Two games into the season and Chelsea have struggled to make much of an impression. Andre Villas-Boas’ side have dominated both their opening fixtures in terms of possession – 66% at Stoke followed by 67% at home to West Brom on Saturday evening – but it’s already obvious that in order to implement the new manager’s philosophy, more creativity in the key attacking areas is needed.

At present, both full-backs, Ashley Cole and Jose Bosingwa, have carried the game to Chelsea’s opponents more than any Blues player. Re-installed to the first-team this season, Bosingwa showed on Sunday that his attacking tendencies could be a vital component of Villas-Boas’ team over the 2011/12 season and with a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 5.5 in comparison to Cole’s 7.5, will likely rocket in Fantasy ownership if he continues in the same vein.

Both players have picked up the maximum 3 Bonus Points in each of Chelsea’s first two games- Cole in Gameweek 1 and Bosingwa in Gameweek 2- and with that in mind, here’s some analysis on the pair’s respective performances at Stamford Bridge against the Baggies:

Cole and Bosingwa versus West Brom

A look at the Chelsea average position map from the Baggies game highlights just how far forward Cole (3) and Bosingwa (17) played- the pair were almost as high up the pitch in possession as Frank Lampard (8) and Ramires (7) and both saw far more of the ball.

Bosingwa, in particular, was a real stand-out against Roy Hodgson’s side. He made 102 passes, more than any other player this Gameweek and with 68% of his distribution in the opposition half, he carries a significant threat going forward for Chelsea. Cole made 73 passes, a substantial drop in comparison, with 70% coming in the Baggies half.

Lampard and Ramires Passing

Much of this difference in the number of passes each full-back made can be attributed to the midfielders on either side of John Obi Mikel. When the ball went left, Cole had Frank Lampard to contend with for possession whereas on the right, Bosingwa had Ramires. Lampard was far more willing to take on responsibility and make things happen- Cole made 16 passes to Lampard but received 8 in return.

On the other flank, Bosingwa passed to Ramires 13 times and received 11 in return- a far more even ratio. Lampard made a total of 70 passes to Ramires’ 45- clearly, when the ball went right, Bosingwa was far more liable to be the player in possession and as a result, created the assist for Florent Malouda’s winner.

Narrow Baggies
For as much as the Chelsea full-backs were impressive going forward, West Brom’s lack of width was noticeable on Saturday evening and summed up Roy Hodgson’s savvy tactics. A look at the average position map show the two midfield wide men, Chris Brunt (11) and James Morrison (7) stayed narrow and with both central midfielders, Paul Scharner (33) and Youssuf Mulumbu (21) shielding the back-four, Villas-Boas’ side were unable to find a way through from central areas.

Aware of Chelsea’s lack of central cutting edge, Hodgson allowed Villas-Boas’ side the flanks, meaning Cole and Bosingwa bombed forward and left space at the back. When in possession West Brom hit 69 Long Balls for the hard-working front two, Shane Long and Somen Tchoyi , to chase into the space vacated- the ploy clearly worked as John Terry and Alex were troubled with the Baggies strikers’ movement throughout.

Though it’s early days in his stewardship, it’s clear Villas-Boas is still searching for a better balance. There’s something of an air of predictability about the Blues right now and it’s a problem the new boss must solve if he’s to live up to the heady levels of expectancy so typical of the Roman Abramovich regime.

Last night’s news that the club have agreed a fee with Valencia for the services of Juan Mata represents a significant step forward in his rebuilding process. Someone with the ability to beat a man and unlock defences from the middle of the park will not only add a vital component to Chelsea’s play and bring Villas-Boas a step closer to his ideal line-up, it will perhaps prevent the likes of Hodgson setting his team out in such a stolid and stubborn manner.

What are your thoughts on ManC coverage this year? Was all set to go with Aguerro after this week...but Tevez's return is frustrating. I've already got rid of Silva once so reluctant to get him back already...!
on another note; why didnt Baines' free-kick go in! damn it. I really hope Everton dont start as slowly as normal. I should have learnt after having Arteta at the start last year!

Man City look a fantasy force to be reckoned with this season, especially now that Mancini is actually allowing them to attack and given Silva license to run the show. Had Kompany and Silva in my GW1 team and they scored pretty well. The GW2 WC gave me a little too much time to think it seemed.

In light of the Aguero bandwagon and City's next two fixtures I decided to go against the grain (this strategy worked pretty well last season) and ditch Citeh coverage for two weeks. I therefore changed Kompany to Baines, and changed Nani and Silva to Lampard and Cahill. Didn't really work out (would have been a lot different had Baines free kick gone in, Cahill's point blank header at the far post gone in or had Lamps got another peno for his despicable diving). Not slamming on the panic button just yet though as Lamps, Baines and Cahill still have good fixtures to come whereas Kompany, Nani and Silva have a difficult one this GW at least. Fixture fixation perhaps but you can't win em all.

Needless to say, Lamps > Silva after GW3 looks a certainty.

from gwk I'd say that a man city def, silva and even one other would be advisable.

I've got Toure and Kompany...looking to get silva as well, either instead of or daringly in addition to toure.

Toure's output will depend on de jong playing. If de jong is injured or suspended then he is a bit of a waste. Otherwise Toure's box to box antics can only be enhanced by having silva, ageuro, nasri etc in a team.

cheers. that all sounds sensible. Im pretty annoyed i got caught up in the Torres bandwagon - should have known better given how many times i watched others get stung by him last year. I rather rashly made the decision to go with 3 big strikers after GW1 bonus points - thinking that i could swap Torres to Aguerro if (now when!) needed.
Think Baines' time is limited for me. Noises out of Everton are pretty negative at the moment and (as with Arsenal) that can get corrosive sometimes.
Thinking O'Hara to Brunt this week. think O'hara has got too many competing with him for points at the moment. what do you think?

I didn't go for Torres as I didn't see what others did in that game at Stoke. He just has no goal-scoring form whatsoever and I wasn't happy with that.

I went with Lamps for a two week punt, as I saw him as a guaranteed starter and on set pieces (two things Torres owners didn't have to comfort them). He didn't fare much better though, but he did at least get an assist. Were he to get a goal in this weekend's game, I would see that as a decent (if not amazing) investment for two weeks.

Baines is quality. I'll be keeping him for the next few gameweeks at least.

O'Hara has been unlucky not to be among the points in these Wolves wins. Before last week I had a decision to make, O'Hara or Brunt, I went with Brunt as I wanted to play Moses and needed a player who could be easily benched in GW2 but have a great GW3 fixture. By the sound of all the people talking about bringing him in, this was a good long term decision.

Not really. It's a bit of a conspiracy.

The heatmaps in this article show he is playing where he has usually played, left of the midfield trio. He was furthest forward (albeit slightly) than the others in the midfield trio but that's splitting hairs. Heatmaps only tell you so much though, in the game he got into the box to collect Anelka's pass, then lay it off to him again for his assist (how can that be viewed as deep?). He's not deep in the sense that someone like Mikel is. Anyway his biggest allure is not how far forward he plays, it's the security of his place in the team and the penos.

For me the only question mark is the price for what you get. £12m is undoubtedly too expensive but considering those fixtures, and as a short term punt I think he was worth it.

Owning Torres is what I'd imagine it's like to be the parent of a child who's turned into a wild teenager. You have blind faith that he'll come round and always give him the benefit of the doubt. You so want and believe that it'll happen but he just keeps letting you down.

That's the thing with FPL - you have to gamble, having the same team as everyone else (like many on here with the RMT's) will get you a middling score at the end of the season. Sometimes it pays off being bold and sometimes it bites you in the ass!

I had a particularly bad season refusing to put Ronaldo in after the World Cup incident with him and Rooney, and last season lacking focus by trying to play half a dozen fantasy games!

I just swapped Aguero for Dzeko as he's playing up to his potential for the time being, Aguero now has Tevez for competition too but I'm sure he'll do well long-term. I couldn't pass up the free cash to swap N'zog for a 10 mil midfielder next week really.

              silva is the best option.

Any given week one of toure/Barry/Milner/Nasri/Ageuro/Dzeko/Tevez could do well.

this season is less about picking the right player but picking the right man city player.

Nope Kenneth, I agree with you.

Random_Guy, you should keep Torres. When you sat with your WC last week, you looked at those two plum home ties for Chelsea in GW2 and GW3 thinking Torres (Lamps in my case) must get some points in at least one of those games so I'll give him a chance.

Taking him out now would only be giving him half a chance. One more crack of the whip. Fool me once... etc etc etc

out of that lot Dempsey....watch injuries though to other fulham players. If zamora is out dempsey may play up front with johnson. If zamora, dembele and johnson are fit then dempsey will play in midfield and while still good is less of a threat.

Ok that's it, I have been very patient and understand with FPL so far but it is beyond a joke now. Players still not added to the classic league and no fixtures in the H2H's is ridiculous. Worse than that is no announcement regarding timings or an apology. I know it's free to play but please.

I don't see a lot of goals for City at Spurs. but I don't see a lot either in that Villa/Wolves match. I would take Bent though, as I usually side with the home player and a pen might be likely in that fixture as well.

Dzeko vs Aguero has become a major problem with me now.

Aguero is the better player, but Dzeko I feel will continue to score/assist playing furthest up front and always around the box. Something like Berbatov vs Rooney last season.

I want Aguero and know he will outscore Dzeko in the end, but right now I don't see much different and that is a big 2.5 price difference...

Oh Aguerro. If i could be sure you'd play i'd have you in vs. all other Man C players. His record in Spain was staggering...and altho it normally takes some players to adapt to the EPL...i think his international experience will see him fly.

what do you guys think about the arrival of Juan Mata and how it would affect Torres' performance? Had a look at youtube and it seemed to me almost all his goals are identical, from the left and left footed shots - just runs at oppenents, not too much craft. Do you think he will have the space in the premier league that he had in the spanish league? Could he be a just a slightly better version of Malouda? i could obviously be very wrong about this guy having not watched full 90 mins of him playing

    Yaya, Brunt, Hoolahan

    Bent, Rooney, Torres

        Evans again short term
R taylor if newcastle sign a left back he's out of favour
Malouda could be effected by Mata going to chelsea
        Anderson rotation risk
Rooney, bent and suarez about your only good picks with enrique and Kompany.

well in the 2 wins he has done something whereas o'hara hasnt.
im gonna stick to o'hara for the next couple of games though and see if he scores points. if not jarvis is surely the better option

Doyle was a big let down for me last season and I can see him continuing like that to be honest. O'Hara on the other hand got forward a lot last game and had loads of shots, don't expect much bonus though, he missed quite a few of them. Jarvis looks to have stepped his game up though so I'd say he's the best bet personally.

If you have O'Hara I wouldn't waste a transfer getting in Jarvis as I'm sure over the course of a season they will score similarly. I remember O'Hara being the more consistent of the two as well and I distinctly remember the blanks from Jarvis! Whether this is temporary form or he's upped his game we won't know for a few weeks.

Thanks guys. Im new to this FFL. So there no time during the season like during international week/s (what ever that is?) or if your whole team gets injuries (does this ever happen?)

any advice for the new guy would be great!

If you're asking for strategy tips, I would say save it for when you have a combination of mixtures of injured/bans players, sudden loss of form or bad fixtures. I wouldn't do it out of impatience, you will regret it if you pick up a few injuries/bans and the people coming in have bad form/fixtures.

Last week the managers conference was on Thursday, but it didn't really shed any light on the team sheet like Carlo's last year.

Cheers. I made the mistake of getting Alex in last week. Is it worth ditching him for Bosingwa?

Starting against Norwich, only Terry, Cole, Bosingwa, Lampard, Ramires, Mikel and Hilario are nailed on, then either Ivanovic, Alex or possibly Luiz in the other CB spot, two of Anelka, Malouda, Kalou or possibly Mata up front and one of Torres or Drogba and possibly Lukaku in the central role. You can usually decipher little from his press conferences. Personally I think we line up as:
      Hilario
      Bosingwa Ivanovic Terry Cole
      Ramires Mikel Lampard
      Kalou Drogba Malouda

i hate leeds, it depends which strikers you've already got, waste of time taking points hits to bring more than one of them in IMO.
