Spurs, Fulham and Stoke all comfortably qualify for the Europa League Group stages, though Martin Jol’s joy was tempered by a leg injury to John Arne Riise. Harry Redknapp starts to bring in the loan stars, with Craig Bellamy and Joe Cole next up on his radar. Arsene Wenger looks to France for midfield replenishments, while David Gill declares Man United’s summer spending is now at an end. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Fulham progressed to the Europa League group stages last night with a 3-1 aggregate win over Dnipro. The triumph was overshadowed by what Martin Jol described as a serious leg injury to John Arne Riise. While we await more on the prognosis, Fantasy managers will no doubt be eyeing up Riise’s replacement Matthew Briggs as a possible cheap alternative- the left-back comes in at 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Spurs also eased into the group stages with a 5-0 aggregate win over Hearts. Five-up from the first leg, Harry Redknapp fielded a few youngsters for last night’s return clash, though Tom Huddlestone played the full ninety minutes and will come into contention for a starting slot for Sunday’s home clash with Man City. . Redknapp also announced that Luka Modric will play against Roberto Mancini’s side.

Redknapp has continued his summer recruitment drive. Acquisitions have been thin on the ground for Spurs but yesterday saw two new names make their way to White Hart Lane on season-long loans: Juventus attacking midfielder Yago Falque and, of course, Man City’s former Gunner Emmanuel Adebayor. Redknapp is itching for more, though, and has even mentioned Joe Cole as a possibility.

Craig Bellamy also comes into the equation for Harry- Man City are desperate to get the player off their books and may even pay off the remainder of his contract in order to ensure his exit. The Welshman has also been linked with a return to former club Liverpool.

Arsene Wenger has turned to his native France in the hunt for new midfield recruits. The likes of Marvin Martin and Yann MVila are on the Gunners bosses radar ahead of next Wednesday’s transfer deadline.

Newcastle were the final Premier League team to play in the Carling Cup this week and Ryan Taylor once again showed his eye for a killer free-kick for the second game on the trot. Sammy Ameobi spared Alan Pardew’s blushes with his first Magpies goal late in injury time to ensure his side’s progression.

Tony Pulis fielded a strong line-up as Stoke beat FC Thun 4-1 at home to book a place in the Europa League group stages. Robert Huth and Matt Etherington missed out due to suspension, while Jermaine Pennant recovered from a weekend knock sustained at Norwich to take his place in the first X. Kenwyne Jones continued his strong start to the new campaign with a brace and Matthew Upson got his Potters career off to a good start with the opener.

Man United chief executive David Gill reckons the club are done buying for the season ahead. The champions have been linked with a move for Wesley Sneijder all summer but the Dutchman’s astronomical wage demands, coupled with the recent performances of the likes of Tom Cleverley and Anderson in central midfield areas, means United are now content with their current squad and Gill said yesterday:

I don’t think there will be another arrival. We’re very comfortable with that. We’ve looked at various players but we’re comfortable with the squad. We’ll progress now and I’m sure Sir Alex will get the best out of them over the next few months. We’re very happy with the squad. We’ve made some great additions and are well equipped for the months ahead.

Is anyone putting Mata in this weekend or waiting to see?

I know he's a rotation risk but surely he's a cheap way into some attacking Chelsea points?

    Afternoon fellas.

Can you chaps jog my thoughts on who to captain for tomorrow? Rooney or Suarez. With Vermaelen out too, Arsenals defence looks absolutely terrible. And Suarez is just deadly no matter what.

So Rooney (c) or Suarez (c).

    Thank you, in advance 🙂

I didnt like the way Downing played one bit. Too many long range rubbish shots. Not enough crosses. Played like a selfish bitch IMO. Ballhogged the whole game almost.

Since Silva has risen, even if you had a mill in the bank, you wouldnt be able to afford him. I'd say Larsson to Brunt.

If you're still there Rebeldog, re Spurs/Everton game, I think there has to be at least two weeks notice of rearranged fixture. So you'd have enough time to get cover. I'm hoping it will be November when I would want Spurs cover anyway, don't like the look of their games before that much.

Is the sensible money in wildcarding Saturday evening? Hop on price rises, avoid international injury misery and get in Arsenal/City whilst ditching Chelsea?
Or due to the double wildcard at the start is it actually better to wait til GW7-11 (I think both of those offer turning points in fixtures for a few teams) and just muddle through for now?

Obviously the worst thing would be to be left wildcarding later in the international break and miss any price rises.

I'm wildcarding tomorrow as soon as the deadline passes.*

Yes we had the double wildcard, but that caused more confusion than it was worth.

Rather get in on form players you've missed now than wait 4/8 weeks and miss out on that many weeks of points.

Although it depends on your team, and the amount of dead wood you're carrying.

      * I'm subject to change my mind on this without warning.

Depends largely on your team / how it performs this weekend / and who your good performers are up against in a fortnight (no point carding if you have a few of the potential double risers already).

Its the internationals that are the killer (they can decimate your team through injuries)

Unless of course Nani and N'Zog perform this week, then I'll be all happy again - but I'm not counting on it.

I also think I need to get in on Silva sooner rather than later and bring in VdV. I'm thinking at least 4 subs next week - i.e. must wildcard.

made a horrendous last minute choice last week in transferring silva to yaya toure so i could upgrade downing to nani/young/malouda this week. It couldn't have gone much worse - silva kills it, yaya toure performs as a DM well enough that it looks like he'll stay there, man city sign nasri and silva's price rises locking me out of buying two big hitters. i am also one of the few that has gambled on mata and i'm hoping he'll either start or miss the game completely so moses can come off the bench for me - do NOT want a 9.5 1pter.

can anyone console me with tales of worse transfer choices?

I changed my team totally. QPR got thrashed at home by Bolton. I made Tim Cahill captain. Got in Torres. Dropped Silva and Malouda. Dropped Enrique, had De Laet and Vorm on the bench.

      22 points.

The free WC cost me dearly.

What's the general FFS consensus on Jarvis/O'Hara/Hunt?

Bit simplistic but 20pts/5pts/6pts pretty much sorts it for me.

I've got O'Hara and keeping the faith.
Hopefully it'll pay off like it always does, Jarvis is just on a hot streak right now, the other two will have their turn.

Hunt seems far behind O'Hara and Jarvis at the moment. Anyone whose watched the games - is O'Hara just being unlucky?

I reckon hunt's a better option than jarvis. Not much in it though. Imo hunt will score more, jarvis assist more.
Ohara's in top form, takes free kicks & loves to have a pop. The current tactics seem to restrict him to mainly long shots though.

I currently have RVP and Carroll.
Should I get Suarez AND Rooney in now, or just Suarez. I could have Carroll and Suarez for this weekend, or Suarez and RVP with the fact that Arsenal have Swansea at home after the break...

      I dunno.

It seems they're fiddling with them at the moment. When I checked FFS H2H 1 about half an hour ago I'm almost (say 80-90%) sure I had 2 wins from 2 games.

It seems they then reset the scoring to GW2 (as expected) and am now on the end of a heartbreaking 51-49 defeat to Greg Bestwick. Ah well, just glad to see we are actually going to have H2H leagues this year!

      S Taylor 9
      Brown 1= 19pts. Team scored 75pt

Only 1 of my bench got bps.
