Roy Hodgson fears Fernando Torres, ahead of tomorrow night’s trip to the Bridge. Everton’s debt may see the sale of sought-after centre-half Phil Jagielka. Blackburn, according to Steve Kean, are on the verge of a triple player swoop. Chelsea may forget about Modric and are head the queue for Juan Mata, while Spurs, Stoke and Fulham warm up for the weekend with wins in the Europa League qualifiers. Here’s todays Scribbles, folks:

Stoke continued their good European form with a 1-0 over Swiss side Thun last night. Tony Pulis continued his policy of playing Thomas Sorenson in goal for cup games, Matthew Upson made his Potters debut at the heart of defence and while Jermaine Pennant was rested, Matt Etherington unexpectedly recovered from a shoulder injury and took his place in the starting XI.

Spurs warmed up for their Monday night trip to Old Trafford by hammering Hearts at Tynecastle. With Spurs devoid of first-team midfielders, Jake Livermore and Niko Krancjar were given a chance and the latter, in particular, ran the show in the 5-0 drubbing . Rafael Van der Vaart served Fantasy mangers a reminder of his talents by grabbing the first in a performance Harry Redknapp reckoned:

I’d say that’s as good as I’ve seen us play to be honest. We passed the ball great. We played with a team with loads of ability and there was great movement everywhere.

Clint Dempsey hogged the headlines in Fulham’s clinical 3-0 demolition of Dnipro. The US international played up front alongside Bobby Zamora and grabbed a double as Martin Jol rang the changes for the Europa League qualifier. John Arne Riise, Dickson Etuhu and Philipp Senderos -all starters last weekend at home to Aston Villa- were rested for the encounter, while Pajtim Kasasmi offered glimpses of his trickery in an impressive showing on the right wing.

Roy Hodgson is running scared of Fernando Torres ahead of West Brom’s trip to Stamford Bridge tomorrow evening. El Nino, of course, played under the Baggies boss at Liverpool last season and with Torres looking the part against Stoke last weekend, Hodgson is wary of his former striker:

I am very glad for him that he appears to be showing some of his old form. Torres, in the form he is capable of showing, is capable of causing a lot of problems for my defence…he is a top-quality player – and I fear that I will see that at close hand on Saturday!

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed he is still in the market for midfield recruits before the end of August deadline. Ahead of this weekend’s Liberty Stadium showdown with Wigan, the Swansea boss admitted :

We need to make sure we have enough strength and that there is enough depth, and midfield is a key part of our game. A lot of the basis of our work on the field is based around midfield and it’s about having enough of the different types for us to control the game or win the ball, and it’s about having coverage at the back.

Blackburn are on the verge of signing three new players. Having been snubbed by Raul earlier in the week, Steve Kean will not be deterred and the Ewood Park outfit look set to add a defender, midfielder and forward to their ranks over the next few days.

Newcastle are rumoured to be after PSV left-back Erik Pieters. Alan Pardew is tracking the player following Jose Enrique’s departure and despite being linked with Wayne Bridge and Ally Cissokho, a move for the Dutchman is now said to be more likely.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright yesterday revealed the scale of the club’s financial plight. The Toffees are struggling to keep the banks at bay, which lends weight to the belief that Phil Jagielka could be sold to alleviate part of the problem. Everton have yet to sign a player this summer but in light of this revelation, perhaps it’s little surprise.

Andre Villas-Boas is unsure whether Chelsea will make another bid for Luka Modric. With two bids for the Croatian already rejected by Tottenham, Chelsea would need to top the £30m mark to stand any chance of success.

“I don’t know if it’s viable or not and to what extent we can go regarding his price because we are speaking about a high amount and nothing else basically. End of story.I just have to study the rest of the market and hopefully find a solution for my team.”

Other reports suggest the Blues are on the verge of clinching a deal for Juan Mata. Villas-Boas is a keen admirer of the player and with Arsenal unlikely to match their spending power, Chelsea appear favourites to clinch the highly-rated Spaniard’s signature.

Can someone please talk me out of going with both Nani and Rooney for the next two GWs? Rooney will more than likely be there for the long haul, but Nani is stepping in for Silva with MCY's two away games. GW4 and Silva would come back in.

City will still win away. Silva will still get points away. Yes Man U may be at home but they have hard home fixtures where city have easier away fixtures!!

IMO Silva will still out score Nani over this period...
Silva will be the stand out for a reasonable City whilst Nani will fall short to Young & Rooney.

As interesting as that is to glance at (thanks for the legwork), can you really see AVB playing Drogs over El Nino? I cannot, and nor do I see him playing both as that would suggest he's as confused about his formation as Anchovy was.

Chelsea are more effective with Drogba, and without Torres: FACT!

        What we know:

        1) Torres had probably his best game for chelsea against Stoke, yet they failed to score.

        2) Drogba has a phenomenal goal record against WBA. He's a beast wiaitng to be unleashed.

Whom AVB decides to start with remains to be seen.

I'm not saying jump on Drog, as that would be a brave man who takes the risk... but one that could pay dividends according to past stats!

I think they will both play. Torres will not be dropped due to 2 things. The first being a glimpse of returning form (Man of match) and second the 50Million they paid for him! He will get a good run out now and if in 4-8 weeks hes done nothing expect him to be dropped for good!!!!

Is it a good or bad thing that I have 1.5m spare at the moment after making the changes I wanted? Rooney downgraded to Torres and Cech downgraded to de Gea are purely temporary moves for the next few fixtures, but for some reason it feels weird not having my team fill up the full 100m budget! Is there any bad that can come from having spare cash (e.g. losing money)?

You're a madman or a fool for having de Gea...Not much on the horizon in the way of clean sheets for Man U. I would go for Hilario, and pocket the extra wonga. Rooney is a season-keeper, but Torres should blow big this weekend. I'm smelling a double for the dude.

Having Hilario does give mean I would then have 3.5m spare, unfortunately don't really want to be spending it because then I don't have the option to get back Cech/Rooney when I want. As you said Rooney is a season keeper, I've merely swapped him out for this week though since I have a feeling about Torres.

This is getting silly. It took just 15 minutes to fill up page 6 on this thread. Nobody can read the messages as fast as they are sent.

Can we please have a bit of a rest from RMTs? Before sending one in, could we all read a bit more to see if a consensus already exists? They're all similar, there's no time to answer and nobody knows really. Why ask about choice of captain when there is a dedicated poll for this?

    Also, "+1 s" don't add very much.

How about different sections, such as "RMT", "General strategy", "latest definite news", "latest rumours" etc?

If I was a wise man (which I am, perversely...), I would hold off on Aguero until at least GW 3. Splunge on a splunker, and you're likely to get splunked.

Baines (C) Bosingwa Kompany (Enrique) (Simpson)
    Sessegnon Ramires Yaya Ramsey (Moses)
    Dzeko Rooney Suarez

0 in the bank. If I go for Torres I have to lose another Chelsea player (3 max) so would likely drop Hilario for Given. However, if I do that I'm left with .5 in the bank, which isn't enough to upgrade from Torres to Rooney should I want to...

Team news, Villa vs Blackburn on Sky Sports:

Given has shaken off a groin problem sustained at Fulham to be fit for Saturday's match.

Villa boss McLeish is therefore poised to name the same side that started last week's goalless draw, with Darren Bent, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Emile Heskey playing in a three-pronged attack.

Blackburn boss Kean was forced to field midfielder Steven Nzonzi as a makeshift centre-half against Wolves as Chris Samba, Ryan Nelsen and Gael Givet were all out.

But Rovers have been boosted by the return of Nelsen and Samba to training and the defensive duo are set to replace Nzonzi and Grant Hanley.

I'm captaining Lampard for the next 2 weeks bar injury/suspension vs Norwich. I just think over the 2 games Chelsea probably win a penalty and frank bags 15-20 points combined for the matches.

It'll most likely be Jones+Evans in centre with Smalling at RB and Evra at LB.

Fergie announced the back-line but as the majority are injured it's just a case of whether risking Jones/Evans or go with Smalling who seems a cert
