Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Mikel Arteta from Everton just minutes before the transfer window slammed shut. The Spanish midfielder has completed a move for a fee believed to be in the region of £10 million – Arteta has signed a four-year deal for the North London club.

The transfer looks to be the most significant of a busy transfer deadline day for Fantasy managers. Arteta brings his undoubted playmaking abilities to the Emirates, alongside tonight’s loan signing of Yossi Benayoun from Chelsea, as Arsene Wenger swoops to compensate for the departure of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. In Fantasy terms, Arteta represents a potential bargain – a cut-price route to Arsenal’s attacking potential prior to a run of favourable fixtures.

The deal for Arteta looked to have stalled earlier this evening with Everton believed to have rejected a proposed bid that included a Nicklas Bendtner plus cash deal. An hour later however, it was reported that Arsenal had returned with a straight cash offer after Arteta had requested to leave Goodison.

Arsenal were able to complete the deal before the deadline and now, presumably, Arteta will join up with his new team-mates ahead of the Emirates clash with Swansea a week on Saturday.

Arteta will attract immediate Fantasy interest. His passing ability and set-piece influence offers Wenger an added dimension in a midfield that has been robbed of key talent and, at just 8.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game, he looks a sound investment.

The Spaniard’s fitness will be a slight worry – like Robin Van Persie, Arteta is a talent that has been cursed by a string of injuries which have curtailed his Fantasy returns in recent seasons. Even so, in the mid-term, Arteta’s price and potential looks set to outweigh that concern, particularly as the Gunners ready themselves for a run of opponents which promises rich attacking returns with four home matches in the next six (SWA bla BOL tot SUN STK).

Arteta would seem set to take up a central role playing alongside a holding midfielder, or even in front of a Song/Wilshere combination, prompting and probing and offering a goal threat from range. Set-pieces are also in his locker and there is a chance, with Van Persie missing from the spot at Old Trafford, that Arteta could even be handed penalty kick duties.

Back at Goodison meanwhile, David Moyes is left with a squad that has seen Arteta, Jermaine Beckford and Yakubu depart today. The loss of the Spanish playmaker will come as a hammer blow to Everton’s ambitions this season.

For Fantasy managers, the departure of Arteta will restore Leighton Baines as the club’s spot-kick taker and land him responsibility for direct free-kicks. The left-back appeared to have surrendered those duties on Arteta’s return to the starting lineup at Blackburn last weekend, but will now have his return potential boosted accordingly.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Am I the only one that thinks that Liverpools fixtures are crap enough over the new 4 or GWs that its possible to live without Suarez or am I just trying to convience myself that I wouldnt be a total idiot for transfering him out for RVP (at the end of the international break of course).

I already used my WC and tossed Aguero out and brought Dzeko in on Saturday. I really cant see it not being a good thing to have Man City coverage given there fixtures being gold and all. Theres a chance of him being rotated but atleast if I have to transfer him out I've gotten some extra money to show for it.

I'm hoping for a bad-tempered match at the Britannia, culminating in Suarez missing a penalty then getting sent off, be suspended for 3 weeks and then back in time for me to wildcard him in. Not too much to ask is it?

    Guys

I was sitting on some money in the bank to do Torres > RVP after the internationals but knee-jerked Torres > Eddy Jecko after the Spurs game, like so many others. Now I find I've got 4m doing nothing and I've used my freebie. Is it a terrible FPL faux-pas to have the dosh doing nothing or does it make sense to take a hit and buy someone just to use the money? There's no way I'm buying RVP until Arsenal sort themselves out and he shows some form.

If you can spend it upgrading someone so as to give you a team that would probably outscore the team you would otherwise play by four or more, do it. If not, don't.

nasri at home to wigan - you have a fantastic chance to get the money back. he's at 5.5% ownership which make him go up over 10m soon.

i would take a hit for that. but any other decent midfielder is worth a 4 pt hit.

the cheap midfielders are doing so poor. only jarvis has scored anything good yet. taarabt i think will get better but high priced midfielders are such a differential now imo

        Thanks for the reply.
I'd promised myself I wouldn't take any hits this year unless I couldn't field a full team but it does seem wasteful to have that money just resting in my bank account, as it were. I've already got 3 City players so Nasri is out, I'm afraid.
I'll just play it by ear and see what happens in the Internationals next week.

Not necessarily. Think about it like this, if you can field a side you think is decent in the next game week then why spend now?

It will make your next transfer a lot easier because you might be able to move on a lower priced player and still get the one you want, rather than having to sell a higher priced player to free up more cash.

Yes, this seems the sensible thing to do. Thanks for the replies and let's hope City paste Wigan.

Will this Bryan Ruiz that Fulham just signed be registered as a mid or a forward? I see he hasn't been added to the site yet.

the worst position you can be in is having nuthin in the bank as it limits your transfer options unless you do more than one which'll likely cost you points. havin some cash set aside is the sensible tactic. don't tie it up for the sake of it. hell my brother's team last season got top 250 one week with over 9 mil in the bank.

I don't think you can get away with 4 4m defenders, you'd have to sneak one or two 4.5's in there.

If you get your rotations right, it could be worth it.

Also Enrique offers some value at 5.1, which could give you your 2 guaranteed starters.

Not sure, now he's on pens he's looking an extremely good option. If they get a few gameweeks like the end of last season where they seemed to get a pen every week then I'd hate not to have him!

But do pens make him 1.5/2.0m better than other options? Also, I'd definitely ship him out for gw6 and then wouldn't know what to do with the spare cash.

So keep him for those, see how Everton are looking and decide then. If he's on pens and set pieces probably worth keeping, if they've gone to others, so what. You can still replace him with anyone you want. 🙂

I'm always floating between having and not having him.

If I do take him, it would make me have a back 3 of Baines/Bosingwa/Enrique (with de Laet and Taylor/Simpson in reserve).

But the cost would be up front, I'd have to get rid of one of Young, Rooney, Nasri, Dzeko and Suarez...

A bit different if you don't already have him I suppose LlamaZA. I don't think results of 8-2 have done peoples clear thinking much good. They will not happen often, but judging by comments on here some people obviously think they are the norm now,and anyone not getting you 15pts a game must be for the chop. 🙂

          +1

Wisdom right there. Don't understand how Silva and Aguero were all the talk after GW1 (and before that, for Silva) and suddenly GW4 came along and everyone wants to ship 'em out for Nasri and Dzeko pronto.

Point-chasers, the lot of 'em. Why can't people understand the best possibility of a player gaining points in future weeks is by the quality of his play, NOT the points he got last week?

I had to get Djeko in for El Torro(what was i thinking?)

Makes it easier that Wigan is up next for City. I don't expect Djeko getting another 4 goals. He should do well over the season.

Silva/Nasri still look like must haves over the season as well.

Point taken, I did it mostly to gather points rises.

Dzeko is the only one out of that that I wouldn't consider golden (and also the Nasri/Silva debate rages on).

But Young/Rooney/Suarez are keepers for me.

I had Baines this weekend, started the season on a defence heavy set up (Baines/Cole) and backed Nani over Young (rectified that during WC).

Dzeko is offering value at 8.5 for as long as he plays, and Nasri was the cheaper option between him and Silva (and probably more promising to deliver crosses from the left).

Dzeko, Nasri increase. Odemwinge, Cox, Romeu, Sagna, R. Gardner, Aurelio, Balotelli (3rd time!!!), Gervinho, Goodwille, Gohouri, Fletcher & Mame Diouf all reduce in price

Have both the increased players (WC paying off slowly).

Of the decreases, Gervinho and Sagna are becoming more and more interesting - I'd take Sagna at 6.2ish and Gervinho at 8.5.

Follow Follow Follow, Everton Arsenal are the team to follow. Cause theres nobody better than Mikel Arteta, he's the best little spaniard we know!

Pretty sure that one will get sung a lot after the Cesc saga

Good luck to him, I'm looking forward to seeing some of the kids(Gueye, Vellios, Barkley, Mcaleny) coming through this year, Everton could be a differential goldmine this season

Meh. Mid table mediocrity will suit me this year - Moyes has got a chance to build a new side, without being restricted by so many square pegs/round holes. Got a cracking youth team setup now so there will be a few come through

Definitely Barkley at the moment.... he'll get rotated a bit as he's still only 17, but looks good for goals and assists and most of our decent play seems to come through him in the last couple of games. Drenthe could be a good shout in a few weeks, I'm assuming he'll play an Nzogbia type role, give us a bit of pace on the wing and put balls into a lone striker.

Arteta can play holding mid, attacking mid or out wide so could fit in anywhere across the middle three (or even left wing if required). I'll be waiting to see where he gets played before investing.....
