Arsenal give their boss something to smile about with a gritty win in Udinese. Blackburn and Everton grab their first victories of the season in the Carling Cup. Luis Suarez takes Exeter apart to earn Kenny Dalglish his two hundredth win as Liverpool boss. Tuncay sparkles on his Bolton debut with a goal and an assist. Daniel Levy tells Chelsea to drop their interest in Luka Modric yet again while Joey Barton tweets as he prepares to join QPR. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Everton made amends for their poor start to the season with a 3-1 win over Sheffield United. The Toffees bounced back from last weekend’s 1-0 home loss to QPR, with youngster Ross Barkley again a stand-out. Mikel Arteta and Marouane Felliani both completed the ninety minutes and Louis Saha had a half hour cameo ahead of the trip to Blackburn.

Kenny Dalglish’s starting XI saw Luis Suarez selected for the trip to Exeter City. The Uruguayan again showed his class, scored one and assisting two in the 3-1 win. The Liverpool boss saw Raul Meireles leave the proceedings early on and confirmed after the game the midfielder will be out for a “few weeks†after injuring his collarbone.

Steve Kean picked up his first win of the season as Blackburn beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 at Ewood Park. Rovers got off to a flier, scoring three goals in the first seven minutes and significantly for Kean, it was two of his signings that grabbed all the goals- the former Barcelona midfielder Ruben Rochina scored twice while David Goodwillie also netted.

On-loan Tuncay spared Bolton’s blushes with an impressive Trotters debut. With his side one-down at home to Macclesfield, the new boy helped turn things round with a goal and an assist in the 2-1 win. It was Martin Petrov who grabbed the winner, continuing his good early season form for Owen Coyle’s side.

Arsenal showed a real strength of character to send Udinese crashing out of the Champions League qualifiers. Despite going a goal behind, the Gunners proved too good for their hosts and thanks to goals from Robin Van Persie and Theo Walcott, as well as an outstanding penalty save from Wojciech Szczesny, cemented their place in the Group Stages with a morale-boosting victory. Arsene Wenger was delighted with the win:

We have been a little bit under pressure and for us not to play the Champions League and with the players who left, that pressure would’ve increased, understandably. Since the beginning of the season, I feel a very strong, determined attitude within the team. We responded in a very positive way, even being down 1-0.

Harry Redknapp is convinced the Luka Modric to Chelsea story is now dead in the water. The Spurs boss revealed that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy had spoken to the Stamford Bridge club and told them to forgot about signing the player:

“The chairman made another statement last night that he is definitely not going. He said he spoke to Chelsea and he told them, ‘Let’s put an end to this because it’s not going to happen’.”

Redknapp has admitted he will play Modric tonight in the Europa League match with Hearts- the midfielder’s involvement in the game means he would be unable to play in the Champions League until February, if he does leave White Hart Lane before the end of the month.

With Juan Mata joining Chelsea yesterday, there are whispers in the air that Florent Malouda could be on his way to Juventus. While Mata can also play through the middle, his arrival places question marks against Malouda’s game time on the left and with the Frenchman a sub in last week’s home game against West Brom, the link may be stronger than just paper talk.

Joey Barton moved a step closer to a Newcastle exit yesterday. The midfielder underwent a medical ahead of a move to QPR and perhaps unsurprisingly, took to twitter to express his feelings on the situation:

Going for a medical now, still no contract offer from NUFC…….think that just about makes my mind up.Don’t want to leave Newcastle……..I’ve made that clear but my hands are tied.

    Here's a thought:

I've decided that I willplay my WC either after GW3 or GW7 - both after international breaks.

If after GW3: I can use my transfer now for someone that will gu up in price (like S.Long most probably - also has good fixtures) and fix my team more timely. Also transfer window closes.

If after GW7: I looked at TOT and EVE fixtures and it is most likely that their extra game will be played in GW7. Until then I'm gonna put some player from those teams in (like Arteta, VDV, Defoe) and after that I will fix the team with the WC. Thus I will have 5-6 players with double gameweek and be able to get rid of them after that. Bad thing is that I do not know for sure that GW7 will be the double GW and until then, I am stick with the team:

    Given, Vorm
Baines, Bosingwa, Kompany, Simpson, De Laet
    Young, Cahill, Taarabt, Sinclair, Moses
    Bent, Torres, Holt

You can see a few cracks here - no Roney, no MC attack, few potencial price fallers, etc.

Any thoughts lads? Pros and cons for GW3 and Gw7?

    Cheers!

You said there yourself, no Rooney and no City attack coverage. Torres is a big risk. If he scores it will pay off but Rooney and Suarez are look the sharpest at the moment. You also dont have much captain potential - the only standout being Bent and Young. I would forget about the double gmwk aswell. Last season everyone packed their team with VDV for a double gmwk and he drew a blank along with many other players.

No need to apologise - it could go there if they sneaked it in on Tuesday the 4th or so. My take on it is that unless both go out of the Carling Cup early then it may not be re-arranged until some time in November

Some tips that may help in choosing your captain from my experience.

Choosing captains you can either go after the principle of form, fixture (and if lucky both) or the gambler.

Last season I always played the fixtures, meaning I chose the main forward for any team playing the teams with weakest defense. This resulted in quite a few hits in transfers and as many 4 pointers as big hauls. Torres home against NOR is a good example this week of playing the fixture. However what form is Torres in? Does he really look like scoring big?

If we look at playing form who do we have?

Bent seems to be in great form, Suarez, Rooney and Silva other examples. However they are playing tougher fixtures than Torres. (You could argue choosing Rooney is best of both due to a weakened Arsenal defense). It’s still early in the season; Torres fooled many last week due to him looking good against Stoke.

We have seen that even in tough fixtures in-form players can score big. If I had played VDV or RVP as my captain every week second part of last season I would have had substantially more points from my captains than always playing the fixtures.

    So always play form?

Other things to consider are league positions. If you are far behind its likely that the leaders of your league are choosing safer bets and staying on form players as their captain. In my opinion this is really the only good reason to play the fixtures with a player who isn’t in form (Remember Defoe scoring 4 goals out of the blue a while ago, Drogba scoring 3 goals opening weekend last year straight from injury etc)

The Gambler is pretty much what it says. You go with a hunch, an almost random punt. An example is last year’s 3 goals from Walcott, a few people did have him as captain. Do it while your drunk, more likely to hit then when trying to be cunning sober.

Summarized form over fixtures for the season. Good luck!

I'm faced with the same decision. Often use my mate's RMT site when it comes down to tight decisions like this. Puts numbers on thoughts which otherwise may be too close for you to keep track of.

      http://www.ratemyteam.co.uk/team.php?userid=1782

That's my team rated, suggesting that Given may be worth a few fractions of a point more, so I'm going with him. I reckon if you use that site to track these types of decisions, over time you're sure to beat the coin flip.

Got lost on the first page. How likely is Torres to start? I'm definately captaining him.

I know people are arguing for Rooney, Bent and Suarez over him but the way i see it, it's still Norwich and regardless of form i'd put a Chelsea striker as captain, even if Crouch was leading the Chelsea line.

This talk of Malouda to Juve is unsettling. He has potentially gone from being the Chelski forward most assured of a start to bench fodder.

The context for my team is that, along with Malouda, I also have T Cahill, Moses and Zamora who are all injury doubts.

The flip side is that I really would like to have two transfers next gameweek...

Possibly a bit of a newbie question, even though I played FPL last year.

Why now that Boswinga's price has rose to 5.6 is he still only worth 5.5 if I were to transfer him out?

I found this with a lot of players last year and never really knew why..

A player needs to rise by .2 for you to get .1

So if Boss goes up to 5.7 you can sell him for 5.6 🙂

Arb betters out there, at which return percentage would you say you use as the trigger to place?

For example, can now get 2/7 lazio and 4/1 Rabotniki no draw bet for a 2.27% return

He was very blimming attacking in his first game for them, think he must have had the most shots, although most were from range.

Don't know about the likelihood of him getting much game time though

    "MATA OF FACT

Mata scored 46 goals for Valencia and made 52 assists in his 174 appearances"

That's a very impressive record. I'm not saying I'd bring him in this week as I predict he will only make a cameo from the subs bench but when he actually does regularly start he could be Fantasy gold.

GW6 seems a good time to think about bringing him in. By then we should know if he is assured starts and will be able to have seen him in some EPL action. Pencil it in.

    Would appreciate some advice

Walters, Jarvis, Mikel, Sess, Malouda in my midfield

    Rooney, Suarez, A.Johnson in attack.

I was gonna save my transfer this week and swap AJ and Mal out for Aguero and Anderson next week.

But Klasnic is almost certainly rising in price and Malouda is looking less and less likely to be much cop against Norwich (subbed for Mata, eye on Juve etc)

    Any suggestions?

        But stick with Malouda?

I think City are gonna maul Wigan next week so I'd love to have Aguero in there. Most people seem to be trumping for Silva instead too but quality as he is I just think all the City midfield will be involved in final balls/goals.

Of course! That hadn't occurred to me at all that Mata will probably be a straight swap for Ramires until he develops or Lampard if he continues to be tud. As AVB kept mentioning midfield creativity, Malouda is really a striker in their current shape.

Malouda's place feels a 'little' more secure now...

Why is Anelka classed as a forward but Malouda a midfielder when, as far as I can see, they play the same position but sometimes on opposite sides of the pitch (left / right)? This was the same last year as well!

Yes but over the past year or so, if Anelka gets a game its flanking the main striker, the same role as Malouda plays (or Kalou) for that matter. I think FPL are a couple of years behind the times on Anelka!
