More bad news for Arsene Wenger as surgery rules Thomas Vermaelen out for two months. A hamstring strain makes Theo Walcott a doubt for England’s game with Wales, while Andrei Arshavin has his say on the Emirates transfers over the summer. Joseph Yobo joins the Everton exodus and heads for old club Fenerbache and Hatim Ben Arfa returns to first-team training for Newcastle. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles:

Only a day after Jack Wilshere was ruled out for a further three months due to an ankle problem, Arsene Wenger has been dealt another bitter injury blow. This morning has brought the news that Thomas Vermaelen had surgery on his left Achilles yesterday and will be out of action for two months. Vermaelen was out for virtually all of last season due to a problem with his right Achilles and Wenger will be hoping the same scenario doesn’t apply here. Per Mertersacker’s presence at the heart of the Gunners back-four will be even more significant in light of this news.

There’s more injury worry for the Arsenal boss- reports indicate Theo Walcott is struggling with a hamstring strain. The winger may be forced out of England’s midweek match with Wales and Fantasy managers will have concerns over this one- he’s looked in great form of late and has Swansea at home this weekend.

Andrei Arshavin has been having his say on the Gunners summer of player exits. The Russian is quoted to have described the loss of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasr as “a catastrophe†and is of the opinion that Arsenal’s style of play is bound to change as a result:

” We have no-one so comfortable with passing the ball to Robin van Persie or who ideally utilises the qualities of the other forwards. With Arteta or whoever replaces those who have left, we will play different football, not as we played with Cesc and Samir.

Arteta and Benayoun have long proved themselves in the Premier League, they’re not bad signings. And we needed strengthening in those positions. Perhaps another holding midfielder wouldn’t hurt and, as far as I know, we were trying till the last minute to get M’Vila, but unfortunately we weren’t able to buy him.

Judging by the quantity and quality of our signings, Arsenal’s football will soon undergo some changes.

Micah Richards has given Roberto Mancini an injury boost ahead of this weekend’s home game with Wigan. The right-back limped out of the England squad with a hamstring twinge but has already started light training back with Man City and reckons he’ll be fit for the match against the Latics:

I felt a bit of tightness in the hamstring and it is not something I want to take any chances with. I missed some games last season with a similar problem and thought it best to be as cautious as possible. I have had the injury looked at and I am confident I will be available for the Wigan game at the weekend.

Everton’s Joseph Yobo has joined former club Fenerbache on a season-long loan. The centre half has been a somewhat peripheral figure in recent times for David Moyes’ side and his move is another step in easing the Toffees crippling debts.

The Sunderland future of Asamoah Gyan continues to look uncertain. Galatasaray failed in a loan-deal attempt before the closure of the Turkish transfer window last night and Marseille have claimed he was offered to them last week. The Ghanaian has been linked with Spurs and admitted yesterday:

“It is normal to be excited when a club such as Tottenham is interested, however I have a contract somewhere and I intend to honour that.”

Hatim Ben Arfa has returned to first-team training with Newcastle. Given the Frenchman’s appalling luck with injuries since his move to St James’ Park last season, Newcastle are unwilling to put a date on his likely comeback and will continue to monitor his progress

Reports suggest Wolves are looking to snap up James McFadden. The player is a free agent after his contract at Birmingham ended and Mick McCarthy is rumoured to be eyeing up the Scot as he looks to provide competition for Matt Jarvis and Stephen Hunt out wide.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Hmm, been thinking about re-arranging my team (WC used) due to all the injuries that keep popping up - reckon I have a very strong line-up, midfield weakest but all quality players:

    Vorm (Krul)

    Bosingwa, Ivanovic, Enrique, Kompany (Simpson)

    Silva, Anderson, Henderson (Petrov, Wright-Phillips)

    Rooney, Suarez, Dzeko.

The midfield bench players are more solid than the usual Dyer type choices I reckon - Petrov scoring well despite fixtures and SWP having free reign at new club with a good pre-season showing too.

I've never been a fan of a weak bench as frustrating as it can be when they don't play and score well. Also don't favour a weak defence as many do - the big clubs inevitable concede less over a season. Any thoughts?

Ditch Ivanovic until you're certain he's back to being first choice. Not worth the investment otherwise. Then could use the money for swapping him to Brown (for rotation and still pretty solid) to upgrade Henderson or Anderson.

They both played recently, Alex was responsible for a goal against so I'm gambling on Ivanocic getting a run - he's a decent goal threat too!

I've got no concerns about doubling up defenders, I'd have Richards for City too if I could have 4 from one team - At the end of the day it works better for me gambling on a top 4 club keeping a clean sheet over putting random mid-table guys in just to spread the load - some weeks you win and some you lose, long-term it should pay off.

I may swap him for Arsenal's new boy Santos though as a goal every 5 games shows he's the decent attacking defender type.

I'm not sure what to do with the midfield if I keep the big defence, I could put Arteta in and sacrifice one but that 6.5-9.0 area is lacking a little really...

Good points, will be interesting to see how Tottenham do now, two heavy defeats to their rivals and there seems to be an element of disharmony at present - Modric wanting out and VDV just strolling off the pitch after his injury, can't imagine someone like Rooney doing that, he'd stand still on the pitch just to get in the way!

*meant to also say that while Ivanovic isn't nailed on that's another reason to keep the strong bench - the odd risk player isn't so bad then, especially if they have the potential to score big!

ship simpson. as u are on wildcard there's no need to take the risk of raylor gettin the nod over him. the team don't look the most potent in terms of goals and raylor chips in on that front whereas simpson don't. play safe and get someone who's more secure.

That 0.2 is over my current budget of 0.0! 😀 Though if I did do Ivanovic/Santos I'd have enough. I need some differentials to catch up after the Man U point-fest I wasn't involved in and now Adam's crocked I figured Henderson could do well, he's looked good - scoring for 'Pool and England in the last couple of weeks.

There are some good 4.0 defenders out there and a lot of people are using the stratergy of having a 4.0 defender in their 11, it's one to consider...

Watch QPR to see who gets the nod - don't think anyone knows that answer yet. Watch Newcastle to see which FB gets dropped to the bench - it's either R Taylor or Simpson. Norwich should be safe with Delaet as they didn't sign any new players to threaten his position, think he's due a pop tonght also...

Yeah, but that would give me a defence of Bosingwa - Brown - De Laet - Gabbidon - Simpson for example. Might be a bit too weak.

            Here's my team for now:

            Krul - Vorm

            Bosingwa - Brown - Ward - De Laet - Gabbidon/Simpson
            Silva - Young - Jarvis - Brunt - Ferguson
Rooney - Van Persie - Dzeko

So you're saying it might be worth it to change Dzeko to Suarez and Ward to a 4,0 defender? I've got exactly 0,0 in the bank, so changing Brown isn't an option.

At the start of this season so many people were tipping RVP for the golden boot despite knowing Fab and Nasri were likely on their way out. Now he's played 4 games in all competitions this season, scored 2 goals, they've sold the wantaways and improved their squad, and suddenly he "doesn't have any service."

if you looked at the stats you'd see that his ppg and ppm have been consistent for the past 4-5 seasons. if he plays off a striker he gets less goals more assists, if he plays as false 9 he gets more goals less assists. when fit he's one of the most consistent pl performers out there, regardless of adebayor

I actually disagree with several of your points:

''he had one great season - that's it. Look at past history''

To me RVP's stats prove he has had several great seasons for Arsenal.

''He needs another striker to play off and since Ade left he has been left on his own''

Again I disagree because his best seasons (especially in fantasy football terms) have been without Adebayor.

Lastly I still think he is a serious contender for the golden boot, as do the bookies.

How do people feel about Taarabt vs. SWP? I have room for a 6.5, also considering Etherington for his reliability, but one of these could be worth a go. Trying to think about the impact of Barton on Taarabt's set pieces and how big an impact SWP can have right away.

I'm considering being very brave and captaining SWP this week!

Partly because I think he may have a memorable debut..and partly because it's more enjoyable having your captain playing in the last match of the week.

By coincidence..so far this season..the final match in each GW has provided big scores for some players (Man City 4-0, United 3-0 and 8-2)

Everyone's an expert when it goes well - FPL is basically educated luck. The person topping my mini-league is my mate's girlfriend with 227 points, she's a Man U "Fan" and that's about all she knows about football.

Over the course of a season the luck is minimised but then it can just be a rash last-minute click of the "Captain" button that can cost you big or give you a great week. It's best to keep an eye on what's going on but make your own decisions based on gut feeling as much as anything else.

Over the last few days everyone here has jumped on a Walcott bandwagon (though probably hopped off again now he's injured!) but he's never been a great, reliable FPL prospect, it could payoff in which case everyone's a genius or it could horribly fail - which would leave many on here posting about how they could have been so stupid!

Be your own man/woman and enjoy the game! 🙂

Brown and Ward are better options than Woodgate for me.

I'd also reconsider NTaylor, I'm not one to spout the 'don't double up on X nonsense', but this is Swansea and I would be concerned with their defence over the course of the season, I could be completely wrong on that though.

de Laet gives you a goal scoring reserve back that rotates well with Simpson.

    Young Silva Tchyoi Formics Dyer

    Rooney Van Persie Dzeko

Hard to say how he will fit in. I don't get all the love for Sturridge. AVB talked him up in preseason. What is he supposed to say? Impact sub at best.
