Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Mikel Arteta from Everton just minutes before the transfer window slammed shut. The Spanish midfielder has completed a move for a fee believed to be in the region of £10 million – Arteta has signed a four-year deal for the North London club.

The transfer looks to be the most significant of a busy transfer deadline day for Fantasy managers. Arteta brings his undoubted playmaking abilities to the Emirates, alongside tonight’s loan signing of Yossi Benayoun from Chelsea, as Arsene Wenger swoops to compensate for the departure of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. In Fantasy terms, Arteta represents a potential bargain – a cut-price route to Arsenal’s attacking potential prior to a run of favourable fixtures.

The deal for Arteta looked to have stalled earlier this evening with Everton believed to have rejected a proposed bid that included a Nicklas Bendtner plus cash deal. An hour later however, it was reported that Arsenal had returned with a straight cash offer after Arteta had requested to leave Goodison.

Arsenal were able to complete the deal before the deadline and now, presumably, Arteta will join up with his new team-mates ahead of the Emirates clash with Swansea a week on Saturday.

Arteta will attract immediate Fantasy interest. His passing ability and set-piece influence offers Wenger an added dimension in a midfield that has been robbed of key talent and, at just 8.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game, he looks a sound investment.

The Spaniard’s fitness will be a slight worry – like Robin Van Persie, Arteta is a talent that has been cursed by a string of injuries which have curtailed his Fantasy returns in recent seasons. Even so, in the mid-term, Arteta’s price and potential looks set to outweigh that concern, particularly as the Gunners ready themselves for a run of opponents which promises rich attacking returns with four home matches in the next six (SWA bla BOL tot SUN STK).

Arteta would seem set to take up a central role playing alongside a holding midfielder, or even in front of a Song/Wilshere combination, prompting and probing and offering a goal threat from range. Set-pieces are also in his locker and there is a chance, with Van Persie missing from the spot at Old Trafford, that Arteta could even be handed penalty kick duties.

Back at Goodison meanwhile, David Moyes is left with a squad that has seen Arteta, Jermaine Beckford and Yakubu depart today. The loss of the Spanish playmaker will come as a hammer blow to Everton’s ambitions this season.

For Fantasy managers, the departure of Arteta will restore Leighton Baines as the club’s spot-kick taker and land him responsibility for direct free-kicks. The left-back appeared to have surrendered those duties on Arteta’s return to the starting lineup at Blackburn last weekend, but will now have his return potential boosted accordingly.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

My brother's already given up this season and has handed control of his team to me, so I thought I'd have a bit of fun. How about this for a wildcard team?

    Given Szczesny

I needed a 5.9m or cheaper midfielder and I got him as he seemed the best of the bunch (already have Hoolahan and Moses :S). With Newcastle signing Santon, R Taylor may be pushed into his place in midfield possibly however.

Interesting that looking at Barry and Yaya's chalkboards this season Barry has so far been the more advanced forward of the two. Doesn't mean I'm going to get him, but it's interesting.

He has a record of going off the rails with his fitness etc and has only played more than 25 games in a season once.

Admittedly, if there is a time when he plays well it could be early on, so if he's cheap and looks like starting it might be worth a punt.

Have to say I'm fairly happy with the signings we've (Arsenal) made. What do people think our first choice 11 will be - i reckon the below:

    Gervinho, Benayoun/Walcott

Looks about right. Would love it if Benayoun was nailed on and Gerv and Walcott rotated tbh, the latter two seeming like very similar and frustrating players.

Good to see Wenger change his tune a bit, definitely looks like a side that can compete, at least for fourth place minimum now.

Yeah, both Benayoun and Arteta would seem to fit right in with the style of football Arsenal play. That setup would give Santos and Sagna plenty of scope to bomb forward when we have the ball.

Santos & Arteta firmly on my radar from a FF perspective....

Just how good is Arteta? I know he's a classy player but i haven't really watched him closely. From what i've seen, most of his assists come from setpieces or crosses i haven't seen him attempt too many through balls? Good signing nonetheless.

Nasri to Gervinho I'm happy enough with. Different players, Gervinho being much more direct and more likely to drive into the box, maybe not as good a passer or at retaining possession. Overall, satisfied.

Cesc.. Well now that's a big one. We never did do his talent justice** and it's going to take an evolution of playing style to try overcome that loss. Arteta/Benayoun are stop-gaps. Hopefully they can stay fit and produce. Both a bit injury prone as well.

**I reckon he'll be second name on the Barca team sheet by season's end. Already seems to be well on his way to displacing Xavi

Agree a hundred times over. I, and everyone else, already knew they were both leaving. mata would have been an awesome replacement (not as good, but quality). Biggest tease and disappointment of the transfer window to first be so close to signing him (app we already had personal terms discussed and what not) then seeing him go to Chelsea.

It's gonna hurt every time he does sth useful for Chelsea (he's already started!)

Well, Everton have had a shit day...

I also really thought Newcastle would do more business than they did... Arsenal seems okay on paper but we'll see how it turns out.

QPR essentially have a new team so best of luck! Stoke have done really well today, could really push on. Villa just shuffled the pack a bit while both Liverpool and Chelsea have made singular and rather odd signings, although I'd say Chelsea's was better.

I sort of hoped we would get Samba or Cahill but there we go, we've let a lot of players go (at least on loan) so it can't have been that we were short on money. Bit worrying our season could potentially rely on Adebayor though... now how did that song about him go?

Based on current form and signings today I'll stick my neck out and go with...

    1. Man United
    2. Man City
    3. Chelsea
    4. Liverpool
    5. Tottenham

I always shit it and play the WC early. Usually just because I have picked players at the start of the season out of form or warming the bench

But it has served me alright so far

At least, as a Liverpool fan, I am delighted to feel confident about getting a few Anfield boys in the team this year

Not sure about Dempsey without his OOP incentive, though having said that he did thunder a few in last season from midfield. Similarly tempted by Walcott but he's the kind of player I might easily regret putting in within a very short space of time!

Torres MUST go. I would say to Rooney so that leaves you 1.5

If you are set on your other front two then perhaps invest that to bump up a midfielder. Maybe Tarrabt to Arteta for some easy fixture Arsenal coverage?

Although you have no Man U at all as is.....?

He's already started with 9pts away last week, 2 home fixtures to come and a DGW sometime soonish.Probably on pens and with many FKs and corners. If he doesn't do well next few can be swapped for about anyone without hits.

Vp won't come off pens - he's captain. Free kicks though --- arteta is bound to take control afer vp blasts them into outer space like he does every week. Bir away the last time vp scored a free kick, and that was a deflection.

Honestly, I watched few Arteta games. His penalty and free kicks weren't good at all. Not classified as top-class, it's on the so-so standard only.

Oh well, RVP's penalty and freekicks weren't good too. Might see some competition between two of them.

In fairness Arteta wasn't fully fit against QPR or Blackburn so to judge him on those performances would be misleading. Good player, should fit Arsenal nicely. Will I be buying him straight away? hell no.

Or go crazy and study the percentage of goals Liv score from corners and free kicks vs the number of left backs that can stop young at old trafford and away. For example, Young scored at Wb, assisted at Wb, destroyed a back up rb against Arsenal. I just don't see a rb in the prem who can stop him, except Micah, coz he's a muscle machine

Young has scored great points this season, but lets not forget, 1 3pt assist was for a Ried OG v West Brom, and two 3pts assits were when he just stopped a ball for a Rooney free kick. Yes he has looked good but I think his primaa facie points total is a bit misleading

I agree on that. Yet, he plays for United, the jammiest and arguably best team in the league. He will keep getting assists, whether they be 'legit' or not. Plus, he has to keep impressing SAF and the Utd fans.

I should be arguing against him though, coz I don't care if no one else has him and I do. Made me top of my league.

You don't see a RB that can stop Ashley Young? Lmao I hope you're being sarcastic. He's a limited player with his one-trick pony inside-outside turn. He got a flukey deflected cross o.g at West Brom and did well against a completely hopeless Jenkinson and as Larky mentioned, 2 of his assists were cheap. This doesn't make him a world beater! Talk about getting carried away, reality check please.

Not saying he's a world beater. Just saying in the context of the prem, he will skin pretty much every rb - even with his one trick. Utd just force mistakes out of teams. Come Europe, he'll find it harder, of course.

Sorry Flashy but you're really not making any sense. You say he'll find it easy in the English league but not in Europe? Well ummm England is arguably the best league in Europe and if you're saying he wouldn't be able to skin Dani Alves who's a rubbish defender but would have no trouble coasting past Ivanovich then you haven't got a leg to stand on.
Like where is this skinning every prem right back coming from?! He hasn't done it for Villa (apart from hopeless opposition) what makes you think he'll do it now? Madness I tells ya, madness.
