Arsenal give their boss something to smile about with a gritty win in Udinese. Blackburn and Everton grab their first victories of the season in the Carling Cup. Luis Suarez takes Exeter apart to earn Kenny Dalglish his two hundredth win as Liverpool boss. Tuncay sparkles on his Bolton debut with a goal and an assist. Daniel Levy tells Chelsea to drop their interest in Luka Modric yet again while Joey Barton tweets as he prepares to join QPR. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Everton made amends for their poor start to the season with a 3-1 win over Sheffield United. The Toffees bounced back from last weekend’s 1-0 home loss to QPR, with youngster Ross Barkley again a stand-out. Mikel Arteta and Marouane Felliani both completed the ninety minutes and Louis Saha had a half hour cameo ahead of the trip to Blackburn.

Kenny Dalglish’s starting XI saw Luis Suarez selected for the trip to Exeter City. The Uruguayan again showed his class, scored one and assisting two in the 3-1 win. The Liverpool boss saw Raul Meireles leave the proceedings early on and confirmed after the game the midfielder will be out for a “few weeks” after injuring his collarbone.

Steve Kean picked up his first win of the season as Blackburn beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 at Ewood Park. Rovers got off to a flier, scoring three goals in the first seven minutes and significantly for Kean, it was two of his signings that grabbed all the goals- the former Barcelona midfielder Ruben Rochina scored twice while David Goodwillie also netted.

On-loan Tuncay spared Bolton’s blushes with an impressive Trotters debut. With his side one-down at home to Macclesfield, the new boy helped turn things round with a goal and an assist in the 2-1 win. It was Martin Petrov who grabbed the winner, continuing his good early season form for Owen Coyle’s side.

Arsenal showed a real strength of character to send Udinese crashing out of the Champions League qualifiers. Despite going a goal behind, the Gunners proved too good for their hosts and thanks to goals from Robin Van Persie and Theo Walcott, as well as an outstanding penalty save from Wojciech Szczesny, cemented their place in the Group Stages with a morale-boosting victory. Arsene Wenger was delighted with the win:

We have been a little bit under pressure and for us not to play the Champions League and with the players who left, that pressure would’ve increased, understandably. Since the beginning of the season, I feel a very strong, determined attitude within the team. We responded in a very positive way, even being down 1-0.

Harry Redknapp is convinced the Luka Modric to Chelsea story is now dead in the water. The Spurs boss revealed that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy had spoken to the Stamford Bridge club and told them to forgot about signing the player:

“The chairman made another statement last night that he is definitely not going. He said he spoke to Chelsea and he told them, ‘Let’s put an end to this because it’s not going to happen’.”

Redknapp has admitted he will play Modric tonight in the Europa League match with Hearts- the midfielder’s involvement in the game means he would be unable to play in the Champions League until February, if he does leave White Hart Lane before the end of the month.

With Juan Mata joining Chelsea yesterday, there are whispers in the air that Florent Malouda could be on his way to Juventus. While Mata can also play through the middle, his arrival places question marks against Malouda’s game time on the left and with the Frenchman a sub in last week’s home game against West Brom, the link may be stronger than just paper talk.

Joey Barton moved a step closer to a Newcastle exit yesterday. The midfielder underwent a medical ahead of a move to QPR and perhaps unsurprisingly, took to twitter to express his feelings on the situation:

Going for a medical now, still no contract offer from NUFC…….think that just about makes my mind up.Don’t want to leave Newcastle……..I’ve made that clear but my hands are tied.

Hmm Need a 5.0 mid to replace Moses if he isnt going to play. Any suggestions? Looking through all the players, Obertan is probably the only one who stands out, but how assured is he of a starting role again?!

Not easy. De Laet score flatters him at the moment. He didn't score in his 30+ appearances last season. Whereas Smalling will probably get sidelined when there's a fit manu defence.

Nothing between sess and moses -- potential if not tangible.

I'd get off the fence on the da laet side.

A for me, but not necessarily with Moses as your 5.0. De Laet isn't going to keep up his scoring exploits, and Smalling will get plenty of games with Rafael, Vidic and Rio out (although Rio's close to a return.)

Might be something to do with Arsenal fixture's from GW4. Suprised you didn't cop that? Imo PVP will be a better shout anyway, but Walcott a pretty close second.

One good game, yes, but at this stage of the season there is not much else to go on.
Also there is a lack of midfield big hitters this season, and too many striker options.
Im not sure how ill get RVP in so may go with Walcott instead??

No, Garg ... here in the US we do halftime interviews, sometimes even an interview *during the match*

They're utter shite and amount to tired cliches meant to give us an 'inside look' ... evidently into a press officers talking points.

"Coach, can you tell us how you'll approach the second-half?"

"Keep possession, move the ball, create chances, quality balls in the final third ... " - yada, yada, yada

-- Meanwhile, no analysis of the actual game going on. I wonder why this footy thing isn't catching on here ...

i just hate the timing of them. seconds after a passionate 90 mins you're going to say something different to the morning after when you've had time to digest it, assess the game in your mind and in some cases calm down.

I have Frank '4-point captain' Lampard - as he seems the only cert now.

But I might suggest that Chels offensive cover is not a necessity right now ... when Mata settles and the window closes and the line up settles and the goals come -- then you might *have* to have cover.

      Otherwise, get Bos or Cole.

No it had a point. I'm all for helping people, but at the moment there are far TOO many people on here with no idea about who plays for who, where they play etc. It is taking up lots of space with useless posts and discussions. I miss last season!

Think I'm going to stop being tight and spend the £15to upgrade to a membership...

    Thoughts at the moment:

Just this minute decided to do Baines to A Cole, just don't trust Everton this year, think it might be the yer we'v all been expecting for a long time and a big relegation battle could be on the cards. Especially if they sell players at the last minute which sounds likely at the moment.

Next transfer is lined up as Torres to Bent for end of next week just before deadline, but that could all change.

No realy surprises out there at the moment other than the lack of respect Malouda appears to be getting from Chelski, wondering if Mata is going to be worth a go.

Still fancy Moses and Sessegnon to come good so I'm going to keep them and still fail to see the appeal in Sinclair, just don't see he has it in him this season.

FYI - Never play with matches, you'll be much better off with a lighter.

So I see Adebayor is probably going out on loan to Spurs.

If ever there was a damning indicator of how lowly Mancini rates tha guy that must be it, loaning him out to one of your so called rivals when it's usually against policy.

If you can't justify attacking Chelsea players then he is. Thinking in ways of 'coverage' is illogical and dangerous Headschotace. Evaluate every player individually and if you don't like them I suggest you stick with Bosingwa only.

I don't think he will, probably a cameo off the bench at best. My Chelsea cover is Bosingwa and Torres, and you're right, this match could give great attacking returns.

As we don't know who's definitely going to start, from an attacking point of view, you could be safe with just Bosingwa, or a 1 week punt on Lampard if you had the money with a view to downgrading to Mata later on?

I think Sturridge could prove to be among the best longer-term Chelski options since he [played well in a wide attacking position in pre-season and scored a few goals, all on the back of a clearly good H"£ last season.

I'll be watching that boy closely once he's available GW4.

    Given, Ruddy
    Simpson, W.Brown, A.Cole (Kompany, Wilkinson)
Osman, Sessegnon, Moses, Yaya Toure (Dyer)
    Bent, Torres, Rooney

I got Osman in the last minute for Everton cover but i've since been informed he's very rarely involved in attacks. How's my team for this week otherwise? I'm looking for 2 transfers next week so i can swap Yaya Toure back to Silva (stupid mistake in transferring him out after Yayas 10 shots vs Swansea) and maybe downgrading Torres for someone. Still leaves me stuck with Osman though.

To be as objective as possible 🙂 :

He is 'nailed-on' to play, in a team who want to score goals, for a team who is among the favs to win the league. He takes pens and some free kicks. He plays as the midfield orchestrator, at least until Mata comes in.

He's expensive, FPL-wise ... but that also makes him a big differential, if you're into those things.

I suspect he'll have another quality FPL year.

OK, a bit flouncy, I admit. But wouldn't you agree he is basically the 'prime-mover' - as things stand now - in the midfield? Chelsea play very centrally, imo, and that heightens the FPL value of Lamps.

Hey, I'm not saying he's in his prime or 'fantasy gold' ... but that he's very likely not 'past it'

Seeing as Nani/Young is 10 and Malouda 10.5, I agree that Lamps should be somewhere near that valuation.

Not many Nani lovers on here, or Young for that matter.
Losing Nani would free up some funds but i'm opting for this for the weekend...

    Hilario (Vorm)
Bosingwa Enrique Simpson (R Taylor, Gabbidon)
    Brunt Taarabt Nani Silva (Tiote)
    Torres Suarez Rooney(C)

I have Nani, gonna ditch him and get Hernandez in soon though. I had a dream about Ashley Young scoring a volley for five yeards last night though, I think I might get him in this week.

Looks like Young has stolen some of Nani's thunder this season. I have absolutely no stats to back up that claim, but that's my opinion after the two first games.

Both look like good long term prospects, but I don't think Nani will be as much of a must have as last season. Probably get his fair share of points, and due a goal/assist now.

Why does Paul Jewell keep buying attacking players for Ipswich when they need a defense? Madriditis.

oi. Jimmy Bullard is a GREAT signing! he's obviously taken the view that 7-7 is a better result than 7-1! We've missed a creative midfielder since Magilton (!). Added Sonko to the ranks today as well. Hopefully pick up another centre back from Stoke when they finally stop buying!

Adding Sonko to the ranks is by no means a good thing. Being a Hull fan, I have to agree that Bullard is a good signing despite being a **** off the pitch. But having Sonko on loan for a season at Hull, I can safely say 7-1 will soon be turning to 10-1

Sonko was awful at Pompey last season as well according to a couple of season ticket holders down there that I know. Having said that, he will still be a better option than Ainsley or Smith at the back.

Hopefully we can get some quality in on loan once the tranfer window shuts as we still need another CB, RB and DM.

If Jimmy stays fit he will be a fantastic signing (big if I know!)

    Hey guys,

This week which one would you bench out of this rubbish bunch:

Moses (if fit), Saha (if fit), O'Hara (has fit bird)

    Cheers guys

I'd bench Saha to be honest as Anichebe had a decent game last night and it looks like he will only be a sub this weekend.

I really think team value is critical this year. Last year there were so many cheap good players, Adam, Carroll etc that it didn't matter. But this year getting an extra 5 million would be the difference between a Mikel and a Mata.

I agree to the extent that I would buy someone early in order to benefit from the price rise. However I won't pre-meditate my wildcard for a certain week in order to 'make some money'. I did that last year and made about 0.2 over the international break.

Points are obviously more important than cash, you may have 5m extra ut its no good if you are 50 points down on what you could've been if you played your wildcard at a more opportune moment

I tend not to worry too much about the team value... if you have decent players in the squad it tends to creep up anyway
