Our Watchlist rankings – found in the lower section of your homepage sidebar – have now been updated, bringing you our thoughts on mid-term player picks for the Gameweeks ahead.

The brief headline is – take a look at Arsenal. Despite the confidence-draining drubbing at Old Trafford, it’s hard to ignore the fact that the Gunners now have a run of opponents that should present a sturdy leg-up for their top four ambitions.

Arsene Wenger’s defence, whilst ravaged by injury against United, is now reconstructed and revived by much needed new blood; we can only speculate just how the new faces will settle but there’s no denying the fact that, if Arsenal can maintain their possession game over the coming weeks, we should see clean sheet returns – even with Thomas Vermaelen out of the frame.

Going forward meanwhile, Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun have been presented with the fixture equivalent of a playground on which to display their repertoire of flicks and neat one-two’s. Gain a confidence boosting win against the Swans this weekend and we’re projecting a strong goal return for Robin Van Persie and his attacking comrades.

In short, Arsenal coverage looks wise over the next six Gameweeks, but here’s a breakdown of the current Watchlist in full assessing those other player picks currently in our thinking…

Wojciech Szczeny’s selection at the top of our keeper rankings reflects the fixture list and his shot-stopping talents, which should bring significant returns over the next few weeks. West Brom’s Ben Foster maintains a high placing with the Baggies continuing a run of favourable opponents, despite a run of three away games in four – save points will again be key for Foster over this spell.

It’s a similar story with Newcastle’s Tim Krul, who will play behind a defence that has conceded just a single goal in their first three matches – a trio of away games in the next four will test the Magpies’ defensive credentials further. Wolves’ Wayne Hennessey is perhaps the dark horse pick here – he has three clashes at Molineux to come in the next four Gameweeks and, like Krul, is playing behind a much-improved defensive unit.

Jose Bosingwa’s superb start to the season has him ranked as our number one defensive acquisition. He’s got two tough Gameweeks to come but a schedule that picks up rather well after that, presenting further opportunity for the raiding full-back to boost his returns. Vincent Kompany remains the most secure and solid component of the Man City defence and with three home games in the next five, he should return on any investment while others rotate around him.

Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen was our choice from Wenger’s back four but today’s news has thrown that theory in the bin and left us with an uncertain mix of options. Per Mertesacker gets the nod – although his rank reflects some uncertainty on how he will settle amongst his new team-mates. Bacary Sagna is more expensive but might just be a safer option to explore.

Newcastle’s Steven Taylor heads up a list of strong mid-price options with Wolves’ Roger Johnson, Villa’s James Collins (with Alan Hutton close as an alternative) and Fulham’s Jon Arne Riise (if fit), all presenting good potential in the coming Gameweeks.

Leighton Baines, previously installed as our top ranked Watchlist defender, suffers a drop while his hamstring injury is assessed. He could be restored in our top five once fit but has a spell of evil fixtures to come from Gameweek 6 onwards. Right now, he’s relegated in our defensive thinking.

Arsenal’s Theo Walcott is the big climber in our midfield rankings, threatening to push David Silva off the top position with his strong start to the season and an array of fixtures which should see the Emirates flyer continue on the goal trail. A slight hamstring injury is a concern but we’d expect Walcott to shrug this off and feature against Swansea this weekend.

United’s Ashley Young holds firm in our top five, joined by the potential of Chelsea’s Juan Mata and Fulham’s Clint Dempsey – both strong attacking talents with the fixtures to help them emerge as early season prospects. We’re taking a punt on Mata, but have already seen enough to suggest that, come the home matches with Swansea and Everton, the Spaniard will emerge as a genuine alternative to the inconsistent Fantasy options presented by Frank Lampard and Florent Malouda.

Samir Nasri and Mikel Arteta offer options for those unable to find the cash for the Silva/Walcott combination. Behind them we have Wolves’ Matt Jarvis who heads up a host of midfield talent in Mick McCarthy’s squad – all of which should prosper in the coming weeks. QPR’s Adel Taarabt and West Brom’s Chris Brunt have yet to announce themselves in Fantasy terms this season – both have the talent and fixtures to put that right.

Up front it’s impossible to ignore Wayne Rooney’s form, despite a tough run of opponents to come. Edin Dzeko has an easier path over the coming Gameweeks and similarly devastating form – like Rooney, it’s hard to build a case against him – only the threat of rotation could dent his prospects but, right now, that seems unlikely.

Robin Van Persie is undoubtedly an unlikely differential – while a large number of Fantasy managers give up on the Dutchman, his forthcoming fixtures deliver a platform that will surely bring him increased goal and assist returns. That’s enough to see him rank above the mercurial talent of Luis Suarez who has to contend with some difficult fixtures – including three away trips in the next four Gameweeks.

Steven Fletcher and Grant Holt both present strong options over the weeks to come within the low-to-mid price bracket. Both have already got off the mark this season and, with attractive home fixtures ahead of them, should repay the Fantasy faith. Shane Long’s calf injury keeps him simmering rather than threatening the top four, while Fulham’s Bryan Ruiz makes an appearance – like Mata, he’s a player we’re backing to make a significant impact on our Fantasy seasons. Right now, he looks a gamble and a differential – that may well change in the weeks to come.

We will break this down further with a series of single player reports over the week – look out for those in the next couple of days.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Complete nonsense. Having RVP should have absolutely no bearing on the choice between Walcott and Dempsey.

For what it's worth, I think Walcott is comfortably the better pick. Dempsey will presumably be moved back to the wing, with Ruiz coming in and Zamora returning to fitness, and 8.5 is too much for Dempsey when he's on the wing.

    Why are people wildcarding now!?

If you planned well you shouldn’t need to wildcard now.

And even if your team was gash you got a free wildcard to fix it.

Plus they have missed all the price rises.

Agree, I wildcarded half an hour after the last gameweek closed looking to ride value across the board. Wildcarding now would mean you've missed all the price moves and your team was clearly not so bad that you knee-jerked (like me).

I'd save my wildcard for the next GW and laugh at those of us that wildcarded now to bring in Dzeko, Rooney, Young, Bosingwa after a whole host of new names came to the fore...

    Bent Dzeko Rooney

    My WC team would be

    Given Vorm

    Hughes Johnson Kompany Warnock Bosingwa

    Dempsey Sessegnon Ohara Dyer Brunt

    Van Persie Dzeko Rooney

Do you think it is worth it or should I save my WC?

I assume you have used all your transfers?

My only concern with your first team is the Senderos/Hilario issue. You have one more week for Hilario so that's ok. Sub those two out over the next two weeks and you'll be ok.

Your team is fine, you have Dzeko, Rooney and Bosingwa to hold your team together so - no don't wildcard.

Never got the concept of 'if you have a player from the same team, don't get him' (i.e. if you have Walcott get Rooney over RvP vice versa if you have Young).

When playing the fixtures - and you would be with Arsenal, having as many options as possible is the best bet. Why? Because the worst thing would be to be right about Arsenal scoring a crap load and only having one player who may or may not be the one to score the points.

Regardless of whether you have Walcott or not, if you think RvP is going to score more than Rooney - get him. Similarly if you have Young and you think Rooney is better, get him. Each big name player is an independent choice.

The only time the rest of your team matters is when you are looking at rotations or when you are doubling up on punts.

I think the that a lot of people get mistaken is that your looking generally for wide margins in scorelines to increase the probability of your player being on the score sheet. By increasing the number of teams you then open yourself to more possibilities of score lines with high amounts of goals and there increase your chances of having at least one player who notches something up.
Of course if you think that Arsenal are much more likely to notch up 15 goals in the next 5 and United only 7 for example than yes you should go for two Arsenal. However if you believe they will both score similar number of goals then spreading the scorers between teams is a safer bet.
Did that make sense of a bunch of waffle?

It's an example, this isn't a debate about Arsenal's fixtures vs Uniteds. Its a debate about people referencing whether you have a team mate of a player when giving advice.

Some people would back RvP to outscore Rooney the next 4/5 GWs, but pick Rooney because they already have Walcott - which is faulty logic.

I completely agree with what you say. If you think Arsenal and United have a similar run of games, you should probably try get the main player from each of those.

But if you believe one team has a clear advantage over the other, stock up on worthwhile options (I wouldn't suggest Ramsey over Young for example).

The problem is you could split yourself into having the wrong player from each team. You could've had Torres (Chelsea scored goals), Nani (United scored 8 in one game), Carroll, even Silva in Man City's 5-1 only got 2 points - so you'd have a nice spread from teams that did well and got very few points.

I guess it comes down to two variables
          1) Ability to predict the games where attacking or defensive points are to be had.
          2) Ability to predict the players who will get those points.

If you have a high level of certainty over variable 1 then it makes sense to chuck more than one player at those games. If you have a high degree of certainty over variable 2 you can be more selective over the players you choose from each team.

I would say that they are correlated.

For example, we all knew that United were likely to get 3/4 against Arsenal. With United, the chances were it could be any one of Welbeck, Rooney, Young, Nani getting the points (obviously some more likely than others). So it would be difficult to pick just one.

Arsenal, I would back RvP to be involved in most of what happens, with Walcott also having a high chance of scoring, so you could be more selective there by picking RvP and/or Walcott for Arsenal's fixtures.

I wouldn't count Arteta/Walcott as Arsenal coverage though, RvP is their main source of goals - so if you're backing Arsenal you should be taking RvP.

Yeah true the amount of points available in each game and the players who can actually get those points would be related.

In some teams its easier than others, Arsenal and Newcastle last year both had patches where everything went through RVP or Carroll respectively.
In the end though you would back Arsenal to notch quite a few in the next lot of game weeks with the points likely to go to RVP followed by Walcott followed by Gervinho/Arteta.
Second in the Arsenal side will probably still be higher than say top of Fulham (Dempsey?) or a relative unknown (Mata)

      This is truth, llamaZA.

In fact doubling up is neither better nor worse in itself, the odds that you'll get a certain number of points is the same (if the teams do the same). Every player needs to be evaluated individually.

No, Brunt is a solid choice. I'd be more inclined to work Ferguson out of your squad, but with 0.4 in the bank you'd have to make (at least) two changes. Are you on a WC?

In that case, do something to get rid of Ferguson.

Also Brown over Woodgate to rotate with Simpson.

I think RvP/Rooney/Dzeko is a bit greedy and its affecting the rest of your team, but overall its ok I guess.

      Bent -> RvP

Bent has the injury cloud, and RvP is much more assured of performing. Arteta is a risk.

The Hutton news has forced me into Kompany over him, with Ollson and Ward as a rotating third.

Will look at Hutton later on, but will be at Kompany's expense.

I have this pile of shiiiii at the moment, tempted to Wildcard but Im gonna be patient -

    Given Vorm
    DeLaet Bosingwa Simpson Kompany (Baines)
    Sinclair Petrov Silva (Moses Ferguson)
    Suarez Rooney Dzeko

3.2 in bank and need Arsenal coverage obvious transfer is -
    A) Sinclair > Walcott

    But Im tempeted to go
    B) Dzeko > RVP and then use Baines to start sorting out the midfield next week

    Which way guys?

great shout I hadnt noticed that. Just hope they play Arteta in the hole, as I think he wont be a great scorer in the a more defensive role. If he was on free kicks great, but RVP wont lose the resposibility I doubt, I would imagine he will take one of the corners though. Thanks for your advice as with that formation I also am no longer concernd of Simpson not getting a game and having to rely on Moses.

Would you transfer Cahill to Walcott/Arteta if it cost you 4points? Both (Eve and Ars) has easy fixtures and both has been crappy, but I think Arsenal will do better in future.

This feels like one of the really big decisions, so hoping you guys could help out:

Already took out Bent, Lamps and Sinclair for Dzeko, Young and Nasri for a -4 hit (had one banked). If Baines proves to be out, should I take the extra hit, or use my wildcard, thus getting to fix what else needs fixing?

not in a thousand years of fantasy football. Villa's attacking stats are woeful...Bent is only worth the money because he's so accurate.

Look at the other high-priced midfielders. None of them have a history of performing. I'm not convinced with Young as of yet, he's had one good match. The previous match with the fluke goal doesn't count.

Mata is unproved in the EPL. Walcott is injured.

I think two in-form players (Nasri and Silva) with an in-form team against a weak wigan side could prove well.
