Man United rack up a comfortable win over Tottenham to join Wolves and Man City at the top of the table on six points. Wayne Rooney scores in the opening two league matches for the first time in his career, while Harry Redknapp is now insistent that Luka Modric stays put. Here’s this morning’s Scout Notes:

Youthful United
Sir Alex Ferguson fielded his second-youngest starting XI ever in the Premier League but the outcome was the same as ever. Patrice Evra returned from injury and was the only first-choice member of the back-four, although the recent performances of Chris Smalling at right-back may offer him a more regular slot in the first-team, even when Rafael recovers from his shoulder injury.

Fergie continued with the bustling, energetic pairing of Tom Cleverley and Anderson in central midfield and the duo played a crucial part in the goals- Cleverley’s cross created the opener and Anderson scored the second as United grabbed a firm hold of the match.

Fergie’s Forward Dilemma
Dimitar Berbatov once again sat out the proceedings, with Danny Welbeck vindicating his recent starting slot alongside Wayne Rooney up front with a goal and an assist. Javier Hernandez’s return to action as a sub, however, may signal the end of Welbeck’s game time, though with a game at home to Arsenal up next on Sunday, the United boss will be wary of the Mexican’s lack of match-fitness.

Fergie praised Welbeck for his influential display before admitting he has something of a selection dilemma up front:

He (Welbeck) is still only 20 years of age and the lad has a great future. If you look at Berbatov, Owen, Hernandez and Rooney, they all have different qualities. You have to utilise all that and make changes as best you can. The horrible part for me now is with having Javier back, what do we do? It is going to be a big problem for me.

Modric Staying Put, Says Harry

Earlier last week, Harry Redknapp had indicated he’d be willing to let Luka Modric move on if the money could be used to re-invest, but last night his opinion seemed to have changed. With Spurs chairman Daniel Levy adamant that the Croatian won’t be moving to Chelsea, Harry called for the pair to sit down and settle their differences, with the saga clearly starting to have an effect. Redknapp admitted the player’s head “wasn’t right” and left him out of the Old Trafford match, but post-match, stated:

He will stay and we will move on. The chairman has made his mind up that he’s not going to sell him and there’s no point this late in the window because it’s hard to get replacements and that won’t help anyone.

Spurs Soft Centre
With the likes of Sandro, Tom Huddlestone and Jermaine Jenas still out of the picture through injury, Harry Redknapp continued with Niko Krancjar and Jake Livermore in central midfield – the duo were impressive in the 5-0 win over Hearts last week but the current lack of options will surely see Redknapp make a move in the transfer market before the month is out. Former Arsenal player Lassana Diarra is out of favour at Real Madrid and, having working under Redknapp at Portsmouth, has been strongly linked with a move to White Hart Lane

Redknapp on Changes
Brad Friedel started in place of Heurelho Gomes last night, with Kyle Walker replaced at half-time due to illness. Having given as good as they got in the first half, the Spurs boss admitted his tactics after going a goal down in the second forty-five put a more comprehensive spin on the scoreline and handed the initiative to United:

We were going well in the second half, no real problems, but we conceded a goal and then we opened up. That goal changed the game and gave them confidence. I brought Pavlyuchenko on, went with two up front, dropped Rafa into midfield, and then we looked very open.

We were looking for an equaliser but we became too open and it was a problem.I took a chance, looking for a goal. Rafa might score, Pav might score, Defoe might score, we still had two wingers on. We were very open but at 1-0 down it was a case of trying to get an equaliser.

I've only just got on and don't fancy trolling through the site just to see if the question has been asked already. So does anybody know if Jarvis is supposed to have 3 Bonus points now or have they cocked it up?

i noticed this too. very strange. maybe it had something to do with his assist being given to him? They had to recalculate maybe?

Just because he is the most expensive player in the game doesn't mean he will always get 3bp's. Rooney missed a sitter and Welbeck had an excellent second half. Can't really complain. If Rooney didn't get that goal he wouldn't even have 1bp.

Have to agree with this. Under the old system, Rooney might have got 2, but Wellbeck would have got the three. Then again, under the old system, Corluka might have got 3. Ahhhh, how I miss the old system!

        Those rankings are GW1 + GW2.
He was top Man UTd player GW1 but only 3rd GW2.

They really should show the break down per game week as it isn't clear.

The cups are hard to do, apart from jumping on the Barca bandwagon for the UCL the others could go anywhere depending on who plays who.

I'd say that City would want to win the FA Cup again though, and could put a concerted effort into doing so. My EPL predictions for what its worth.

Much as i've hated the first two GW's, cursed the living hell out of my high-scoring benches. Tried in vain and despaired at not being able to make last minute tinkers in Week 1, and then ruined my team with the wildcard in week 2. I must say.

Its great to have fantasy footie back, to read about bandwagons and people taking hits, and watch games like Norwich vs Stoke with both excitement and fear, when I normally wouldn't give it a second glance.

Does anyone have any stats for O'Hara vs. Fulham? Worried that Wolves have had 2 good wins and he hasnt done a thing. Thinking about a shift to Brunt -but worried that might be a waste of a transfer given i could keep 2 for the intl break?

Lampard: The greatest English midfielder of all time, in his prime the best player in the world and simply the greatest midfielder the Premier League has ever known. Still at his age a force to be reckoned with, greatest penalty taker in the history of football that wasn't German and the best and most handsome man alive. Also an intelligent man. He puts Messi, Pele, Maradona, Cruyff and Ronaldo to shame.

According to FFS's ICT index Lampard has the highest score (133) on the creativity index this season (ahead of Silva, Dzeko, Nani and Rooney). He was 3rd overall for this gameweek behind Nani and Rooney. However this hasn't translated into returns in the FPL game...

On the downside, the Player Stats shows that he has had 1 shot in his 180mins played and it was off target. 🙁

Not worth it at £12m long-term. He was always a two week punt for the likes of me anyway. Keeping him GW3 as that was always the plan, don't want to give him half a chance to get the big score, another good home game coming up. Needless to say he needs to bag a good score GW3 otherwise he will be put down as a bad mistake of which we will have plenty throughout the season.

Same tactics here. Seriously considering Cleverley though. Two games played, assist, looks sharp and, dare I say, clever with the ball, and at £5.5m, looks a bargain way into form team and poss champions.

    Hi guys,

First post here. Second season playing the game. After a crap start I need some advice. My team is currently:

    Given (Ruddy)
Baines, Kompany, Bosingwa (De Laet, Simpson)
    Sess, Silva, Sinclair, Moses (Obertan)
    Rooney, Bent, Suarez

    Should I WC to:

    Given (Ruddy)
    Hughes, Kompany, Bosingwa, Enrique, Simpson
    Sess, Silva, Young, Brunt, Jarvis
    Rooney, Suarez, Long

I like the balance of the second team and it's the team I nearly picked with the free WC. Bent to Long is a bit of a downgrade but Long could have a great season.

      He's consistent but unreliable.

He could score brilliantly away at ManUtd away but do nothing against Wolves at home. Therefore, he's not a good captain pick.

He worked out just fine as captain this week. As for "consistent but unreliable" ,that doesn't even make sense.

He's someone who can guarantee you points, but in order to get them, you have to keep him in your team for a while.

Some weeks he'll do nothing, some weeks he'll score big. It's had to know when though.

So, who is guaranteed to do something every single week? For if I knew that maybe this game would be a little easier 😀

he is a good captain pick because he scores consistently. the reason he does nothing some games is because he mostly sits between the two centre backs waiting for a through ball so if he doesnt get it and no chances fall to him, it seems as if hes done nothing

They're all strong options to be honest; at the front of the queue. Non of them can be rotated (unlike O and M), although C can be viewed very differently in Europe so you might want to stay clear. If I had to pick one, I'd go for the plosive potential of B. What are you're other vowels like?

On a less serious note whats the better Torres situation remedy (post norwich game):

    a) Straight swap for rooney

    b) Swap for Odemwingie and upgrade O'Hara to a 10.5 mid (already have silva)

Van Persie if you can afford, if not Aguero, even if you have Silva.
