[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

A hectic transfer window and the International break has thrown up a whole host of interesting options for this gameweek, and although Edin Dzeko has seemingly cornered the mainstream market with a staggering 390,000 transfers in the FPL game so far this week, there are still plenty of alternative options available if youโ€™re looking for a โ€˜Differential’. As we gear up for another gameweek then, it’s time to take another look at the stand out options that have been missed by the masses and pick out our three favourites for this week…..

Daniel Sturridge

Juan Mata was the alternative this week and although the Spaniard looks to be on top form and will surely attract substantial investment over the coming weeks, it is Daniel Sturridge ย that most catches the eye as a differential. He was outstanding in pre-season and would surely have been involved in Chelseaโ€™s first three games were it not for his suspension, so at just 6.5m he looks great value and his current ownership of 0.9% should soar if he can get on the score sheet this weekend.

The obvious question mark over his starting role may be enough to put some off, but with Drogba definitely out of action against Sunderland, many respectable pundits have been backing a Mata/ Torres/Sturridge front three. Despite his indifference, getting the best from ยฃ50 million signing Fernando Torres has to be the number one priority for Andre Villas-Boas if he wants to get on at Chelsea, and Malouda, Kalou and Anelka have all been disappointing in this respect so far. With Villas-Boas and John Terry both commenting recently on how highly rated Sturridge has become at Chelsea, it certainly looks like he will get his chance this weekend, and at such a bargain price he looks like a perfect differential.

Per Mertesacker

Picking an Arsenal defender after their 8 goal mauling at Old Trafford might seem a bit odd, but with Arsenal expected to make wholesale changes to their back four for the weekendโ€™s tie and Swansea still looking for their first goal of the campaign, they will be confident of picking up a clean sheet. The bookies certainly agree with this sentiment too – Paddy Power have them at evens for a clean sheet, the second lowest odds of any side. Their next six fixtures are also the easiest of any side according to our next six ticker, so with such an attractive run of fixtures to come, spending 6.0m on an Arsenal defender might just be one of the most sensible transfers you could make this week.

We covered the key facts and stats about Mertesacker earlier in the week with our Window Watch article, but a few key things have changed since then. Firstly Thomas Vermaelen has been ruled out making the big German an almost dead cert to start, and will also by default make him a key target for corners and crosses. With Gibbs and Sagna also returning to fitness, Arsenal should also be a lot more solid at the back than last week adding to his clean sheet potential. Fellow new arrival Andre Santos is definitely one to keep an eye on, but recent reports suggest he is still short of match fitness and so Mertesacker looks like the strongest pick, despite his low ownership of just 1.1%.

Bryan Ruiz

After signing for Fulham in the final hour of the transfer window, Bryan Ruiz will be looking to settle into the Fulham side as quickly as possible and with a home tie against stuttering Blackburn, he has a great opportunity to make an immediate impact. There is still a doubt over whether heโ€™ll play the full 90 minutes, but reports suggest he is expected to start as part of a two man attack alongside a fit again Bobby Zamora. A detailed look into his statistics and history is given in another of our window watch articles from last week so further analysis is unnecessary here, but suffice to say, if he can recreate the form that made him such a key player at FC Twente then he looks good for goals, assists and bonus, and should go on to become a great value pick.

Despite coming in at a very affordable 7.0m in the FPL game, just 5000 managers have picked him up since his introduction to the FPL game last week. Although relatively unknown having played much of his career in the Eredivisie, this still seems like a very slow uptake for such a promising player and probably has much to do with Edin Dzekoโ€™s unprecedented popularity โ€“ if you donโ€™t buy into the hype however, Ruiz looks an excellent differential and his much lower price should help free up funds to use elsewhere.

SWP against Ryan Taylor could be a genius move for captain, go for it if you're confident, agree with the other issues though (mainly defence).

Not good. Zabaleta will be rotated a lot and doesn't appear to be 1st choice. Briggs and Ferguson will barely play. They may be cheap but you need subs that can get points. SWP is a dodgy pick for captain, go for Rooney or Walcott. Riise for 6m is too much.

Unbelievably tempting to do Rooney > Chica and find 0.8 somewhere to finance Baines. But if not, I'm pretty settled on:

    Krul (Vorm)

Bosingwa - Enrique - Ward (Simpson, N. Taylor)

Silva - Mata - Brunt - Petrov (Johnson)

    Rooney - RVP - Suarez

Baines is only a good pick for the next two weeks and given their form even that is debatable. After that Everton have awful fixtures. Don't screw up your team for Baines

Can I just say that I think that the Scout's theory that Dzeko is something of a regular starter while Aguero and Tevez will rotate in the remaining strikers spot is wishful thinking.

I am willing to bet anyone there will be 8 or more games where Tevez and Aguero begin together, with Dzeko on the bench.

You can get around the fact that there's three undropable players competing for a maximum of two positions, and none of them will nail down a super regular spot (meaning well over 30 starts.)

Moses has had a LOT of shots this season... surely one has got to go in soon enough? The thought that Wigan might score at Citeh isn't as barmy as people think - Fulham, notoriously poor travellers, have scored three up there a couple of times.

Sinclair likewise has come close to scoring, and his pace will trouble Mertesacker, and last season Arsenal did have some shoddy results against the promoted teams early on (WBA and Toon both won there I think?)

If it helps, the bookies have Swansea with a 52% chance of scoring, Wigan just 44%...

      Moses or Sinclair... probably Sinclair.

True. I'm liking Foolem as they have Zamora fit and the new guy Luiz this season, no real leavers and last season they scored 49 points (so buying at 45 seems cheap). Admitedly they've not had the best start this season though...

I don't think so. You may get the points back and then go into profit, but it can't be as good an option as just using the two in a more productve way. Arteta may be a better option than Nani this week, but it isn't so desperate that you need to burn four points for it. And its bad bad bad to take a four point hit just to raise money (that's what forward planning is for.)

What about Lampard and Graham out for van persie and the best budget midfielder you can get with the remaining money? No points hit there, and you get the best player for the next 5 or 6 weeks, in my opinion.

Or of you must take a hit, then Lampard, Nani, and Graham out for Silva, a budget midfielder and RVP? Spreading a single four point hit accross three sensible moves where each is likely to return on the investment.

You could consult the "players" section of this website to get some points predictions for the best budget midfielders. Use the filters to set your price limit: http://www.ratemyteam.co.uk

Had a couple of replies to this earlier, but neither matched my thinking of A (going without RVP & Dzeko). Any takers?

A: Torres > Holt; Yaya > Nasri; Larsson > Walcott (4 point hit)

B: Torres > RVP; Baines > Ward; Yaya > Nasri (4 point hit).

    C: Torres > Dzeko; Yaya > Walcott (keep Larsson);

D: Torres > RVP; Bent > Dzeko (keep Yaya & Larsson).

I'm veering away from B to keep Baines for a tricky defensive week in gw5.

I am starting to go in the direct of D, but I worry about possible Dzeko rotation. Then again, about 390,000 others will have the same problem ๐Ÿ™‚

Nasri will come in for Yaya at some point soon, maybe around the same time as Baines comes out.

It's not really a question of players being knackered though. I'm sure that the likes of Dzeko and Aguero could easily play 90 minutes tomorrow, in midweek and then the following weekend too. It's more to do with the fact that City have a massive squad, and Wigan at home is a perfect opportunity to allow some of the back-up players a game, especially when there is a CL game immediately after.

There is a serious lack of understanding across this site about the following Golden Rule of Fantasy Football:

Not all teams have one set line-up which is their "First XI", away from which they only deviate if they have no other option.

If you do not realise this, you are seriously weakening your own abilities as a Fantasy player.

Taken as a collective, the Forum builds up this certainty around particular players starting, and then feign moral outrage and hard luck when that player is dropped.

Three big hitters up top, Walcott, Baines, a defence that rotates well amongst itself and then some cheap(ish) midfielders with decent games coming up... I like it!

What's your team for the weekend?

Is Cech definitely playing this w/e? If so I have no GK ๐Ÿ™

Worth a 4 point hit to do Hilario -> 5.1m or less? If so, which one?

    Ruddy, Hilario
    Bosingwa, Dunne, Senderos, Simpson, Brown

Long term the Vorm/Ruddy rotation works out excellently, and Vorm looks like being great value for money. Only problem is that this week Ruddy is suspended and Vorm has a shocking fixture.. I'd be tempted to go without a keeper this week and then switch to Vorm next week. Unless you think Vorm will score 4+ at The Emirates? I certainly don't.

With save points it might just be a -2 or -1 point hit. Would free up another transfer for next week.

Yeah, so typical that both Ruddy got sent off last week AND Cech came back earlier than expected...

What about Schwarzer or Given (perhaps overkill with Senderos/Dunne?)

They both work out pretty well too, both alternating home fixtures with Ruddy perfectly until the second wildcard. And out of the two defences I'd much sooner double up on the Villa defence.

I've not used my WC yet so will probably do that around GW10ish. Swaying towards a 4 point hit for Given...probably be a net hit, but frees up a transfer and they rotate v well up to GW10

what d'ya reckon? sturridge is my one punt
defence is cheap but rotates v well apart from gw5

    chesney, vorm
de L, simpson, ward, brown, olsson
silva, walcott, brunt, n dyer, nasri
    roon, rvp, sturridge

i really fancy tevez to rip the stage up tomorrow, but at 11.9 he is just too much to gamble on

Bloody hell, that is a very cheap defence! Why not downgrade Chesney to Krul, and then upgrade at least a couple of the defenders?

Front eight is excellent, as you'd expect with such a cheap defence. ๐Ÿ˜‰

One question, which player's starting place is more likely to be under threat with the arrival of Santon to Newcastle? R Taylor or Simpson? This young lad played as a left back for Inter if I'm not mistaken.

            Taylor's place will probably go.

And you can have Krul and Simpson in the same team, not really a problem.

If you have Barkley then this is when you gotta play him really. Simpson could pull out a cleanie if he's lucky and nothing more. Barkley could get 0, but he could do something special, might as well go for it.

      i kinda answered this before.

Ward is hot, but Johnson will be better value in the long run.

Warnock is good value as well.

fixtures are comparable until week 8. i'd prob'ly give Villa the edge on fixtures until then, but they are close.

I'd prob'ly go Johnson, Warnock, then Ward.

i want to see how Wolves do against Tottenham before I answer this. oh wait, i just DID answer...
