Spurs, Fulham and Stoke all comfortably qualify for the Europa League Group stages, though Martin Jol’s joy was tempered by a leg injury to John Arne Riise. Harry Redknapp starts to bring in the loan stars, with Craig Bellamy and Joe Cole next up on his radar. Arsene Wenger looks to France for midfield replenishments, while David Gill declares Man United’s summer spending is now at an end. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Fulham progressed to the Europa League group stages last night with a 3-1 aggregate win over Dnipro. The triumph was overshadowed by what Martin Jol described as a serious leg injury to John Arne Riise. While we await more on the prognosis, Fantasy managers will no doubt be eyeing up Riise’s replacement Matthew Briggs as a possible cheap alternative- the left-back comes in at 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Spurs also eased into the group stages with a 5-0 aggregate win over Hearts. Five-up from the first leg, Harry Redknapp fielded a few youngsters for last night’s return clash, though Tom Huddlestone played the full ninety minutes and will come into contention for a starting slot for Sunday’s home clash with Man City. . Redknapp also announced that Luka Modric will play against Roberto Mancini’s side.

Redknapp has continued his summer recruitment drive. Acquisitions have been thin on the ground for Spurs but yesterday saw two new names make their way to White Hart Lane on season-long loans: Juventus attacking midfielder Yago Falque and, of course, Man City’s former Gunner Emmanuel Adebayor. Redknapp is itching for more, though, and has even mentioned Joe Cole as a possibility.

Craig Bellamy also comes into the equation for Harry- Man City are desperate to get the player off their books and may even pay off the remainder of his contract in order to ensure his exit. The Welshman has also been linked with a return to former club Liverpool.

Arsene Wenger has turned to his native France in the hunt for new midfield recruits. The likes of Marvin Martin and Yann MVila are on the Gunners bosses radar ahead of next Wednesday’s transfer deadline.

Newcastle were the final Premier League team to play in the Carling Cup this week and Ryan Taylor once again showed his eye for a killer free-kick for the second game on the trot. Sammy Ameobi spared Alan Pardew’s blushes with his first Magpies goal late in injury time to ensure his side’s progression.

Tony Pulis fielded a strong line-up as Stoke beat FC Thun 4-1 at home to book a place in the Europa League group stages. Robert Huth and Matt Etherington missed out due to suspension, while Jermaine Pennant recovered from a weekend knock sustained at Norwich to take his place in the first X. Kenwyne Jones continued his strong start to the new campaign with a brace and Matthew Upson got his Potters career off to a good start with the opener.

Man United chief executive David Gill reckons the club are done buying for the season ahead. The champions have been linked with a move for Wesley Sneijder all summer but the Dutchman’s astronomical wage demands, coupled with the recent performances of the likes of Tom Cleverley and Anderson in central midfield areas, means United are now content with their current squad and Gill said yesterday:

I don’t think there will be another arrival. We’re very comfortable with that. We’ve looked at various players but we’re comfortable with the squad. We’ll progress now and I’m sure Sir Alex will get the best out of them over the next few months. We’re very happy with the squad. We’ve made some great additions and are well equipped for the months ahead.

Hey guys, first year doing this comp so would appreciate any advice, havent scored so well yet!

    Hilario (Al Habsi)
    Bosingwa/Jagielka/Simpson (Kompany/Hughes)
    Silva/Jarvis/Nani/NZogbia (Moses)
    Fletcher/Suarez (c)/Torres

I am thinking to either swap Jagielka or Hughes for Jose Enrique but not sure whether everton or fulham are likely to return more clean sheets, any advice?

    Cheers

Torres is awful. Last goal scored? What happened at home vs West Brom? Yes, he looked better but no results again. YES leave him out of lineup is GREAT advice

Also disagree, you can't put a player in and then take him out just before Norwich at home. If he doesn't score then take him not, not before.

Torres have played well both games. Have you even seen the games?

The problem is that the midfield have played like shit and not managed to play him enough balls. That will change with his spanish fellow on the field.

Taking Torres out would only make sense if he were unlikely to get much pitch time.

You might want to check the odds on Torres to score. 12/1 for hat-trick!!

This isn't aimed at this poster in particular, just the general chat from people about shipping Torres out.

If one week, however bad (and it wasn't that bad!), from Torres, makes you not want him so badly that you're willing to spend a precious transfer on getting him out before Norwich at home, you were an utter Fantasy moron to buy him in the first place.

You can't run your Fantasy team based on mood swings. Oh let's jump on this bandwagon! Oh, they didn't do anything, let's dump them out again! That's revolution not evolution, and you'll be nothing more than a lucky bu**er if you succeed by that tactic.

      Seriously consider the following:

Downgrade at least 1 def, if not 2 to 4millions (De Laet, Simpson, or even 4.5millions such as Senderos, Brown, Woodgate) I would downgrade Alex and Jag (as doubling up on one teams def/gk is a risk).

Also look at changing your keeper(s).

Midfield?? What can I say. Keep Silva, maybe O'hara (but other Wolves prospects look beeter such as Jarvis or Hunt), and change the rest. Young/Nani for Man U coverage, maybe take an early punt on Mata, and get in some cheapies who will play regularily and score points (Moses, Sinclair, Taarabt etc).

Up front - upgrade graham for a big striker - RVP, Aguero, Rooney.

What I'm trying to say basically is use your wildcard

I was looking at the captain Poll, and see Bent is up above Rooney and Torres.
Granted, Rooney is playing against (apparently) tougher opposition, Arsenal, and Torres looks woefully lacking form, Bent is not as stand out as you would imagine.

In 2 games so far he has 1 goal and 1 assist.
    Sounds impressive.
The assist was merely a pass out on the wing, Agbonlahor did all the hard work, it's not like Bent beat 3 men and supplied a killer ball, and his goal was one of two shots he has had in 180 minutes of football. So it's not as if he's banging shots in from left right and centre and is bound to score.

Also the fact that Wolves are a much tougher opposition this year, with Roger Johnson marshalling the defence they will be tough to break down, they have a greater attacking threat than before, and they won at villa park in March.

So I conclude that I think selecting Bent as Captain this week is somewhat a risk, as he has a good a chance, if not better, of scoring 2 than scoring 10.

I think Bent is the most reliable option imaginable over the next 10 weeks or so, especially in his price bracket and perhaps throughout the entire game.

Will play, will be involved in goalmouth action, and thinks about pretty much nothing other than getting his name on the scoresheet. I aggree with you, however, that assists like the one the other day are a luxury that we shouldn't expect to see repeated. When compared with his goals and to some extent his shots, both his assist and key pass stats from previous seasons are clearly those who does not care about that aspect of his game.

Interesting stats from Mcnulty over at totalfpl

"§ Aston Villa have only recorded 8 shots (3 on target) in their first 2 matches, the second lowest in the league after QPR. Interestingly Birmingham City also averaged the least shots per game in the league last season, under the management of Alex McLeish

§ Wigan midfielder Victor Moses has had more than twice as many shots than any other Wigan player so far this season (7)"

Let's look at those figures again..Moses has had one less shot on goal than the entire Villa side.

Good job Bent is so deadly in front of goal...he's not going to get many chances.

"Liverpool have a very good record against Bolton, winning the last 9 games, scoring 23 and conceding only 4

"Luis Suarez has scored or assisted for every goal (7) that Liverpool players have scored this season (all competitions), averaging a goal or assist every 30 minutes. He was also indirectly involved for the Ramsey own goal."

lAst one from the Mcnulty stat machine. Great news for Rooney owners.

          Man Utd vs Arsenal

§ Howard Webb has awarded 5 penalties in the 13 matches (38%) he has officiated at Old Trafford, nearly triple than that of the average (14%) of the rest of Man Utd's home games in that time. Man Utd have been awarded penalties in the last two fixtures between these two team at Old Trafford, Rooney scored one and missed one

§ Arsenal have scored only 8 goals in 19 Premier League visits to Old Trafford

§ Wayne Rooney has scored in three of his last five appearances against Arsenal

I can't remember who Chelsea played but I remember when Drogba missed a penalty in the last minute and I think I captained him too. :S Reckon he would have got 3 bps if he scored it too.

Nice stats! Where is the (positive) one for Torres? Like "In their last 3 encounters Torres scored 4 hattricks against Norwich". Do it, no one will check.

Actually there is hope re Torres, seems he is far more likely to score against the weaker teams (no brainer really) and Norwich's record against Chelsea is dire. This looks like the right fixture to captain Lamps...its got his jammy penalty and runs onto balls all over it.

        Chelsea vs Norwich

§ Fernando Torres has only managed a solitary goal in a Chelsea shirt in 16 games, however there is still hope for fantasy managers as they face newly promoted Norwich who shipped 4 at home to MK Dons in the week. Looking at last seasons total, 8 of Torres' 10 goals in the league last season were against bottom half opposition. The other two goals were in a 2-0 victory back in November, against Chelsea.

§ Norwich have conceded 15 goals against Chelsea in their last 4 fixtures, including three 4-0 thrashings

Knee jerk WC after failing to make the top 1m after a dissterous gw2.

        Vorm
        Bosingwa/Richards/S Taylor
        VDV/Arteta/Silva/Jarvis
        Long/Rooney(c)/Suarez

        Ruddy/N Dyer/Briggs/De Leat

Is two cheap keepers a mistake?
        Dyer on bench?
        Arteta too risky?

£2.5m in bank will allow Long to Dzeko/Suarez to RVP or mf upgrade if required. Any opinions appreciated.

FWIW, I've narrowed this weeks midfield punt down to three in my mind. I shan't be transferring this week, for obvious reasons, but if I were, it would be be one of Whelan, Eagles or Barkley ... which I'll leave out there, for, I hope, interest.

First - bear in mind that I am truly crap at this game. Yes, imo, it probably would - although I've gone Everton. I think you ought to have Baines.

Spurs players I am looking at : Assou-Ekotto, Dawson, Kranjcar and Livermore.

If I were forced to do a transfer this week, with a Spurs player, it would be Livermore, because:
            a) He's cheap, and Spurs fixtures, while OK, are often away ... so not worth more.
            b) He's on form
            c) 'Arry currently likes him
            d) I can't fit Assou-Ekotto into my current back 5.

I actually think i've settled on making no transfers this week. But I may wake up at 12 o'clock to find Cahill my captain or something.

Any suggestion for a probably temporary midfielder (possibly only for this GW) with a price tag of up to 9.8?

          Adam? Cahill?

          Already got Silva.

adam could provide a good game this week, and maybe next against stoke, so there you go.

          ROONEY CAPTAIN AGAINST ARSENAL 😕

Honestly, do people on here really think Arsenal will ship in more than 1 goal against United Sunday? Surely it could be a tight affair – 1 all probably (nil nil even) – with United’s goalscorer highly unlikely to be Rooney?

Or am I missing something about Arsenal’s defence?

Now that Fletcher is back in the Man Utd squad, who is under fire more: Anderson or Cleverley? And if I were to change Cleverely with a 6.0 budget, who would be the best bet? I already own Jarvis, Brunt and Eagles. I was leaning towards Moses, Sinclair, Barton/Cabaye (depending on what barton does today), Pennant, Walters, Danny Murphy or Ben Watson.

I realise this is not much of narrowing down.

you narrowed, I expand - gutierrez or obertan. cabaye played def midfielder yesterday against scunthorpe, so not him then.
