A night of Carling Cup action sees four Premier League clubs bite the dust already. All three promoted clubs are out, though while both Paul Lambert and Brendan Rodgers had some tough words to say, Neil Warnock seems less than bothered. Wolves continue their recent good form by sweeping aside Northampton Town, while Steve Bruce rues his forwards’ lack of finishing. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles:

A 4-0 home defeat by MK Dons saw Paul Lambert suffer his heaviest defeat as Norwich boss. Lambert made several changes from the side that drew at home to Stoke but watched on as both Wes Hoolahan and new signing Daniel Ayala limped off before the end of the game. The Canaries boss couldn’t hide his displeasure at the performance, ahead of the trip to Chelsea this weekend.

Disappointing – really, really disappointing. We got what we deserved which is absolutely nothing and we were never at the races-we lost to the better side. It’s probably the first time in two years that I’m really disappointed… we have to pick ourselves up and go again. I picked the team and I take full responsibility for tonight. When something like this happens it is my fault.

Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers was less than impressed with his side’s 3-1 loss at Shrewsbury Town. Rodgers made nine changes to his first XI from the match against Wigan but seemed to hint there will be more changes on the back of this performance:

That team was good enough to get the result. You’ve got internationals and million pound players out there, so they should have done the job. This was their chance to put their hand up and say pick me against Sunderland on Saturday. Instead they put their hand up and said don’t pick me.

Neil Warnock made plenty changes for the home tie with Rochdale but, despite the likes of Adel Taarabt and Jay Bothroyd playing the full ninety minutes, saw his side lose 2-0. Right-back Bradley Orr was subbed off just on the half-hour mark, though this was a precautionary measure, according to the official website . Midfielder Martin Rowlands picked up a knock and was replaced in the 71st minute by Shaun Derry. Warnock was less than concerned with the exit, saying:

“I don’t think people care about the competition. I’m not disappointed to be out. The competition is not a priority for us. If I can’t get motivated for the competition I can’t blame the players if they can’t.”

Mick McCarthy made eleven changes from the side that beat Fulham at the weekend but Wolves continued their good early-season form at Northampton. The likes of Michael Kightly and Sylvain Ebanks-Blake were given run-outs and although the latter impressed with a brace, he was hurt when scoring his second and was resultantly taken off on eighty minutes.

Roy Hodgson also made eleven changes from the side that lost at Chelsea as West Brom travelled to Bournemouth. The Baggies won 4-1 and the game was significant for the return from injury of Jerome Thomas. The winger opened the scoring and may come into contention for the weekend game against Stoke, with James Morrison possibly making way on the left flank. Hodgson said after the game:

“At the moment, I haven’t picked the team for Stoke. Tonight, we saw one or two players take a chance to impress upon me that maybe I should be considering them for the first team. Partly, that is what these games are about for us because otherwise you don’t get that opportunity. We know they’re good players at, say, reserve-team level but I need to know they’re good players at senior level.

Sunderland’s 1-0 defeat at Brighton won’t have impressed Steve Bruce. The Black Cats boss made minimal changes to his starting line-up for the tie but watched on as his new-look side suffered their second straight loss. With one goal in their opening three matches, the season hasn’t got off to the best of starts at the Stadium of Light. Bruce laid the blame on his forwards, saying:

We created enough chances to win the cup-tie but we failed to do that because of our inability, once more, to put away chances. We’ve got punished for it and it’s worrying. We certainly had enough strikers on the pitch but we just didn’t convert our chances . We’ve got to learn to do that.

Away from the Carling Cup, Arsene Wenger received more bad news yesterday. On the day that Samir Nasri agrees terms with Man City, Jack Wilshere’s ankle injury will keep him out of action until well into next month. The Arsenal boss is keen not to rush the midfielder back to action, with Wenger blaming overuse of the player last season as having a knock-on effect.

Wenger had some good news on the injury front ahead of tonight’s crucial Champions League qualifier at Udinese. Tomas Rosicky, Johan Djourou and Armand Traore are all included in the squad and though Laurent Koscielny is still unavailable, he may be ready in time for the Gunner trip to Old Trafford on Sunday.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Want to get Shane Long for Holt. BUT planning to get rid of my Chelsea boys for Silva & Aguero next week which will cost 4pts if I get Long in now. Wait for GW5?

Is Long worth >4pts to my team over next 2 weeks?

    Given (Ruddy)
    Baines, Bosingwa, Simpson (Kompany, R.Johnson)

Holt's a guaranteed starter on penalties. Long might be a rotation risk (or reduced attack) with Odem back fit...

Cleverly might be worth a punt for you? No United cover is the glaring problem with your team and cleverly looks like the he'll start or not play at all thereby bringing your sub in.

I'd bench Taylor this week, Fulham will have to start firing soon and Newcastle keeping 3 clean sheets in a row sounds crazy.

I wouldn't play AJ or Taylor but Cleverly instead against an Arsenal team in a shambles.

Put Bosingwa in your team regardless. And Richards. Here's why...

If they start, which is looking like almost every match (more so for Richards) they offer clean sheet and major attacking threat on the wing.

If they are benched, so what. It's unlikely that their rotated player (Ivanovic/Zabaleta) will be subbed so they'll play the 90. You then have your sub dman come in, which as many have moaned about endlessly, have scored very well.

So, you get your cheap, attacking players on top teams and you spend the extra cash where it matters most, on mids/forwards.

This is NOT true. Plenty of times players like Zabaletta and Ivanovic have come off at the 75 minute mark or so.

If Bosingwa is on the bench, then there is still a decent chance that he will get a run out, particularly if Chelsea need a goal and want to play a more attacking defender.

has anyone wildcarded this week and anyone (like me) considering even with the price rises (hilario to vorm/ruddy to compensate and at least will be 1st choice for season)

im still really tempted to play it coz i have too many up in the air player

    i have:
sessgnon-personally i think will be dropped
bent- i think will get 2pts against a bang in form wolves
    graham – useless
    walters -useless
    vdv- spurs look disjointed
baines – overpriced and big problems at everton

i also have hilario who is on borrowed time (and in his own right, crap)

    contemplating
vorm, lescott (benched for new def) bosingwa enrique lampard (sold next gw for silva) anderson (i wanted him from off, the likelyhood of starting convincing me) jarvis brunt suarez aguero rooney

would you go for it?? and those that have wildcarded, hows your team look?

i should add- i dont have suarez this week (graham)

Rambo, the reason you have lots of players that you don't want is because they either looked good in preseason or in GW1, but now look less good. The reason you brought them in when maybe you shouldn't is because you didn't have enough info to decide if they were going to do well or not. This leads me to make the following statement:

        "ITS GW2 FFS!" 😉

There's absolutely no point in making a load of knee-jerk transfers now because you still don't have enough info on who's going to do well, so all you'll end up doing is wasting your WC on getting rid of one set of mistakes for a completely different set of mistakes.

This aplpies to anyone thinking of playing thir WC before about GW5. Its comlete pot luck at the moment so you need to be patient.

I do well most seasons mate and although this appears knee jerk i think more often than not youre best to go with your gutt

that being said i will 100% wildcard in gw 4 come what may (should i hold fire) so perhaps best to wait....

just can imagine a really poor score this week

played it early last season and rose like a mutha, as i do most seasons... so i think in the opening 8 gws is the time to play it anyway

          I agree 100% with Bedknobs.

All it takes is for Graham, (for example), to score a brace in a 2-1 Swansea win at the weekend, and suddenly he will look like Fantasy Gold, the week after you transfer him out, since all players have scored 20 or less points so far, so a bumper haul from Graham will put him up there.

Its very tempting I know, but hold on for next week. There could be some interesting developments with (Tevez, Ade... whoever) and the prices rose already anyway. And the players you mentioned could do well this week Sess has a nice game, also Graham and Bent, all have good games besides VDV who still might score and Walters who yes is useless.

I can't see it. I doubt Suarez was actually on the bench because he was tired after the Copa America, he'd player 90 minutes (or most of the game anyway) the week before. I think 'king' Kenny just wanted three in midfield against Arsenal.

Andy Carroll is hot trash, I wouldn't put it past Kenny to give him another nothing run. No way Cahill is even troubled with the aerial tomfoolery. Easy to scout, easy to fall asleep. He may eek out an assist on a knock-down.

Agreed, he has to get more creative, cause I can't really see him getting as many goals the same way he did last season. Hopefully Davies and the hacks leave them a bevy of set piece attempts. That's his gravy.

Admittedly with hindsight I should have got Suarez instead, but there is still plenty of potential in Carroll.

Unfortunately that potential is part of the problem, if he was playing totally shit then you could get rid with an easy mind. I just know if I get rid now he will score a hattrick next game.

Given his lifestyle, He's just not one I would trust early in the season. He WILL come into form and WILL be a problem. Just not seeing it now. In the end Kenny knows better than me.

Ah but was Vermaelen not playing in the Arsenal 0-1 Newcastle game last season? He was owned then.
Yeah he isn't the quickest player but he is still a threat and a good FPL prospect.

He's just overpriced at 10m is all.

Overpriced...hell yeah, if he was 6.5 again this season, I would've been there right with you. A prospect he is, but an utter pain to watch. I've also come to the conclusion that Suarez is the most graceful runner either. Vermaelen was handled, but I'm gonna blame that (rightfully or not) on his heel...lol.

    H2H LEAGUES

I'm getting concerned here. What is is going on? 😡

The table is set up (with some random tick box beside every manager's Team Name?) and the H2H fixtures for GW2 are below but none of the scores for GW2 are posted there yet and the table has not been updated.

We run a weekly competition in work, and seeing the gameweek scores in the H2H league are very useful for me as it is a quick and convenient way to see everyone's net score (i.e. Gameweek score minus transfer hits). It hasn't been too bad thus far as everyone has had WCs so there has been no transfer hits but as of GW3 that won't be the case.

    What is the problem FPL?

Your team looks good on paper, although we know that means nothing at the moment, having two transfers next week would be more beneficial, unless you intend to wildcard anyway.

Actually I quite like Barton, more players should be like him - boring when everyone's squeaky clean and saying the right thing like Owen and Walcott. It was just such an obvious joke!

My turn to backpeddle a little bit...there is loads of stuff I don't like about Barton's behaviour, I wouldn't want everyone poking cigars in eyes and all that. But he says stuff that ruffles people, and there's too little honest talking in football. If someone thinks Gareth Barry is teacher's pet, then let's hear it.

Which player would you select to play from the following:

    A: Saha (Rovers – away)
    B: Senderos (Newcastle – away)
    C: Kompany – (Spurs – away)

      D. None of 'em!

I guess Kompany is your only contender there, Saha may not start and Wolves are looking good upfront this season

I'm going to put it out there - given Arsenal's current midfield possibilities Arsene Wenger should be on the phone to Barton.
Whatever you think of him, he is a bloody good midfielder.

he'll give some motivation to this team, some intensity in the middle, some good delivery to the frwards and the guarantee that they finish their next game against newcastle with 11 players. and he is for free. what else do they wnat?

Fergie once said it's not only how good a player is, it's their attitude and personality. In which case, Barton deserves to be playing in the blue square prem.

I read the article about Cole and Boswinga but what does it actually lead too? They have pretty much the exact same role but Cole has Lampard to pass too instead of Ramieres? Surely Boswingas still a rotation risk anyway. It's only 2 decent games.
