[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

A hectic transfer window and the International break has thrown up a whole host of interesting options for this gameweek, and although Edin Dzeko has seemingly cornered the mainstream market with a staggering 390,000 transfers in the FPL game so far this week, there are still plenty of alternative options available if you’re looking for a ‘Differential’. As we gear up for another gameweek then, it’s time to take another look at the stand out options that have been missed by the masses and pick out our three favourites for this week…..

Daniel Sturridge

Juan Mata was the alternative this week and although the Spaniard looks to be on top form and will surely attract substantial investment over the coming weeks, it is Daniel Sturridge  that most catches the eye as a differential. He was outstanding in pre-season and would surely have been involved in Chelsea’s first three games were it not for his suspension, so at just 6.5m he looks great value and his current ownership of 0.9% should soar if he can get on the score sheet this weekend.

The obvious question mark over his starting role may be enough to put some off, but with Drogba definitely out of action against Sunderland, many respectable pundits have been backing a Mata/ Torres/Sturridge front three. Despite his indifference, getting the best from £50 million signing Fernando Torres has to be the number one priority for Andre Villas-Boas if he wants to get on at Chelsea, and Malouda, Kalou and Anelka have all been disappointing in this respect so far. With Villas-Boas and John Terry both commenting recently on how highly rated Sturridge has become at Chelsea, it certainly looks like he will get his chance this weekend, and at such a bargain price he looks like a perfect differential.

Per Mertesacker

Picking an Arsenal defender after their 8 goal mauling at Old Trafford might seem a bit odd, but with Arsenal expected to make wholesale changes to their back four for the weekend’s tie and Swansea still looking for their first goal of the campaign, they will be confident of picking up a clean sheet. The bookies certainly agree with this sentiment too – Paddy Power have them at evens for a clean sheet, the second lowest odds of any side. Their next six fixtures are also the easiest of any side according to our next six ticker, so with such an attractive run of fixtures to come, spending 6.0m on an Arsenal defender might just be one of the most sensible transfers you could make this week.

We covered the key facts and stats about Mertesacker earlier in the week with our Window Watch article, but a few key things have changed since then. Firstly Thomas Vermaelen has been ruled out making the big German an almost dead cert to start, and will also by default make him a key target for corners and crosses. With Gibbs and Sagna also returning to fitness, Arsenal should also be a lot more solid at the back than last week adding to his clean sheet potential. Fellow new arrival Andre Santos is definitely one to keep an eye on, but recent reports suggest he is still short of match fitness and so Mertesacker looks like the strongest pick, despite his low ownership of just 1.1%.

Bryan Ruiz

After signing for Fulham in the final hour of the transfer window, Bryan Ruiz will be looking to settle into the Fulham side as quickly as possible and with a home tie against stuttering Blackburn, he has a great opportunity to make an immediate impact. There is still a doubt over whether he’ll play the full 90 minutes, but reports suggest he is expected to start as part of a two man attack alongside a fit again Bobby Zamora. A detailed look into his statistics and history is given in another of our window watch articles from last week so further analysis is unnecessary here, but suffice to say, if he can recreate the form that made him such a key player at FC Twente then he looks good for goals, assists and bonus, and should go on to become a great value pick.

Despite coming in at a very affordable 7.0m in the FPL game, just 5000 managers have picked him up since his introduction to the FPL game last week. Although relatively unknown having played much of his career in the Eredivisie, this still seems like a very slow uptake for such a promising player and probably has much to do with Edin Dzeko’s unprecedented popularity – if you don’t buy into the hype however, Ruiz looks an excellent differential and his much lower price should help free up funds to use elsewhere.

    Question:

Is it pure insanity to keep Torres? I've been waiting through the break to make my transfers and have been very tempted (like everyone else) with RVP, Rooney, and Dzeko. But part of me keeps thinking that at some point he's going to figure this all out and it seems that AVB is bent on making sure that happens.

So, am I insane to be considering this? (P.S. - My other (big) striker is Bent who could be shipped out for one of those three as well.)

"Honeslty what is the point of scout picks – this team is around 109Million to buy – NO-ONE has that budget. Is there any reason this article is constantly unrealistic?"

It's supposed to be a guide to the players who will probably do well this weekend. What's the point in saying "This player may not do well this weekend, but we had to have a player who costs 4.2 to fit him into the scout picks". It's just like the dream team feature on FPL. You can't afford to have them all, it's just there to show you who's doing well.

I don't think that's true otherwise they'd pick the obvious "all stars". What we have now is a mix & match bunch that fit into no real "real life" situation and it seems a little defunct.

        The watchlist is far better.

This isn't a we say "buy these eleven (+) players", it's a tip of players we think will do well and plotting them into a real formation fits a mould that works relative to the game we all know and love.

You're not going to make (potentially) 11 transfers a week to follow the team anyway - whether they cost 100m, 110m or 64m. If you are - you're bananas.

The formation is a theme. It's a tips article. It's not gospel.

The thing about the gospel is that it's a big book, you might not believe in it, but if you throw it hard at someone you can say that the truth it them, even if the don't believe. I understand your just tipping, but it would be nice if the punters could suggest a alternative 11 to rival the scout boys pearls of wisdom.

Let me add to your misery - loss Petrov; he won't get you anything soon - get Barton, he will take corners and be big in mid field for QPR this week. Besides from Bossy-man-inga and Enrique, your defence needs shooting - too predictable and too cheap! Heavy weight front 3 though, but will Suarez get joy out of Sunderland??? Maybe you can get Mata if you look for a little sacrifice.

This is from yahoo eurosport premier league preview.. 0-0 anyone?

Stoke have only netted two goals in their last five Premier League games combined.
Liverpool haven’t won at the Britannia Stadium in the Premier League, drawing two and losing one of three games there.
Stoke have only lost one of their last 10 home league games; a 0-1 defeat to Wigan on the final day of last season.
The Potters have failed to score in four of their six PL meetings with Liverpool.
This is Stoke’s best start to a Premier League season after three games, with five points accrued already.

Suarez for me as Dzeko will be rotated throughout the season especially when they are in the latter rounds of CL. City have a ridicules amount of riches up front. If Dzeko has an off game he will be benched next fixture.

Nah. He's not a cert to play and O'Hara against his old club would be just like him to score.

Is rvp gunna be like the last gw's Torres?

I didn't go with the poll then and I ain't going with it now.

Fair enough arsenal have the fixtures but they are garbage at the mo.

Rather have city players any day, IMO.

The problem with fixtures is that sometimes you realise a team's fixtures are now crap and that all their good ones went by without any rewards.

With that said I have RVP. But I'm captaining Silva.

Love Van man, but he is not in my team. I have Shrek instead, as I think he is in form. Silva is my VC and if Nasir is benched then he could have a very large week. He was unlucky last game and Nasir did his thing, so very one is jumping on the bandwagon. Tevez and Dzeko will play in my opinion. Hope Dzeko gets subbed early on as that will drop 180,000 fpl managers right in it!

I'm really struggling to see anything but a big win for Arsenal this weekend. They need it so badly and should be feeling confident with the new boys. I think RVP will do well.

How could you compare the form of Torres vs RVP

Arsenal will bounce back big style, RVP is a strong choice for captain, but I think the points will come from mid field. Arteta/Walcott or even Ramsey, as I see him moving into a more forward position in mid field. RVP no doubt will get decent points.

    Given
    Bos Simpson Gabbidon
    Walcott Silva Sess Barkley
    RVP Rooney AJ

    Subs: Ruddy, Cole, Moses, Brown

Have used my 2 free transfers, not sure whether AJ will start though.
Considering: Cole > Baines or Kompany
    Sess > 7.6 mid (who?)
AJ > 6.5m forward -Agbon, Long, Klasnic or Bentdner?

    Any opinions anyone?

No, he generally plays LB, but if chasing a goal or stuck for strikers he is pushed upfront
