle injury. Although the Baggies registered more shots than Man United yesterday, Long’s goal was somewhat fortuitous, with David de Gea allowing a tame shot to find its way past him. Graham Dorrans had to settle for a place on the bench, with James Morrison grabbing the left wing berth in the 2-1 defeat.

44 points with Sliva and Kompany to play. Not too bad but fantasy hasn't been enjoyable at all the past few days. No real time point updates, no league tables, no breakdown of a player's points, FPL site is a chore to navigate and bonus point system seems maybe even more flawed than it was last year (and I thought it was actually OK last season). That's not even counting people being unable to access the site for long periods. A total own goal so far I'm afraid.

They're doing away with the rankings this year - some of the lower ranked players were having self-esteem issues, so now you just get a message saying 'well done, you tried your best and that's all anyone can ask.'

Why should Carroll get BPs? His main job is to score goals, he had seven shots and only one of those were on target. Andy Cole used to get slated for having a 1 in 6 goal to shot ratio.

I was talking to halnone guys.

But there were two goalscorers in that 1-1 between Liverpool and Sunderland, they were always likely to grab bonus even under the old system.

Sessegnon and Carroll therefore couldnt have both got on the BP trail.

Carroll was ridiculously consistent last year - something like 15 out of 17 gameweeks with a score of 4 or above before his injury.

Now he's at Liverpool, of course, so expect that to drop 😉

IMO Suarez will perform well in most matches as he outclasses most players in the league whereas Carroll will find some defences that he can bully and others that keep him quiet.

I noticed last year that the refs make a big difference to Carroll's performance- all depends on the interpretation of what a foul is - in some matches players were getting away with almost rugby tackling carroll as refs seem to think he could take it as he was a big lad. In matches where the refs took a sterner approach players couldn't put him off his heading so much and he was unstoppable.

Took a flyer on A Johnson for his preseason form
After the game I was considering transfers and figured AJ to Holt or maybe Graham because Dembele looks healthy.
This morning I see 3 BP's for the hairless one.
You think the gsffer leaves AJ up front and center or sets him to the bench for use as an "impact" sub?

Save it. Week 3 there is a break for international fixtures, so it's long, you can earn some money maybe with price rises and deal with any injuries and see what the starting teams are for the clubs.

Things like double game weeks make having a wildcard saved worth tons of potential points.

I used it in the 3rd week last year.

Kept swapping players to build up team value, using the Totalfpl site to let me know when prices were going up and who would be a 'double riser' during the break.

Then at the end of the break i picked the team i wanted with the extra cash!

The Hodge is an experienced solid player. I feel the frustration, part of mine is the time necessary to do a good job, plus the tinkering that will be necessary for the new BP system, which now seems random, but so did the old one to an extent.
Good luck, Hodge, enjoyed your posts last season.

Because it's broken. Not thoroughly tested. You will probably have to wait a couple of weeks before you can just go to the site and find accurate, up to date info like last season.

In the same boat mate, considering keeping. I didnt see the game but so I hear Kalou and Malouda were not great. So Im guessing he might get a start. If I had 0.5 in the bank Id probably upgrade to Torres, so I need to take a hit too.

OK, so I have totally kneejerked and played my WC. How does this team seem for GW2:

    Given (Al Habsi)
    Fabio Brown Kompany (Senderos Simpson
    Sessegnon Sinclair Young Nzog (Moses)
    Bent Suarez Rooney

I know I've spent a lot on strikers but with the BP system now, it seems even more important to have goalscorers. Any suggestions for improvement?

Yeah am worried about lack of Chelsea coverage but certain starters for Chelsea are either too expensive or not attractive (ie Mikel, Ramires). I'm just praying they don't do too much damage and my choices pay off.

Fabio is only in for one week, then it's Enrique, after the Arsenal game.

Who would you suggest for a 5M keeper, instead of Given? For me, Given is the bargain keeper this season. Will be willing to playing Al Habsi, if Given doesn't recover in time.

Anyone see what David Starky said on Newsnight on Friday? It starts off bad and then just gets worse and worse. Its just stupifyingly awful:

"I think what this week has shown is that profound changes have happened... there has been a profound cultural change. I have just been re-reading Enoch Powell, the 'rivers of blood' speech.

"His prophecy was absolutely right in one sense. The Tiber didn't foam with blood, but flames lambent wrapped around Tottenham, wrapped around Clapham.

"But it wasn't intercommunal violence. This was where he [Enoch Powell] was completely wrong.

'What has happened is that the substantial section of the chavs that you wrote about have become black. The whites have become black. A particular sort of violent, destructive, nihilistic gangster culture has become the fashion.

"Black and white, boy and girl operate in this language together. This language, which is wholly false, which is this Jamaican patois that's been intruded in England.

"This is why so many of us have this sense of literally a foreign country."

With Toby Young, I mean. I don't think Starkey was being much more than fogeyish. I find it hard to believe he's a racist. He does love to stir up controversy though, and as a result a lot of people now loathe him.

Have to agree with him about the communal language that's somehow developed over the years. I was listening to some black girls talking on a London bus the other day. When they walked past me to get off it turned out they were white. Why do they speak like that?

Got 42 points with Kompany and Silva yet to play. As a United fan, I don't really care for them to perform... as a Fantasy fan, obviously I'm banking on it. Ugh, this new site is driving me crazy. I'm actually a fan of the design... or would be if it did everything the old one did, but it's not even close.

    Given (Ruddy)
    Hughes, Kompany, Orr (Brown, Simpson)
    N'Zogbia, Taarabt, Silva, Nani (Sinclair)
    Rooney, Carroll, Holt

This was my team for this week.

Carroll > Suarez a good use of my free transfer? 0.5 in bank.

In a shocking turn of events Jussi Jaaskelainen has become an FPL bonus magnet being able to steal bonus points from other players in other games.
Owners of Ashley Young, Victor Moses and Shay Given were said to feel robbed and be demanding their well earned bonus points back.
When asked about the events the Finn replied that he had recently spent the summer with Cesc Fabregas, Barry Ferguson and Charlie Adam and had "Learnt a thing or two".
    More on this to follow.
