Arsenal and Man City have this afternoon agreed a fee for the transfer of Samir Nasri. The Frenchman is due to arrive in Manchester later today for a medical and the deal, believed to be in the region of £20m, can be expected to go through imminently. Great news for City, then, but from a Fantasy manager’s point of view, does this merely muddy the waters when eyeing up Roberto Mancini’s men?

A Man City Midfield Perspective
Prior to the season kicking off, Mancini went on record as saying his outfit must score more goals if they are to stand a chance of picking up the title. So far, the team’s play has been refreshingly open and it appears the City boss is determined to shed the negative, mainly defensive take on a 4-2-3-1 formation last season.

Seven goals in their opening two games and Mancini has now added a 4-4-2 formation to his side’s repertoire. David Silva, as Mark mentioned earlier, has been outstanding in his opening two games and has looked the strongest City midfield option available so far. Yaya Toure’s performance at home to Swansea –he had 9 shots at goal- had perhaps suggested an alternative to Silva but the very real possibility of a 4-4-2 coming into play would see him drop deeper and resultantly lessen his Fantasy potential. The limited game time of both Adam Johnson and James Milner looks likely to suffer still, though the latter’s ability to play centrally may allow him more minutes.

Nasri’s adaptability will help. Although he’s able to play anywhere in the attacking midfield three, he is more likely to find a place on City’s left wing- Mancini’s use of the left-footed Silva as an inverted winger from the right is testament to that, though Silva’s role as the chief creator, the one to drop deep and link play, still looks assured; Mancini is too conservative to give two of his first XI license to act as playmakers.

Though it’s impossible to predict just how important Nasri’s role in the City first XI may prove to be, this brilliant article by Simon Kuper on the increased importance of football and statistics is revealing. Kuper paid a visit to Man City’s training ground and found that, just like Fantasy managers, the club pay a great deal of attention to player statistics. Gavin Fleig, City’s head of performance analysis, explained the line of thinking:

“The top four teams consistently have a higher percentage of pass completion in the final third of the pitch. Since the recruitment of Carlos Tévez, David Silva, Adam Johnson and Yaya Touré to our football team, in the last six months alone, our ability to keep the ball in the final third has grown by 7.7 per cent.”

A look at our Members area reveals just how strong Nasri is in that respect. He was rated seventh for successful passes in the opposition half last season- Toure and Silva, City’s top two, were eighth and ninth, despite both playing five games more. If City are to back up Mancini’s demands of attacking football, Nasri’s contribution looks key, then, though with the club also participating in the Champions League, it’s too early to take a punt, with Silva still likely to be the most assured Fantasy choice in City’s midfield until time make matters more apparent.

An Arsenal Midfield Perspective
At present, the Nasri move certainly nails down Gervinho’s place on the Arsenal left. Andrei Arshavin continues to look a shadow of his former self and while Gervinho is a more attack-minded presence than Nasri, he is still as creative- the Ivorian assisted 10 goals last season as well as scoring 15 for Lille. The problem is, in most Fantasy games, including the FPL, Gervinho is classified as a forward.

With Cesc Fabregas gone and already scoring goals for Barcelona, there are slim pickings available in the Arsenal midfield from a Fantasy point a view- a rare thing, indeed. Aaron Ramsey may yet cement his place in Arsene Wenger’s first XI and, at 6.5, is undoubtedly a potential bargain if this proves to be the case, while Theo Walcott’s season has already been blighted by injury- the winger lacks consistency and has a tendency to be one of the most frustrating Fantasy options around.

The Gunners look bereft of all confidence right now and it will be galling for Wenger that the only player who looked likely to make things happen against Liverpool on Saturday was Nasri. The Arsenal boss has plenty cash to splash, then; these next eight days before the end of August will hopefully bring us one or two more Emirates options worthy of our Fantasy consideration.

You've already got Bent. I'd do N'Zog to Taarabt.

He's on QPR pens and there's a feel good factor at the club now. Plus, after last weekend, looks like he'll be in for bap love if they win. If they can go to Everton and win then they have a good chance of beating Wigan this weekend too.

I'd save the transfer myself. N'Zogbia's got a good fixture. Have 2 after the international break.

Plus, not sure if Taarabt is premiership quality yet.

For what its worth, my teams very similar -

              Hilario, Vorm
              Cole, Warnock, Simpson, Brown, Senderos
              Cahill, N’Zog, O'Hara, Sinclair, Moses
              Rooney, Suarez, Torres

I'm sticking this week... even in the unlikely event that Cahill and Moses completely miss out, I'd still have O'Hara and Brown to come in who don't have the worst fixtures in the world...

After the international break, Ill rid myself of Torres and Cole for Kompany and RVP/Aguero

              Up to you.

Villa scored 3 last week and N'Zog not involved in any of them.

Just a feeling, but I can see QPR beating Wigan this weekend and Taarabt getting some points in that one.

I'd certainly keep Bent and get rid of N'Zog anyway, if not this week then certainly next week.

Johnson and Taylor won't keep getting big scores.

I'd play Rodwell, Everton playing a poor Blackburn at Goodison Park. Both teams are going to struggle this season but Everton should be able to score.

Norwich look like this years Blackpool. They'll score goals against anyone but will concede too. They could well score at Chelsea.

Using the same logic one could suggest allowing all the big nations of the world enter multiple teams into the WCQ simple because their 2nd teams would be better than the 1st teams from countries like the Faroe Islands.

It's a simple question of inclusion v's exclusion and clearly you prefer the latter.

Will you just give up on this, you are wrong about these countries and their teams. You are considering Dutch, German and French teams "****" as you put it which is absolute madness. BATE and Plzen (if they manage to hold out against Copenhagen) would be great additions to the group stage. Grow up and watch some other leagues apart from the Premiership and unless you really are as thick as you make yourself out to be you will change your opinion.

This happens to lots of 'smaller teams' not just Blackpool. If you rewrote history for every perceived bad refereeing decision then probably loads of teams wouldn't have gone down.

And, as someone pointed out yesterday, Spurs would probably have beaten Man Utd about 5 times over the last few years.

Backpool went down cos they couldn't defend, no matter how exciting they were going forward.

Arsenal never finished 2nd because they couldn't beat teams like West Brom and Bolton.

I think they rotate reasonably well until around GW9, but then think they play at home the same time.

It could be an option if you're thinking of WCing in the 2nd Int Break - think that's about GW11-12

      too early to say.

initially it might pay off as like you have stated you would be able to improve elsewhere with the spare cash.....but over the season 2 cheap GK's from teams likely to be in a relegation battle is probably isnt a good move.

A bit but should yeild a lot of save points but is that going to be worth more than clean sheets + the odd save point. I'd look at given or frediel

Have got Given at the mo, would be downgrading him to Vorm. Other options are downgrading Nani or Baines.

I know baines is expensive but his free kicks and crossing is awesome so i'd keep him and downgrade nani. Cahill or adam are options but I was at the match last night and I think either anderson or cleverly could grab good points if you want to stick with utd.

Sorry if this has been asked before but when is the first price rise going to happen? was going to do zomora->Long and long is in the price rise zone on total fpl.

dont think anyone knows about the rises/falls

cahill has an illness but it doesnt sound too serious therefore i expect him to be fit.

I would ignore the price rises and falls for now unless you cant afford them to happen as the system seems unpredictable

Bet365 will enable you to look at the last 6 games between any team at any given time and you don't have to be registered to use it. Just go to footy bets and click on the thingy that looks like a bar chart then amend the teams to your choosing.

I know this doesn't provide all the info you need but every little helps!

I reckon SAF will want to use a proper defensive midfielder against the stronger teams (especially away) and Fletcher and Carrick will need to get some game time to be ready for that I suppose. Otherwise I don't see any reason as why to break the Anderson/Cleverley partnership up as long as it's working.

      Bit speculative.

Yeah you're probably right, I reckon that Anderson is a dead cert and maybe Cleverley will be rotated for Carrick / Fletcher for bigger games. But in most games I think the massive boost of energy that Anderson and Cleverley provide from the midfield is a real bonus for the squad.

They are no.1 at the moment, as Fletcher isn't match fit / hasn't played in months and Carrick is bench warming with the 400 year old giggs. A lot depends on whether another midfielder appears before 1st sept too.

Im certainly not worried about Torres , anyone captaining him is mad imo? Hes been terrible for at least a year now.

Does anyone think that Bolton might be a force to be reckoned with once their tough fixtures are over?
I can see a really good team, especially if the rumoured signings (SWP, Boyata) occur. I think we'd line up like this -

    Jaask
    Boyata, Knight, Wheater, Robinson
    SWP, Reo Coker, Holden, Petrov/Eagles/Tuncay
    Tuncay/Klasnic, Davies

For away games, I think we'd dump a striker and play muamba or Sean Davis (remember him)?

Quality side. Top 10 easy if SWP comes off

Sess imo, for his PL experience.and he looked alright against NEW, was a bit unlucky not to score. Of course Taarabt has set-pieces but not Sess's OOP and Sess is in a better team- despite what the current league table says.
