[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

A hectic transfer window and the International break has thrown up a whole host of interesting options for this gameweek, and although Edin Dzeko has seemingly cornered the mainstream market with a staggering 390,000 transfers in the FPL game so far this week, there are still plenty of alternative options available if you’re looking for a ‘Differential’. As we gear up for another gameweek then, it’s time to take another look at the stand out options that have been missed by the masses and pick out our three favourites for this week…..

Daniel Sturridge

Juan Mata was the alternative this week and although the Spaniard looks to be on top form and will surely attract substantial investment over the coming weeks, it is Daniel Sturridge  that most catches the eye as a differential. He was outstanding in pre-season and would surely have been involved in Chelsea’s first three games were it not for his suspension, so at just 6.5m he looks great value and his current ownership of 0.9% should soar if he can get on the score sheet this weekend.

The obvious question mark over his starting role may be enough to put some off, but with Drogba definitely out of action against Sunderland, many respectable pundits have been backing a Mata/ Torres/Sturridge front three. Despite his indifference, getting the best from £50 million signing Fernando Torres has to be the number one priority for Andre Villas-Boas if he wants to get on at Chelsea, and Malouda, Kalou and Anelka have all been disappointing in this respect so far. With Villas-Boas and John Terry both commenting recently on how highly rated Sturridge has become at Chelsea, it certainly looks like he will get his chance this weekend, and at such a bargain price he looks like a perfect differential.

Per Mertesacker

Picking an Arsenal defender after their 8 goal mauling at Old Trafford might seem a bit odd, but with Arsenal expected to make wholesale changes to their back four for the weekend’s tie and Swansea still looking for their first goal of the campaign, they will be confident of picking up a clean sheet. The bookies certainly agree with this sentiment too – Paddy Power have them at evens for a clean sheet, the second lowest odds of any side. Their next six fixtures are also the easiest of any side according to our next six ticker, so with such an attractive run of fixtures to come, spending 6.0m on an Arsenal defender might just be one of the most sensible transfers you could make this week.

We covered the key facts and stats about Mertesacker earlier in the week with our Window Watch article, but a few key things have changed since then. Firstly Thomas Vermaelen has been ruled out making the big German an almost dead cert to start, and will also by default make him a key target for corners and crosses. With Gibbs and Sagna also returning to fitness, Arsenal should also be a lot more solid at the back than last week adding to his clean sheet potential. Fellow new arrival Andre Santos is definitely one to keep an eye on, but recent reports suggest he is still short of match fitness and so Mertesacker looks like the strongest pick, despite his low ownership of just 1.1%.

Bryan Ruiz

After signing for Fulham in the final hour of the transfer window, Bryan Ruiz will be looking to settle into the Fulham side as quickly as possible and with a home tie against stuttering Blackburn, he has a great opportunity to make an immediate impact. There is still a doubt over whether he’ll play the full 90 minutes, but reports suggest he is expected to start as part of a two man attack alongside a fit again Bobby Zamora. A detailed look into his statistics and history is given in another of our window watch articles from last week so further analysis is unnecessary here, but suffice to say, if he can recreate the form that made him such a key player at FC Twente then he looks good for goals, assists and bonus, and should go on to become a great value pick.

Despite coming in at a very affordable 7.0m in the FPL game, just 5000 managers have picked him up since his introduction to the FPL game last week. Although relatively unknown having played much of his career in the Eredivisie, this still seems like a very slow uptake for such a promising player and probably has much to do with Edin Dzeko’s unprecedented popularity – if you don’t buy into the hype however, Ruiz looks an excellent differential and his much lower price should help free up funds to use elsewhere.

Brunt has had better consistency I believe.

However, in my opinion O'Hara's fixtures are marginally better and he is "due" a goal. I know that theory usually counts for nowt, but he's always popping off a few shots...

All said, Brunt wins it (just), esp. with Odemwingie and Long set to return from injury (therefore better assist potential for Brunt)...

what do you all think about malouda and his future at chelsea?
doesen't seem he really "fits" into AVB'S vision.
his minutes are diminishing. even though he looked pretty electric in the game he scored ...
just seems that AVB wants to play latin playmakers ...
I think he's making a mistake overlooking the frenchman.
what do you think? he's also very expensive in fantasy...

Well it looks like his position short- and long-term has gone to Mata. Malouda is very pricey for someone who at best is at a big risk of rotation. Has done brilliantly in the past and will no doubt shine again at some point (probably in patches), but it seems like his time has gone (certainly in terms of fantasy potential).

Was somewhat surprised he wasn't sold this summer, especially with the rumours of Juventus (who would have offered c.£10m) circling.

When he's good he's incredible, but too often he's anonymous. He is very expensive and given that he's now a rotation risk he has no value in FPL.

    Gents,

Just a quickie, really struggling with this one. I've got 2 free transfers. I'm planning to ship Torres for RVP but need to find 1.1m to fund the move. Realistically I need to ship one of the following players, which would you go for?

Nani - Leaves 8.8m - possible transfer: Dempsey
    Suarez - Leaves 8.5m - possible transfer: ?
Bosingwa - Leaves 4.6m - possible transfer: De laet
    Sessegnon - Leaves 5.4m - possible transfer: ?

I would have thought so. I just don't buy into the Suarez hype in terms of FPL potential. I may be proved wrong.

If you want a safer option go Nani to Dempsey - though I don't think he'll play as advanced with Ruiz's arrival.

Really? Isn't there some statistic that since Suarez joined, Liverpool have only scored one goal with him not on the pitch.

...and, until last week he had been directly involved in every goal this season?

I think Suarez is fantasy gold.

Nani - biggest funds tied up in a currently underperforming (FPL wise) player). Dempsey would be a very good move, esp. as he tends to score in doubles and Blackburn this w/e is exactly the sort of fixture he (and Fulham) will be looking to do well in...

I'd probably do Nani to Dempsey of those, and maybe Cahill instead. Nani's starting berth isn't guaranteed especially with tough games ahead, Demp and Cahill are reliable and there aren't many options below them unless you drop in price heavily.

Hmm, I'd be wary of both Barton and Arteta as we don't currently know how they'll fit into their respective sides, not many minutes they'll get etc. Not only do I think Dempsey and Hoolahan are the safer picks I also believe they have the more favourable fixtures. That said a gamble on Arteta and Barton could be extremely profitable, but I'd say it's more of a gamble.

I'm wondering whether I should be giving the CL more thought. Mancini may see a home game against Wigan as a perfect opportunity to rotate his team before Wednesday. A City team with Balotelli and Tevez up front is still pretty formidable.

I've never seen Tevez give anything other than 100% on the pitch and he is hardly volatile on it either.

Balotelli is still a part of Mancini's plans, and now is as good a chance as any to give him some minutes.

Benching him, and then bringing him on as a sub, then playing him on wednesday, is hardly going to destroy his run of form. How much are City going to go for it in the CL?

You're talking like it's entirely inconceivable - i'm not saying it's probable, but at least trying to weigh up the possibility.

I don't think it's outrageous at all, Mancini has shown in the past he is willing to rotate heavily.

Ugh not liking my defence next week:

    Bosingwa - UTD(A)
    Enrique - TOT(A)
    De Laet - BOL(A)
    Hall - WOL(A)
    Kompany - FUL(A)

Not the best planning seeings as im on a wildcard.

          Yeah, I'm settled.

          Krul Vorm
Baines Bosingwa Brown Ward De Laet
          Walcott Taarabt Hoolahan Jarvis Hoolahan
          RVP Rooney Dzeko

Fully expecting Dzeko to be benched, hopefully to then not feature at all, but a) I'm happy enough with M-Pet coming off the bench with his haul of points after rinsing Smalling for 90 mins 😉 b) I think he's the best value City option, and should play the majority of games.

Slightly tempted to have Balotelli this week, and then switch him to Dzeko next week.

As much as i love Balotelli, im not falling into that trap again! You do love Hoolahan 😉

I need to sort my defence out, or just ride out next week and hope for the best. Confident playing Bosingwa against Utd 8)

There is no easy way of solving it either, if only i had .2 more. Could do Enrique -> Warnock but i want Enrique for the whole season and if Liverpool keep one cleansheet, he'll rise.

I can see Arsenal scoring, and Arsenal can't score without RVP being involved.

On the other hand, Man City have a variety of attacking outlets and Dzeko may return a blank, even if Man City score 3+ goals. Plus, Guardian team sheets has Dzeko not starting.

RvP surely. Swansea shipped 30+ shots at Man City, would expect something similar (20+) at Arsenal. And if RvP and his teammates get away 20+ shots against Swansea you'd bet your bottom dollar there'll be a couple of goals and/or assists in it for their main front man.

[Now watch Dzeko score four more against Wigan...]

Well Wolves have the better form, and Norwich face WBA who have both Odemwingie and Long back up front, so WARD would seem the better choice.

      But...

Norwich face a Woy Hodgson team away from home (clean sheet to Norwich), and Spurs (with Adebayor and Parker added to the mix) will be a team hungry for points which means Wolves will probably concede, thus making DE LAET the better choice.

In short, you might as well flip a coin, although I'd plump for whichever player you feel is more likely to score (albeit unlikely)...

    Nasri

Does any one here know much about ACL injuries? Had a kick around game earlier and now my knee has a creaky click like it needs some wD40! It every time I bend and straighten it again. Any advice how to loosen up the joint a little?

ACL injuries tend not to make said 'clicky noises' - such sounds would indicate the lubrication of the joint, so cartilidge, or possibly tendon.

If you hear a loud pop sound, just ask (fat) Ronaldo, then you know you're in trouble... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yswziXAhtNE (his opponents heard the tendon pop on the one at 0:37)

wheres the crikey click? front, back sides..
clicks in joints usually mean tight tendons, which means tight muscles. The noise is the tendon pinging over the bone. if it was your acl you wouldnt be able to walk let alone kick anything and youd be in a lot of pain.

Stretch your quads, hammies and calfs out well. Massage wouldnt go a miss either if your really concerned.

    Help greatly appreciated guys

    KRUL borm
    bosingwa kompany WARD SIMPSON delatt
    mata walcott silva dyer OBERTAN
    suarez rooney dzeko

im fine with this team except the fact that im doubled new castle defence.
i feel the guys in CAPS can be moved around.. do i have the best combo with them

    a. can downgrade obertan to 4.5 and upgrade simpson to brown
    b. can downgrade obertan to 4.5 and upgrade krul to given (also will bring in ruddy to keep good rotation – im on wc)
    c. can leave the same

also what about ward vs brown?

    please advise guys

      Depends if you're playing 343 or 433.

Krul & Ward are fine. Sunderland play Chelsea so won't bring brown in unless you bench him - bit pointless. Simpson can rotate with De Laet & Ward.

Doubling up on newcastle defence isn't such a bad idea as you won't play both when you play one of them anyway. If Obertan's playing he's good value, having two 4.5s in midfield would be risky. If you do downgrade him I'd probably spend the 0.5 on getting a 5.0 defender (eg. Warnock, Shawcross) in for Ward, and maybe the Wolves keeper over Krul to avoid doubling up on any defenders. The core of your team is great though so it shouldn't affect it too much either way.
