Before we draw a line firmly under the first Gameweek, we’ve decided to analyse some individual performances over the weekend. By looking at the Opta stats of Fernando Torres, we can see what his Sunday showing at the Britannia offered in comparison to his average displays for the Blues last term. The same applies to Robin Van Persie- no goals from the Dutchman at St James on Saturday night, but how did his game hold up?

In this first Members article of the active Fantasy season, we also take a look at Victor Moses and Ashley Young’s Man United league debut, weighing up what the pair’s new roles this season have offered so far…

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Here's an interesting stat for you: see if you can guess which 6 teams Man City kept a clean sheet against in AWAY fixtures last season.

Read some people were talking about jumping ship to the Metro game this year so had a look. Some interesting (and more complicated) scoring rules but I think the player pricing is a bit off.

eg (after buying about the cheapest subs) you can actually put together this team....

    Given
    Baines Kompany Cole
    Silva Adam Young N'Zogbia
    Rooney Saurez Torres

...and still have some pocket change!?

Seems to me FPL is much more of a balancing act and more of a challenge

I've got to say, the bugs have been annoying this year, but this is my fifth season of FPL and I'm going nowhere

i dont mind it at all. I'd tend to look for some everton player in the forward half, cahill or a saha or if your feeling dangerous arteta. IMHO im going for sinclair over jarvis, but thats just based on pure opinion, got nothing to back it up, but i like it.

Just shooting some thoughts out here: why does balance between the midfield and attack matter when points are the same coming from either? Surely a strong attack and weak midfield would produce, on average, the same output as a "balanced" midfield and attack?

good point, the arguement is by spending so much money in your forward line it affects the outlay of the rest of the team or the 'balance'. meaning you are unable to get any quality players in these positions. its a debate i dont really agree in though, but it seems to get constantly talked about having "good balance".

I think the logic is that the new Bonus Point system seems to be fairly skewed in favour of goal scorers

Plus, I think you can probably get better second tier midfielders than you can second tier forwards

I'd agree with that. Whilst you have to pick at least 3 defenders each week, your 8 attacking players are essentially one pool to pick from, so it doesn't really matter how the money is distributed between midfield and attack.

Balance teams gives a points than unbalance teams. If Strikers failed to deliver than we can expect mids to score some or other. But i have to agree that point.

I think it's because for example if you have 2 top mids and 2 top strikers and 1 of each of them is not performing you can easily transfer them for another top player in that position.
If you have for example 3 expensive strikers and a poor midfield and a couple of high priced midfielders start firing on all cylinders it's harder to get them both in your team without losing transfer points as all of your money is spent on your strikers.

Nobody is really on form and when they do score its a tossup betwix the bunch.

Not a fan. It feels too much like you're playing the short-term fixtures. You won't get a wildcard every week! You only have 1 free transfer a week. The likes of Cahill, Bent, Torres will all need to be replaced at some point after their fixtures tail off for more proven fantasy favorites.

Obvious fixes at some point would be Cahill, Bent & Torres -> VDV, Suarez & RVP/Rooney. To be funded by downgrading Baines or Cole to a 6-6.5m option (Kompany or one of the non Terry centre backs)...

I think the structure is what messes you up. Baines and Cole are too expensive.

Get Baines if you must, but downgrade Cole to Bosingwa or Enrique.

Bent and Cahill I'd lose. I like Bent's next two, but Villa just don't look as good a prospect up front this season. I've never been a big fan of Cahill. Contributes little except headed goals, but I will concede he does hit nice form once in a while. However, we haven't seen Everton play, this is the start of the season, Everton, notoriously slow starters, and at 9.0, there's better value in N'Zog to take advantage of fixtures or Yaya for consistent returns or of course, an upgrade to Young, Nani, VdV, Malouda.

Do you think Bosingwa has cemented the RB slot? Never thought i'd hear you recommend him! If he is, I could do Cole -> Bos and ditch Cahill for either:

            a) Malouda/Nani & Bent
            b) N'Zogbia & Rooney & 1.5m

            ??

I meant to ask Camzy, are you swaying towards 3 big guns up front and a lighter mid, or 2 big guns and an extra circa 10m mid?

              3 big guns for me.

The reason being midfield budget options are plentiful compared to the meagre pickings of forwards.

I also feel heavyweight midfield options just aren't all that great. Lampard is 12.0 and sitting deep, Malouda is looking really average, Nani and Young are tough to pick between and have tough fixtures, VdV has tough fixtures and fitness issues. I mean who else is there to pick?

Silva is probably the best choice, but even he looks overpriced compared to Toure at 8.0.

Then you have the likes of Taarabt and Sinclair on penalties, Sessegnon OoP and a bunch of other mids who are cheap and great value. Of course, always leave the door open in case a Nani or VdV decides to tear it up, but as it is, heavyweight strikers Rooney, Suarez, Aguero, Torres, not to mention RVP starting GW 4 definitly look like the way forward.

For what it's worth, I quite like it. You'll always have to play the short term fixtures to an extent. Your backline is pretty solid and barring injuries will see you well for the long term. Bent IS a proven fantasy favourite, and if Torres hits anything like his previous form, so is he.

Like you say, my main concern would be a lack of United coverage.

Bent and Torres should be considered at least semi-fixture proof.

I think it looks good tbh. Good spread of rotating defenders, Solid midfield with rotation option. 2 good strikers, 1 cheap gamble.

      Could work out nice.

    Given (ruddy)
Cole W Brown Lescott Serendos (Simpson)
    Silva N'Zogbia * Mose (Dyer)
    Suarez * (Holt)

    My Chelsea Dilemma:

A Malouda Bent (Captain 1 of the 2, 2 million in the bank to pounce on tranfers)

B Lampard (c) Bent (No money to upgrade Bent if he fails n others kill it)

    C A Young Torres(c) (1.5 million bank)

D A Young Aguero (1.5 million banked, Chelsea too hard to deal with)

Looking at fixtures and the fact that he managed to get 2 bonus points in the last game without a goal or assist I'm surprised that so many people are overlooking Zamora. Everybody has gone Aguero crazy. Granted he's a very good player but he's still not fully fit and wont come off the bench every game to score 2 goals.

      how's about A.Johnson without goal or assist + 3 bonus points ?

i think he's an interesting option at 5.5m

he gave me a surprise BP in gw 1.

I'm pretty settled now... if they mess up again this week and give us another free wildcard I don't think I'll be able to handle it!

    I'm going with:

    Vorm (Schwarzer)
Baines Bosingwa Warnock (Simpson, De Laet)
Malouda (C) Toure Hoolahan Moses (Brunt)
    Torres Rooney Fletcher

    Newbie here, RMT please...

    Given (Ruddy)
    Brown Henrique Bosingwa (Simpson, Senderos)
    Yaya Lamps Moses Zgog (Brunt)
    Saha Torres Bent

    0.5 in the bank

GW2 dilemma - Henrique (Arsenal in disaaray but still potent strikers) or Simpson (chance of 0-0 in tyne/weir derby?)

Plan to do the 12.0/7.5 swap with Lamps and Saha in a GW4/5 and bring Roonpig/Aguero and a 7.5/8.5 mid

Realise Bosingwa may be a rotational risk and not sure not having either cashley or baines is wise.

    Waddya reckon?

Jose Enrique, Luiz, Kompany (Simpson, Neil Taylor)
Miyaichi, NZog, Silva (v), Larsson (Moses)
    Suarez (c), Aguero, Torres

Not my final team but I think I'm going to take a punt on Miyaichi. He probably won't start but I'm sure he'll get his debut. Moses should score higher and they're certainly better alternatives but I'm a fan of Japanese talent so why not?

He looks like a great player but he's super lightweight, I can't see him getting much game time this season.

Why wouldn't he? As opposed to later in the season? lol...

He's heavier than half of Chelsea's squad if you meant the weight literally.

    Guys

Since FPL Towers have given us a free wildcard this week is anyone making a team purely to take advantage of the tasty home fixtures for a few teams in weeks 2&3? I've made a pretty decent team with all 11 at home in GW2 and 9 at home in GW3, all in winnable games. Would probably play the wild card again before the 4th.round of games. Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere but is it a reasonable tactic or a fool's errand?

    Lescott Cole Baines Taylor Brown

    Flecher Bent Aguero

My mid-field is annoying me, am I too defense heavy, I just think that this year defenders might out-score mid fielders.
