Two games into the season and Chelsea have struggled to make much of an impression. Andre Villas-Boas’ side have dominated both their opening fixtures in terms of possession – 66% at Stoke followed by 67% at home to West Brom on Saturday evening – but it’s already obvious that in order to implement the new manager’s philosophy, more creativity in the key attacking areas is needed.

At present, both full-backs, Ashley Cole and Jose Bosingwa, have carried the game to Chelsea’s opponents more than any Blues player. Re-installed to the first-team this season, Bosingwa showed on Sunday that his attacking tendencies could be a vital component of Villas-Boas’ team over the 2011/12 season and with a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 5.5 in comparison to Cole’s 7.5, will likely rocket in Fantasy ownership if he continues in the same vein.

Both players have picked up the maximum 3 Bonus Points in each of Chelsea’s first two games- Cole in Gameweek 1 and Bosingwa in Gameweek 2- and with that in mind, here’s some analysis on the pair’s respective performances at Stamford Bridge against the Baggies:

Cole and Bosingwa versus West Brom

A look at the Chelsea average position map from the Baggies game highlights just how far forward Cole (3) and Bosingwa (17) played- the pair were almost as high up the pitch in possession as Frank Lampard (8) and Ramires (7) and both saw far more of the ball.

Bosingwa, in particular, was a real stand-out against Roy Hodgson’s side. He made 102 passes, more than any other player this Gameweek and with 68% of his distribution in the opposition half, he carries a significant threat going forward for Chelsea. Cole made 73 passes, a substantial drop in comparison, with 70% coming in the Baggies half.

Lampard and Ramires Passing

Much of this difference in the number of passes each full-back made can be attributed to the midfielders on either side of John Obi Mikel. When the ball went left, Cole had Frank Lampard to contend with for possession whereas on the right, Bosingwa had Ramires. Lampard was far more willing to take on responsibility and make things happen- Cole made 16 passes to Lampard but received 8 in return.

On the other flank, Bosingwa passed to Ramires 13 times and received 11 in return- a far more even ratio. Lampard made a total of 70 passes to Ramires’ 45- clearly, when the ball went right, Bosingwa was far more liable to be the player in possession and as a result, created the assist for Florent Malouda’s winner.

Narrow Baggies
For as much as the Chelsea full-backs were impressive going forward, West Brom’s lack of width was noticeable on Saturday evening and summed up Roy Hodgson’s savvy tactics. A look at the average position map show the two midfield wide men, Chris Brunt (11) and James Morrison (7) stayed narrow and with both central midfielders, Paul Scharner (33) and Youssuf Mulumbu (21) shielding the back-four, Villas-Boas’ side were unable to find a way through from central areas.

Aware of Chelsea’s lack of central cutting edge, Hodgson allowed Villas-Boas’ side the flanks, meaning Cole and Bosingwa bombed forward and left space at the back. When in possession West Brom hit 69 Long Balls for the hard-working front two, Shane Long and Somen Tchoyi , to chase into the space vacated- the ploy clearly worked as John Terry and Alex were troubled with the Baggies strikers’ movement throughout.

Though it’s early days in his stewardship, it’s clear Villas-Boas is still searching for a better balance. There’s something of an air of predictability about the Blues right now and it’s a problem the new boss must solve if he’s to live up to the heady levels of expectancy so typical of the Roman Abramovich regime.

Last night’s news that the club have agreed a fee with Valencia for the services of Juan Mata represents a significant step forward in his rebuilding process. Someone with the ability to beat a man and unlock defences from the middle of the park will not only add a vital component to Chelsea’s play and bring Villas-Boas a step closer to his ideal line-up, it will perhaps prevent the likes of Hodgson setting his team out in such a stolid and stubborn manner.

Thoughts on walcott & gervinho? Regardless of one taking a forward slot which do you think has more points in them?
I'm thinking gervinho might be the one to kickstart their season.

I think Gervinho will do well, but can't see myself fitting him into my squad any time soon unless he starts seriously raking the points in: Rooney, Aguero, Suarez are probably all going to be better options for expensive strikers. Early doors though, things may change.

I have one beady eye on Walcott, if Arsenal start clicking, if he's getting regular minutes, and if he can stay fit I'll be very interested. Lots of ifs there though.

My original plan was to get RVP in GW4 but I'm hesitant now. If Arsenal dont bring anyone else in, I'll probably end up taking the ceahper option of Ramsey. I think he will do well once Wilshire comes back, along with Diaby and Song, it should allow Ramsey to occupy the CAM position and move further forward.

Is anyone considering getting in Hernandez in next week? Could be a bonus king under the new system.
I'm considering getting him in for Rooney and investing the money in midfield.
Or is it best to wait and see is he still as good as last year?

I worry about making choices based on 'could be a bonus king' when we're still unsure as to how those choices are made, exactly.

He's more a rotation risk than Rooney, and I'd bet he has more shots off target than Rooney. He'll also get less of other stats, like passes, tackles, etc. than Roon.

Especially his first few games: yes, I agree with that summary.

When he got his runout at the end of the season, though, my gut feeling (read: no stats to back it up) is that he was a standard goal-poacher (of high quality, ha!) in that he took shots whenever he had them, missing more than he scored.

That seems to affect the EA PPI significantly.

But that gut feeling requires confirmation, I guess.

Yes it's a worry then if he is missing lots of shots, but still scoring and being on the winning side should out weigh the missed shots.

He score goals, then sit for a game or two during the busy season.

Walker might offer could Fantasy value at 5.5 and should start judging by how poor Corluka played in second half!

Yep we badly need a striker. As much as I hate Adebayor, he will get goals and could be a great partnership between him and VDV.
I wouldnt worry about our chances this year. If we can hold onto Modric and bring in Diarra and Adebayor we'll still be a force to be reckoned with.
How was the game by the way? From what I could hear the Spurs fans were in fine voice. Completely outsung United as usual. Too bad about the result!

      sky sports fantasy football:

"In order to be eligible for scoring, transfers must be made before the earliest kick off that day; transfers made after the earliest kick off will start scoring from the next day. For example: If you transfer in Rooney before the earliest kick off on Saturday he will be eligible to score points immediately. If you transfer him in after the earliest kick off on Saturday, he will be eligible to score points from Sunday’s matches."

Just to be clear this means I can make changes saturday night to transfer in players playing on sunday and get points for both those who played saturday and sunday?? Got 4 transfers left for the month and only around 15 points winning the month (currently 81st in the world) with the prize an Iphone4 and an Ipad with Bowers & Wilkins speaker system...may just go for it and make 4 transfers on saturday night.

The good thing about that system is that if you were planning on getting players in who are playing in the earliest kick off(s), you can see the team news before you pick them. 😉

yh good point....limited to 5 transfers a month and a total of 30 the whole season so need to use them carefully. I suppose when u use them tho, do it between match days and always make sure ur getting players u'd want long term. I'm thinking n'zogbia and moses to brunt and anderson saturday night. Brunt with good fixtures for 2 months and set pieces and anderson will score as good if not better than moses i reckon.

Keep your transfer and double up next week....

          a) Slight rotation risk with Long now that Odem is back

          b) Taarabt is due a good game + vs Wigan, Osman vs Blackburn and Cleverley vs Arsenal who mightn't roll over as easy as people think!

From what I seen of Taarabt last season he looks better than people give him credit for

ok was only the championship but if he cant produce against a Wigan team prob without Moses can use the double transfer next week to swap him when we will know more about Cleverley and any other options

I would hold off, Graham nearly had a couple and Taarabt played well.

If you feel you must make a transfer out of those list Osman to Cleverly looks the best.

I'm sticking with Lamps, that was my plan before week 1.

I feel it could be the road to h3ll, seeing as my Rooney has gone unnoticed during that time ... but no one in my mini owns Lamps [they'd be *crazy* to, right?] - so big returns if he comes good.

          Lamps is my Torres.

except he's guaranteed minutes (at least for now) and is on penalties and some free-kicks! No-one around my mini-leagues has him either....so yeah big returns if he comes good! With my poor start tho, i'm worried he doesn;t do well and everyone else captains suarez and pulls away further. I think i'll risk it cos it's early on and theres a wildcard as backup and 35 other weeks to catch up!

Yeah - remember, it's like firing a coach: sure, get rid of the old guy ... but who'll be the new guy?

Might as well stick with Lamps until the fixtures shift, the window closes, the international break is here - and *then* make the big money decisions.

At least that's what I say to myself in the mirror every morning.

Thanks, if me you're talking to. I don't play for ranking [nose in air] but for the mini title ... so I've loafed a year or two as I walked my trophy.

In my mini, at least, I've found the most successful are the ones to be active managers 38 weeks. Not 34, 35, 37 ... but 38. Soun ds easy, except when you have to steal away the night before Christmas in order to shift your line-up or wake up at 5 a.m. to change a captain.

*That's* where the rubber meets the road. And by that I mean 'the obsessive-compulsive reveals himself'

yh same. I also play for the mini leagues (one in particular). I've had 3 seasons playing it...first season was getting used to it and wasn't active for the 38 weeks. Second season finished 3rd out of 100 and won it last year comfortably.

Your absolutle spot-on regarding the active managers...pays off in the long run. You always still have that one person matching\beating you until a double gameweek or until you find out 3 matches have been snowed off half an hour before the deadline lol

I've been in the Lamps camp too. He helped me make up a big deficit last year to win my mini-league for the third time in a row. He's kind of a sleeper these days, average returns, then a couple of goals and/or assists and there you go! Massive differential at this point.

          1. Lamps
          2. Nani (Usually produces at OT and did not last week so due)
          3. Suarez (may only play 30 mins again)

EPIC FAIL. Still no price rises, made a huge blunder using my wildcard is seams to correct stupid decisions I made after the 2nd wildcard was implemented. Ridiculous this season, absolutely ridiculous. How could they release a pool so full of bugs and with so little knowledge released about upcoming changes to the existing format.

It's actually worked out that the more you knew about the pool, the more disadvantaged you were. People with little knowledge of price rises and fixtures etc. have raked in big points. I know in the long run we'll prevail but right now the fools are looking like geniuses

IMO, any 8pt hit at this point is a horrible horrible mistake. I could maybe justify a 4pt hit if your team was injury riddled but other than that, I'd say your better off not doing it (especially since it seems prices arnt changing).

With that said, if you were goign to make these transfers anyways, heres my thoughts,

Hernandez got subed in last game, so even tho its unlikely that he will start, it could shorten Welbecks mins and long term he will be a rotation risk.

I'd say Adam is an o.k pick if you dont already have Suarez, if you do, then I'd say it unneccesary.

Can't say much about Anderson other than he is cheap Man U coverage. Could do alright could be a bust.

Regardless of the price changes themselves, I cant believe how many people have either WC or taken point hits. I've been tempted but I know the smart play is to just hold on, atleast until the international break.

How long is the international break anyways?

I seen a comment about taking a point hit being a mistake. I was wondering is taking Carroll and N'Zogbia out to put in Silva and Suarez/Long (Long has good run of fixtures coming up and is in good form) a good move even though it means taking a 4 point deduction?

No need to cop -4 imo. Just do Carroll to suarez this week. Zog to Silva next week. Odds of Silva outscoring nzogbia by more than 4 this weekend are slim.

furthermore, long's 2 goals werent really the result of brilliance rather than because of defensive blunders.

if you're looking at fixtures, you could take a punt on chris brunt.

but yes, drop carrol for suarez.

Why not do no transfers this week and do what you propose for free next GW?

Cheers lads, think i will get Suarez this week and Silva next week. I actually have Brunt so thats good, although the thing with Long is that he also scored against two top teams, and now West Brom have a favourable run of fixtures he'll likely get more chances.

        Any advice though.
should i drop aguero for bent?
        or rooney for bent

im trying to find room to make space for silva, but im afraid his time might be cut due to nasri
also, i considered shane long, but my fear is that he'll be dropped cuz of odemwingie
and aguero also needs to share game time, esp with dzeko's form and tevez's return

        my current line is

        given alhabsi
        boswinga enrique hughes kompany young
        taarabt nzogbia larrson moses jarvis
        suarez rooney aguero

you have 5 defenders all over 5 mil. Do you ever play 5 across the back? Think you could plan to downgrade young and hughes for say simpson and senderos (1.5 mil saving).
Same with midfield, all good picks but perhaps you should pick one out of Taarabt and Larrson, ditch the other and bring in a 4.5 mil mid who plays regulary for the bench (Derry form QPR for example). That would be another 2 mil in the bank.
With your 3.5 mil in the bank you could upgrade Nzog to Silva and have 1 - 1.5 left over to do with as you please.
Really like your front 3 and would not chnage to Bent for either Rooney or Aguero unless rotation or injury hits either.

        vorm (given)
        bosingwa simpson jagielka (r.johnson brown)
        silva n'zogbia brunt sinclair (moses)
        rooney torres suarez
not doing transfers this week unless 11 not possible
biggest concern is injuries leading to early wc

I see Chelsea have put in a bid for Pereira... interesting. Rotation at LB looming? It seems a bit excessive to spend 16m on him if he's going to sit on the bench, perhaps AVB is looking to phase Ashley Cole out....

Otherwise, he could be played as a midfielder? If that's the case though they're going to look a bit left-side-heavy aren't they? Mata, Pereira, Malouda and Kalou all as options on the left of midfield.

Yeah I'd guess Mata would be used centrally. And I realise Kalou wouldn't be much of a factor- I'd like to see him move somewhere else in the prem because he's actually not that shit- he can score goals, and he's only 26.

From a fantasy point of view it could get crowded though- I'll be dropping Malouda next week I think.

What do you think about Peireira though- is he (potentially) being signed predmoniently as a LB or a midfielder?

I'd guess he'd be used for both left positions and midfield when needs be, pretty much exactly how Zhirkov was used.

I don't see the sense in signing him though, Lukaku will warm the bench for 20million but at least he's young, Pereira's in his mid 20s and Cole still has a few seasons left.

Yeah, seems odd to me. I guess AVB likes him from his time at Porto and wants to snap him up now before anyone else does.
