Our Watchlist rankings – found in the lower section of your homepage sidebar – have now been updated, bringing you our thoughts on mid-term player picks for the Gameweeks ahead.

The brief headline is – take a look at Arsenal. Despite the confidence-draining drubbing at Old Trafford, it’s hard to ignore the fact that the Gunners now have a run of opponents that should present a sturdy leg-up for their top four ambitions.

Arsene Wenger’s defence, whilst ravaged by injury against United, is now reconstructed and revived by much needed new blood; we can only speculate just how the new faces will settle but there’s no denying the fact that, if Arsenal can maintain their possession game over the coming weeks, we should see clean sheet returns – even with Thomas Vermaelen out of the frame.

Going forward meanwhile, Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun have been presented with the fixture equivalent of a playground on which to display their repertoire of flicks and neat one-two’s. Gain a confidence boosting win against the Swans this weekend and we’re projecting a strong goal return for Robin Van Persie and his attacking comrades.

In short, Arsenal coverage looks wise over the next six Gameweeks, but here’s a breakdown of the current Watchlist in full assessing those other player picks currently in our thinking…

Wojciech Szczeny’s selection at the top of our keeper rankings reflects the fixture list and his shot-stopping talents, which should bring significant returns over the next few weeks. West Brom’s Ben Foster maintains a high placing with the Baggies continuing a run of favourable opponents, despite a run of three away games in four – save points will again be key for Foster over this spell.

It’s a similar story with Newcastle’s Tim Krul, who will play behind a defence that has conceded just a single goal in their first three matches – a trio of away games in the next four will test the Magpies’ defensive credentials further. Wolves’ Wayne Hennessey is perhaps the dark horse pick here – he has three clashes at Molineux to come in the next four Gameweeks and, like Krul, is playing behind a much-improved defensive unit.

Jose Bosingwa’s superb start to the season has him ranked as our number one defensive acquisition. He’s got two tough Gameweeks to come but a schedule that picks up rather well after that, presenting further opportunity for the raiding full-back to boost his returns. Vincent Kompany remains the most secure and solid component of the Man City defence and with three home games in the next five, he should return on any investment while others rotate around him.

Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen was our choice from Wenger’s back four but today’s news has thrown that theory in the bin and left us with an uncertain mix of options. Per Mertesacker gets the nod – although his rank reflects some uncertainty on how he will settle amongst his new team-mates. Bacary Sagna is more expensive but might just be a safer option to explore.

Newcastle’s Steven Taylor heads up a list of strong mid-price options with Wolves’ Roger Johnson, Villa’s James Collins (with Alan Hutton close as an alternative) and Fulham’s Jon Arne Riise (if fit), all presenting good potential in the coming Gameweeks.

Leighton Baines, previously installed as our top ranked Watchlist defender, suffers a drop while his hamstring injury is assessed. He could be restored in our top five once fit but has a spell of evil fixtures to come from Gameweek 6 onwards. Right now, he’s relegated in our defensive thinking.

Arsenal’s Theo Walcott is the big climber in our midfield rankings, threatening to push David Silva off the top position with his strong start to the season and an array of fixtures which should see the Emirates flyer continue on the goal trail. A slight hamstring injury is a concern but we’d expect Walcott to shrug this off and feature against Swansea this weekend.

United’s Ashley Young holds firm in our top five, joined by the potential of Chelsea’s Juan Mata and Fulham’s Clint Dempsey – both strong attacking talents with the fixtures to help them emerge as early season prospects. We’re taking a punt on Mata, but have already seen enough to suggest that, come the home matches with Swansea and Everton, the Spaniard will emerge as a genuine alternative to the inconsistent Fantasy options presented by Frank Lampard and Florent Malouda.

Samir Nasri and Mikel Arteta offer options for those unable to find the cash for the Silva/Walcott combination. Behind them we have Wolves’ Matt Jarvis who heads up a host of midfield talent in Mick McCarthy’s squad – all of which should prosper in the coming weeks. QPR’s Adel Taarabt and West Brom’s Chris Brunt have yet to announce themselves in Fantasy terms this season – both have the talent and fixtures to put that right.

Up front it’s impossible to ignore Wayne Rooney’s form, despite a tough run of opponents to come. Edin Dzeko has an easier path over the coming Gameweeks and similarly devastating form – like Rooney, it’s hard to build a case against him – only the threat of rotation could dent his prospects but, right now, that seems unlikely.

Robin Van Persie is undoubtedly an unlikely differential – while a large number of Fantasy managers give up on the Dutchman, his forthcoming fixtures deliver a platform that will surely bring him increased goal and assist returns. That’s enough to see him rank above the mercurial talent of Luis Suarez who has to contend with some difficult fixtures – including three away trips in the next four Gameweeks.

Steven Fletcher and Grant Holt both present strong options over the weeks to come within the low-to-mid price bracket. Both have already got off the mark this season and, with attractive home fixtures ahead of them, should repay the Fantasy faith. Shane Long’s calf injury keeps him simmering rather than threatening the top four, while Fulham’s Bryan Ruiz makes an appearance – like Mata, he’s a player we’re backing to make a significant impact on our Fantasy seasons. Right now, he looks a gamble and a differential – that may well change in the weeks to come.

We will break this down further with a series of single player reports over the week – look out for those in the next couple of days.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So England have a good game against one of the lesser sides and Barry and parker are hailed as the answer in midfield. It wasn't long ago Barry was getting raped at the WC. Lampard and steve G still have lots to offer. A midfield packed with Parker and Barry ain't gonna scare any of the good sides. I'm a spurs fan and don't think Parker would be my pick to stop any world class players.

Sadly there is this continuing cycle of crap when it comes to England. I refuse to pay attention any more. Short memories I agree, but then, when have Gerrard or Lampard done anything for England?

I dont like lampard and barry as a pairing. Its forcing the wingers to cut back and be less creative. Personally I would like to see Parker and Wilshere. (obviously not imediately)

And if we havent got any other right backs, then surely Cahill will convert better than Smalling. He is so awkward on the ball, and Cahill is ridiculously comfortable.

England seem pretty devoid of pace over much of the field, even Ashley Cole seems to be slowing. That's never going to work against any of the better teams.

I think it's time to bring more of the youth team through and we really should have gotten rid of Capello - he fails to get the best out of players and does the usual: "Here's my best players, now where can I squeeze them in" routine so common of England bosses. It's no good having Rooney as a sole striker if the rest of the team are behind the halfway line either. I know it was touted as 4-3-3 but it looked more like 4-5-1.

When the best teams face a poor one they thrash them - like Holland vs San Marino, when England do they scrape by, we don't play like winners.

Was thinking lack of options may mean starts.

But there's still cahill, fellani, neville, osman and rodwell I suppose... But of that list only Osman who can play wide (until Coleman is fit)?

Had Osman as well but he disapointed me terribly, it was almost like he was hiding from the ball. He´s nowhere near appearing to be in for yet. Barkley may still be the only one to impress, IF Moyes gives him another full go.

yeah I just got rid of his ass. For Cabaye, although i felt like he bossed the field for them in their last match, I didn´t like what I saw, pair that with Moyes´unpredictable ass, and Feilani playing way too far up front for my liking they still looked out of sorts to really be taking a chance at this juncture of the season. Just my two cents worth...

I put Anderson in my dad's team at 6 mill a while back. Was this decision genious or stupid? Just wondering what people's thoughts are.

Personally, despite the rotation risk (I think that golden rule is going to be broken several times this season), he may well prove a lot less frustrating than the likes of Brunt. Expectations and all that.

What do you guys think of the following:

    Vorm - Ruddy
    Bosingwa - Enrique - S Taylor - Simpson - De Laet
    Moses - Young - Silva - Nasri - Ferguson
    Rooney - Suarez - Dzeko

Bit worried about the defence and goalie selection, and Ferguson isn't going to get more than a game in all season. Do you'll reckon I should swap out one of the Nasri/Suarez/Dzeko for someone a bit cheaper...?

I'd get Arteta/Walcott in for either Nasri or Silva. Get someone other than Ferguson too if you can. He just wastes a spot in your midfield and if you're going to play 3 in defence then you'll need to have a cheap player you can rotate with Moses. I personally don't like to double up on defences either because it's quite risky so I'd swap Simpson for someone else.

Hey dude, nice team, very similiar to mine. Wouldn't worry about the defence, it's solid enough. the only change i would make is opting out of doubling up on the nasri/silva combination, i was tempted to myself but silva does enough for city coverage, plus you have dzeko like myself. Other than that, all good in my eyes really. Have no idea why people oppose to having ferguson, he saves a bundle of money for other players, and i'd much rather have points from a defender than him anyway lol, so with enough strikeforce in midfield its no worry at all.

My team is below, liek i say, somewhat similiar. Let me know your thoughts if poss 🙂

      Given (Vorm)

Enrique - Bosingwa - Simpson - De Laet - Briggs

      Lucas - Mata - Young - Silva - Ferguson

      Dzeko - Rooney - Suarez

      🙂

I'm one of the many who don't see the point of having Ferguson. I'd rather spend an extra 0.5M and get someone who is actually going to play and get points who could come into play when they have good fixtures, even if they're not going to be in your lineup too often. I'd swap Lucas for someone too, he's not going to get any assists/goals so you're relying on 1pt for cleansheet + bonuses. I like the rest of your team though.

What´s the point of Lucas in that squad? Pass that torch to a Barkley from Everton who will see the ball in an offensive position a lot more than a Lucas, who is good for a yellow card per match.

Yeh good point, i forgot to mention beforehand that lucas is my only vice really, it's just the fact he plays in a good sqaud of pool players and usually plays the full 90 minutes almost every game and is bound to generate points in 'some' games. Barkley is a good shout though i guess.

Other than Barkley, what good midfield options are there at 5.0m or less in replace of Lucas?

Open to any suggestion, cheers 🙂

well, Wolves is in fine forms now & Home game against spurs without VDV not really a threat now. I'm in dilemna who to captain now.....

It's a nice problem to have, Rooney, Dzeko, Suarez, Young and even Arteta are all worth a punt. I've had a dreadful start, mostly because I didn't have Rooney last week and those who captained him are now between 40-80 points ahead of me. I'll probably captain Rooney because I've had my fingers burnt the last few weeks when I haven't had him.

Do you mean hamstring or hamster? Couldn't tell you anything about his hamstring, but this is his hamster:

I meant hamster, I was really worried. Glad he's okay.
