Roy Hodgson fears Fernando Torres, ahead of tomorrow night’s trip to the Bridge. Everton’s debt may see the sale of sought-after centre-half Phil Jagielka. Blackburn, according to Steve Kean, are on the verge of a triple player swoop. Chelsea may forget about Modric and are head the queue for Juan Mata, while Spurs, Stoke and Fulham warm up for the weekend with wins in the Europa League qualifiers. Here’s todays Scribbles, folks:

Stoke continued their good European form with a 1-0 over Swiss side Thun last night. Tony Pulis continued his policy of playing Thomas Sorenson in goal for cup games, Matthew Upson made his Potters debut at the heart of defence and while Jermaine Pennant was rested, Matt Etherington unexpectedly recovered from a shoulder injury and took his place in the starting XI.

Spurs warmed up for their Monday night trip to Old Trafford by hammering Hearts at Tynecastle. With Spurs devoid of first-team midfielders, Jake Livermore and Niko Krancjar were given a chance and the latter, in particular, ran the show in the 5-0 drubbing . Rafael Van der Vaart served Fantasy mangers a reminder of his talents by grabbing the first in a performance Harry Redknapp reckoned:

I’d say that’s as good as I’ve seen us play to be honest. We passed the ball great. We played with a team with loads of ability and there was great movement everywhere.

Clint Dempsey hogged the headlines in Fulham’s clinical 3-0 demolition of Dnipro. The US international played up front alongside Bobby Zamora and grabbed a double as Martin Jol rang the changes for the Europa League qualifier. John Arne Riise, Dickson Etuhu and Philipp Senderos -all starters last weekend at home to Aston Villa- were rested for the encounter, while Pajtim Kasasmi offered glimpses of his trickery in an impressive showing on the right wing.

Roy Hodgson is running scared of Fernando Torres ahead of West Brom’s trip to Stamford Bridge tomorrow evening. El Nino, of course, played under the Baggies boss at Liverpool last season and with Torres looking the part against Stoke last weekend, Hodgson is wary of his former striker:

I am very glad for him that he appears to be showing some of his old form. Torres, in the form he is capable of showing, is capable of causing a lot of problems for my defence…he is a top-quality player – and I fear that I will see that at close hand on Saturday!

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed he is still in the market for midfield recruits before the end of August deadline. Ahead of this weekend’s Liberty Stadium showdown with Wigan, the Swansea boss admitted :

We need to make sure we have enough strength and that there is enough depth, and midfield is a key part of our game. A lot of the basis of our work on the field is based around midfield and it’s about having enough of the different types for us to control the game or win the ball, and it’s about having coverage at the back.

Blackburn are on the verge of signing three new players. Having been snubbed by Raul earlier in the week, Steve Kean will not be deterred and the Ewood Park outfit look set to add a defender, midfielder and forward to their ranks over the next few days.

Newcastle are rumoured to be after PSV left-back Erik Pieters. Alan Pardew is tracking the player following Jose Enrique’s departure and despite being linked with Wayne Bridge and Ally Cissokho, a move for the Dutchman is now said to be more likely.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright yesterday revealed the scale of the club’s financial plight. The Toffees are struggling to keep the banks at bay, which lends weight to the belief that Phil Jagielka could be sold to alleviate part of the problem. Everton have yet to sign a player this summer but in light of this revelation, perhaps it’s little surprise.

Andre Villas-Boas is unsure whether Chelsea will make another bid for Luka Modric. With two bids for the Croatian already rejected by Tottenham, Chelsea would need to top the £30m mark to stand any chance of success.

“I don’t know if it’s viable or not and to what extent we can go regarding his price because we are speaking about a high amount and nothing else basically. End of story.I just have to study the rest of the market and hopefully find a solution for my team.”

Other reports suggest the Blues are on the verge of clinching a deal for Juan Mata. Villas-Boas is a keen admirer of the player and with Arsenal unlikely to match their spending power, Chelsea appear favourites to clinch the highly-rated Spaniard’s signature.

why do none of the RMT's I see play 4-4-2? Surely a large proportion of your points should come from midfield - Sessegnon managed 51 points last season, Moses 42, Tiote barely did any better. Why do so many people have these players in their team?

I don't see how captaining Torres is less of a risk. 1 goal for D.Bent could easily should mean 3 bonus points aswell.

Question I asked myself about Bent - Who will supply his ammunition? N'Zogbia seemed to fit the bill.

Still don't know how the new boss will set Villa up. Until then, N'Zogbia will do just fine.

I've decided to go with him. First home game of the season, backing Villa to do well. Scored 3 in 4 in the league against Blackburn, and scored against them in Pre season. If he doesn't perform, i can easily downgrade him to Suarez or upgrade him to Aguero (1m in the bank). No biggie.

              Interesting stats dug up -

There have been more draws at Villa Park (113) than at any other team in Premier League history.

Villa have scored exactly one goal in each of their last four Premier League matches at Villa Park.

Aston Villa have lost just one of their last nine Premier League matches.

Blackburn have won just two of their last 15 Premier League games.

Blackburn have lost 11 of their last 16 Premier League matches on the road, but lost only one of their last four away matches.

Stephen Warnock made more interceptions (7) than any other player on the opening weekend.

Darren Bent has scored three goals in his last four Premier League games against Rovers.

32% of Darren Bent’s Premier League goals over the last two seasons have been scored in the opening 15 minutes of matches.

There have been five goals scored between the 20th and 22nd minutes in Blackburn’s last five games, four of them netted by Rovers.

Villa conceded the joint-most fouls (19) in the opening round of matches.

    Bosingwa, Kompany, Baines, (Gabbidon, Simpson)
    Silva, Sessegnon, Taarabt, Moses (Hoolahan)
    Suarez, Aguero, Bent

Enjoyed Mark and Granville's meanderings on the podcast regarding shots off target and how forwards will be penalised (bonus points wise) for their wastefulness. So further to that here's an interesting list, I've weeded out quite a few I didn't see as necessary but if there's any glaring ommissions, let me know:

    Shots on Target Ratio 2010/11

    Johnson (Andy) 0.731
    Anichebe 0.667
    Di Santo 0.619
    Agbonlahor 0.600
    Fortuné 0.600
    Løvenkrands 0.600
    Roberts 0.588
    Saha 0.587
    Ebanks-Blake 0.563
    Defoe 0.548
    Fletcher 0.545

    Tévez 0.523
    Rooney 0.519
    Campbell (DJ) 0.519

Wow. Just noticed the Sunderland-Newcastle game starts at noon on Saturday. Chance of early line ups then?

The Arsenal-Liverpool game is early too on Saturday but at 12:45, so we probably won't get line-ups for that.

I've noticed that too. We'll now the lineups IMO, but it will be useful only if FPL doesn't crash again.

Yep, both would be benched this week and have the same rotation after that. Rotating with Jarvis.

Moses looked good though and the 1.0 could be handy.

Should I start Evra, Simpson or D.J. Campbell? I'm not in a league thats part of the official fantasy prem hence I dont have unlimited transfers unfortunately.

None of them look particularly favourable - Spurs are bound to put one past united, Simpson away against Sunderland or hope that Everton start as rubbish as usual and D.J. manages to score??????

anyone think crouch could do well against utd. utd defence in tatters, surely harry will be hoofing the ball up to him to unsettle their backline

tempted and not overly worried about Vorm - not sure about Ruddy...

Wondered about Vorm/Krul - not a bad rotation

I'm going to take a risk and stick Barkley in my team. Some everton fans think he will get good playing time, they cant sign anyone and looks quite good.

He's in my team, but he's a big risk.

He'll probably either go off after 5 minutes or bang in a hat trick, he's that type of player.

    Given-Ruddy
    Boswinga-Kompany-Brown-(De Laet)-(Simpson)
    NZog-Silva-Moses-Sess-(Brunt)
    Rooney-Torres(C)-Suarez

    Cheers

      Good team, only issues:

Boswinga is not liklely to keep his place so be prepared to transfer him out after he doesn't start a game.

N'Zog - IMO he will not do anything this season and there is much better vlaue out there.

Yeah, similar midfield to me and I'm also concerned about N'Zog potential return... He'll either do nothing, or he'll tear it up completely, can't see anyone else feeding Bent.

Who would you replace him with?
